Stephen Colbert’s serial Canton-bashing has moved northward. Colbert’s inevitable official apology Tuesday to Canton, Kan., for his unkind remarks last week on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” kicked off an assault on Canton, S.D., including a song calling it “North Dakota’s dirty ashtray.” A CNN report on the reaction in the Kansas Canton, which is near McPherson, featured one woman who said she’d like to “hit him in the nose.”

Heh, well, we nailed it here early on that this would be a rolling joke. And it is.

Canton is in the south part of South Dakota…not sure how Colbert can call it North Dakota’s ashtray? Then again, he seems to be out for the attention, which he certainly is getting.

Ya see, South Dakota is south of North Dakota and, if you accept the common belief that makes South Dakota “below” North Dakota, then where would North Dakota’s ashes “fall?”
One of the amazing aspects of the Colbert phenomenon is how many CONs don’t recognize his shtick as satire. If Bill O’Reilly had a studio audience, he’d get even more laughs.

And O’Lielly’s face would be beet red if someone dared laugh at one of HIS jokes. Yes, con jokes….if they’re hurting actual people, it’s fine as long as they’re not the people the cons like.

But you have a good point. If you have to explain a joke (and this one was pretty oblique) it’s probably not a great joke. Or a really stupid audience. You guys wouldn’t recognize subtlety if it slapped you in the face.

Seriously people? Yes, it was a joke. Funny or not I can understand how the people that are the butt of the joke can take offense and certainly can’t fault them for that. If you aren’t the butt of the joke, laugh or don’t laugh. There is no reason to be up in arms over something this simple. Have a drink and let the anger go for Christ’s sake.
Colbert did not hurt Canton, KS. He gave them their 15 mins of fame. Even if it was in jest. Canton, KS should be thanking him.
