Politicians pander to various voting groups. But what if they pandered to economists? What is it that economists would want to hear? N. Gregory Mankiw, a Harvard University professor of economics who has advised President Bush and Mitt Romney, came up an eight-point platform based on his discussions with colleagues and polls of his profession. The eight policies: Support free trade, oppose farm subsidies, leave oil companies and speculators alone, tax the use of energy, raise the retirement age, invite more skilled immigrants, liberalize drug policy, raise funds for economic research.

It wouldn’t work for McCain. He has trouble finding economists to back his economic plan.

I advise Mr. Mankiw to toss all of his radical ideas in the county landfill and change the spelling of his name so it can be pronounced by the average person.
I’m guessing it’s pronounced Mank (’ev’) or Mankee.
As far as Mankiw’s views on economics goes, I imagine there is a different view for each economists. PhD’s are educated to establish their own theories through diligent research and their own philosophical view of the world.
Or, he could be a kook. Regardless, the topic sucks.
Ev was there. It was quite expensive there but found the county landfill. We were assured that it is usually much much nicer so I shall have to return! So, I am now in the county landfill and I think its a great place, despite the bad press its given about being dangerous etc.

Three generations of Bushes would beg to differ.
Yeah Rage, but dont forget the walkers and the pierce families…
The List sounds a little schizophrenic to me.
“oppose farm subsidies, leave oil companies and speculators alone”
I’m all for ending farm subsidies as long as that includes the ethanol subsidies. And the irrigation subsidies.
And then leave the speculators and oil companies alone? Heheheheheheh.
News flash. It’s the speculators who have created the commodities bubble.
And leaving the oil companies alone will ensure an unpotable water supply for eternity…
Not to mention tar beaches like those along the western Gulf Coast.
Jesus, even ANIMALS dont foul their own nests!

Good one Heckler. That’s exactly what it’s all about. There are those who are happy to let others work so they can still get the same thing. Socialism breeds that kind of attitude.
There is a great book called Atlas Shrugged written by Ayn Rand in 1957 and discusses this very idea. She is a woman of character and strenght. She believes that if a person works hard and builds a business, he should be able to enjoy it. However, her main point is that the satisfaction comes in the work itself. I don’t think your average socialist can quite get that.
Taking pride in your work is a lost art, what a shame. Just remember when government steps in, things slow to a crawl. And they never take responsibility for their own action or inaction.
The cultic flaw in Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism is not in the
use of reason, or in the emphasis on individuality, or in the belief
that humans are self motivated, or in the conviction that capitalism is
the ideal system. The fallacy in Objectivism is the belief that absolute
knowledge and final Truths are attainable through reason, and therefore
there can be absolute right and wrong knowledge, and absolute moral and
immoral thought and action. For Objectivists, once a principle has been
discovered through reason to be True, that is the end of the discussion.
If you disagree with the principle, then your reasoning is flawed. If
your reasoning is flawed it can be corrected, but if it is not, you
remain flawed and do not belong in the group. Excommunication is the
final step for such unreformed heretics.
P.S. I see the italicized link ain’t so obvious (oh well).
BTW, I find it deliciously ironic that “BorgHunter” advocates the hive-mind mentality of Rand’s disciples.
Rage, where did you get your information? Have you actually read the book or did you just to to the Ayn Rand Institute?
I have news for you. The Institute no longer agrees with Ayn Rand’s ideas. I read their little pamphlet that came with the book and objectivism is not what Atlas Shrugged is about. They claim it to be but it is not.
It is about that drive in a person that wants them to do their best and to succeed. Taking pride in what you have accomplished. I have one kid, who is a hard worker and even when she doesn’t get praise from others, she does it because she is determined. As for my son, he is just the opposite. If he feels he is the only one doing something then he is being wronged and shouldn’t have to do it. It is a struggle just to get him to do something. By the way, they are twins.
I am sure if you were an employer, you would prefer an employee who wanted to work hard and not one who was busy looking at what others don’t have to do. In her book, society gets to a point where they are too busy looking at what others don’t have to do to get something so they feel why should they work too hard either.
The Institute no longer agrees with Ayn Rand’s ideas.
Gee, that’s nice. When did they change their position?
Tax energy of course, if it breathes tax it. Don’t tax me,tax the other guy. Politicians are low down on the pecking order. Please don’t try to fix anything.
Rage in response to you question: Gee, that’s nice. When did they change their position?
How would I know. I haven’t been around that long. Of course you haven’t answered my question yet. Have you read the book? I’m guessing no. Am I right? It’s amazing how some think they can become experts on what a book says when they haven’t even read it yet. What’s the problem, is it too complicated for you to read? Too many pages? Or are you just lazy and let others do the reading and thinking for you?
Ann Randy’s books were about lust.
beber, it’s Ayn Rand. I don’t know about her other books but Atlas Shrugged is not about lust. It is very much about businesses and the men that run them. Do any of you read? Or are you just too busy reading your daily dose of common blogs?
