Debate is back on

John McCain will be at tonight’s presidential debate after all. After wanting it postponed and saying that he wouldn’t attend unless the financial bailout plan was worked out, McCain’s campaign announced today that he would be attending. His campaign cited “significant progress” in the bailout negotiations, even though Thursday’s White House summit broke down after House Republicans revolted. McCain “had intended to ride back into Washington on Thursday as a leader who had put aside presidential politics to help broker a solution to the financial crisis,” a New York Times news analysis observed. “Instead he found himself in the midst of a remarkable partisan showdown, lacking a clear public message for how to bring it to an end.”

But what Nathaniel fails to mention is that McCain’s campaign asked to postpone the debate until the date of the VP debate. Wonder why? They still cannot let Sarah Palin out by herself.

David Letterman had a valid point too. When McCain cancelled, why didn’t he send Sarah Palin to cover for him? Palin was in New York meeting all those foreign leaders.

House GOP Aides: McCain ‘Not Familiar With The Details’ Of The Financial Bailout
    http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/26/bailout-plan-details/
“At the bipartisan White House meeting that McCain “didn’t speak until 43 minutes into the meeting.” He “sat silently for more than 40 minutes, more observer than leader, and then offered only a vague sense of where he stood, said people in the meeting.”

Sen. Chris Dodd said, “Instead of being a rescue plan for our economy it was a rescue plan for John McCain.” Sen. Chuck Schumer urged Bush to “respectfully tell Sen. McCain to get out of town. He’s not helping.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid added, “We had [Republican] Senator [Bob] Bennett, a high ranking official, who said these are the principles. And then, guess who came to town? And it all fell apart.”

McCain’s handling of the negotiations serves to underscore his comment in Dec. 2007 that he is “not an expert on Wall Street” and “not an expert of some of this stuff”:

No, Linda won’t yell at me. :)

So… More from the article linked above from cosmos and huffingtonpost. And this guy is one of yours…or was.

On Friday, it announced that the Senator would head down to Mississippi even though, as they readily admit, much work remained needed on the bailout agreement.

The whole episode left even conservatives admitting that the McCain campaign looked erratic and a bit foolish with no apparent direction or guiding principle.

“It just proves his campaign is governed by tactics and not ideology,” said Republican consultant Craig Shirley, who advised McCain earlier in this cycle. “In the end, he blinked and Obama did not. The ’steady hand in a storm’ argument looks now to more favor Obama, not McCain.”

Shirley added, “My guess is that plasma units are rushing to the McCain campaign as we speak to replace the blood flowing there from the fights among the staff.”

I hope they have pain medication at the ready for John. Having your own party members admitting your campaign looked erratic and a bit foolish with no apparent direction or guiding principle must hurt like hell.

JMWalker- Have you read that new best seller?

    I refer you to :
“HOW I LEARNED TO PUT LIPSTICK ON THE RIGHT END OF THE PIG, Or My Life in Politics” by Sarah Palin.

    It can explain your concerns.
    ======================================================
Actually, I have read it, and as soon as I get my moose hunting license, I’m going to hunt one down and try her moose pie recipe. It’s on page twenty seven, and, yes, I do plan on coloring the pictures with the complimentary crayons you get free with each book. It should help pass the time during the Biden/Palin debate.

biased1 – not that you care but you might want to check the facts about McCain’s decision to rush down to Washington. McCain called Letterman on Wednesday to cancel his appearance that day. Letterman caught McCain on videotape getting his make up on to talk to Katie Couric and then Letterman said on Thursday night that McCain did not even leave New York until Thursday.

But you are forgetting one thing – Obama did reach out to McCain on Wednesday morning to propose putting out a joint statement about the Wall Street mess and like a true Republican – McCain bit Obama’s hand and went on television 10 minutes later and stated he was suspending his campaign and rushing back to Washington to rescue the bailout plan.

But let’s not let the true facts get in the way of the fairy tale you are spinning here today.

Austrian – you may be right but what choice do we have? The politicians are going to do what they are going to do. If we can at least get some accountability from the deal, then let’s attempt to correct the situation and go on from here.

    2 things.

One, fairly? For a candidate who’s runnin’ on bein’ and gettin’ a lot of credit on bein’ a leader, he was downright mute. Glad to see that his parachutin’ in gave the House Republicans some backbone…although I don’t think he likes THAT kinda backbone much.

Hmmm…wonder where Sarah Palin sorts out on this issue? God, what I’d give to be a fly on THAT wall. “Bale (sic) out, you what think Congressman McCain (sic)? YOU COMMIE WITCH LOVIN’ HEATHEN!”

Two, problem? For the first time in years, YEARS, I find myself in the House Republicans’ corner. No offense meant, SVB (because you know I love ya) Ron Paul’s economic “message” is goofball to the point that it drowns out all that remains of his emminently fine common sense. (a gold standard?!?)

If this bill passes, the GOP is kaput. Period. Finis. Over. We’ll read about them in wiki as “a political party that was active in American politics from 1854 until 2008…” Or maybe they’ll limp along until 2010, but it’s doubtful.

And ain’t no way McCain wins, either. In fact, the GOP will dust up and float away like the mummy in The Mummy. It’s that bad for that venerable old party right now.

These House guys may not only save America as we think of it, they may also save the GOP.

    SolDevVB,

And thank you for proving that you can’t understand that the topic is McCain, and what he has said and done (or more accurately, not done). The current topic is not the bailout bill, or the House conservatives.

Cosmos what we saw was a junior senator get his hat handed to him by a better man. This was apparent with the little mini news conference he did last night.

I have never been McCains biggest fan but he showed his metal today. Strong on the economy. Strong on protecting the tax payers – even the whiney libs. Always has been strong on national defense. Always said the surge would work and Obama came late to that party. The list goes on.

Just heard Obama and McCain speak. McCain is so much more presidental.

Obama knew the ACORN fix was in and now has egg on his face because even the dims wouldn’t pass this on their own.

In comes McCain and said ‘no we will not do this do the taxpayers’. If Wall Street wants a bailout they will pay for it not the taxpayers. Thank you John McCain you have my vote and my confidence. Thank you John Boehner for not allowing the dims to force this horrible package through.

The libs looked like the idiots they are and I am laughing at the idiots on this blog that don’t have a clue that their bony behinds were saved by the man who will be our next prez.

    Looking forward to the debates.

Agreed on the bailout bill, granny.

However, you’ve got it wrong on the second part. McCain has allowed Steve Schmidt and his own cynicism/recklessness to clearly reveal his unfortunately unpredictable impulsiveness as overwhemlingly powerful evidence that he’s unfit to lead as POTUS — crucially, fatally, it’s unpredictable this recklessness of his, just as George Will and now Kathleeen Parker have noted:

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

If you’re still keeping track, that’s a National Review website.

Turn out the lights, for thinking Americans the McCain party is over. The debate’s on/not on/on decision plus Palin have sealed his fate.

    And I do mean over.

My deceased grandmother who was a die-hard Republican used to say that Richard Nixon had a wonderful smile. I was pretty young then, but I distinctly recall thinking that her characterization of Nixon’s obviously fake smile was insane.

I think it’s possible that grm might say the same thing about Nixon’s smile. Grm’s obviously blind partison slant makes it difficulf for her to perceive reality.

I don’t think Obama is as good a debater as he is an orator. But I believe that Obama’s skills will be sufficient to embarrass McCain.

I wonder if Palin will be able to speak even remotely coherently (see Couric interview) during he debate with Biden. There rumors flying that the McCain camp is considering dumping Palin. I don’t think they are smart enough to do that, plus the Palin trainwreck is the only interesting thing going on with the GOP effort.

Palin stays in = McCain is an incredibly cynic capable of picking a female version of Barney Fife as VPOTUS, pulls a McGovern and loses every state but possibly Arizona (50).

okie-dokie – you’re certainly spinning a mighty pretty fairy tale today. Too bad you’re facts are all wrong though.

McCain did absolutely nothing but sit there and smirk that evil grin he has. His handlers really do need to tell him to stop that.

Looking presidential? I don’t think so. He looked like a deer in the headlights that had no clue as to what was going on. McCain admitted that he does not know anything about the economy and now he is the expert?

If it was not for the Democrats in the first place wanting major changes to Bush’s (YOUR leader) plan, I’m sure the Republicans would have gone through with it like the good little lockstep soldiers they are.

But when Democrats started asking questions about accountability, then the revolting Republicans decided they had better take the same position as fighting for the taxpayers (yeah right – if the Republicans would have been on side of taxpayers, we would not be IN this mess in the first place).

Let’s face it okie-dokie – your side got caught and now they are trying to weasel out of it and make the other side look bad.

We’ll see what the American voters think about McCain and his little stunt this week.

My bet is on the David Letterman crowd that is still wondering why John McCain lied to Letterman about having to rush down to Washington on Wednesday to save the country when McCain was still in New York the next day at Bill Clinton’s conference.

Once a liar, always a liar?

The only flaw Carter had was he was too honest for the job. Republicans know how to fight dirty and then say ‘God bless’ after every sentence! God knows the evil in their hearts though.

mom — remember when Carter stayed in the Rose Garden during the Iran Hostage Crisis, and didnt campaign too much, because he wanted to stay close to the news of the hostages??

And do you remember how the Republicans (forerunners of the NEOCONS) blasted him for being a pansy, and a wuss for not getting into the fight??

NOW, this week, when McCain tried to weasel out of the debate tonite, and the Liberals saied McCain was being a wusss…. NOW the Republican NEOCONS SUPPORTED that decision… My my, how things do turn around!!

And MY favorite… The Republicans… the staunch ANTI-COMMUNISTS (better dead than red folks) are now considered to be the RED STATES!!!

Carter was clueless. History showed us that.

And Mom three branches of government. The legislature writes laws. The dims are in control of the house. Of the senate. Why don’t they write a bill and run it by the prez. They can do that without a republican vote. Why don’t they?

Because, bless their antiquated souls, they believe in government and its power.

In other words, they want Boehner and the GOP to sign willingly on the dotted line for such a collossal, and I do mean COLLOSSAL, mistake.

okie-dokie – if McCain is the real leader to clean up Wall Street – does this mean he is going to fire his campaign advisers that took money from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to fight the federal regulations? Is he going to tell the former CEO of Hewlett Packer that got fired from her cushy job with a golden parachute of multi-millions to get out of his campaign? Both of these types of people are the reasons why Wall Street is in trouble today.

When McCain does that – then come back to me and we’ll talk about McCain being a leader – okay?

And why should the Democrats rewrite a bill when one is already written that can be passed if only both sides agree to some accountability and oversight?

Democrats only have a simple majority and any bill of their own would be vetoed by King George. You know that silly okie-dokie.

You can laugh at the Letterman crowd but alot of people listen to him and even more tuned in this week to see what all the hoopla was about.

McCain is not that popular with the average Americans. After all, we don’t make $5 million a year like those McCain middle class people in McCain’s world do.

Chas – yes I do remember Jimmy Carter and I also remember how Ronald Reagan gave weapons to Iran in the Iran-Contra affair. Reagan really started something, didn’t he?

But the Republicans all worship that man. Carter may not have been the strongest president we had but there was none that loved his country and every American citizen more than Carter

Too bad Ronald Reagan sold us out to Iran for the 30 pieces of silver.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a McCain supporter, said Friday his candidate made a “huge mistake” by proposing a halt to the debate in the first place.

“You can’t just say, ‘World, stop for a moment. I’m going to cancel everything’,” Huckabee told the Associated Press.

If anything, McCain’s actions reinforced the perception – which firmly took hold with his last-minute selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate – that he prefers making decisions more out of gut instinct than cautious deliberation.

For McCain, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With the U.S. economy in the tank and Palin’s political star dimming, McCain’s poll numbers were slipping ahead of his actions this week. The latest Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll shows Obama with 50 per cent support to McCain’s 45 per cent.

In economically troubled Michigan – a key election battleground – one poll shows Obama up 13 points.

McCain may well have decided he needed another game-changing event to shake up the presidential campaign. It worked, but possibly not to his advantage.

Oh stop the world and let me off
I’m tired of goin’ round n’ round
I played the game of love and lost
So stop the world and let me off

My heart is shattered can’t you see
‘Cause you no longer care for me
But someday I’m sure you’ll see
Loving you did this to me

My dream world tumbled to the ground
The one I love has let me down
I lost the wonder of his kiss
How could he leave me here like this

    (Repeat chorus)

Stop all this burning up inside
I know his love for me has died
I lost the wonder of his kiss
How could he leave me here like this

    (Repeat chorus)

Analysis: Even before debate, styles on view

WASHINGTON — The most important revelation surrounding the first presidential debate may have come before it began — in John McCain’s decision to briefly suspend his campaign to work on the financial bailout, and Barack Obama’s insistence that the debate go ahead despite the lack of an agreement on a bailout plan.

The candidates were giving voters something that rarely emerges from a debate or even a campaign: Direct insight into their approaches to governing.
