Biden makes sense as veep

I think there’s a good chance that Sen. Joe Biden will be Barack Obama’s vice presidential pick. The choice of Biden makes sense on several levels, as Chris Cillizza notes on his blog.

Among other strengths, Biden is the most experienced Democrat in Obama’s area of perceived weakness — foreign policy. He knows it inside and out, as well as John McCain’s weaknesses on Iraq and other strategic policy matters.

Biden is a great campaigner who can also go on the attack — a crucial skill for the second on the ticket.
Biden has a folksy, blue-collar appeal and sense of humor that would help loosen up Obama’s rather academic, aloof image.

He has roots in Pennsylvania and could help lock down that must-win swing state. Moreover, he’s a Catholic and could assist Obama with that important voting demographic.
Biden’s most talked-about weakness: He’s long-winded. That’s it? The important thing is, he’s fun to listen to and isn’t boring. He was great in the Democratic debates.

Another possible drawback: As a longtime Washington hand, he could be seen as old politics, not an agent of change.

But Obama’s greatest weakness is the sense that he’s inexperienced and an unknown quantity. Biden is one of the few veep candidates who reassures on both points.

If I had to pick right now, I’d say it’s Biden.

Randy: Are you saying Sen. Joe Biden would be even better than Kansas Governor, what’s her name, Kathleen Sebelius?

  2. Posted August 16, 2008 at 6:08 am | Permalink

No, Randy is probably saying there are so many good VP choices among the Democrats no one person stands out. Republicans have had to settle for scraping the bottom of the barrel and pick the guy who was considered worse than Bush. You know Bush, the worst President ever.

I personally like Bill Richardson’s Resume better than Biden’s…. However, as pointed out in the Lead, Biden is a lot more loose on the campaign trail than Richardson…. and would most likely connect with the blue collar crowd much better….

    Yeah, “Chas” –

Sure it means something. By your own fluff, everyone now knows that you are Joe Myers.

However, to you credit, even though I detest most of your remarks, you continue to post even though your name is known, because you stand behind your convictions, right or wrong, you stand behind them.

Vaughn Tolle is a fine example of a poster who uses his real name and stands by his convictions.

The Prices use their real name and stand by their convictions, as does their neighbor Mary Caruso.

The reason many Libs post on this blog anonymously is to cause trouble, shake their fingers at others and be totally irresponsible for what they write here.

Do you think the Crapn would post on this blog and say the things he does if he used his real name? Definitely not.

Same with Apophis: I would have much more respect for him, if he posted with his real name and told me to ‘kiss his ass’ or some other thing. Instead, he hides in anonymity and makes insults behind the mask of a computer screen. He gets no respect nor a status.

JWink is an example of a poster who uses his real name.

Everyone knows my name and often use it here, or should I say they abuse it. The ones that abuse my name and personal information are the very same ones that hide behind an anonymous screen name.

I doubt seriously they would do they same thing if their name was known.

They lie when they say they don’t want me to know their name because of what I might do. They remain anonymous so they can be the cowardly insulter, the one who makes comments without taking responsibility for them.

    They are cowards.

I prefer to look at discussion as the old Barbershop setting.

Everyone knew everyone and even though there are sometimes vicious statements and unreasonable assumptions, they all went home at night that each had their say as a recognized individual and they stuck to their guns.

With decisions, accepting responsibility for them becomes greater if we stand up and be recognized.

To quibble anonymously is desperate muting of our individualism and against human nature.

If we took out all the posts that are irrelevant to Biden, this would be a pretty short set of comments.

I agree that Biden is a likely and a sensible choice. Obama absolutely needs someone with foreign policy credentials at this point (he chaired a subcommittee on European affairs and never held a single hearing, so his own credentials aren’t exactly stellar – one trip doesn’t change that), and Biden fits the bill. The Delaware Senate seat would go to another Democrat.

Most people have forgotten about Biden’s problems plagiarizing a British politician during his previous campaign for President, and the fact that he has proved completely incapable of winning votes on his own outside of Delaware in two campaigns, though not a strong point, is probably not a concern.

The only irony is that in an Obama/Biden ticket, when people consider readiness to govern as opposed to lofty rhetoric, it will look to many as though the ticket is upside down.

Obama certainly doesn’t want the “cheney model,” as his VP. The presidency must be run by the president! Obama will need a strong leadership team showing us they have the experience to run our country. But if he swings too hard in the direction opposite the “cheney model,” then is he offering such a weak vice presidency that some wouldn’t want the office? Would those maybe be the choices that would give the most experience?

    Give me a break.

That was what? 1988? And it turns out Biden had given basically the same speech dozens of times that clearly cited Neil Kinnock; just not when the videotape was rolling.

I don’t think you understand the American electorate. Much as I agree Joe Biden is as capable as any of the other VP contenders, he is also emotionally volatile and strident to the point of obnoxiousness on the stump; that undercurrent of anger will scare the folks out in middle America, who will not forget that Obama’s middle name is Hussein and that his old pastor is hardly patriotic. Sure, there’s a certain poetic justice in a black man running with a guy named Joe, and it actually is true that coffee was perhaps largely responsible for the European Enlightenment of the late 18thc, but if you trust the polls, most Americans are religious believers and haven’t yet reached the Enlightenment intellectually.
No, Obama can’t win with Biden. I say choose someone just as capable but emotionally more stable, someone on the order of Nelson Rockefeller for Ford, Mondale for Carter, Bush for Reagan, and Gore for Clinton.
And while I’m weighing in here, I think Tom Ridge (or someone like him), who is thoroughly experienced and as transparently good a politician as exists in the GOP, would make an excellent choice for John McCain. Ridge has the gravitas to step into the presidency if necessary, unlike any of McCain’s other possibilities.

We’re adults! Some of us behave as such but everyone here knows who does and who doesn’t. I am responsible for me, as I think each poster should be for him / herself.

You will seldom see me defend anyone, neither will you see me censor anyone. I sometimes post my agreement, especially when I’ve been ready to type the same words but someone beat me to it. I see no reason to type something overandover. If I didn’t make myself clear and anyone is interested, they will ask what I meant. Name calling is childish. When a poster must think someone with a differing opinion is stupid, wrong, hypocritical, and a long list of other useless slams, I know they aren’t very confident in their own opinions. Usually those are the posts I scroll over. So maybe all your accusations about what I don’t speak out about are posts I’ve never read. Which is it, Regular? Is a person who uses their own identity here endangering their life (or their families lives), or being brave?

Don’t we all have families? So, if Apophis doesn’t use his own true full name for reasons which may include wanting his family left out of this “endangering” business, he is a coward?

Because you used several nics and denied such, it sent people searching for the truth and lots was found. When all the time if you had just been responsible for every post, under every nic, no one would have looked for anything.

You remade yourself so often you became a target. You could have early on said, “Yes, I am JM, Eier…” Instead you let others dig, and look and find more than they would have even bothered to look for. If you had been truthful, others wouldn’t have spent a second trying to find anything. If you desire to become a different poster in the future you’ll need to be more — different.

If what you want here on this blog is to know who everyone is, start your own digging. Start your own “outing.” Post whatever it is you think would allow you to “get even.”

Leave those who have different reasons for blogging out of it! I don’t plan to participate.

“If you feel that endangering my sister’s life to predators who might read this blog is part of the blog system, then I know that you understand nothing.”
    ——–

    ——————————
So, it’s justified in your mind. Whatever happens to my family is justified in your mind.

If you don’t think it’s threatening, post your family’s name and address on here and let it be repeated ever so often over the next two years.

Irrelevant you say? Yet, that’s exactly what your Lib buddies are doing to me.

I wonder how these Libs would like it if I posted the names of their wives and home addresses on this blog?

You would hear hollering from here to Alaska.

There is no excuse for what they done, yet you provide them with one lindainks.

Welcome to the new Kansas State Law on stalking. What they are doing is criminal and punishable under the law.

Of course, lindainks thinks it’s justifiable.

    It’s not name calling.

It’s putting my sister’s personal information on the Web. She doesn’t even know how to work a computer.

Yet, no one steps up and condemns it.

If you feel that endangering my sister’s life to predators who might read this blog is part of the blog system, then I know that you understand nothing.

Why would I post information about my wife? I post under XXX because I KNOW the dangers of putting out personal information on the internet. But if you really want to know who I am or who my wife is, ask around. A lot of posters (including conservatives) on these threads know who I am.

I haven’t, nor will I ever “out” anybody on this blog. It’s not in my nature. But in your case you asked for it. You begged for it.

Biden can remember his lines, too, even if he has to plagiarize:

    “Kinnock (original)

Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Why is Glenys the first woman in her family in a thousand generations to be able to get to university?

Was it because our predecessors were thick? Does anybody really think that they didn’t get what we had because they didn’t have the talent or the strength or the endurance or the commitment? Of course not. It was because there was no platform upon which they could stand.

    Biden

I started thinking as I was coming over here, why is it that Joe Biden is the first in his family ever to go to a university? Why is it that my wife who is sitting out there in the audience is the first in her family to ever go to college?

Is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright? . . . No, it’s not because they weren’t as smart. It’s not because they didn’t work as hard. It’s because they didn’t have a platform upon which to stand . . .

I use to know who a lot of the nics were. Several emailed me a while ago in support of my efforts to clean up the BLOG.

I’ve deleted them, and frankly, I’m an old guy. I’ve forgotten most of their names.

If one chooses to post under a nic they shouldn’t get personal with their comments. I can respect someone wanting to be anonymous, but they shouldn’t insult some one personally by their real name.

They also shouldn’t hide behind a nic to be profane. That’s just cowardly.

    Well, Regular,

Apophis is a second rate middle school hack. He’s given enough personal information about himself that if some one cared enough they could find him by noon today.

Let’s see, he claims to be union delegate to the NEA convention. How many did we send, 8 to 12? Let’s say 12. How many were men? Half? That leaves six. How many of the six are such losers that they are middle aged middle school science teachers? I’d say one.

Yep, if the little ol’ coward Apophis ever threatened me with physical violence like the wimp junior does on occasion I think I’d send his wife some flowers. Just so he knew I could reach out and touch him!

    ************************************************************************

For the record old man price, there were 19 delegates from Wichita at the NEA convention. There may have actually been more than that were representing the suburban districts. Nine of those delegates were men.

Now, if you think I am such a poor educator, then prove it. Otherwise STFU old man.

That little tirade about “physical violence” was uncalled for. That is not my way, but I’m able to defend myself from anyone including YOU and your nutcase boy. YOU are one person who carries firearms and brags about using them on people. It is YOU who crows about the superiority of anyone who has served in the military. Old man, I think it is YOU and your addled boy who are prone to violence.

You do not intimidate me in the least old man. If you THINK you can identify me, go for it. That would actually accomplish NOTHING because there is nothing you could do with that information.

I can take care of myself.

You’ve got no evidence, no logic, no rational argument. All you’ve got is the hope you can make others die.

We need someone who will do the job, not just pull in votes, and there are more men who fit that description than the few women I’ve seen mentioned. (Sandra Day O’Connor, not among them.) While I’ve often said that a woman in the WH would be, not only refreshing, but beneficial, I wouldn’t vote for a woman on those grounds only.
