Indicted but soon to be re-elected?

There truly is no accounting for voters’ taste: Nine-term Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., finished ahead of six other Democrats in Saturday’s primary for his seat, positioning him well for both the Nov. 4 runoff election against political newcomer and former TV reporter Helena Moreno and the Dec. 6 general election. Jefferson, whose freezer was infamously found to contain $90,000 in alleged bribe money, is to be tried in December on charges of bribery, money laundering and misuse of his congressional office for business dealings.

Meanwhile, the corruption trial of Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, continues in Washington, D.C., with prosecutors nearing the end of their case. Stevens hopes the trial will deliver him an acquittal in time for voters to send him back to the Senate next month.

Another reason we need term limits on politicians.

BOTH of these politicians are ABYSMAL and they should be kicked to the curb.

See, cons its really not so hard to admit when one of your own party is a snake. YOu can do it!

Now if you’d just admit what a horrid candidate Palin is, and you have to question McSame’s judgement for putting her even on the ticket.

Let Stevens and Jefferson share an office … in the basement …

I’m sorry. I find this thread backward.

Rhonda wrote it so it is no surprise. The quality of threads HAS suffered of late.

WHY is the topic of the thread primarily Jefferson and secondarily Stevens? Alaska Senator Ted Stevens is the bigger fish and the bigger story as his corruption also reaches to envelop lil’ Sarah Palin.

Shades of Marion Barry. “Cold cash” Jefferson may be a criminal, but he’s our criminal.

Monkey, personally, I don’t own any criminal. Do you own “cold Cash” Jefferson? Is it OK?

My point was that voters will turn a blind eye to what one of their own is doing.

Are you such a nitwit that you think you have to try to turn every blog exchange into an us against them?

I think we all know that answer.

    No, “outlander” –

If Jefferson is guilty (and by all outward appearances it appears he is) he should pay the consequences.

Likewise, Ted Stevens looks guilty as sin with more than $250,000 off-the-books renovations of his “chalet” paid for by cronies and campaign donors.

This thread is called “indicted but soon to be relected?” and Sen. Stevens didn’t get a mention. Maybe because Stevens is a white guy Republic Party member.

    Okay. Stevens got a mention.

    But not a photo.

    Just to correct myself.

Ahhhh, The Eagle can’t help adding in some Republican dirt when reporting some bad news about a Democrat.

This Jefferson story is what, 2 years old and still not resolved?

Why hasn’t Jefferson been beaten up by the press every day for the last 2 years?

    “MaxGrobnik” whines –

“Why hasn’t Jefferson been beaten up by the press every day for the last 2 years?”

You’re demonstrating your ignorance. It’s been in the papers pretty regularly.

On of the problems has been the House — in a rare bit of bipartisanship — has been fighting a 4th Amendment issue regarding the propriety of the FBI search of Jefferson’s freezer. Pretty silly, I think, but there is a separation of powers dispute between the FBI (executive branch) and the House of Representatives (legislative branch).

On a more practical level of setting priorities, Stevens is accused of getting more than $250,000 of under-the-table contribution; Jefferson’s $95,000 in cold cash is chump change in comparison.

It’s been in the papers, “MaxGrobnik.” There for you to read, had you a mind to.

If i am not mistaken, Jefferson has already been reelected once since the “cold cash” story broke. The wheels of justice grind slowly, especially for Congressmen.

“Why hasn’t Jefferson been beaten up by the press every day for the last 2 years?”

He HAS been beaten up faitrly regularly. However, he is a rather insignificant local matter rather than a big national one. I am much more concerned with a corrupt president than abuot some idiot corrupt Representative.

Marvin Griffin – governor of Georgia back in the late 50s early 60s as I recall. Another corrupt one who kept getting elected. I remember one comment – “Since has has already stolen all he needs he won’t steal any more.”

I think there was a similarly corrupt governor in Maryland in the late 60s or so. Mandel? Not sure of the name.

Fish don’t fry in the kitchen,
A beans don’t burn on the grill.
Took a whole lot of trying
Just to get up that hill.
Now we’re up in the big leagues,
    Gettin our turn at bat.
    As long as we live
    It’s you and me baby.
There ain’t nothing wrong with that.

    Hey Rhonda:

Do you think that the City of Wichita going is going to issue industrial revenue bonds to help a management buy out of the the corrupt dysfunctional nepotistic Wichita Eagle from the Mclatchy Corp. You and your collegues’ reutations are so worthless that no media company is willing to purchase the Eagle. I noticed that Schofield & Crowson recently left the paper. In a few months only you, L, Phil, Mark, Lori & Carrie will be left to publsih the classifed & auto dealership ads & Dillon’s flyers. Maybe Bucky W. can be enticed to stop dressing up in drag for eagle parties & videos and replace Pam as the Eagle publisher.

The WSU School of Communication and Buzz Merritt must really be proud of introducing civic journalism (i.e. fascist propaganda) to the Eagle in the early 90’s. I posted the following comment to Roy’s story about the business leaders opposing Karl Peterjohn’s candidacy.

    Bill McKean 293-6079

THE EAGLE KNOWS THAT PETERJOHN IS SCARING THE CRAP OUT OF THE CORRUPT ELITIST FASCIST POLITICIANS, BUSINESS LEADERS, POWER BROKER ATTORNEYS CONTROLLING USD 259, THE WICHITA CITY GOVERNMENT & THE SEDGWICK COUNTY GOVERNMENT & COURTS. The real issues are not lower taxes, slashed government budgets or corporate welfare or lbieral media. The real issues are nepotism, transparency & accountability and the Eagle management’s refusal to investigate & report corruption. Government & court house corruption are the worst of all taxes. Someone needs to remind Sorenson that propsective employers are more concerned about sky rocketing murder & rape rates, drive by shootings, increase number of murders of children and corrupt SRS officials & judges than they are about corporate welfare & lower taxes. The Eagle’s management and Ron Sylvester, Bonnie Bing & Randy Brown never did any thing to embarrass their spouses Linda Parks, Randy Brown, Dick Honeyman) law lirm & partner Richard Hite who controls the judicial nominations to the Supreme Court. Eagle reporter Brent Winstrom continually refuses to report the names of the Broadview hotel owners or their banker who benefitted from the recent $25 million bail out. Maybe the Eagle does not want to jeopardize the job of city lobbyist, Dale Goter, who is Lori’s boyfriend or embarrass all of the elitist facists that are running the Visioneering & the Kansas Health Foundation.
