Biden’s fantasy world

“Mrs. Palin may not know as much about the world as Mr. Biden does, but at least most of what she knows is true,” a Wall Street Journal editorial argued. It said that Joe Biden made factual mistakes during last week’s debate about Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bosnia and negotiating with Iran.

    From WSJ,

“Perhaps he merely misspoke. In any case, Mrs. Palin may not know as much about the world as Mr. Biden does, but at least most of what she knows is true.”
    ————

Is Palin merely “misspeaking” when she repeatedly, falsely claims that only a little 2,000-acre “plot” would be opened to drilling in the Refuge?

And to preempt a falsehood that will probably be posted later,

    8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.
    —————-

Windfall tax lets Alaska rake in billions from Big Oil
    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008103325_alaskatax07.html
“Then last year, Palin introduced a graduated tax pegged to increased oil prices. The state Legislature modified her proposal to increase the state’s take even further.

The tax is set at its highest rate in Prudhoe Bay, where the state takes 25 percent of the net profit of a barrel when its price is at or below $52.

The percentage then escalates as oil prices rise over that benchmark. Alaska gets about $49 of a $120 barrel, not counting other fees.”
    ———–

    http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/02/news/economy/palin_oil/?postversion=2008100316
“In late 2007 Palin succeeded in raising the tax on oil companies from 22.5 to 25% of net profits.
Alaska also added a clause increasing the tax for each dollar oil goes above $52 a barrel – essentially, a windfall profits tax.

    And another falsehood,

    11. IRAQ: When[sic] Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”,…
    —————

    http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2008b.html
BIDEN: John McCain and Dick Cheney said while I was saying we would not be greeted as liberators, we would not – this war would take a decade and not a day, not a week and not six months, we would not be out of there quickly. John McCain was saying the Sunnis and Shias got along with each other without reading the history of the last 700 years. John McCain said there would be enough oil to pay for this. John McCain has been dead wrong. I love him. As my mother would say, god love him, but he’s been dead wrong on the fundamental issues relating to the conduct of the war. Barack Obama has been right. There are the facts.

With regard to Iraq, I indicated it would be a mistake to — I gave the president the power. I voted for the power because he said he needed it not to go to war but to keep the United States, the UN in line, to keep sanctions on Iraq and not let them be lifted.

I, along with Dick Lugar, before we went to war, said if we were to go to war without our allies, without the kind of support we need, we’d be there for a decade and it’d cost us tens of billions of dollars. John McCain said, no, it was going to be OK.

The truth of the matter is, though, let’s go back to John McCain’s strategy. I never supported John McCain’s strategy on the war. John McCain said exactly what Dick Cheney said, go back and look at Barack Obama’s statements and mine. Go look at joebiden.com, contemporaneously, held hearings in the summer before we went to war, saying if we went to war, we would not be greeted as liberator, we would have a fight between Sunnis and Shias, we would be tied down for a decade and cost us hundreds of billions of dollars.

John McCain was saying the exact opposite. John McCain was lock- step with Dick Cheney at that point how this was going to be easy. So John McCain’s strategy in this war, not just whether or not to go, the actual conduct of the war has been absolutely wrong from the outset.

    Joe Biden’s 14 Lies

    1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

    2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

    3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

    4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

    5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

    6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

    7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

    8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.

    9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

    10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

    11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

    12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

    13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

    14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

Sen. Joe Biden was one of only 5 senators to vote against the first Alaskan pipeline bill in 1973, during the first Arab oil embargo. (Remember the gas lines?) The Senate passed the 1973 Alaskan pipeline bill by an overwhelming 80-5 vote. The Alaskan pipeline produced more than 15 billion barrels of oil, supplied nearly 20% of this nation’s oil, created tens of thousands of jobs, added hundreds of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy and reduced money transfers to the nation’s enemies by about the same amount. The only argument against the pipeline was from tree-huggers, that it would harm the caribou. The caribou population near the pipeline, however, increased from 5,000 in the 1970s to 32,000 by 2002.
Remember this, the next time Blabbermouth Biden talks about oil, gas, Alaska, caribou, polar bears, jobs, the environment, or the economy.

    ————

Better forage caused the herd size to increase, NOT the pipeline. Calving caribou move away from oil activity.

    http://arctic.fws.gov/issues1.htm#section4
“Caribou populations naturally fluctuate in response to weather and forage conditions, and all the arctic caribou herds in North America increased under favorable conditions in the 1980s.
There are fundamental differences between the calving areas of the Central Arctic and the Porcupine herds. In the case of the Central Arctic herd, there is a greater amount of alternative calving area available for displaced cows to move to because the mountains are much farther from the ocean.
The 1002 Area is only one-fifth the size of the area used by the Central Arctic caribou herd, but six times as many caribou use the 1002 Area. In the Arctic Refuge, where the mountains are close to the coast, few alternative areas would be available for displaced cows. If the 1002 Area was developed, the associated pipelines, roads, and structures would potentially impact the Porcupine Caribou herd by:

    * reducing the amount and quality of preferred forage available during and after calving,
    * restricting access to important coastal insect-relief habitats,
    * exposing the herd to higher predation, and
    * altering an ancient migratory pattern, the effects of which we can not predict.

A reduction in annual calf survival of as little as 5% would be sufficient to cause a decline in the Porcupine caribou population.”
    —————

    Another argument against the pipeline,
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exxon_Valdez_oil_spill

Also, higher energy efficiency has “produced” more oil than Alaska.

    1) Right. Attack someone for doing what his opponent did not, provide the sources for his arguments.

    2) Debate 101 okobserver: The one who advances the argument is the one obligated to support it. The one who copies and pastes from another source is the one who is obligated to identify his/her source. One’s opponent is not the person who should have to do the legwork, and it is outrageous to suggest that he/she should. Hank does this regularly (pastes without attribution to the source) and he is rightly raked over the coals for it. Telling someone to “go fetch” for his opponent’s source (which, btw, cosmos apparently did, did you miss that?) is argumentatively illiterate.

    3) “Man up”? “You would just say his source isn’t peer reviewed”? “Get a life”? How about you, got a coherent argument, or just empty ad hominems?

Sad the media has not/will not fully investigate the following events to prove/disprove their accuracy. Hopefully we will be hearing more about Obama’s character traits and past history in coming weeks.
This is a time line look at the life and times of Barack Obama… a year-by-year look at a guy we don’t know much about at this point. It’s lengthy, but worth the read. To our democrat friends, it’s not the party… it’s the person. Is this the guy you want leading the ‘change’?
