“If we’re going to get serious about putting our nation’s fiscal house in order, let’s talk about putting an end to billions in no-bid contract awards to unaccountable contractors,” Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., wrote in a Wall Street Journal commentary critical of the Bush administration. “Let’s talk about the number of lucrative contracts and bonuses being paid for duties never performed, promises never fulfilled, and contracts falsely described as complete. And let’s talk about reforming the federal contracting system so that we can take on the real waste, fraud and abuse in our federal government.”

Republicans are “fiscally conservative” and drive up huge debts while the “tax and spend liberals” are the economically responsible ones. Clinton is doing the job Democrats have to do, clean up after the irresponsible Republicans. First thing in order is to remove the no-bid contracts set up by the “free market” conservatives.
There is a time and a place for no bid contracts, such as after katrina. There definately should have been no bid contracts for things that had to be there ASAP. Same thing in Iraq, if Haliburton had the equipment or materials needed ASAP, and had it sitting in Saudi, then it should have been a no bid.
However, they should only be for those times. If the military says we need 60,000 widgets ASAP to protect our troops, then get them, forget about the contract process and just get them there ASAP. But if the military says we need a new contractor to provide whozits that are not mission essential, then of course that should be on the regular contract process.
As well I would certainly applaud a bi-partisan commission to look into ALL contracts to look for fraud, waste and abuse, just like Truman did during WW2.
Eagle your lib bias is showing again as usual. There is nothing the Clinton haven’t done in the time they were in office. This includes the no bid contracts you are talking about. Besides I belive very little coming from the mouths of the Clintons.
No, let’s talk about whether Obama’s a true celebrity, or about Edwards affair!
Are McCain’s people putting the tire gauges out for bid:-)
generaston put it well – emergency spending has to bypass the process but not all these ‘biggies’. By the way, wasn’t the original Boeing tanker lease proposal a ‘no-bid’ deal?
Because to have a competition, the air force/pentagon had to change the desired size of the tanker to accommodate air bus only offering.
$4,000,000,000,000,000.00 Yeah, trillion, missing from the Pentagon. Was it misplaced?, maybe just a slight accounting error?
This government is so brazen with the criminality and she’s just as bad about campaign contributions and the like…we’re in trouble.
The tanker issue is just another example of the intellectual contortions CONs go through in their attempts to proclaim that George WMD Bush isn’t the Worst President Ever.
Both Boeing and Airbus took an existing product off the shelf and futzed with the specs to make their product superior. Airbus made increase capacity a virtue and the Air Force bought into it. That’s nothing but marketing; superior sales skills.
Boeing could’ve have just as easily converted 747s into SuperTankers if they’d thought of it. Airbus simply out-marketed them.
I’d prefer that America’s arsenal of democracy were entirely home grown, but times change. For a hundred and thirty-seven years, the only source of revenue for the federal government was tariffs and fees. Today, the CONs insist on Free Trade, which makes tariffs and protectionism for American manufacturing (and oil production) impossible.
Boeing was a slam-dunk to win the tanker contract until they overplayed their hand and started bribing people. They ended up poisoning the well and, in the process, screwing all their workers.
In the “Free Market” Airbus out-marketed Boeing; changed the perameters; scrounged up enough American jobs so Southern Republic Party politicians won an edge.
Since its Cow Town days, Wichita has lived through yo-yo economic cycles. This tanker issue is just the latest.
Let’s not stop at the federal level. State, county, and local governments should no longer have sweet heart deals to good ole boy buddies.
This happens every day in Kansas.
Best site. Greeat you.
What a remarkable article!
