Tonight Sarah Palin will give her speech at the convention. It’s been a while since I’ve been this charged up about a presidential campaign.

I predict she will do a lot better than expected. I predict more people will watch her speech tonight than watched little Barry Apollo Obama. I predict that in one week McCain/Palin will lead Obama/Biden in the polls and they’ll never catch up.

    hehehehe

The RNC has released these excerpts of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech tonight.

“I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids’ public education better. When I ran for city council, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

On why she is going to Washington, D.C.:

“I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country.”

    On energy policies:

“Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems – as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines…build more nuclear plants…create jobs with clean coal…and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers.”

    On John McCain:

“Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.”

Could McCain’s Extremist Running Mate, Palin, Help Obama?

Sen. Barack Obama is enjoying some of his highest numbers so far in the daily presidential tracking polls I frequently cite. Gallup has him up by 8 points today. Rasmussen by 5.

The question is whether this is a result of Obama’s convention bounce, or Sen. John McCain’s seemingly, shall we say, adventurous selection of an extremist running mate.

Clearly she has accomplished what McCain could not: energizing Karl Rove’s far right Christian evangelical base (as some people would call it, the Republican wing of the Republican Party).

I like this analysis by the Globe & Mail:

“If there’s one demographic group that holds the key to this election, it would be working-class white women. Mr. McCain calculated that the untested Ms. Palin, mother of five with a reputation for feistiness, would help nail down the social conservatives and impress working-class women. He nailed down the social conservatives with Ms. Palin’s appointment. Working-class white women will be a harder crowd to impress.”

    Waiting for Sarah

Last week the acceptance speech of Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama drew 38 million viewers — 60 percent more than John Kerry’s 2004 acceptance speech.

It may not be 38 million watching tonight. But she’ll draw millions of Americans who don’t normally tune in politics. The convention so far has been fairly routine as these things go. Tonight, I wouldn’t miss it.

(CBS) Even after Sen. John McCain named her as his running mate on Friday, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin remained an unknown quantity to most Americans. Sixty-six percent had no opinion of her in a CBS News poll conducted over the weekend. In polling completed on Monday and Tuesday, sixty percent still had no opinion about her.

But of those who did have opinions, 26 percent of the most recently polled were favorable, while only 13 percent were not favorable.

More than one in four voters said that the vice presidential choices will matter this year, but few voters say that having Palin on the Republican ticket will change their vote. Just 14 percent said they are more likely to vote for McCain as a result of having Palin on the ticket, while 13 percent said they are less likely to do so. Sixty-eight percent said it won’t make a difference in their vote.

Seventy-four percent of voters said the addition of Joe Biden to the Democratic ticket made no impact on how they will vote. But those who said Barack Obama’s choice mattered to them were three times as likely to say that Biden will make them vote for Obama rather than against him.

Is Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska a strong leader, a brave reformer, a seasoned politician, and a highly experienced chief executive who is running a frontier state with crucially important oil reserves?

Or is she a lightweight neophyte who once ran a tiny town, has no foreign policy experience, has rarely traveled overseas, and is completely over her head?

    It depends whom you ask.

Huge Divide Over Gov. Sarah Palin In Poll

Rasmussen Reports is out with a poll that shows a massive divide among Republicans and Democrats over Palin – the newest figure on the national political stage.

Overall, 69 percent of Republican voters think Palin was a good choice to be John McCain’s vice presidential runningmate. By contrast, 63 percent of Democrats think she was a bad choice.

I can guess what her speech will be like. She’ll tell the tale of the scrappy small-town hockey mom who got a seat on the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and was shocked–shocked!–at the corruption she found there, and resigned.

Then she ran for governor and won: “new sheriff in town” yada, yada, yada. Will trumpet any accomplishment she can claim, and several she can’t.

The main theme will be how she took on the corrupt Republican party establishment and won (oh, wait. . . . . ).

This continual line of attack on Obama is weird. Apparently, Camp McCain thinks “you think my VP choice sucks? Look at your presidential candidate!” is going to work. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what people are going to do, and that won’t help McCain at all.

There will be one problem with Palin’s speech. She will not have written a single word of it, nor could she have conceived of a single sentence in it on her own. She has been cloistered for several days now, being drilled in every aspect of it. She ran through it this morning to an empty auditorium, to eliminate errors. Neither her dress, her appearance or anything she does or says will have originated in her own mind, which is why no one in the Republican Party is worried if McCocaine croaks, and Palin takes over. It won’t be like she is actually running the country.

    ———

    The short version is that,
    1) the U.S. does NOT have the oil reserves needed to significantly impact world oil prices, and

    2) we can “produce” much more oil with higher energy efficiency than with more domestic drilling.

Plus higher energy efficiency is cheaper than buying oil, faster, cleaner, doesn’t run dry, and is guaranteed.

Lots of details about how we can cut oil demand here,
    http://www.oilendgame.com/ReadTheBook.html

And some reasons why drilling in the Arctic Refuge (Palin’s solution(sic)) is the wrong idea.

Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee speech excerpts

Excerpts of their remarks have been released, with Huckabee attacking Barack Obama on foreign policy, Romney taking a none-too-veiled shot at Michelle Obama and Giuliani rallying to the defense of McCain’s pick for a running mate, Sarah Palin.

Huckabee: Maybe the most dangerous threat of an Obama presidency is that he would continue to give madmen the benefit of the doubt. If he’s wrong just once, we will pay a heavy price.

I’m not a Republican because I grew up rich, but because I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life poor, waiting for the government to rescue me.

Says Romney: Just like you, there has never been a day when I was not proud to be an American. We inherited the greatest nation in the history of the Earth. It is our burden and privilege to preserve it, to renew its spirit so that its noble past is prologue to its glorious future.

And at Saddleback, after Barack Obama dodged and ducked every direct question, John McCain hit the nail on the head: radical Islam is evil, and he will defeat it! Republicans prefer straight talk to politically correct talk!

Giuliani makes this case for Palin (the night’s featured speaker), saying she: represents a new generation. She’s already one of the most successful governors in America — and the most popular. And she already has more executive experience than the entire Democratic ticket. She’s led a city and a state. She’s reduced taxes and government spending. And she’s actually done something about moving America toward energy independence — taking on the oil companies while encouraging more energy exploration here at home. Taxpayers have an advocate in Sarah Palin — she even sold the former governor’s private plane on Ebay.

Also, the oil geology in the Arctic Refuge is different than Prudhoe Bay, and is unknown, except for one old (secret) test well.

Will Palin mention in her speech tonight that the Badami field, 1/2 way between Prudhoe Bay and the western edge of the Refuge, has NOT produced as expected?

It was shutdown before oil prices rose a few years ago, restarted when prices rose, and still is a low producer.

    Night of the GOP also-rans

“We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington – throw out the big government liberals and elect John McCain,” Mr. Romney said in his prepared remarks, adding that “The right course is the one championed by Ronald Reagan 30 years ago, and by John McCain today.”

Mr. Huckabee said in his prepared speech that Mr. McCain was advocating the right kind of change for Americans, not the Democrats. “John McCain doesn’t want the kind of change that allows the government to reach deeper into your paycheck and pick your doctor, your child’s school, or even the kind of car you drive or how much you inflate the tires,”

Web Site With Speeches and Sermons From Palin’s Former Church Shuts Down as Religious Views of Candidate Face Scrutiny

The part of the Web site no longer functioning appears to be the section where the sermons of senior Pastor Ed Kalnins were available, including one from 2004 — after Palin left the church — where he suggested heaven wasn’t necessarily in the cards for anyone who voted for Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

Also no longer available is the video of a speech Palin delivered in June at the graduation service for the church’s School of Ministry.

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/website-with-sp.html

    —-

They didn’t get it shut down quickly enough however! Both Palin’s speech and her pastors sermons are safe on other servers! Did I mention that we won’t be hearing about Pastor Wright in the future?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/02/palins-church-may-have-sh_n_123205.html

They are calling her worldview “controversial”. I think they are calling it that because such is not common on the coasts, whereas around here and other rural states, such worldviews are much more common.

He was surely welcome to appear in person the night he did speak from the White House.

That’s not what the news bits I’ve read have said. Here’s a quick rundown.
    1. Trying to distance themselves from the Bush admin, they didn’t want Dubya there.
    2. Along came Gustav, and Dubya felt he was needed in Nawlins to “oversee”.
    3. McCain & Co. breathed a sigh of relief.
    4. Dubya insisted that he speak via live satellite.
    5. McCain & Co. didn’t agree.
And the rest, as they say, is history.

One other thing. My daughter mentioned something about it being the first time in history that a sitting president not running as incumbant ever attended a convention “live”. Anybody know?

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/427xjuoj.asp
“One of the pieces of a solution is allowing exploration on that little 2,000 acre plot of land out of the 20 million acres up there in the coastal plain.”
    ———

The Gov. of Alaska does not know that Area 1002 is about 1,549,000 acres?

She does not know that recent bills in the U.S. Congress would open ALL but possibly 45,000 of those 1,549,000 acres to oil exploration?

(If she becomes VP, she serves as President of the Senate, and casts tie-breaking votes.)

She does not know that “2,000-acres” is a limit on ground contact of “production” facilities, and has NOTHING to do with “exploration”?

And she (incorrectly) seems to believe that the “coastal plain” in the Refuge has 20 million acres?

Then your Republican party “energy expert” is very, very confused and/or misinformed.

    okobserver, you are very wrong.

And WHY do you believe that legislation in Congress is just an “opinion” of “eco experts”?

    Go to http://thomas.loc.gov/

Research the bills that open the Refuge to drilling.

    For example,

    “S.2758

    e) Special Areas-

    (1) DESIGNATION-

    (A) IN GENERAL- The Secretary, after consultation with the State of Alaska, the North Slope Borough, Alaska, and the City of Kaktovik, Alaska, may designate not more than 45,000 acres of the Coastal Plain as a special area if the Secretary determines that the special area would be of such unique character and interest as to require special management and regulatory protection.

    SEC. 4. LEASE SALES.
    (d) Acreage Minimum in First Sale- For the first lease sale under this Act, the Secretary shall offer for lease those tracts the Secretary considers to have the greatest potential for the discovery of hydrocarbons, taking into consideration nominations received pursuant to subsection (b)(1), but in no case less than 200,000 acres.

SEC. 7. COASTAL PLAIN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.
    (3) ensure that the maximum surface acreage covered in connection with the leasing program by production and support facilities, including airstrips and any areas covered by gravel berms or piers for support of pipelines, does not exceed 2,000 acres on the Coastal Plain .”

A mid-winter shutdown could congeal the heated oil, and make a restart impossible until it warmed the next summer.

Well, well, well. As someone who has been disgusted with the republican party, I found the VP Candidate to be refreshing and new. Someone who remembers the conservative values which the party has strayed from.

Yet, she also showed that she also reflects a new breed of republican who can also embrace the change needed to grasp environmental issues out of the hands of the corporations which have banked on the old republicans.

But of course, the WEBLOG is not the place to discuss the republican candidates with any seriousness. There can be no real discussion on the issues or merits here.

This is the home of the irrational liberals who flood the blog with so much crap anyone trying to carry on an exchange of ideas – with any positive merit for republicans (or negative), will surely drown in the bullshit posting.

    Reality check.

For the most part, Palin hit this speech out of the park. The one sour note was the snark about Obama’s infamous San Fransisco line. Look at the audience Obama spoke to, and look to the obviously well dressed, prosperous looking and, frankly, ethnically homogenous group of people cheering that statement. In images, it is a serious disconnect. Every other snarky line and attack, however, was smartly delivered and smartly done.

But, it was a very, very smart speech overall. She stayed away from the cultural conservative red meat while saying things that appeal to the audience nevertheless. She navigated this election’s third rail for Republicans with ease.

The verdict is in. McCain made a smart choice. If she is vulnerable, and policy wise she should be, the Democrats are going to have to work very hard and very smart to derail her.

    And that’s a fact.

Now, I was curious. I don’t recall seeing the teleprompter so obviously in other speeches. What was up with that?

And no, everyone uses it, so I don’t buy the predictable Democratic snark that she needed it to be more obvious.

“bawhahaha. Yeah, that’s right up there with Saturday Night Live on the scale of importance.”

    Hey, shallow troll boy.

SNL arguably had a measurable effect on the Democratic primary this season by drawing attention to the behavior of some of the journalists asking questions in the debate.

However, it does not surpise me that a shallow troll boy like you wouldn’t get Colbert (who alas, probably does not have the influence of SNL, and whose satire probably goes right over your head).

The reaction from the Leftist Raadical Socialist Libs here is a great indicator of how successful Palin was tonight.

She wasn’t giving a speech to convert you Radicals, she was targeting the base to make sure they come out to vote, targeting those conservatives voting 3rd Party as a protest vote, and targeting some in the middle of the road. And maybe, capturing some old man and old lady Clinton supporters who usually just pull the D lever.

You Leftist Radicals, there’s no HOPE for you.

“Agnatha- sorry- but god I really don’t see it.

“I thought it was dry and boring really.”

You weren’t the intended audience (neither was I for that matter), but to evaluate it you need to see it for what it was, a speech that appealed to the right wing base without much of anything that would drive off the foul weather swing voters.

And really, the only way one would conclude that it was dry and boring would be if s/he made up their mind about the speech maker before seeing the speech. Hey, I despise this woman’s politics (most of it anyway) but it doesn’t do anyone any good to pretend that it was not an effective speech.

The one possible (and I am not saying it’s likely) drawback to the speech, it was the sheer red meat offered through the attacks on Obama. But even then, that’s the accepted role of the VP nominee, and if it backfires, it really isn’t her fault, it was the undertone of nastiness from those who cheered the lines. And frankly, while I don’t agree with her obviously, I don’t think she crossed the line like she could have.

Indeed. I, for one, don’t underestimate Sarah Palin at all. Her theocratic, apocalpytic worldview poses a mortal danger to this nation. She’s completely without scruple or personal integrity, and misuses political authority for personal reasons like other people breathe. She dissembles expertly and lies without hesitation.

I also believe that she is eminently defeatable. And I think the Obama campaign has the smarts to accomplish it.

I call it as I see it. I know a leftist when I see one. Democrats are different, so don’t get me wrong. There are leftist that are Democrats, but not all, clearly the majority of all Democrats are not leftist. Obama, Biden, Hillary…they are not leftist.

Some members who post on this blog, are though. And leftist is a terrible ideology to subscribe to. I don’t know if you’re a leftist CF2K, but if you are, that’s a damn shame.

I will own to that label.

I would definitely self-identify as a leftist activist. “Liberal” is too moderate for me. A lot of “liberals” supported the Vietnam War, for instance. They want change as long as they don’t have to change (or change much).

Still, I have to call myself a liberal just for convenience sake.

Saying I’m a leftist doesn’t mean that I want to “free the mice in a research lab.” It doesn’t mean I believe in socialism or government intervention in all aspects of society.

It means that I want society to serve the common good instead helping rich people get richer, which is what we’ve had essentially since Reagan.

When I was in high school, we had a friend who’s dad was basically a functioning drunk. He smoked about three packs of Camels a day and had such a scratchy voice, you could hardly understand him.

One day, our friend Bob was changing a flat on his jalopy, and he was having trouble getting the jack to lower.

So Bob’s dad comes out with a bourbon in one hand and a Camel in the other hand, and says in his slightly slurred, gravel voice, “Just drive it off the jack. Drive it off the jack, Bob. Drive the damn thing off the jack, Bob.”

That’s what I like about Conservatives. They’re so unselfconsciously unconcerned about consequences.

Sure, it screwed the country. But dammit, they drove it off the jack. “Just drive it off the jack!”

I’m sorry I haven’t been on-line for a while. I had to clean the CONs’ Palin jism from the inside of my monitor.

She reads a speech with skill.

    Irony is so… ironic.

All the RepubliCONs who’ve sneered at Obama’s obvious ability to communicate are creaming their jeans over “Trophy Veep’s”…, well… speech.

And the Washington Post reports she was reading from campaign boilerplate.

There was a flutter of attention when McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told a group of Post reporters and editors yesterday that his team was having to rework the vice presidential acceptance speech because the original draft, prepared before Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen, was too “masculine.” While we all wondered to ourselves what might make a speech masculine or feminine, no one batted an eye at the underlying revelation: that the campaign was writing the nominee’s speech before knowing who the nominee would be.

The GILF energized the base of the Republic Party tonight. Grant her that. But since when do Republic Party conventions (you’re all there because you all agree with each other) need to start to get interested on the third night of their convention? And since when has that newfound spark of life depended on the Vice-Presidential candidate?

The SnowBilly sure tapped her inner Mary Ann from “Gilligan’s Island” chops tonight. “I’m just a gal….”

Thursday night we’ll hear from the “Skipper.”

Unlike America, the Republic Party is still dependent on the twice-born conservative bloc: your “Franklins” your “Nathans” your “okobservers” your “Outlanders” et al. And they still don’t have a good word to say about John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term).

But the Sally Fields look-alike did her job tonight.

We all know how highly this forum’s CONs hold in rapturous esteem the ability to read a sermon speech.

Most of the mainstream Republic Party partisan are still waiting for (and expecting) the Gaffe that Keeps on Giving to top her “Bridge to Nowhere” fibs and her “taking on” new wealth-redistribution Windfall Profits Tax on Big Oil. They’re walking around with that creepy pasted-on smile McCoot gets. And if they were to fart, only dogs could hear it.

The only polls that count are the ones in November.

    The rest are biased fluff.

    ———

I want you all to take note of the above. If and when the polls shift the other way, he’ll be singing a different tune. The same goes for the other side. I saw it every day in 2004, which is why I don’t put a lot of stock in polls. These days, they shift almost by the hour.

  501. Monkeyhawk
    Posted September 4, 2008 at 2:00 am | Permalink

    “Predestined” –

I wrote about polls yesterday. No need to repeat.

The top-of-the-line results, which most news sources cite, are the least reflective of actual useful information that can be obtained from polling.

Yes, the mystical “internals” some people talk about but most people don’t understand; they’re important.

Some studies go down to the Zip Code level and compare like neighborhoods that migh be miles and miles apart.

The best way to analyze polls you don’t have all the data from is to monitor what the campaigns are doing in response to their polling.

The McSame campaign is expanding media purchases in formerly “safe” Red States. That can’t be good for the Republic Party. If you start seeing commercials for John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) on cable and local channels in Kansas, it’s probably time to pack up the kids and head for the hills and wait for Jesus.

But in previously “safe” Red States such as Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Kentucky, North Carolina (and others), the McC*nt campaign is pouring in millions of media dollars. That’s based on research and the research it’s based on is in the internals.
