Ethical free-for-all at Interior Department

Per a New York Times article: “As Congress prepares to debate expansion of drilling in taxpayer-owned coastal waters, the Interior Department agency that collects oil and gas royalties has been caught up in a wide-ranging ethics scandal — including allegations of financial self-dealing, accepting gifts from energy companies, cocaine use and sexual misconduct. . . . The reports portray a dysfunctional organization that has been riddled with conflicts of interest, unprofessional behavior and a free-for-all atmosphere for much of the Bush administration’s watch.”

Well, the Dept. of the Interior was placed in charge of drilling, and now they’ve been caught literally in bed with the oil industry doing just that. So, what did you expect?

Repubs. aren’t going to like this, no oil subsidies,
tax increase, no revenue sharing for the coastal states (bribe), and tax inc. for the oil companies.
    They’ll block it.
“”So we’re saying: OK, you want to drill, this is how it will be. No more subsidies,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters Thursday.

Republicans, who have been pushing to lift the moratorium on drilling, criticized the proposal because it does not provide a revenue-sharing plan to coastal states as an incentive to allow drilling.

Separately, Senators Max Baucus and Chuck Grassley on Thursday unveiled energy tax legislation that would extend solar and wind energy tax credits and provide $2.5 billion in credits to clean coal facilities.

Baucus, a Democrat from Montana, and Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said the bill would provide consumers with a tax credit of up to $7,500 for plug-in electric vehicles and also would extend credits for extend energy efficiency.

The tax bill would be funded partially by reducing tax breaks for the five largest oil and gas companies.

“This bill has the right tax policy to create thousands of jobs, jump-start alternative energy solutions and finally move America away from our dependence on foreign oil,” Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said in a statement.

    News flash

“In three reports delivered to Congress on Wednesday, the department’s inspector general, Earl E. Devaney, found wrongdoing by a dozen current and former employees of the Minerals Management Service, which collects about $10 billion in royalties annually and is one of the government’s largest sources of revenue other than taxes.”

    News flash.

The Interior department it self caught these corrupt activities and is getting this straightened out.

It is clear to the common person the Administration and the top management do not allow this and never did. It looks like they will do some environmental cleanup as needed.

Why were the reports delivered to Congress?

It couldn’t be because that’s who ordered the investigation or anything, could it?

BushCo. has a consistent history of putting industry insiders in charge of the regulatory agencies that are supposed to police them.

Why? He hates government and wants to destroy it.

Keep trying. The national debt was 1.5 TRILLION dollars higher after Clinton left office.

“BTW, that offshore oil is my oil along with 350 million other Americans.”

YOu will get your share just as soon as they pump it out and you pay for it at the gas station. “Your share” goes into the general fund in the form of taxes on the companies pulling it out and royalties.

  51. American_Way
    Posted September 11, 2008 at 7:45 pm | Permalink

Oh I certainly do know the difference. But of course, did Billy take that surplus and pay down the debt with it? Nope. It was squandered away.
Had he at least paid down the debt with his tiny surplus,

HE WOULD ONLY HAVE INCREASED OUR NATIONAL DEBT 1.3 TRILLION (count them) DOLLARS.

    Try again.

  52. Posted September 11, 2008 at 7:46 pm | Permalink

Looks like McCain likes hanging out with the criminals:

    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Photo_catches_McCain_meeting_with_indicted_0911.html

McCain was seen celebrating his 70th B-day with a notorious Italian con man. Nice to know where McCain gets his advice on ripping off the American taxpayer, but I don’t think McCain needed any additional help.

  53. Posted September 11, 2008 at 7:47 pm | Permalink

    Amway confuses reality:
“Oh I certainly do know the difference. But of course, did Billy take that surplus and pay down the debt with it? Nope. It was squandered away.
Had he at least paid down the debt with his tiny surplus,”

Running a surplus will reduce the debt because interest payments and loans will be paid off as usual. Since no additional debt is accumulating the debt will go down. It might help to have a better understanding of the economy than McCain if you want to discuss the issue.

  54. American_Way
    Posted September 11, 2008 at 7:49 pm | Permalink

    It’s real simple folks.

Let me make it as simple as possible, but no simpler for you (e.g. Maggot/Capn).

Let’s say you get a bonus check. Or maybe a tax rebate. Say it’s for $600.

And you owe $1000 on your personal credit card.

You have a choice. You can pay down your credit card debt, which will result in a lower daily balance and less interest accumulating.

Or, you can blow the $600 on something else.

In Clinton’s case, left his credit card debt alone and let it grow, and grow, and grow.

  55. American_Way
    Posted September 11, 2008 at 7:50 pm | Permalink

Rememeber, a Lockbox is a figure of someone’s imagination.

  56. Posted September 11, 2008 at 7:55 pm | Permalink

Amway let me educate you on government bonds, which make up the national debt. Bonds, savings bonds, t-bills, whatever, are bought and mature at a set time, like 25 years or a year or whenever. Unlike credit card debt they eventually mature.

Making the comparison between government bonds and a credit card bill shows your lack of understanding. If a saving bond mature the government pays it off with the interest accumulated during a set period. The government has to pay it off and has never missed a payment.

So when the budget has a surplus it is still paying off the debts, and it is paying off the debts when it runs a deficit.

It might help to know what you are talking about one of these days.

  57. Phantom

Clinton wanted to start paying down the debt, but there were more projected surpluses (remember bush’s far as the eye can see, and of course he gave it back and more to the wealthy) so it wasn’t a big issue on where to put it.

AmWay – as you are aware it took several years for Clinton to develop enough of an operating surplus to cover the interest on the GOP debt he inherited. During that time the interest did accrue to the debt and the debt increased. That was solely due to the runaway deficit spending of the GOP.
