When ABC’s “Nightline” visited El Dorado, hometown of Barack Obama’s maternal grandfather, as part of the “50 States in 50 Days” series, it found no one willing to predict Obama would beat John McCain there on Nov. 4. Republican Mike Cooper told ABC that when Obama visited Butler Community College in January, “I had several customers that I had talked with who lived in the area, and three or four of them said anybody with the name Barack Hussein Obama shouldn’t even be here.”

Nineteen Fifties anyone? Racism is, unfortunately, alive and well in Kansas.
God bless those rednecks. :D
I don’t care what relative of this guy is from El Dorado. He should not be elected. But it’s up to the American people to see through his BS.
Yeah, that’s why he filled his appearance at BCCC to capacity and people had to be turned away.
I know many people who live in Eldorado who support him and are excited about him being the next prez. Maybe the person doing the reporting needs to be more inclusive of the general population there when he interviews.
So, to what name should one be known in El Dorado? Kal-El, or Clark Kent? Bubba Bo Bob Brain, perhaps? Would the name Esperanza Hope Smith be acceptable to the “native” ears?
The media loves to do that. Find one example, this one second hand even, and write a story implicating a whole group.
The idiocy of the internet world.
The stupid news media is doing all they can to get the wimp and communist leaning Obama elected. If he wins I predict all will regret it.
What a dissappointing story….shines a bad light on El Dorado. Not really sure what the reasoning was behind this story.
More like racism is alive and well in Eldorado.
The billboard they have misrepresents their backwoods hillbilly attitudes of 50 years ago.

Is this really any surprise from a small Kansas town? First of all, Kansas is Republican and has been for many, many years.
Second, Barack’s mother had the audacity to leave Kansas and marry a man from Kenya. How dare she do that.
It appears the Wichita Eagle desired to stir up some hatred towards an area community.
What are people supposed to say? It is as if they are to be goaded into supporting Obama, because a few people out of thousands made remarks concerning his name.
Do ABC’s Nightline or the Wichita Eagle care about the issues? There are countless El Dorado residents who can speak intelligently about political candidates and it appears the Wichita Eagle desires to smear a community that has numerous subscribers to their newspaper.
Gotta love that small town America mentality, vote based on a name.
I braved the freezing cold to hear Sen. Obama in January, then braved the blizzard-like conditions to attend the very crowded caucus. There were scores of others who shared my surprise that there were THAT many democrats in the county. It is the reddest of the red! I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in the nation’s top 10 red counties. There are several seats that are uncontested by democrats, because why bother? (I didn’t even send in my primary mail-in ballot because Slattery was about the only person I was allowed to vote on.) No sane person would EVER believe Obama or any democrat would carry that county. It is ironic. But that made Sen. Obama’s visit to ElDorado even more special and meaningful. It gave us hope for the nation, if not for our pig-headed neighbors. A big fist-bump to all Bu Co Dems!
Deb – ABC’s Nightline was the one doing the interviewing and a Republican by the name of Mike Cooper freely told the reporter his thoughts about Obama. Where is the media bias in this?
Seems like this Mike Cooper is the one that made the statement – are you accusing him of a bias also?
ElDorado is not Obama county, USA is not even Obama country!! Look at the lawsuit alleging he is not a US citizen. He can’t produce a legitimate birth certificate showing US birth, a constitutional requirement to be president!
obamacrimes.com
It has absolutely nothing to do with race, and everything to do with lack of character, marxist friends, and communist ideals. Tax and take, collective farms, no coal or nuclear power. He would destroy the infrastructure of this country, dismantle the military, as well as the moral fabric of our society.
Mom, I’m saying ABC’s Nightline could have searched for more people to interview.
I’m also saying the Eagle is making sure that anyone who doesn’t support Obama must be viewed as narrow-minded bigots.
There are thoughtful people who actually disagree with Obama on the issues. Why doesn’t Nightline bring up them?
I know people from El Dorado who attended the Butler Community College political rally. They were excited a presidential candidate came to El Dorado. I would have attended if I could have gotten away from work.
I am saying that Nightline and the Wichita Eagle are painting the city of El Dorado with a very broad stroke. I’m also saying it is foolish since many subscribers come from El Dorado.
“nojunk” plays us an oldie-but-goodie –
“…USA is not even Obama country!! Look at the lawsuit alleging he is not a US citizen. He can’t produce a legitimate birth certificate….”
And when you’re through with that can you play “Stairway to Heaven?”
What is it with the racist Republicans and their inability to spell properly? If you are going to make some racist statement and advertise your ignorance is there really a need to advertise your Bushisms as well?

I’ll assume test scores in El Dorado aren’t the highest in the state.
most of the people in the room were students, attend for “A” bribe…
cars were from various car dealers…
as for turning peopla away … LOL … they were just circling around the building… like a parade
“Zman” comes up with –
“…lack of character, marxist friends, and communist ideals. Tax and take, collective farms, no coal or nuclear power. He would destroy the infrastructure of this country, dismantle the military, as well as the moral fabric of our society.”
Wow. What a powerful person he must be! For one man to do all that.
I wouldn’t cross him if I were you.
yourkidding — I’ll pass on correcting the spelling of your name…. obviously you were not in ElDorado for Sen. Obama’s speech. I stood in line in the freezing cold with a retired couple who drove in from the K.C. area. I know that at least one bus load of senior citizens from Wichita drove out for the event. It was NOT just Grizzly students. I was in the overflow room, and there was a WIDE range of folks there.
““I had several customers that I had talked with who lived in the area, and three or four of them said anybody with the name Barack Hussein Obama shouldn’t even be here.”
It is easy to presume that ABC simply looked for examples of racist nutjobs, but from the looks the article, the person he interviewed volunteered the information. And “3 or 4″ people, not just one random racist nut? Sheesh. I’m glad Mary reminded us of the other El Doradoans.
As a Bu Co resident, I would say that most of them are such die-hard republicans that they would NEVER EVER vote for a democrat for president. I just can’t see it in our lifetimes. It wouldn’t matter what about the candidates’ proposals, they would vote republican because of the underlying philosophy of limited government (never mind the current republican administration doesn’t subscribe), gay marriage and abortion. They are the salt of the earth, faithful church-goers, love to hunt, join the boy scouts, think football is a requirement for manhood and would fight to the death to keep their good old truck (or hummer or suv).
I don’t see how the Eagle was biased about this blurb. They could find someone else to talk to, but the VAST majority are republican through and through.
It would not matter if his name was Smith or Jones, he is a Democrat. They would rather vote for 4 more years of the same, not to mention Bush’s war for fun and especially profit, we all did so well in our economy. Didn’t we? Any wonder What’s the Matter With Kansas?
Having lived most of my life in that God-forsaken land (water heavily-flouridated, flanked by two refineries, with the smell that “you get used to”), I’ll say that I know a bunch of dupes there that just love the guy. And yeah the rascists are ever-prevalent there as well. Doesn’t mean the entire town is rascist or an Obama-denier, it just shows that Butler football is king, not-so-much for the ejucashun.
BUT! Wichita is just a bigger El Dorado, sorry.
El Dor-a-Doo is Wichita’s Oakland.
(I know it’s a strain to equate Wichita with San Francisco, but the Analogy Police aren’t coming yet.)
Over the years I’ve had occasion to talk to some good kids who didn’t come to appreciate the value of education until they slid through high school. There’s a consistent look in their eyese when they say, “I’m going to Butler for a year or two.”
And there’s really no reason for them to be ashamed. Butler is fine community college and serves a worthy purpose. But it’s just not the same as that Harvard-on-the-Prairie “The” Wichita State University.
(do I need to call out the sarcasm? didn’t think so.)
But that’s the El Dor-a-Doo Curse.
They can’t quite live up to Wichita levels. And when you think about that, it’s really sad.
The only difference between ElDorado and Wichita was the choice to drive the cattle there and not ElDorado. Wichita got the rails, ElDorado got “the shaft”. Black gold.
“Pleefer” offers –
“The only difference between ElDorado and Wichita was the choice to drive the cattle there and not ElDorado. Wichita got the rails, ElDorado got “the shaft”. Black gold.”
One of the more significant historical notes is that, in the 1920s Wichita and Dallas were the same-sized cities.
So maybe it’s about how much oil was around. But back then Kansas’ oil fields were pretty profitable. And Wichita had Clyde Cesssna and the Beeches and Stearman and the beginnings of Coleman and was pretty entrepreneurial.
Dallas set out to become a world-class city. Wichita set out to become the biggest small town in Kansas.
Both succeeded.

In the interest of fairness, has the same been asked of and delivered by McCain?
Panamá no es lo mismo que el U.S? :)
So 3 out of 4 people in that El Dorado cafe are anti-American fools. They forget that they stand on the raped land of native-Americans who also don’t have stupid “white Christian” names like Dennis Rader, or the rest of them.
I can just hear El Dorado.
“Hey boy, we don’t like your KIND around this town.”
“Hey boy, you huntin’ boar?”
“Hey Doris, call the fuzz! Some Muslim stold da cinder block frum under ur house!!”
“lvs24neek8″
Great name ;)
I gotta stand up for my El Dorado brethren.
All of you “oulander’s” come with your (too lazy to wash) boats and jetskis, delivering with them the killer of EL DORADO’S drinking water reservoirs’ eco-system, the Zebra Mussel.
El Dorado thanks you.
I can go to ANY Wal-Mart in the fair City of Wichita and “see” El Dorado’s demography. Granted it’s mostly relegated to the one @ Broadway and Pawnee, but still. ElDorado is a microcosm of Wichita.
So when judging El Doradoan’s, look in your mirror! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Also, I’ll wager that I’m the only one on here that has pronounced it correctly, El-Doe-Rah-Doe. Hell, the news people can’t get it right around here. Hell, that whole town can’t get it right.
Oh shoot, does that make me wrong then?
El Duh-RAY-Duh, sheesh, no wonder Kansas is a laughing stock.
“Also, I’ll wager that I’m the only one on here that has pronounced it correctly, El-Doe-Rah-Doe”
I guess ‘correctly’ depends on perspective doesn’t it?
It’s a Spanish name, right?
People pronounce Los Angeles, San Francisco and…nevermind, just being facetious, heh heh.
I don’t think it counts unless it was founded by Spanish speakers
Cortez passed by El Dorado.
My bad, Coronado.
My bad, Coronado kinda went by.
Damned word press thingy…
when Obama visited Butler Community College in January, “I had several customers that I had talked with who lived in the area, and three or four of them said anybody with the name Barack Hussein Obama shouldn’t even be here.”
———————————————————-
I say “Amen” to that. However, I don’t think Obama or the democrat party should be here. I say, “Send their butts to Europe or Russia if that is the kind of country they want.
Anyone read “Atlas Shrugged”?! That says it all. Or maybe watched the movie, “Other Peoples Lives”?
America is about capitalism and the opportunity for everyone to achieve. What Obama and the democrats want is to suppress the people and have a socialistic government. If Obama wants to spread the wealth around, I say he can spread his wealth to us. He has more than us and he dares to tell us that we need to give our money away to the government to give to those they deem the most neediest.
“Atlas Shrugged” For those who have read it, I say “Who is John Galt?”
Gee, brian, kiitos! (As my ex “cell-mate” at the NIAR during our internment at WSU would have said!)
Did toy around having a vanity plate LV24NK8 as well, even if it’s unofficial. would fit with my old blue beast (’78 Impala)… :)
NOW READ THE TRUTH ABOUT EL DORADO. ABC NIGHTLINE DID INTERVIEW OTHERS IN EL DORADO THAT DAY THEY SO QUIETLY SNUCK INTO TOWN. IT HAS BECOME APPARENT THAT THEY ONLY INTERVIEWED SEVERAL OF US AT THE BUTLER COUNTY DEMOCRATIC HEADQUARTERS TO COVER THEMSELVES FROM APPEARING BIASED. JOHN DONVAN, THE CORRESPONDENT, WAS ARGUMENTATIVE IN RESPONSE TO OUR ANSWERS IN WHICH WE STATED, AND HELD OUR GROUND,THAT EL DORADO, BUTLER COUNTY AND KANSAS ARE FILLED WITH OBAMA SUPPORTERS.ABC NEWS LIED TO US ABOUT THE ANGLE OF THE STORY. WE WERE TOLD IT WAS TO BE ABOUT THE IMPACT OBAMA’S VISIT TO EL DORADO MADE ON THE VOTERS. WE WERE ALSO TOLD THAT THEY WANTED TO VISIT WITH SOME MOTIVATED OBAMA SUPPORTERS. WE TOLD HIM SEVERAL STORIES THAT WE HAD HEARD FROM THE HUNDREDS OF VISITORS TO OUR HEADQUARTERS. ALL OF THEM WERE POSITIVE. JOHN DONVAN’S EXACT WORDS TO ME WERE,”THAT’S NOT WHAT I WANTED TO GET FROM YOU.” STEVE FUNK AND HIS CLAN THAT “JUST HAPPENED” TO BE AT SUSIE’S CHILI PARLOR THAT DAY ONLY REPRESENT THEIR OWN RACIST, REDNECK,IGNORANT SELVES. THEY DO NOT REPRESENT THE EL DORADO I KNOW. WE WILL HAVE THE LAST WORD ON NOV. 4TH DESPITE THOSE DESPERATE,DESPICABLE CHARACTERS.QUESTIONS? VISIT THE BUTLER CO. DMOCRATIC HEADQUARTRS IN EL DORADO.REBECCA BIDWELL
“WE WERE ALSO TOLD THAT THEY WANTED TO VISIT WITH SOME MOTIVATED OBAMA SUPPORTERS” Well duh. Why didn’t you produce some then? You telling them that the voters exist isn’t exactly a story.
Perhaps how you handled this was why the article went that way. Obviously most of ElDorado has republican bias, as with most of Kansas.
Perhaps they should have driven around looking for Obama yard signs, but those are just hard to find anywhere.
DEAR DUH, IF YOU HAD READ MY BLOG YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT THE WHOLE VISIT WAS KEPT TOP SECRET. THEY REFUSED TO TELL US WHAT TIME THEY WOULD BE IN TOWN. THAT’S BECAUSE THEY HAD TO MAKE A SCHEDULED STOP AT SUSIE’S. UNLIKE THOSE LOSER REPUGS THAT WERE THERE THAT DAY, THE DEMOCRATS WORK FOR A LIVING AND CAN’T SIT AROUND WAITING FOR THEIR 3 MINUTES OF FAME. WE HAVE SENT OUT APROX. 200 OBAMA YARD SIGNS. WE ARE THE BUTLER COUNTY DEMOCRATS, NOT THE SUSIE’S CHILI PARLOR REPUBLICANS.
THEY ACTUALLY FILMED OUR COUNTY CHAIRWOMAN DELIVERING OBAMA SIGNS TO SOME PEOPLE WHO HAD CALLED TO REQUEST THEM. WE GET CALLS EVERY DAY AND PEOPLE IN DAILY WANTING OBAMA SIGNS. WE HAVE TEACHERS,BANKERS,REFINERY WORKERS,UNEMPLOYED,95 YEAR OLD WOMEN,NURSES,CONSTRUCTION WORKERS,NEWLY REGISTERED VOTERS,RETIRED PEOPLE,FARMERS,RANCHERS,RAILROAD EMPLOYEES,POSTAL WORKERS,UNION MEMBERS…..THE LIST GOES ON, WHO HAVE PICKED UP OBAMA SIGNS. WE HAVE RUN OUT OF OBAMA SIGNS 3 TIMES. WE HAVE HAD TO DRIVE TO LAWRENCE TO PICK UP MORE OBAMA SIGNS, WE HAD TO HAVE 100 DELIVERED TO US ONE DAY BEFORE WE COULD OPEN THE DOORS. ANY MORE COMMENTS?
Moneyhawk, the lawsuit regarding the birth certificate was filed only 60 days ago, so not quite in the Stairway era. It may just seem that long, as there is absolutely no press coverage to refresh your short memory. McCain has not been asked, although I am confident he could produce one, because he has not been touting his multi-cultural heritage.
