Obama’s age problem

“With polls showing Obama dominating among those under 40 and running even among middle-aged voters, Republican John McCain’s lead among those 65 and older is the main reason he remains close overall,” the Washington Post reported. “His margin is largest among older white voters without a college education, accounting for much of Obama’s problem with the white working class.”
Why isn’t Barack Obama doing better with older voters?
“Surveys and interviews suggest that older voters think McCain, who will turn 72 this month, comes far closer than Obama, 47, to sharing their values and outlook on the world and on the changes in the nation over the past half-century.”

Obama just came out with a STUPID give away program for those over 65.

Just a hint, folks, we can not afford the programs we ALREADY have!

The boomers are hitting retirement age. We can not pile on ANY more benefits right now.

For Medicare, alone, the Federal subsidy is, roughly, $760.00 per month, on average, for those over 65.

That does not count Medicaid, for the truly poor.

That does not count Veterans benefits.

That does not count Social Security payments.

    Yes, they EARNED those benefits.

Our obligation, NOW, is to see to it that we can afford to PAY those benefits.

Adding more benefits, of any type, will threaten what is already on the books.

Racism. Lets just say it. These are the end of the generation who were very racist. That was just how it was and they make no apologies for it.

I work with the elderly every day, and I know full well this is HUGE with them.

I’m stating a fact. No not all elderly are racist, some are surprisingly liberal. But the elderly are far more likely to have very serious issues with Obama because of race AND perceived religion.

They also don’t consider themselves to be racist- even if they will not vote for someone because of it. They find it completely appropriate to treat a caregiver poorly if they are black. I’ve seen it time and time again. They will talk about their color repeatedly, as if it is NORMAL behavior.

And the bullets and bombs stopped…

I just spoke of eliminating income tax for the old…
and added 10 billion to the deficit…

    Now there are the masses…

    begging for change…

    Just like I promised…

    I truley AM the ONE.

There is more than one way to get the senior vote:

“WASHINGTON (AP) – If you’re a senior citizen and earn less than $50,000 a year, Barack Obama has a deal for you: a life free of federal income tax.”

The negotiation, where RX drugs are concerned, takes place between the insurance companies and the drug manufacturers.
You do NOT know what you are talking about.

Also, out of the $760 average subsidy, per medicare beneficiary, roughly $80 of that is devoted to prescription drug coverage — IN WHICH PRICES HAVE ALREADY BEEN NEGOTIATED by market forces.

    Try again.

“Shares their values” equals “is not black.”

But of course, the fact that the McCain campaign wants you to know that white women “really like Barack Obama!” isn’t racist.

  24. Posted August 12, 2008 at 6:18 pm | Permalink

The old people I know are wanting to vote for Obama. They believe that the republicans are going to take away their medicare. It is because they are confused about the universal health care and their medicare. Just listen to C-Span in the morning on Washington Journal. There are so many old people calling in that are for him. They even call on the republican line saying that they have been a republican all their lives but they are going to vote for Obama.

Also, my stepdad who is a life long democrat is voting for Obama. I couldn’t believe it. At first, I thought that he would have a problem because of his race, but he didn’t. He believes that old saying that the democrat party is for the working man. He is 78 years old. When Edwards didn’t get chosen, I was shocked when he went for Hillary. He always argued with Mom and I about women’s rights. It just goes to show you that when one has been a democrat all their life, they can overcome any of their prejudices. I still think it is more an issue of democrat vs. republican than it is a racist issue.

Pmomma’s logical applied to the black vote:

Racism. Lets just say it. These are the black Americans who have lived under the very racist. That is how it is and they make no apologies for it.

  27. American_Way

People are more comfortable among their own. That does not make them racists. Old people associate with old people. Young, with the young. Blacks live in communities largely black. Whites live in communities largely white. Hispanic’s, you get the picture.

This is not a form of racism. Look at home many cities have “little Italy” “Germantown”. Even gays flock to gay communities: San Francisco, Lakewood, Ohio, etc…

Children in school will be seen huddling in groups of kids like themselves – at all ages.

It is great when we all come together despite our ethnic background, our religious beliefs, or sexual preference. But when we go home at night, many still go to communities dominated with people like ourselves.

Naturally, seniors will find common ground with the old wrinkly fart.

No, it won’t. The AARP has very clear public agendas, and does send questionnaires to candidates, but like other non-profits, it does not endorse candidates.

    NO INCOME TAX FOR SENIORS

An AARP bulletin on the presidential candidates’ tax plans barely mentions it, saying that Obama’s proposal could partly offset additional taxes that Obama would impose on seniors through higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains.
    - Associated Press Online

Can’t wait to see what happens as more babyboomers join AARP. 77 million (1 in 5 American) of us telling Congress: We didn’t pay income taxes but we RATE a stimulous check!

We will be the largest voting block and special interest group a congress has ever seen.
