Corsi is the guy who co-wrote “Unfit for Command,” which smeared John Kerry’s war record and gave us the term “Swift-boating.” He also has smeared the Catholic Church and wrote a book claiming that President Bush was part of a secret conspiracy to create a one-worldlike North American Union.
So how could a book by this guy debut at No. 1 on the New York Times’ best-seller list? It’s partly because people like books that reinforce their fears and biases. But the main reason is that conservative book distributors and groups buy the book in bulk in order to place it on the best-seller list, which appears to legitimize the book and enables right-wing commentators to treat it seriously.

Jerome Corsi’s anti-Obama book, “The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality,” claims the Illinois senator is a dangerous, radical candidate for president. The book is a compilation of all the innuendo and false rumors against Obama — that he was raised a Muslim, attended a radical, black church and secretly has a “black rage” hidden beneath the surface.
In fact, Obama is a Christian who attended Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
The Obama campaign picked apart the book’s claims in a rebuttal titled “Unfit For Publication,” to be posted on the Obama campaign’s rumor-fighting Web site, FightTheSmears.com. The title is a play on the book Corsi co-authored against 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry’s military service called “Unfit For Command.”
“Jerome Corsi is a discredited liar who is peddling another piece of garbage to continue the Bush-Cheney politics he helped perpetuate four years ago,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor. “His is just one of what will likely be many more lie-filled books rushed to print this election cycle, which are cobbled together from debunked Internet sources to make money and advance a partisan agenda. We will respond to these smears forcefully with all means at our disposal.”

Half truths are the problem that are being perpetrated against Obama. I heard it reported on NPR today that 12% of Democrats and 12% of Republicans think Obama is a Muslim.
Obama went to a Muslim school. His stepfather at the time was a Muslim, his religion was recorded at the school he was attending as being Muslim, though he never practiced that religion.
Obama did get his opponents disqualified from appearing on the ballot in his first Illinois state election. He did not do this with some lawyerly trickery as Paul F. Rosell falsely implies. Rather, his opponents illegally tried to appear on the ticket, Obama protected himself by calling his opponents on their wrong-doing.
People like Paul believe that the entire population of the U.S. is like him and have an attention span of 2 seconds – and that he can make sound bite statements that reinforce peoples’ biases and that this is “truth”. Only in PaulFRosellLand…
Another advantage to the approach of PFR is that he produces so many half-truth/lies that it becomes wearisome to refute them all. My advice: consider anything written by Rosell as being untrue, distorted, half-truth at best and most likely dishonest.
Some footnotes will direct the reader to rw blogs, where the author read it!
Kind of like the references we often see here, ie Franklins referening an anonymous email for substantiation.
The author will still get his time on FOX, and the cable channels will repeat the lies, now that they have a source, becoming themselves a second source for the baseless allegations.
Let’s face it, the majority of voters are not going to read Corsi’s book. But it has the effect of repeating rumors and inuendo so most voters are going to hear about this book. There comes a point where people will go, “Geez, I have heard this stuff before, so maybe where there is smoke, there is fire.”
The people who perpetrate such lies know about the above process and it is their intent to foment that type of misinformation.
I saw a McCain ad on the Olympics last night. He was flat stating “things are much worse then they were four years ago” – the camera panned some gasoline pumps. The unmistakeable conclusion that I drew is that McCain has to campaign against Bush, too.
McCain has to campaign agaist Bush, and has to wage a rumor/elitist/exotic/unamerican type campagin against Obama. I wonder if that will work. On it’s face, it looks flat ridiculous.

Again, I would think more of Obama if he had told the truth about his father.
