Police statement wasn’t worth the wait

In June, three Wichita Police Department officers were suspended with pay for allegedly making racist and sexually graphic comments at a party. Over the summer, the stated reason for the department’s silence about the suspensions was that an investigation was ongoing — leading anyone to expect more information would come once the investigation was complete. When that day finally came Friday, though, a six-sentence statement from Police Chief Norman Williams (in photo) added nothing to the public’s understanding of the incident or the resulting discipline. “This thorough investigation demonstrates the Wichita Police Department’s commitment to integrity and community trust,” the statement concluded. Well, that wasn’t worth the wait — or sufficient to reassure some in the community that the officers involved were held accountable.

Tempest in a teapot. The eagle, especially racist columnist Mark McCormick, has been carrying on for months about some comments supposedly made by OFF DUTY officers at at PRIVATE party. Claiming harm to the black people, etc. In the meantime, black people were shooting each other, stabbing each other, beating each other…and all this paper cares about are some off the wall comments?

I am guessing the recent beating to death of a 2 year old by a black man won’t receive 1/10th the attention that some comments at a party have. Or the stabbing death of a black teenager over a domestic squabble won’t be highlighted for months. Sad set of priorities.

    Rap,
Good points. Who cares what remarks were made at a private party? Is there no venue where a person is allowed to say what they think? The PC thought police can come into your home now? What ever happened to freedom of speech? Freedom of expression?
You can burn our country’s flag, but God forbid you should use the “N” word or tie a noose.

White people kill each other everyday also. White people are involved in domestic violence everyday. Those off the wall comments are the reasons the flames of racism burn so brightly to this day. So don’t pretend Black people have a monopoly on doing harmful and irreverent deeds. Sad and backward way of thinking!!!!!!!!!!!

minor….the white people are not the ones demanding that people be fired over some comments made at a private party. The white people here are trying to call attention to the issues of murder/child abuse while the paper makes a big deal about some comments.

This paper’s harping on this tiny issue brings to mind the phrase about Nero fiddling while Rome burned. This paper has been going on and on and on for months about this stupid party and what might have been said…while paying minimal lip service to serious crimes.

minor…consider also…the accusation that the off duty police officers at the party are white..and the naacp and this paper is making a huge, non stop issue out of some comments…while virtually ignoring murders, violence, stabbings, etc.

The difference? The murders I refer to are black on black crimes…yet the paper and the naacp are all up in arms about some comments made by white officers.

    Who is the racist here?

Silly me,I always thought what you said in PRIVATE was just that, private. Damn guess I’ve been wrong all these years. I wonder if this big of a stink would have been raised if it had been BLACK cops being rascist?

Enforcement has discretion in their duties. Their attitudes and beliefs impact how they enforce for and against us. Private does not mean secret. Off-duty does not mean their oath or conduct doesn’t apply. Neutrality in attitude and beliefs, at all times, results in less prejudical enforcement. We should not employ those who have a “southern” attitude against others. Whether they are on the job or not.

If you are looking for White people, then you should continue reading some comments. Often the most hotly talked about some comments are a black man. They’re watching some comments and seeing what you’re doing.
