Palin has a love for the fascists and anti-Semites.
From:
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_09/014661.php
PALIN AND PEGLER…. In her convention speech last week, Sarah Palin quoted “a writer” who extolled the virtues of small-town America. Palin didn’t identify the “writer” for a very good reason — she was quoting the belligerent right-wing columnist Westbrook Pegler.
It was an interesting source for Palin to use in such a high-profile setting.
It’s an odd source because Pegler, who moved further right as his career went on, ended up very, very far out. Frank notes that he talked hopefully of the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt.
He was also known for what Philip Roth described as his “casual distaste for Jews,” which had become so evident by the end that he was bounced from the journal of the John Birch Society in 1964 for alleged anti-semitism. According to his obituary, he’d advanced the theory that American Jews of Eastern European descent were “instinctively sympathetic to Communism, however outwardly respectable they appeared.”
So, let’s see here, the McCain campaign wants to cut off U.S. financial support to Israel, Palin is quoting a notorious anti-Semite at the Republican convention, and Palin’s church welcomes the “Jews for Jesus” crowd.
No wonder Ed Koch finds these guys scary.
A day after Dennis Rhodes lost his life in a rescue attempt on the Chikaskia River in Sumner County, family and friends said his selfless act typified the kind of man he was.
Rhodes, a 47-year-old native of Argonia and former volunteer emergency worker, died Sunday from injuries he sustained during a rescue attempt late Saturday on the rain-swollen river, the city’s mayor said.– Wichita Eagle excerpt
We opine, insult, call names on this blog day after day and think we are making a diffrence in the world.
IMO the man metioned above was doing something to make the world better and in the process lost his life.
I know with out a doubt that some who post on here will try to minimize this man’s actions by saying things “he wasn’t properly trained or equipped or he should have left it to the pros” etc.
Maybe those statements are right. Who knows and what does it matter? What does matter is that one person was willing to risk all for the benefit of others. How many here would be willing to take that risk?
My heart goes out to his family friends department and town. What a sad day.
Former emergency worker doesn’t mean he didn’t have the proper training. But he should had known not to go in there without proper equipment.
This is a prime example of why.
MP, I seriously doubt that Palin knew who she was quoting- because evangelicals are all about helping Israel as if they are saving themselves- because that is what they believe will save them.
Largest protest in Alaskan history targets the fascist Palin. Republicans can only respond with death threats and harassment.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/14/palin-met-by-hundreds-of_n_126276.html
“Despite overcast skies and a forecast for rain, there was a rally here today. Oh man, was there! In fact, it was by most accounts the largest protest rally in the history of Alaska. The Anchorage Daily News wrote that the rally drew an “estimated” 1500 people. Let me be clear: the organizers used a hand-clicker and counted at least 1,483 Alaskans, mostly women, who showed up to say that Sarah Palin does not speak for them.”
I didn’t say he didn’t have proper training what I’m saying is that we sit here on this blog thinking we are making a difference with our comoments and opinions and here is a man who went and actually tried to make a difference
“MP, I seriously doubt that Palin knew who she was quoting- because evangelicals are all about helping Israel as if they are saving themselves- because that is what they believe will save them.”
She is a fundy. Her goal is to help Israel because it’s supposed to bring back Jesus who will slaughter all the Jews except the 144,000 who convert to Christianity. Not exactly a pro-Israel position in the end.

No doubt that would be true, but the George W. Bush speech writer who composed her acceptance speech did.
My post from yesterday on the Palin: the victim thread:

The victim’s quote of Westbrook Pegler and the fallout from that:
Interest in Pegler was recently revived when Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin quoted him in her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. “We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity”, she said, a Pegler quote that also appeared in the book “Right From the Beginning” by Pat Buchanan. She did not acknowledge Pegler by name, merely citing ‘a writer’.[2] The speech was written by Matthew Scully, a senior speech writer for George W. Bush.[3]
Following the Palin acceptance speech New York Times columnist Frank Rich provided an analysis of the political significance of quoting Pegler. Mr. Rich noted that “Pegler was a rabid Joe McCarthyite who loathed F.D.R. and Ike and tirelessly advanced the theory that American Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe (“geese,” he called them) were all likely Communists.”[4] He suggested that Palin’s use of a quote from “once powerful right-wing Hearst columnist Westbrook Pegler” was intended to send a subtle but unmistakable signal to far right wing supporters. [5]
About the same speech, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote: “Fascist writer Westbrook Pegler, an avowed racist who Sarah Palin approvingly quoted in her acceptance speech for the moral superiority of small town values, expressed his fervent hope about my father, Robert F. Kennedy, as he contemplated his own run for the presidency in 1965, that ’some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies.’[6][7] It might be worth asking Governor Palin for a tally of the other favorites from her reading list.”[8]

========================
I read your entry and it looks to me your accusing of Palin’s use of the English language as some sort of collusion for racist activities.
I think you have used the words black and negro in your life.
I can easily conclude that you are racist based on those word uses, utilizing the same logic that you present.
By the way Doug.. your interpretation of the 144,000 is inaccurate if you take it in context with the rest of the Bible:
All Israel Will Be Saved (Romans 9)
25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this is my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”
28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.
Palin, lying about lies? Hmmmmm…….

“Nothing against cows. Nothing against high-school BFFs and being true to your school. But a different picture of Sarah Palin is beginning to emerge. The McCain campaign would like us to see a straight-talking, gun-toting, moose-eviscerating, lipstick-wearing frontierswoman. Instead, we’re beginning to discern an ambitious, opportunistic politician who makes no bones about rewarding friends and punishing those who stand in her way — and who believes that truth is nothing more, and nothing less, than what she says it is.”
From the above link. Fascinating.
E.J. nails it today:

Well, if Steven Davis is going to recycle, far be it form me not to be eco-blog friendly. This is my post from the same “victim” thread:

That Palin girl. She was one that believed her teacher when she said that “girls could grow up to be anything they wanted to be”. She took it to heart. She thought she could be an athlete, she was right. Then a mayor, then a governor, now a VP?
Of course a lot of mothers and fathers that repeated those words to their own precious daughters now shamelessly lie and try to assassinate Ms. Palin’s character. Their reason? Because she doesn’t agree with them politically.
I wonder what they would do if it were their daughter up there taking the hits while trying to break new ground?
————–
Some one needs to be keeping track of the left’s spasmodic character assassination efforts. The latest “scandal” I read was that she installed a tanning bed. Yep, a tanning bed. And a lady at a tanning bed place didn’t think it was “normal” to have a tanning bed. They are getting desperate folks.
I’ll see if I can find or create a comprehensive list later.
Sarah Palin. Under the left’s skin like scabies.
Steven,
Now is correct…not the way you had it posted.
“Instead, we’re beginning to discern an ambitious, opportunistic politician who makes no bones about rewarding friends and punishing those who stand in his way — and who believes that truth is nothing more, and nothing less, than what he says it is.””

Gore’s new 100-foot houseboat is the latest target of critics’…
“His large Nashville home, utility bills and jet travels have drawn flamethrowers over the last year and a half. Now, it’s a houseboat he bought this summer.
“Here’s the good news for him,” said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “It doesn’t matter a whit. He’s out of politics. He’s won the Nobel Prize, the Academy Award and goodness knows what else. … He’s got the last laugh on anybody.”
The latest angry anti-Gore round boiled up when radio talk show host Steve Gill, a regular Gore basher, fired up listeners over the family’s new 100-foot houseboat that’s docked on Center Hill Lake.
As he often does, Gill labeled Gore a hypocrite who preaches energy conservation to curb what Gill refers to as “so-called global warming,” but who doesn’t practice it.”

Obama campaign rolls out new ‘faith merchandise’
(CNN) – The Obama campaign is preparing rolling out a new line of “faith merchandise” – the latest move in an ambitious effort to win over religious voters.
“Check out the Believers for Barack, Pro-Family Pro-Obama, and Catholics for Obama buttons, bumper stickers and signs….” says Obama Deputy Director of Religious Affairs Paul Monteiro in an e-mail obtained by the Beliefnet Web site.
“Believers for Barack rally signs and bumper stickers, along with all Pro-Family Pro-Obama merchandise, are appropriate for people of all faith backgrounds. We’ll soon be rolling out merchandise for other religious groups and denominations, but I wanted to get this out to you without delay,” he adds.

“(CNN) — It appears Barack Obama’s teleprompter is hitting the campaign trail.
The Democratic presidential nominee has never tried to hide the fact he delivers speeches off the device, though normally he doesn’t use one at standard campaign rallies and town hall events.
But the Illinois senator used a teleprompter at both his Colorado events Monday — making for a particularly peculiar scene in Pueblo, where the prompter was set up in the middle of what is normally a rodeo ring.”

WHITEHOUSE: Gentlemen, we’re in the middle of a near total mortgage system meltdown in this country. We have a health care system that burns 16 percent of our GDP, in which the Medicare liability alone has been estimated at $34 trillion. We’re burning $10 billion a month in Iraq.
This administration has run up $7.7 trillion in national debt, by our calculation. And there is worsening evidence every day of global warming, with worsening environmental and national security ramifications. In light of those conditions, do any of you seriously contend that drilling for more oil is the number one issue facing the American people today?

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin promotes herself as a small-government conservative. But when Alaska government officials wanted to shut down a money-losing creamery, the governor overturned the decision after dairy farmers near her hometown complained the loss of subsidies would cripple them.
On June 8, 2007, a board overseeing the 71-year-old state-run Matanuska Maid creamery announced the business would close after amassing $1.5 million in red ink since 2005, the result of a run-up in milk prices and other essentials. “I feel we are safeguarding the public interest in the decision that has been made,” Mac Carter, chairman of the Alaska Creamery Board, said in a letter to the Palin administration.
On June 16, 2007, Gov. Palin attended a rally by dairy farmers near her hometown of Wasilla who pleaded that the creamery stay open to help them and other members of the local dairy industry. “Things are kind of a mess right now with what’s happening with Mat-Maid, and we’re going to clean it up,” the governor said at the event.
She then sacked the creamery board and replaced it. The new board, headed by one of her childhood friends, ordered the creamery kept open. Six months later — after the business racked up more than $800,000 in additional losses, according to state officials — the new board ordered it closed again.

Bush announcing a per diem for all evacuees, will pay for all debris removal, will pay for all ‘preparedness expenses’. Oh what a difference an election makes!

John McCain is quoting Herbert Hoover almost verbatim.

Everyone seems to be so against Palin’s Christianity, and yet here’s Obama advertising his.
Everyone? Obviously not, evidenced by the call to the Saddleback minister by Sarah Palin. At the very least, the announcement of this call was purely political, if not the call itself pre-planned. To the Evangelicals, this is proof of her faith. The right is being played.
There is not and should not be a religious test to qualify for a public office.
Correct in ALL respects. But that includes ALL religions, not just Christianity. Even before Obama announced his candidacy, cries of “Muslim! Muslim!” were heard on every right-wing talk show and throughout the Internet.

Israeli FM has large lead in party leadership race: poll
Israeli Foreign Minister and contender for the Kadima party leadership Tzipi Livni has a 20 percent lead over her closest rival ex-defence minister Shaul Mofaz, a poll released on Monday reported.
Livni secured 48 percent backing of Kadima members asked, compared with 28 percent for Transport Minister Mofaz, according to the survey broadcast by private television channel 10 two days before the actual vote on Wednesday.
The two other candidates, Public Security Minister Avi Dichter and Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit, garnered only six percent support each.
Livni and Mofaz are the top two candidates to take over the leadership of the ruling centrist Kadima party after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who is being investigated over several corruption allegations, stands down.

Let’s see….The $40,000 grant from Obama’s Woods Fund to the AAAN constituted about a fifth of the Arab group’s reported grants for 2001, according to tax filings obtained by WND. The $35,000 Woods Fund grant in 2002 also constituted about one-fifth of AAAN’s reported grants for that year.
The co-founder of the Arab group in question, Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi, also has held a fundraiser for Obama. No one here is without an opinion and everyone here is sure the way the see things is the only way to see them. Sides were chosen long ago, daily those are argued. No one has changed an oppossing opinion yet.

Common plastics chemical linked to human diseases
LONDON (Reuters) – A study has for the first time linked a common chemical used in everyday products such as plastic drink containers and baby bottles to health problems, specifically heart disease and diabetes.
Until now, environmental and consumer activists who have questioned the safety of bisphenol A, or BPA, have relied on studies showing harm from exposure in laboratory animals.
But British researchers, who published their findings on Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analyzed urine and blood samples from 1,455 U.S. adults aged 18 to 74 who were representative of the general population.
Using government health data, they found that the 25 percent of people with the highest levels of bisphenol A in their bodies were more than twice as likely to have heart disease and, or diabetes compared to the 25 percent of with the lowest levels.

My only ’second-guessing’ there would be in regards to the guys who decided to go rafting in the flood.
My daughter knows someone who is friends with the “guys” who were rafting. “Guys” actually is two guys and two girls. Dumb, dumb, dumb, teenagers. The only thing that saved them was the fact that one of them had a cellphone and called for help. From the account I heard, they, too, almost lost their lives and will carry the guilt of Dennis Rhodes’ death forever.
Apparetly, you choose to ignore the terrorist, crooks, and lobbyist the One hangs with in favor of a VP nominees attemt to save a failing local business.
So now you’re saying the loss of the dairy is Obama’s fault? That’s all you’ve got? Sarah Palin keeping that dairy open, knowing full well it wouldn’t recover, and allowing it to go even further into debt is okay.
Try reading the entire article. It’s from the Wall Street Journal, not some “leftist rag”.
Why are the lefties so fraid of a powerful woman?
Why are the righties so afraid of a powerful (half) black man?
If Gore invented the internet, then John Mccain clearly created the Blackberry! Who knew?
“Holtz-Eakin also defended McCain’s assertions about the fundamentals of the U.S. economy being strong and cited the Republican presidential candidate’s work on the Senate Commerce Committee, which oversees telecommunications, as part of his qualifications to lead the country through a financial crisis.
“You’re looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create,” Holtz-Eakin told reporters while holding up a Blackberry device.
I’m wondering if anyone here actually knows what either of these candidates really stand for?
Do you?
Or have you, like the posters here, formed an opinion based on gender, race, or political party?
“Bush announcing a per diem for all evacuees, will pay for all debris removal, will pay for all ‘preparedness expenses’. ”
Enough of this nonsense. Everytime there is a hurricane, the American people get socked. We pay more for gas because of fears about the refineries along the gulf. We pay more in insurance because the insurance industry takes a hit paying out on hurricane policies, and we pay tax dollars to help the communities rebuild. We do this: Over-and-over-and-over again.
We need to stop some of this nonsense. Particularly when we are talking about half million dollar beach homes which serve as second vacation homes.
Declare our entire shoreline a national park in abeyance the next disaster. Say a quarter mile, half mile inland? If you have a vacation or beach homoe in that proximity, and it is destroyed – first you are not eligible for any federal relief in replacing the home on the beach. Possibly provide funding, as they did during Katrina, to rebuild elsewhere. The beach front property reverts to public land. A national shoreline for ALL Americans to enjoy. Let the nature rebuild the sand and dunes.
No problem with helping everyone as we handout to those truely in need. But do not keep building on ground where the chances are it will happen again.
Whether it’s a rich man’s cottage or a poor single mothers shack – don’t rebuild on the shore.
And another thing that ticks me off. Those who stay at a location after mandatory evacuations should be forced to sign a statement acknowledging:
1. You may die
2. No First Responders will risk their lives to save you.
3. You will not get food or water.
4. If you are evacuated, when conditions are safe, you will be charged for the cost of rescue.
You will pay for your helicopter seat, boat passage, bottled water, and bandages.
5. No claims will be paid for damages resulting from your staying after the mandatory evac order.

The above is in reference to her bridge to nowhere story. She states that whopper, admits later it is a falsehood, and then goes about repeating this initial whopper. I’d clarify it for you, but your contortions suggest that you indeed got it. As I stated, I doubt Palin knew who she was quoting, but Matt Scully, surely knew.

AmWay, regarding your post at 11:28 a.m. I’m in total agreement with both parts; I would go a step further, btw, and exercise eminent domain to push the housing back a minimum of two miles. As you note, do it now, not after another hurricane comes through; pay for the property, demolish the structures, and let the beach revert.
The only problem is that if there is continued erosion, the “mile” line continues to move. Perhaps there should be no structures permitted within ten miles, with the understanding that if erosion continues, the owners are assuming the risk, with a blanket prohibition of any aid in the event of future destruction by a hurricane or other natural disaster which regularly (more than once each 25 years) affects the region.
“Monegan says while no one directly demanded Trooper Mike Wooten’s dismissal, he felt pressured to do so by Palin, her husband and staff.”
“e-mails, which were released to reporters, show that Palin reported to Monegan that Wooten threatened her father.”
“The final straw came in late June, when Commissioner Monegan arranged for another unauthorized trip to D.C. to request more money from Congress”
If no one SAID to ole Walt Monegan “FIRE HIM”, just how did he feel “threatened”?
Looks a lot like one persons word over anothers.
“do it now, not after another hurricane comes through;”
Feds do something similiar along the flood plains of the Miss and Mo rivers.
“continued erosion, the “mile” line continues to move.”
According to GW buffs, the shore line will surely be moving inland, at least until the next ice age approaches. Regardless, the rule applies to whereever the shoreline is.

Which candidate VP pick was it again that wouldn’t see election day?
“unauthorized trip to D.C. to request more money from Congress”
Did you all catch this: Palin told him NO mo MONEY. But the liberal disobeyed his leaders and went to Washington to demand mo MONEY.
Palin didn’t want mo MONEY from Washington.
Palin says “If Alaska wants to persue rape prosecutions, we’ll pay for it ourselves!” Thanks, but No Thanks!
(CNN) — Both Barack Obama and John McCain have strongly benefited from Wall Street this election cycle, an analysis from the Center for Responsive Politics reports.
According to the non-partisan research organization, employees of security and investment firms have donated nearly $10 million to Barack Obama this year and close to $7 million to McCain’s presidential bid.”
Although that sounds like a lot of change – it really doesn’t sound like change to me.
AmWay, the line moves, the rule applies is your position, as I understand it. What is to be done with those structures built at a time where the line is more than the prohibited distance, then over time, the line moves, and the structure is within the prohibited distance? It seems to me at that point there could be a repetitive “buyout” of property as this occurs.
BTW, I don’t think the concern over continued erosion is limited to GW buffs. To my mind, this is an inevitable process of continuous wave action against a fixed object, regardless of GW.
Palin didn’t want the police chief going to the Pork Meister Stevens and making a request down on her priority list, and risk alienating the Pork Producer.

I cannot believe what I am watching on C-Span. During the night, the democrats in the Congress got together and created a bill that would stop the U.S. would from drilling EVER in Alaska, offshore drilling, nothing in the United States, no to clean coal and liquid technology, no to building refineries in America.
What is wrong with these democrats.??!!! In addition, they have blocked a yes, no vote on the bill in the House for months. They are not just voting against the Republicans, they are voting against us Americans. The words of Nancy Pelosi that they would be a non-bipartisan Congress and this is most definitely not just non-bipartisan but it is Non-American.
I don’t know about you all but I sure can’t afford anymore higher prices at the pump. When Opec finds out what our Congress has done, they will no longer have a reason to keep their prices down. We will be at their mercy. And yes, we need fuel and gasoline in the mean time when we are discovering new energy. So what if we can’t drill our way out, we have nothing in place yet to completely be free of using gasoline in our cars. Get REAL!!!!!
“it is Non-American”
Democrats don’t really care about the average Joe.
They must know this forces the price of oil up and probably believe it will force the US into immediate new energy sources.
But it’s going to wreck havoc with our pocket books, business, and prices we pay for all products.

That’s simply not true. I like a lot of Liberal actors; Streisand, Baldwin and etc.
However, I don’t live my life as liberals do with their ideology. What an actor does on stage, if it is controversial I don’t have to spend my dollars on it to go see it.
Premising life with a political ideology is just stupid.
Protesting for the sake of protesting is just stupid. Arm flailing over politics without having a plan other than to do nothing and withdrawing from the world is just stupid.
Oh yeah, I like the Dixie Chicks too, but certainly don’t like their political ideology.
Lib ideology tends to nurture ego over common sense; ideology over pragmatism; chronic objection to what others do rather than ‘live and let live.’

Where’s the Topic investigating the Taser Incident with the Trooper electrifying a 10-yr old kid?
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122064605094904757.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
How did Troopergate begin?
It started in early 2005, before Sarah Palin was elected Alaska’s first woman governor in 2006. Her sister, Molly McCann, was going through a bitter divorce with her trooper husband, Mike Wooten, and obtained a domestic violence protective order in 2005 that triggered an investigation by the Alaska State Troopers into Mr. Wooten’s conduct.
During one dispute in February 2005 which Sarah Palin said she overheard on a phone call with her sister, Mr. Wooten threatened that “your dad will eat an f—ing bullet if he gets you an attorney,” according to a complaint Sarah Palin filed with his superiors in 2005. The complaint also said that when Sarah Palin’s husband, Todd, advised Mr. Wooten to act peacefully in the divorce two months later, Mr. Wooten told his wife she’d better “put a leash on your sister” or he’d “bring Sarah Palin down.”
Believing the troopers weren’t being thorough enough, Gov. Palin and her husband spent $1,000 on a private investigator. Over time, a total of 35 allegations were leveled at Mr. Wooten by the Palins and their family, including that the trooper drank excessively, once shot a cow moose out of season and once used a Taser stun gun on his 10-year-old stepson. “He was like a ticking time bomb and I thought he was gonna blow,” Gov. Palin said in a May 2, 2005 interview with troopers.
When questioned, Mr. Wooten said he tested the Taser at the boy’s request, thought he was within his rights to kill the moose but never threatened the Palins. The troopers’ investigation substantiated the stun-gun incident and some other charges but threw out most of the rest. Mr. Wooten was suspended for five days in 2006, and the case was kept closed in his personnel files.
Not only should a cop be FIRED for Tasering a 10-yr old, but he should be thrown in Jail!
Let’s open up the file on fired Trooper Mike Wooten.
“The troopers’ investigation substantiated the stun-gun incident and some other charges but threw out most of the rest. Mr. Wooten was suspended for five days in 2006, and the case was kept closed in his personnel files.”
Sure looks like Gov Palin was standing up to the good ole boy network.

Yes, it derives from their pseudo-populism. See the above linked David Brooks editorial. That Brooks just keeps getting smarter. Maybe that happens when you hang around so many liberals.
You know how we hear all the time about everything should be decided at the lowest level of government possible? So, the state of Alaska was conducting their state’s business, an investigation was going on and everyone was cooperating and said they welcomed the investigation.
Of course, that was before the McCain camp got involved. Now, it seems, the state can’t continue doing the state’s business without interference.
Seems to me if Alaskans thought their was corruption in their states politics, they hadn’t seen anything until they witness the corruption the McCain camp brings in.
Really Linda? Tell me about the corruption in the McCain “camp”.
You have any links to that? Any trial results?
Can you point me at something factual?

An Open Letter to Christian Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
America is Now Rome
By STAN GOFF
On February 1, 1996, I retired from the United States Army. I had served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam as an infantryman, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 4th Infantry Division, 2nd Ranger Battalion, the Jungle Operations Training Center, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta, the United States Military Academy at West Point, 1st Ranger Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, 75th Ranger Regiment, and finally 3rd Special Forces Group. I worked all over “hot spots” in Latin America during the 80s and early 90s. I participated in Grenada and Somalia; and I was the team sergeant for a Special Forces A-Detachment during the 1994 invasion of Haiti.
In all that time, I was one of those atheists in the foxholes they say don’t exist. I could never have known that I’d find the faith to follow Christ and be baptized on Easter of my 56th year. But I did, even when I’d never grasped for spiritual reassurance as I slogged through the Central Highlands of Vietnam, leapt from airplanes into the night, or had helicopters shot out from under me. I’ve been taking up residence close to death for a long time. My faith isn’t about jumping over death. It’s about reconciling with God, who Jesus Christ showed us is Love.
When I was baptized I continued to carry my history; but one identity was sloughed off in the water and a new one born out of it. I write this open letter to troops, brothers and sisters — of all branches — who profess the faith of Christ. I write you to ask that you remember your baptism, because at that baptism you declared your renunciation of evil. *
The big preposition
Note the preposition. I didn’t say faith “in” Christ, I said faith “o”f Christ. Christian is a diminutive term; it means “little Christ.” To be a Christian is not to merely have faith in Christ. That’s too easy, and Jesus of Nazareth was not about easy. To be Christian is to aspire to have the faith of Christ. Christ’s call is not to go along with the program, say the magic words, then be rescued from death. Christ did not merely command belief. Christ commands you to follow him. That command does not wait until death for it to become effective in your life.
“Love your enemy.” This is not an etching at some altar that you visit; it is your path laid before you by the footsteps of Christ in this world. This is an action religion, not an abracadrabra religion.
Christ tells us to take up the cross. That means be willing to risk all, to suffer all when suffering can heal the brokenness in the world. The brokenness of 1st Century Palestine was not altogether different from the brokenness of the world now. Jesus’ ministry was conducted in the teeth of a Roman military occupation. Like Nuri al Malaki’s “government,” the Palestinian Jewish upper-class then lived in an uncomfortable collaboration with that occupation. There were also Jewish insurgents who fought the Roman occupation, who fought among themselves, and who attacked collaborating Jewish sects as well.
One particular nationalist party that emerged prior to the revolt with Rome was known as the Zealots. You may recall that Jesus had such folk among his small band of disciples. “And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot…” (Luke 6:13-15)
We can’t beat around the bush about this comparison. It’s clear.
We Romans
America is now Rome. You are Rome’s army of occupation. To the Roman soldier, when Jesus passed down the dusty byways of his occupied land, he appeared no more or less than a random Iraqi or Afghan appears to you. What do you look like to them?
Jesus himself looked at the Jewish resistance to Roman occupation, then looked at the corpses rotting on crosses along the roads as Roman examples to the Palestinian Jew, and he chose a new way. His way was neither passivity, nor counter-violence, but non-violent resistance, just like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, who both cited Jesus’ ministry in their own prophetic missions.
Jesus looked at the violence-counterviolence cycle, and determined that each person in that system was redeemable as an individual – each a child of God, each beloved of God. Jewish, Roman, Samaritan, male, female… no matter. He also looked at how the system itself — operating with a self-reinforcing dynamic that transcends the individual — led people into the cycles of accusation and violence; and he proposed to undermine that system with this radical doctrine of spiritual equality, a redemption open to all through grace, and a redemption never imposed at the point of a sword… or under threat of a bomb.
In the original story, written in Greek, Jesus says, “I am not of this world.” At least that’s how many interpretations go. But the original Greek word kosmos means world, flesh, or system, depending on context. “I am not of this system.” Not simply the system of Roman occupation, but the system of violence-counterviolence… all systems of domination, because domination breeds the cycle of violence-counterviolence.

Loving the enemy neutralizes the category of enemy.
Unfortunately, even with phalanxes of chaplains ready to distort and press the message of Christ into the business of war, this means that you are now part of an organization that has no reason to exist without an enemy. The ethic of the military is inscribed in the infantry phrase, “close with The Enemy and destroy him.” The ethic of Christ is inscribed in neighbor-love — love of anyone who is near, and enemy-love — the unmaking of the category of “enemy.” These two perspectives – military doctrine and the ethic of Christ — cannot be reconciled. “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors (enemies who exploited the people for the economic benefit of Rome) do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles (those who were not of the Jewish nation) do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matt 5:46-48) Christ told you to “love your enemies.” Break the cycle of enemy-making.
Yet the armed forces are based, at their very core, on the existence of an enemy to destroy. The very doctrine that governs your organization, your technology, and your methods, cannot exist without The Enemy. To accomplish that, the armed forces must do two things: they must devalue the lives of all who are not members of the nation, and they must set up an idol to supplant God.
The idolatry of nation
In your military chapels hang American flags. But God’s Creation does not stop at the border of the United States; and God’s love is not extended exclusively to Americans; just as God’s love was not extended exclusively to the Jews, but also embraced Samaritans and Gentiles and tax-collectors, and even the Roman soldiery who conducted the crucifixion of Jesus. And when we say we are blessed, we need to understand that blessing is not a reward of material goods or social power. To bless means to make whole… to heal brokenness. The root word in “salvation” is not save, but salve… a healing balm. If God is to bless America, then first and foremost, that means “heal” America — reconcile America to God. Not put the symbol of political authority in the chapel where it can pose as something holy. America cannot be blessed by God without that same blessing — that same making whole — extending to the entire human family, because under God, the human family is indivisible. As theologian Shane Claiborne notes:
No wonder it is hard for seekers to find God nowadays. It is difficult to know where Christianity ends and America begins. Our money says, ‘In God we Trust.’ God’s name is on American money, and America’s flag is on God’s altars.
The Hebraic tradition of Jesus forbids idolatry . . .
Dear CraponAmerica.
just the link would do.
so crapon…
“The ethic of the military is inscribed in the infantry phrase, “close with The Enemy and destroy him.” The ethic of Christ is inscribed in neighbor-love — love of anyone who is near, and enemy-love — the unmaking of the category of “enemy.” These two perspectives – military doctrine and the ethic of Christ — cannot be reconciled.”

McCain on Tuesday also put forth a proposal to set up a commission like the one that investigated the September 11 attacks to study what led to the current U.S. financial crisis and offer solutions.
Obama ridiculed the idea, saying it amounted to “passing the buck.”
“Here’s the thing — this isn’t 9/11. We know how we got into this mess,” Obama said.

That I’d agree with. Not too difficult to understand:
-100% loans given to anyone with a pulse.
This isn’t a Government issue. Banks are failing and will learn from their own mistakes.
-Worldwide demand for oil has raised prices on everything else.
We want a more prosperous world. Guess what? They’re gonna start buying cars.
After the GOP convention some one here made a statement that mccain blinked a lot and it indicated he was lying — some one refuted that saying no it was more likely a symptom of the dry air in the hall or something to that effect.
Carly Fiorina was being interviewed by Andrea Mitchell today and she blinked faster and more often than the emergency blinkers on my car — and she was tap dancing all around when asked about her 45 mil exit package from HP — in essence saying she deserved it because the board / shareholders voted to give it to her her to get rid of– HP stock dropped in value 60% under her astute leadership — how hypocritical of Mccain to have her as his economic adviser –
McCain – Bush only dumber and with less honor and integrity and you have to stretch to be that bad …..
Interesting information about the top ten high poverty cities.
What do the top ten cities with the highest poverty rate all have in
common?
Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn’t elected a Republican
mayor since 1961;
Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn’t elected one since 1954;
Cincinnati, OH (3rd)…since 1984;
Cleveland, OH (4th)…since 1989;
Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor;
St. Louis, MO (6th)….since 1949;

It is the disadvantaged who habitually elect Democrats — yet are
still disadvantaged.
“During one dispute in February 2005 which Sarah Palin said she overheard on a phone call with her sister, Mr. Wooten threatened that “your dad will eat an f—ing bullet if he gets you an attorney,”
Heresay. Even Palin’s father will not confirm the story.
I wonder if Sarah Palin will be indicted before the election?
Why did Christ allow Peter carry a sword?
Good question, since the only time Peter used it, he was rebuked for it and Jesus proceeded to heal the Roman soldier’s ear.
But no matter whether one can justify war or not (the “just” war theory), I’m pretty sure killing, maiming, terrorizing, and torturing for a pack of lies isn’t what Jesus would do WWJD.
I wonder if Sarah Palin will be indicted before the election?
Hard to say. The RepubliCONs are having a ship conniption over the bipartisan trooper-gate investigation.
Given their history of using the judicial system as just another lever of power, they should be able to delay and drown the probe.
But when you’ve got as many scandals as the Repukes have going, it’s hard to supress all the truth all the time.
Since you DimLibs probably don’t read Michael Reagan I thought I’d bless you with his thoughts.
Welcome Back, Dad
By Michael Reagan
I have been trying to convince my fellow conservatives that they have been wasting their time in a fruitless quest for a new Ronald Reagan to emerge and lead our party and our nation. I insisted that we would never see his like again because he was one of a kind.
I was wrong! Wednesday night I watched the Republican National Convention on television and there, before my very eyes, I saw my Dad reborn; only this time he’s a she.
And what a she!
In one blockbuster of a speech, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin resurrected my Dads indomitable spirit and sent it soaring above the convention center, shooting shock waves through the cynical medias assigned spaces and electrifying the huge audience with the kind of inspiring rhetoric we have not heard since my Dad left the scene.
This was Ronald Reagan at his best — the same Ronald Reagan who made the address known now solely as The Speech, which during the Goldwater campaign set the tone and the agenda for the rebirth of the traditional conservative movement that later sent him to the White House for eight years and revived the moribund GOP.
Last night was an extraordinary event. Widely seen before hands a make-or-break effort — either an opportunity for Sarah Palin to show that she was the happy warrior that John McCain assured us she was, or a disaster that would dash McCains presidential hopes and send her back to Alaska, sadder but wiser.
Obviously un-intimidated by either the savage onslaught to which the left-leaning media had subjected her, or the incredible challenge she faced — and oozing with confidence — she strode defiantly to the podium and proved she was everything and even more than John McCain told us.
Much has been made of the fact that she is a woman. What we saw last night, however, was something much more than a just a woman accomplishing something no Republican woman has ever achieved. What we saw was a red-blooded American with that rare, God-given ability to rally her dispirited fellow Republicans and take up the daunting task of leading them — and all her fellow Americans — on a pilgrimage to that shining city on the hill my father envisioned as our nations real destination.
In a few words she managed to rip the mask from the faces of her Democratic rivals and reveal them for what they are — a pair of old-fashioned liberals making promises that cannot be kept without bankrupting the nation and reducing most Americans to the status of mendicants begging for their daily bread at the feet of an all-powerful government.
Most important, by comparing her own stunning record of achievement with his, she showed Barack Obama for the sham that he is, a man without any solid accomplishments beyond conspicuous self-aggrandizement.
Like Ronald Reagan, Sarah Palin is one of us. She knows how most of us live because that is the way she lives. She shares our homespun values and our beliefs, and she glories in her status as a small-town woman who put her shoulder to the wheel and made life better for her neighbors.
Her astonishing rise up from the grass-roots, her total lack of self-importance, and her ordinary American values and modest lifestyle reveal her to be the kind of hard-working, optimistic, ordinary American who made this country the greatest, most powerful nation on the face of the earth.
As hard as you might try, you won’t find that kind of plain-spoken, down-to-earth, self-reliant American in the upper ranks of the liberal-infested, elitist Democratic Party, or in the Obama campaign.
Sarah Palin didn’t go to Harvard, or fiddle around in urban neighborhood leftist activism while engaging in opportunism within the ranks of one of the nations most corrupt political machines, never challenging it and going along to get along, like Barack Obama.
Instead she took on the corrupt establishment in Alaska and beat it, rising to the governorship while bringing reforms to every level of government she served in on her way up the ladder.
Welcome back, Dad, even if you are wearing a dress and bearing children this time around.

“Dear CraponAmerica.
just the link would do.
so crapon…”
Notice biased1, that “crapon” didn’t even bother to link or give credit to who he copied and pasted from?
Hum?
Yeah I always kinda knew Michael Reagan was something of a kook.
The adopted son, EVER trying to please his father. Or should I say Father?
Ronald Reagan was a rather simple minded fellow. At one time a union leader and Democrat.
Until Nancy wanted nice things. Then Ronald got himself reprogrammed.
Palin’s ALWAYS been a baddie.
With respect to some of the above posts;
There are repeated accounts of God supporting and strengthening HIS people in combat with their enemies. And abandoning them when they fell away from or turned their backs on him.
And while God allows the sun to shine and the rain to fall on all his creation, God does not show favor on all equally at all times and in all situations, as is biblical historical fact.
Ronald Reagan was a democrat when democrats still believed in national security and the necessity to fight for freedom.
He was never a ‘union leader’. Sorry.
Did god tell you this personally, or is this hearsay?
This is an honor to have someone on this blog who speaks for god…. wow! Tell her hi for me.
BlueJay the incompetent posts:
“The adopted son, EVER trying to please his father. Or should I say Father?”
BlueJay, you are adopted, as well as I, by the Father. Born into sin and adopted back into fellowship with the Father by a brotherhood with Christ.
Or did you forget that?
And “EVER trying to please his…Father” is very well accepted by the Father, and causes great anguish if one does not.
“Ronald Reagan was a democrat when democrats still believed in national security and the necessity to fight for freedom.”
That has exactly nothing to do with it.
Reagan wasn’t that deep. Or smart.
He DID have a way with words and Nancy got him talking to the “right” people. I wonder if she regrets that seeing where it has gone?
Yeah, maybe Palin is channeling Ronny. What B.S, !!! The markets need some shakin’ up and fixin’. Briliant!
More lipstick, FAST!!!!!
Blizzard Warning. Palin Halts Traffic.
STORM WARNING! The legal paperwork blizzard has arrived. Today we are expecting accumulations of 10-12? of legal stall tactics, creating hazardous conditions for those trying to navigate through the Palin scandal we have come to know as “Troopergate”. So, before proceeding, make sure you’ve got your studded tires on, and a good shovel. Ready?
Today, five Republican lawmakers filed a lawsuit against not only Democratic Sen. Hollis French, who is overseeing the investigation; not only Juneau Democratic Sen. Kim Elton, who heads the Legislative Council, and not only independent investigator Steve Branchflower, but the bipartisan Legislative Council itself. The suit seeks to delay the infamous ethics investigation until after the election on November 4, or to remove French and Elton.
“There is no nonpartisan reason to complete this investigation until after the election,” said Anchorage attorney Kevin G. Clarkson. “We just want to take the politics out of it and bring fairness back into it.”

Not if the Ones merry band of 30 lawyers shipped off to alaska have anything to say about it……
bahhhhhhh……
bahhhhhhhh…..
It’s late and I just found this, no time tonight to verify but quite frankly it sounds very sound.
I’ll let the DimLibs refute it. Ha. I love putting them to work, which for many is a misnomer.
“Too bad we don’t have folks on Capitol Hill willing to speak out like this. J.D. Pendry is a retired Marine Sergeant Major who writes for Random House. He is eloquent, and he seldom beats around the bush!
‘The Axis of Idiots’
Jimmy Carter, you are the father of the Islamic Nazi movement. You threw the Shah under the bus, welcomed the Ayatollah home, and then lacked the spine to confront the terrorists when they took our embassy and our people hostage. You’re the runner-in-chief.
Bill Clinton, you played ring around the Lewinsky while the terrorists were at war with us. You got us into a fight with them in Somalia and then you ran from it. Your weak-willed responses to the U.S.S. Cole and the first Trade Center bombing and our embassy bombings emboldened the killers. Each time you failed to respond adequately, they grew bolder, until 9/11/2001.
John Kerry, dishonesty is your most prominent attribute. You lied about American Soldiers in Vietnam. Your military service, like your life, is more fiction than fact. You’ve accused our military of terrorizing women and children in Iraq. You called Iraq the wrong war, wrong place, wrong time, the same words you used to describe Vietnam. You’re a fake. You want to run from Iraq and abandon the Iraqis to murderers just as you did the Vietnamese. Iraq, like Vietnam, is another war that you were for, before you were against it.
John Murtha, you said our military was broken. You said we can’t win militarily in Iraq. You accused United States Marines of cold-blooded murder without proof and said we should redeploy to Okinawa. Okinawa, John? And the Democrats call you their military expert! Are you sure you didn’t suffer a traumatic brain injury while you were off building your war hero resume? You’re a sad, pitiable, corrupt and washed up politician. You’re not a Marine, sir. You wouldn’t amount to a good pimple on a real Marine’s ass. You’re a phony and a disgrace. Run away, John.
Dick Durbin, you accused our Soldiers at Guantanamo of being Nazis, tenders of Soviet style gulags and as bad as the regime of Pol Pot, who murdered two million of his own people after your party abandoned Southeast Asia to the Communists. Now you want to abandon the Iraqis to the same fate. History was not a good teacher for you, was it? Lord help us! See Dick run.
Ted Kennedy, for days on end you held poster-sized pictures from Abu Ghraib in front of any available television camera. Al Jazeera quoted you saying that Iraqi’s torture chambers were open under new management. Did you see the news, Teddy? The Islamic Nazis demonstrated another beheading for you. If you truly supported our troops, you’d show the world poster-sized pictures of that atrocity and demand the annihilation of it. Your legislation stripping support from the South Vietnamese led to a communist victory there. You’re a bloated, drunken fool bent on repeating the same historical blunder that turned freedom-seeking people over to homicidal, genocidal maniacs. To paraphrase John Murtha, all while sitting on your wide, gin-soaked rear-end in Washington .
Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Carl Levine, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Russ Feingold, Hillary Clinton, Pat Leahy, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, the Hollywood Leftist morons, et al, ad nauseam: Every time you stand in front of television cameras and broadcast to the Islamic Nazis that we went to war because our President lied, that the war is wrong and our Soldiers are torturers, that we should leave Iraq, you give the Islamic butchers – the same ones that tortured and mutilated American Soldiers – cause to think that we’ll run away again, and all they have to do is hang on a little longer. It is inevitable that we, the infidels, will have to defeat the Islamic jihadists. Better to do it now on their turf, than later on ours after they have gained both strength and momentum.
American news media, the New York Times particularly: Each time you publish stories about national defense secrets and our intelligence gathering methods, you become one united with the sub-human pieces of camel dung that torture and mutilate the bodies of American Soldiers. You can’t strike up the courage to publish cartoons, but you can help Al Qaeda destroy my country. Actually, you are more dangerous to us than Al Qaeda is. Think about that each time you face Mecca to admire your Pulitzer..
You are America’s ‘AXIS OF IDIOTS.’ Your collective stupidity will destroy us. Self-serving politics and terrorist-abetting news scoops are more important to you than our national security or the lives of innocent civilians and Soldiers. It bothers you that defending ourselves gets in the way of your elitist sport of politics and your ignorant editorializing. There is as much blood on your hands as is on the hands of murdering terrorists. Don’t ever doubt that. Your frolics will only serve to extend this war as they extended Vietnam. If you want our Soldiers home as you claim, knock off the crap and try supporting your country ahead of supporting your silly political aims and aiding our enemies.
Yes, I’m questioning your patriotism. Your loyalty ends with self. I’m also questioning why you’re stealing air that decent Americans could be breathing. You don’t deserve the protection of our men and women in uniform. You need to run away from this war, this country. Leave the war to the people who have the will to see it through and the country to people who are willing to defend it.
No, Mr. President, you don’t get off the hook, either. Our country has two enemies: Those who want to destroy us from the outside and those who attempt it from within. Your Soldiers are dealing with the outside force. It’s your obligation to support them by confronting the AXIS OF IDIOTS.
Semper Fi,
J. D. Pendry – Sergeant Major, USMC, Retired
“There is no nonpartisan reason to complete this investigation until after the election,” said Anchorage attorney Kevin G. Clarkson.
There is no nonpartisan reason to not complete this investigation, that was started long before mccain didn’t vet palin.
Also, 8 repubs. and 4 dems. voted to investigate, so that pretty much removes partisan from the equation, at least until mcbush pulled her out of the snow to be his running mate.
I say let Alaskans take care of their own business on their own timetable.
I heard from folks who have reviewed email correspondence; that Walt Monegan was clearly insubordinate and deserved to have his a$$ fired just for that. I predict that’s the way it will come out. There is no reason to have the American election influenced by a petty political ploy.
“There is no reason to have the American election influenced by a petty political ploy.”
outlander
But outlander, that’s all they’ve got, they are going to ride this dead pony until it stinks.
And they aren’t smart enough to know it will bite them in the a$$, as you put it.
Insubordination is the American way or do you not know that Outlander?
Palin was and is incompetent. SHE fired people who would not be loyal to her.
She TRIED to fire a librarian because she said she would not remove books from the library.
We live in a representative democracy. We do not appoint our leaders to be dictators.
Sarah Palin was elected Governor.
Not appointed as Queen.
Now I know outlander that you and boxlock and such folk as you go forward in life on your knees. You NEVER question authority. YOU answer to an authority not found on this Earth.
Well? I live here. And if Sarah Palin abused her office for personal reasons, I think we need to know it.
Palin, the Ice Queen!
“I heard from folks who have reviewed email correspondence”
And yet you provide no link? Only your say so?
The investigation of Sarah Palin abusing her office is a bipartisan one.
Sarah was for it. Now she is against it.
Like she was for that bridge to nowhere before she was against it?
Oh MY!
A Hannity slip. And a telling one.
Sean Hannity referred to Sarah Palin as the first woman running for President of the United States.
OOps!
Hey Boxlock,
If you’d be interested in doing lunch sometime, email me at WilhelmWundt54@gmail.com . My treat. I do get to say where, though. Sorry, but we won’t be having any Palin moose burgers.
I wonder if those Repub. operatives will have any standing to try and sue to stop anything?
“No, I’m saying instead of bashing, fabricating, digging up non-stories on a VP candidate, you MIGHT want to look at YOUR PRESIDENTIAL candidate just a litte bit closer.

With the exception of the misstatement of 57 states,
ALL of the above statements of Biased1, are absolute, TOTAL LIES… with malice aforethought, eve…..
SHAMEFUL LIAR!!!
Got you lipstick handy Biased1?? Looks like you need it, so folks wont notice that you are STILL a Lying, Friggin PIG!!!
PIG!! PIG!! PIG!!!
As it turns out I’m involved with a business project with an outfit in Delhi India. (They outsourced to me! Maybe I’m not charging enough!)
So I’m up at 2 am after a cyber-meeting.
And I run across this on the Eagle’s front page”
Kansas had one of the sharpest increases in violent crime last year, thanks in part to a 2 percent jump in violent crime in Wichita, new FBI statistics show.
Statewide, the number of violent crimes rose 7 percent in 2007….”
So much for how concealed carry laws would reduce crime.
Seems like the Law of Unintended Results might have kicked in. If I were your run-of-the-mill crook in Kansas, and got in the mindset that anyone I might want to rob, rape, or burglarize might be carrying a firearm, I might decide to show up at a gun show and get a piece of my own.
It’s about a culture of violence that gun fetishists have created.
Monkeybehind,
That’s all the more reason to obtain a CCW permit.
The crime is not do to CCW, the crime is not committed by CCW holders.
The crime is committed by crooks and violent people.
The crime is undoubtedly a result of increased unemployment stress and drugs.
If more people had concealed carry licenses it would be more effective in reducing crime.
Unfortunately Kansas has a rather low percentage with CCW and those folks are smart enough to stay out of risky situations and lifestyles so the don’t come into contact as frequently with crooks as the general population.
Give one link that attributes increased crime to CCW.
The Monkey continues to show the most bizarre leaps of logic.
Undoubtedly because there is no logic involved in his postings.
hello everyone, I am Cathrine. I’m new here and I just wanted to say hello to everyone, I’ve actually been reading a lot of posts on this forum for a while but this is my first post here :)
