'<b>Palin's Anti-Rape-Investigation Stance Raised by McCain Campaign. Will Reporters Question?</b>'
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eric-schmeltzer/palins-anti-rape-investig_b_126763.html
"The McCain campaign paints this as a process story - that Monegan was going to DC to get money to prosecute rape, when the Governor didn't OK that request.
I'd say it raises a huge question. Why is it that the Governor of the state with the highest per capita rate of forcible rape, who requested hundreds of billions in earmarks, not want to fight for Federal dollars to help law enforcement in the state investigate and prosecute rape?"

This is great!

Plans to donate to Planned Parenthood in the name of Sarah Palin.

Planned parenthood will send a thank you card for every person who donates to Palin.
---------------------------------
As long as it's not initiated by Planned Parenthood.

If it is initiated or promoted by Planned Parenthood, they could lose a large portion of their budget supplied through government contracts and their tax status.

We need to have that debate over the role of government that keeps getting put off. It's apparent that creating an expen$ive and incompetent military state while drastically cutting taxes is unacceptable.

Contrary to AW's seeming assertion, Bill Clinton did not tax us to death (apparently AW has forgotten that 6 of those years Clinton was facing against a hostile GOP Congress). Clinton simply balanced the budget, yes, by raising taxes, but also controlling spending.

Those who pretend (or perhaps ignorantly believe) that this is a conservative or Republican virtue simply haven't looked at the figures. Get a calculator go over the receipts/outlays during the Reagan years--compute percentages of the total. You'll find nearly every discretionary item of any note reduced--I'll give Reagan credit for that. Health and Human Services went from 36 percent of the budget to a mere 15 percent (and that's not just "welfare"--not even close--but our idiot righties will certainly label it as such).

Defense spending was hard to determine and part of it was in the "black" budget (secret spending! can you believe that crap?). The Defense department alone increased from about 24 to about 29 percent of the whole.

What's the point? Sure, maybe domestic spending wasn't slashed as vigorously as some would like. But the tax cuts were put in effect <I>without any means of paying for them </i>. <I>Every</i> Reagan budget had a built-in deficit. The plan, obviously, was to <i>deliberately</i> create huge deficits--and then go hog wild on slashing the portions that didn't feed the military-industrial complex.

Someone at this point will mention Social Security. Well, that was still the "third rail"--there were still too many New Deal Democrats alive who would know better. As it was always intended as a trust fund (you pay in, the government pays you back), it was taken off-budget.

The truth, of course, is that the plans to privatize under Bush were nothing more than legalized theft. And, as KFG has pointed out, look at great Social Security would be doing now if it was allowed to brave the open markets.

So did anyone try to balance the budget? Impossible under Reagan: undoing or modifying any portion of Kemp-Roth was verboten, period. They even tried a mindless gimmick, the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Act, which produced automatic across-the-board cuts in all departments if balanced budget was not reached.

You know what? When the bluff was called, they <i>still</i> couldn't balance the budget--not with Reagan's priorities dominating. But the automatic cuts were also evaded, because it turned out that automatic cuts would cripple essential function in, well, pretty much ever corner of government. A breathtakingly dumb idea.

When the predictable carnage of Reagan's 3-trillion-dollars party was left on George W. Bush's doorstep, Mr. Read-My-Lips raised taxes. But only after a multi-billion dollar S&L bailout and two stock market crashes. The collapse of the Soviet Union--the grand enemy--also caught Poppy off guard.

We've been down this road before, and not just in the 1980s. Not even just in the 1920s.

You see, however much some will whine about progressive taxation, the fact is that government has to be funded and, once those priorties are decided, <i>adults</i> pay for the friggin' meal they ordered. Yeah, it's "unfair" that a rich person pays a higher percentage. I have one vote and Charlie Keating, if he's out of prison, has one vote. As it should be.

When I can get five senators--or, hell, even my own Congressperson--to meet with me in private, we'll talk about the terrible unfairness of the progressive tax. It's not redistribution. It's asking a proper share of burden from those who receive the greatest benefits from government (even though they like to deny that government does <i>anything</i> for them!).

P.S. Did someone mention a Depression? Look up the taxation figures under FDR.

"Bill Clinton who increased the national debt 1.5 trillion dollars"

The ONLY increase in the debt during the Clinton years was due to interest accrual on the Reagan-Bush debt.

"Good luck trying that during a depression"

In 1993 Clinton did that during the Bush recession - the reduction in long-term interest rates that followed helped get us out of that recession. Are you acknowledging that Bush 2 is doing Daddy one better by plunging America into a DEPRESSION?

Repugnican do take care of their own:
"Florida authorities had said their investigation was hampered because neither Foley nor the House would let its investigators examine his congressional computers.

In a letter to the FDLE obtained by The Associated Press, House Deputy General Counsel Kerry Kircher wrote that because the data "may contain legislative information that is constitutionally privileged ... and because Mr. Foley has not waived that privilege ... we cannot simply give you access."

The Florida agency had been working with the FBI and Foley's attorneys to gain access to information on the computers. Foley's attorneys have declined to comment throughout the investigation.

Too funny;
'Obama came up with yet another way to poke fun at McCain for his comment Monday that the fundamentals of the economy were strong. "This comment was so out of touch that even George Bush's White House couldn't agree with it when they were asked about it. They had to distance themselves from John McCain."

President Bush has used the same language many times but his press secretary would not repeat the line Wednesday in the face of historic financial turbulence.

Palin stonewalling the investigation, this isn't going to play with anyone except the faithful. We have had enough with stonewalling and cover ups this past 8 yrs. not to recognize it when we see it.
Mccain should have vetted her!

You know I don't want to take the rich's money- I just want them to be more responsible for when they keep stomping on the poor.

If you've got that kind of money, create good jobs and pay your employees part of that wealth for it is on their backs that you earn your money.

And yeah, pay your share of taxes, quit complaining about it and stop asking for corporate welfare.

They should have addressed this vulture mentality after rumors largely destroyed the first financial company before the bail out.

An unscientific poll from yahoo:
Q. The Fed's expensive rescues and Wall Street's turbulent week have sparked anxiety worldwide. How nervous are you?

Extremely nervous. I think this a true crisis with far-reaching implications 46%
Somewhat nervous. Times may be pretty tough for a while but we'll recover. 35%
Not very nervous. People and the media are overreacting. 17%

I think the chart's figures might be off a bit, but the pattern is indisputably correct.

"SO your solution is to exploit the rich and steal their hard earned money?"

   Yeah that's pretty much it.

Oh except for the "hard earned money" part.

I've never known or met a person that had a lot of money that was not a jerk.
