DNA Shows That Last Woolly Mammoths Had North American Roots
ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2008) — In a surprising reversal of conventional wisdom, a DNA-based study has revealed that the last of the woolly mammoths—which lived between 40,000 and 4,000 years ago—had roots that were exclusively North American.
The research, which appears in the September issue of Current Biology, is expected to cause some controversy within the paleontological community.
“Scientists have always thought that because mammoths roamed such a huge territory—from Western Europe to Central North America—that North American woolly mammoths were a sideshow of no particular significance to the evolution of the species,” said Hendrik Poinar, associate professor in the departments of Anthropology, and Pathology & Molecular Medicine at McMaster University.

Global cooling warning:
SUN HAS FIRST SPOTLESS CALENDAR MONTH SINCE 1913
Many have been keeping a watchful eye on solar activity recently. The most popular thing to watch has been sunspots. While not a direct indication of solar activity, they are a proxy for the sun’s internal magnetic dynamo. There have been a number of indicators recently that it has been slowing down.
August 2008 has made solar history. As of 00 UTC (5PM PST) we just posted the first spotless calendar month since June 1913. Solar time is measured by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) so it is now September 1st in UTC time. I’ve determined this to be the first spotless calendar month according to sunspot data from NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center, which goes back to 1749. In the 95 years since 1913, we’ve had quite an active sun. But that has been changing in the last few years. The sun today is a nearly featureless sphere and has been for many days:
And there are other indicators. For example, some solar forecasts have been revised recently because the forecast models haven’t matched the observations. Australia’s space weather agency recently revised their solar cycle 24 forecast, pushing the expected date for a ramping up of cycle 24 sunspots into the future by six months.

Here’s a story from NASA on sun spots. Global warming belivers and deniers shouldn’t get their panties in a wad.
I ask the editors again for a thread on the Spirit One church.
This church continues to display political messages on it’s very large outdoor sign.
If they wish to do so, I think it is only fair that their status as a tax exempt organization be reconsidered.
BluJay…
I may be wrong, but I thought they were already under investigation. Some of their signs in my opinion are a ways over the top. They certainly give me an uneasy feeling when I drive by.
Where is the Spirit One church and what does their sign say?
Vote McCoCaine or go to hell?
Palin was baptized at the Wasilla Assembly of God at 12, the Post reports, and has attended the church for most of her adult life. I know I want no part of the worldview espoused by Palin and her church. What is it all the Republicans have been yelling and screaming about? Something about the company kept?
Here’s sone examples (from many more) of what Palin’s pastor of over 30 years has to say.
———–
During the 2004 election, Kalnins praised Bush’s performance in debate with Sen. John Kerry, then offered a not-so-subtle message about his own preference: “I’m not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I’m sorry.” Kalnins said. “If every Christian will vote righteously, it would be a landslide every time.”
“What you see in a terrorist — that’s called the invisible enemy. There has always been an invisible enemy. What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what’s going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. … We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. … Jesus called us to die. You’re worried about getting hurt? He’s called us to die. Listen, you know we can’t even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. … I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say “war mode.” Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he’s like the good shepherd, he’s loving all the time and he’s kind all the time. Oh yes he is — but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war.”
He preaches repeatedly about the “end times” or “last days,” an apocalyptic prophesy held by a small but vocal group of Christian leaders. During his appearance with Palin in June, he declared, “I believe Alaska is one of the refuge states in the last days, and hundreds of thousands of people are going to come to the state to seek refuge and the church has to be ready to minister to them.”
http://tinyurl.com/6dz8yg
Linda, I watched the video of the good Rev. making that statement about Alaska being a refuge State, in the “last days” —
It disturbs me a little bit, that he also says the Church needs to be ready to meet their needs.
IF I understand his peculiar brand of eschatology right, HE believes that the True Church will be already “flown away” or “raptured” before the time of the “great tribulation” and thus, I am not sure which church he thinks will be around to meet the needs of all of those thousands of refugees to the “refuge state”…
Since the need for refuge states wont happen, in THEIR theology until AFTER the Rapture, then I am not sure just who he is “preaching” to… Unless he figures he has some “not so faithful” folks in his congregation…. folks who will be wailing and gnashing their teeth, because they didnt believe their fellow brethren and sisteren…
Sort of the same premise in Tim LaHay’s series, “Left Behind”
For a NON Religious Right perspective on LaHay’s “Left Behind” series, see Barbara Rossings treatment of Rapture, Hope, and Revelation, in her book linked below….

Obama states he believes in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. The Leftist Libs better make some statements about that before Obama clings to his faith much more.
A big thank you to KSN for doing a story on Nola Foulston and her corrupt D.A. office. It’s no surprise that a bully like Foulston and her hench-people would bend and twist the the truth for her political profit! For that matter, perhaps we should investigate why she has such a cozy relationship with taking kids and placing them in Youthville. The answer may be found by following the money. Perhaps that is why rumors are coming from Foulston’s office that she is contimplating retiring this year!

Nope, just pointing out they hypocrisy of the Left when it comes to a person’s choice of faith.
Obama claims to be a Christian and has said so several times on National TV.

If you dont know what Youthville is, perhaps you should find out??
Yep he has said that… However, he isnt a part of a “fringe” group… And I do think that makes just a wee bit of difference…
There arent many on the Left that DO try to hide their faith/beliefs….

That’s true, they just outright deny any connection to any faith. :D
And THAT, is a blatantly FALSE statement, as you well know… Just a plain LIE!!
Those not part of a faith journey on the Left, do not DENY it… They embrace it as a part of who they are as individuals…
Those who ARE part of a faith journey, also freely state that…
Those are true statements….

Why is that Chas? The very definition of leftists is a secular group whose practices and methods are in opposition to anything closely resembling what a Christian would do.
Notice I didn’t say Liberal, but Leftists.
Isn’t a politician saying ” I’m work for you” similar to “the check’s in the mail” ploy ?
Smells the same!
No, James, that is NOT the very definition of Leftist…. And you also know better than that…
And, I am not going to mess with your damned trolling…. especially not at this hour…. So, just knock it off now…. You are already digging yourself in deep!!
Please note — You distinctly said “hypocrisy of the Left” — NOT Leftists… Liberals are considered part of the Left….

Now that you know that I meant leftists, there is no spin now is there?
Well, I know many Leftists who are people of faith…. And they ARE Leftist…. AND Liberal….
Some are Christians… some are Buddhists…. some are Wiccan… some are neo-pagan… some are Native American… But still, people of Faith… and Leftists….
Interesting the McCain ‘claims’ he is for cap-and-trade. Is this the same McCain who has worked with Bush AGAINST it?

I wish we could cap the politicians before the stuff that comes out both ends buries us.
Here’s some more on McCain’s “Things are tough now, but we’re better off than in 2000″ economy. The reason McCain wants to continue bush’s failed economic policies is he doesn’t recognize the problem and further has no ideas or policies.

Earlier today, on one of these threads (I’m not gonna track down which one) I suggested that Todd Palin is the smoldering fuse for a future explosion surrounding the Moose-Dresser.
Here’s more evidence for those who might be interested in seeing how the Palin family’s psychodramatic soap opera might play out:
Today, Todd Palin’s former best friend and business partner attempted to have his divorce case quashed from public scrutiny.
The motion was denied.
Hey, maybe it’s coincidence. Maybe it’s irrelevant. But I bet we’ll find out more about Todd’s bout with “John Edwards disease,” as Alaskan bloggers are twittering about.

And what did Dubya do about it? Deny, blame, deny, blame…
MH,
Something isn’t clicking for me here. If you’re claiming Todd has Edwards Syndrome, then wouldn’t it be Todd and the business partner’s wife? (Or Todd and the business partner? :O) I thought the rumor was it was Sarah and the business partner. Either way, it would be interesting to know who the petitioner was.
According to the docket sheet that MH linked, there were co-Petitioners, Pre. An agreed action under Alaska law? It was interesting to note that it was the business partner who filed the motion, per the docket sheet.

I dunno either. I just think there’s more to be found about Alaskan politics and it’s gonna be interesting.
And it will all reflect back upon John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) and his decision-making process.
And as hard as the Republic Party CONs try to deflect the issue off to tangential nitpicks, the Moose-Dresser isn’t quite the All-American Lisa Loopner-esque (with the world-class egg salad recipe) Potemkin candidate they’d like you to believe she is.
And I offer these thoughts “with the heart of a servant.”
MH,
Getting a divorce isn’t against the law. Having an affair isn’t against the law. Immoral? That depends on how you look at it and which end (or side) you’re on. :)
VT,
Thanks for the explanation. I tried to get back to look at it again before I posted, but it timed out and I had to leave.
Lisa Loopner? Wasn’t she played by Gilda Radner on SNL?
And it will all reflect back upon John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) and his decision-making process.
Probably no more than McCain’s own divorce, and the right seems to think it was okay. Or is it that, in his case, morals and immorality don’t mean a thing? I’ve never figured that one out.
jjj, this one is for you:

Co-Petitioners? Meaning he and she co-filed?
Never mind. I don’t really need to know at this point.
Pre,
The link is timing out for me as well. I tried to get back to it before I posted earlier, and timed out. I suspect now that it is out there, there is a very heavy demand on the server. :-)
Yes, Pre, as I recall, the case had co-Petitioners, meaning as I interpret it that the parties filed together. Again, from memory, I believe the docket entries concerning the motion which was overruled listed him as a “Petitioner”, but that could just be the way Alaska designates the movant.
Just got through, Pre; he is denominated the “Petitioner”, and his former wife as a “Co-Petitioner” in the various docket entries. Don’t know what this really means, but there it is.
Yeah, I kinda figured it was getting hit hard. LOL
Sorry, I meant “together” instead of “co-file”. A duh moment. That sure could make it all simpler. Child custody then might be the thing that might be in disagreement, and apparently there was some of that. Kids being involved is always the tough part.
Don’t know what this really means, but there it is.
Neither do I. I’m only familiar with Petitioner and Respondent.
MH,
I guess we’ll see where this one goes…
From the docket sheet; stipulated child custody order, later modified on motion along with child support modification. Didn’t read (the docket sheet) like a case with an ongoing custody dispute.
You are correct; it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
Yes, I noticed it was about support, not visitation. That could mean a dozen different things, including a rise and fall in income for either, if they calculate the same as they do here.
The Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has angered green campaigners by describing their view on climate change as a “hysterical psuedo-religion”.
In an article in the News Letter, Mr Wilson said he believed it occurred naturally and was not man-made.
“Resources should be used to adapt to the consequences of climate change, rather than King Canute-style vainly trying to stop it,” said the minister.

‘Sammy and the Scientists‘
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/markdevenport/2008/08/sammy_and_the_scientists.html
“NI environment minister spurns climate Bill
Sammy Wilson, Northern Ireland’s Environment Minister, says he will only back carbon-cutting policies which achieve wider benefits and will oppose the Climate Change Bill. Senior scientists from the province have condemned his views on global warming.
Several Northern Ireland Fellows of the Royal Society – the UK’s premiere scientific body – contacted by ENDS said he was wrong. “Sammy Wilson is ill-informed on the reality of the situation, but I guess that he will not believe much of our present climate change is man-made until the water is lapping up his knees in East Belfast, which is low-lying,” said Sir Bernard Crossland, Emeritus Professor of Engineering at Queen’s University, Belfast.
Theoretical physicist Professor Phil Burke, also of Queen’s, said: “There is no doubt the very rapid increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activity is a major cause of climate change.”
Northern Ireland scientists researching climate change-related issues were also alarmed by Mr Wilson’s view. Professor Brian Whalley, a geomorphologist at Queen’s, said: “He should look at all the government-produced analysis, climatic and economic, before making such sweeping statements with no scientific validity.”
Professor Neil Adger, an expert on climate change adaptation from Northern Ireland now at the University of East Anglia’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, said: “The basic science is so clear and unambiguous that anyone denying it is either a fool or deliberately misleading others for political or other ends. The impacts of climate change, already observed and apparent, are everywhere and Northern Ireland is not immune.”
Scientists may be dismayed by his views, but there is no plan to meet with Mr Wilson in an attempt to educate him about the scientific consensus. Like the environmental NGOs in the province, they appear to have concluded there is little chance of him changing his mind.”

Nevada: A Social and Economic Model for Our Nation?
Think Again.
This study examines the social and economic infrastructure and stability of Nevada, a state built mainly on gambling revenue since 1931.
by Chad Hills
Beyond the Limits of Recreation: Social Costs of Gambling in Southern Nevada is a report that examines the condition of a gambling-dependent state after 70-plus years of being the nation’s gambling Mecca. Professors Thompson and Schwer offer a comprehensive report.
In early February of 2003, an insightful report on gambling, titled Beyond the Limits of Recreation: Social Costs of Gambling in Southern Nevada, was released at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the Far West and American Popular Culture Association. This is a significant study on the social costs of gambling in a “mature” gambling community such as Nevada. The researchers and authors of this report are credible gambling analysts from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas (UNLV).
This study examines the social and economic infrastructure and stability of Nevada, a state built mainly on gambling revenue since 1931.
As you read this study, pay special attention to several key findings:
Gambling has become more popular among women. Lotteries, free standing slot and/or video machines, bingo games, and neighborhood casinos can be very enticing to female participants (p. 6).
Gambling addiction’s impact on marriages and families is substantial. Nearly a third of the people interviewed were either divorced or separated, many crediting gambling as the main source of contention (p. 7).
Note: Former surveys of Gamblers Anonymous members have indicated that problem gamblers themselves tend to underestimate the significance of their gambling addiction, while spouses often indicate that gambling has a much larger impact on their marriage.
One-third of the problem gamblers surveyed, work – or have worked – in the casino industry. Once again, this research supports availability and exposure as key elements in facilitating gambling pathology (pp. 8-9).
Video poker machines were a favorite among the respondents. Over two-thirds found the machines constitute “serious” problems for them. Slot machines were also considered to be quite addictive (p. 9).
Of the gamblers who went to other people for money, over half went to their spouse or passed bad checks, and almost one-third went to their children for help. The average debt was $57,160 (p. 10).
Almost half of the respondents were led to bankruptcy through gambling, and over half indicated that they had stolen money or materials to gamble or to pay gambling-related debts (p. 11).
Workplace productivity losses accounted for over a day’s work each month. (p. 12) The survey found that two-thirds of the respondents had planned suicides as a result of gambling. One-third had actually attempted suicide (p. 13).
The report mentions that most statistics are conservative. Errors most likely occurred in underestimating actual numbers (p. 14).
Read the Report — Beyond the Limits of Recreation: Social Costs of Gambling in Southern Nevada (PDF)
“The challenges we face reflect the unique conditions of today’s Nevada, and our history. For years, our economy has depended almost exclusively on tourism and gaming [gambling], rather than by exporting goods and services. Three out of every four of our tax dollars are collected from sales and gaming taxes; taxes vulnerable to swings in the economy.”
…”Implicit in this tax strategy was a belief that the revenues from gaming and tourism could keep pace with our growing and diverse population. Unfortunately, this strategy has failed.”
…”My fellow Nevadans, the lesson from the last 20 years is clear; our revenue system is broken because it has relied on regressive and unstable taxes [from gambling].”
