Former Vice President Al Gore recently took his climate-change show on the road for the benefit of liberal bloggers, Sunday morning TV aficionados and other innocent bystanders. This week he laid out his demand for a miraculous transformation in U.S. energy use over a mere 10 years. As for drilling for more oil? “Absurd,” the Nobel Laureate scoffed. “When you’re in a hole, stop digging.”

The same might be said for Mr. Gore. For while his message hasn’t changed, the political realities of the energy debate have. Suddenly, Mr. Gore’s inconvenient speechifying only tightens the vice Democrats find themselves in over drilling.

Voters’ pocketbooks are now involved, making them more skeptical about climate change — and about the utility of any policies aimed at influencing climate change. The environmental movement is facing a critical moment. Democrats who support the greenies in their most ambitious goals, and scariest pseudo-scientific rhetoric, suddenly seem woefully out of touch with American voters.

Back in June, Barack Obama made hay of John McCain’s comment that while opening lands to drilling might not have a short term direct impact on oil supply and prices, it would have a “psychological impact” by sending a signal to consumers and the market that the country was expanding its own resources. “In case you’re wondering,” Mr. Obama said, “that’s Washington-speak for ‘it polls well.’”

Ho, ho. But oil prices have fallen since President Bush announced his support for more drilling. And polls these days are shifting overwhelmingly in favor of it. More than two-thirds of Americans support expanding drilling along the coasts, and 59% approve of drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, according to a Reuters-Zogby poll. The worst news for Democrats is that support for drilling is now a majority opinion even in their own constituency.

The quandary for Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi et al. is how to keep irate environmentalists inside the tent while still meeting voter demand for lower prices. Raging against oil companies and Wall Street may get you through a news cycle or two, but it’s not a solution.

As recently as April, the environmental agenda was a progressive’s happy-clappy laundry list: A windfall profits tax, plans to sue OPEC, and even some price-gouging investigations of the oil-industrial complex. June saw Senate Democrats’ embarassing failure to move a cap-and-trade bill. Now they aren’t doing much besides fighting for a crackdown on oil speculators. No doubt they will claim that this week’s share climbdown in oil prices is the result. But, by their nature, market speculators frequently shift their bets and estimates. That’s what’s happening now, as almost everybody agrees that whatever the long-term challenges, oil supply is adequate to meet demand at prices equivalent of $4 gallon for gas in the U.S.

Equally empty is Democrats’ bright idea for “use it or lose it” legislation, which would presumably punish oil companies so dumb as to be sitting on usable leases at a time of $140 oil. Are they waiting for lower prices? House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer must have drawn the short lot, since he had to go out and shill for the Democratic story to the press: “Democrats are saying let’s drill. Let’s explore. Let’s get energy for Americans from America and have it for Americans.”

Such measures are Democrats’ first line of defense on drilling, which is to pray for some blind luck. Maybe oil prices will go down on their own and Democrats will no longer have to choose between making the greenies or motorists happy.

Even Mr. Gore, though he pretends no longer to be a politician, falls prey to such triangulation: Consider his unwillingness, no matter how dire his view of the climate situation, to endorse nuclear power as the quickest, cleanest replacement for the coal-fired plants that are a big part of the alleged CO2 problem.

Mr. Obama has been opposed to nuclear power too, but shows more inclination to throw PC positions over the side for the general election. France and Russia have made nuclear power a central part of their energy strategies. Mr. Obama, if he’s elected, will inherit a federal establishment that has been moving unsteadily toward licensing the first new nukes in a generation.

None of this is to disparage the long-term prospects of renewables, solar, etc. Such a shift won’t come on Mr. Gore’s timetable, however, but only when consumers discover new technologies can actually heat their homes and get them to work in the morning at less cost and comparable speed to today’s petroleum-based transportation economy.

Early-stage prototypes are neat for science shows. They don’t inspire confidence in leaders who put all their stock in them before anyone can say how much it will cost in time and money to hook up your car’s battery at the station on the way to work.

In the meantime, ensuring adequate supplies of oil and gas and coal are tantamount to electoral survival. Democrats, after a long holiday from reality occasioned by cheap oil, are beginning to understand that either they have to take up the challenge of meeting America’s need for oil, or voters will find someone who will.

Before the “global warming” commentators start after each others throats on this “open thread,” I want to ask. Has anyone besides me noticed the eery quiet of our Wichita streets during the evening hours? True, there are a few decorated autos with speakers blaring loudly; a few motorcycles accelerating towards the freeway; a few speeding police cars rushing towards coffee at some predetermined fast food restaurant.

But by and large our streets are very quiet. I presume that’s due to the price of gasoline unless lots of people are leaving town.

90 Billion Barrels of Oil and 1,670 Trillion Cubic Feet of Natural Gas Assessed in the Arctic
    Released: 7/23/2008 1:00:00 PM

The area north of the Arctic Circle has an estimated 90 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil, 1,670 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable natural gas, and 44 billion barrels of technically recoverable natural gas liquids in 25 geologically defined areas thought to have potential for petroleum.

The U.S. Geological Survey assessment released today is the first publicly available petroleum resource estimate of the entire area north of the Arctic Circle.

These resources account for about 22 percent of the undiscovered, technically recoverable resources in the world. The Arctic accounts for about 13 percent of the undiscovered oil, 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas, and 20 percent of the undiscovered natural gas liquids in the world. About 84 percent of the estimated resources are expected to occur offshore.

“Before we can make decisions about our future use of oil and gas and related decisions about protecting endangered species, native communities and the health of our planet, we need to know what’s out there,” said USGS Director Mark Myers. “With this assessment, we’re providing the same information to everyone in the world so that the global community can make those difficult decisions.”

Of the estimated totals, more than half of the undiscovered oil resources are estimated to occur in just three geologic provinces – Arctic Alaska, the Amerasia Basin, and the East Greenland Rift Basins. On an oil-equivalency basis, undiscovered natural gas is estimated to be three times more abundant than oil in the Arctic. More than 70 percent of the undiscovered natural gas is estimated to occur in three provinces – the West Siberian Basin, the East Barents Basins, and Arctic Alaska.

The USGS Circum-Arctic Resource Appraisal is part of a project to assess the global petroleum basins using standardized and consistent methodology and protocol. This approach allows for an area’s petroleum potential to be compared to other petroleum basins in the world. The USGS worked with a number of international organizations to conduct the geologic analyses of these Arctic provinces.

Technically recoverable resources are those producible using currently available technology and industry practices. For the purposes of this study, the USGS did not consider economic factors such as the effects of permanent sea ice or oceanic water depth in its assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The USGS is the only provider of publicly available estimates of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources.

Exploration for petroleum has already resulted in the discovery of more than 400 oil and gas fields north of the Arctic Circle. These fields account for approximately 40 billion barrels of oil, more than 1,100 trillion cubic feet of gas, and 8.5 billion barrels of natural gas liquids. Nevertheless, the Arctic, especially offshore, is essentially unexplored with respect to petroleum.

Cost/benefit.And technology. You have to be able to get to the oil, and get it to market and make money doing it. Until the recent escalation in prices it wasnt economically feasible to get the stuff out.

Drilling technology is advancing as well. There’s an estimated 60 billion barrels of oil under North Dakota that’s been known about for years. But until about a year ago no one could get to it economically. Someone took a big risk on a new idea and figured out how to get to it. And now it’s in play.

As long as I’ve been alive, and that’s longer than those leases have been sat upon by Exxon, politicians and oil companies were begging to open up ANWR for drilling. It was economically feasible to be getting oil out of Prudhoe Bay for quite some time and have been making a tidy profit.

No, the oil companies can make money on the leases they already have (had) up there, they just want to wait until they can make an even larger profit. Alaska should just keep the leases and start their own state run company. Man, imagine the dividend checks should that happen.

Well, ANWR is in the Arctic. The oil fields at Prudhoe Bay are declining. However, if the oil companies can delay enough and make the state of Alaska desperate then they can get the taxpayers to foot the bill for pipeline extensions and reductions in royalties. Anything to stick it to the people.

    Nathaniel,

In response to YOUR response to me from two days ago (sorry, I have been sick in bed with food poisoning for two days so I haven’t been up to responding) – i HAVE requested that ALL posters who want to argue AGW STOP – I believe it was about a week and a half ago.

Besides which, all I asked was that GMC stop goading Chas so that we could have adult conversation on the blog without having to be interrupted by their back and forth screaming and yelling.

I am not the blog conscience. I simply asked GMC to be polite and drop the subject after five days because I was tired of the damn ranting. I am sorry you think that simply because I asked him as an adult to please stop, since he obviously wasn’t getting anywhere and was only succeeding in annoying more people, that somehow that translates into me defending Chas and attacking everyone else. I asked GMC because I realized that he would likely listen, whereas Chas would not. It’s as simple as that. And yes, in your little rant about everyone attacking YOU and defending anyone that you disagree with, you made several direct references to my earlier request for GMC to stop. I merely pointed out that I don’t appreciate being painted with that broad brush that you are wielding, and you managed to miss the entire point of my post yet again, by complaining about why don’t I ask cosmos to stop? It isn’t all about you, first of all, and secondly, I have. I have asked all posters on AGW to stop, including Cosmos, Sol, and others (I believe that was a day your father actually didn’t post) to just agree that they disagree and quit shoving both sides down our throats – which notice HAS NOT HAPPENED – by ANYONE. But that completely had nothing to do with anything that I posted anyways.

Thanks. I can quite clearly see now that if I don’t agree with you 100% I am not welcome to post on this blog.

Of course ANWAR is in the Artic but Regular’s post mostly applied to offshore properties. If you have all of those billions of barrels of oil outside ANWAR why take a chance of ruining one of the last wild places on earth? The U.S. Department of energy estimates ANWAR oil at between 2 and 4 billion barrels. Why screw with a pissy little oilfield like that when you can go after the other 76 billion barrels of oil?

I hadn’t planned on posting any pearls today, as today I’m scheduled to receive the results of my recent back x-ray. It could be catastrophic; it could be benign; it could be nothing more than a condition requiring physical therapy; it could be the death knell for life as I know it.

Last night, I could have been pondering these gloomy thoughts. Instead, I shed tears for someone – someone featured in a website article to which Parkay alluded yesterday.

I do not nor have I ever approved of “exposing” clinic employees and casting scorn upon them. It is one thing to oppose abortion and to minister to those seeking spiritual guidance. It is one thing to passionately practice one’s religious faith and to vote for political candidates who share those beliefs. It is certainly true that some persons are more skilled than others in these endeavors.

But it is disgraceful to potentially place these employees in harm’s way. As we all know, there are mutants out there who think it’s groovy to “kill” in Jesus’ name. (Curiously, only abortion seems to elicit such hatred. Rape, pedophilia, murder as our courts define it, sadism – none of these evils seem to conjure such malevolence.) Significantly, I do not believe these behaviors toward clinic employees will affect abortion rates. They certainly incur the ire of many; they do not, in my opinion, prevent women from undergoing abortions.

I will not name the individual for whom I feel such pain. I do not know the identity of the OR staff who wrote the baleful words accompanying her picture, and it isn’t really my place to know this. I will be circumspect; if she wishes to post on this blog, she can do so. I will only say this: she has endured and withstood more hardship, grief and loss than most of us will ever experience in our lifetimes. Women should have a certain empathy, whether or not we’ve given birth.

Last night, I couldn’t help but wonder, “If the OR staff who wrote these words were to experience similar tragedy, or has experienced it, how could he or she express himself or herself in this fashion?” I pondered these thoughts for a few days; last night, the tears came. The ugliness and mean-spiritedness overwhelmed me. Because I met this person nearly three years ago. She and her husband kindly drove me home – saving me a significant taxi fare – and I can promise everyone that she is not “vile.” At one point, she mentioned that the crisis pregnancy centers do “many good things”; candidly, we both expressed revulsion for coerced abortion in any situation.

I’m not in exactly the same place I was on that balmy October evening in 2005, but I harbor neither harsh nor condemning thoughts toward her or any of the other employees whom OR have kindly identified. Several weekends ago, during my own odyssey as regards this difficult subject, no clinic employee or physician entered my mind. Suffice it to say, it was intense. It did not, however, induce hatred or scorn. It was, finally, of an acutely personal nature not appropriate to be shared here.

The principle behind OR’s reasoning here is sound: Evil, cruelty and sadism need to be exposed. (Osama and his handmaidens who strap bombs into their own uteruses probably should be exposed and dealt with.) Although my own history is relevant here – and my beliefs have not been static, I do not perceive these pathologies in the many good people – on both sides of this issue – whom I have met or spoken with. That is the crucial difference here.

I can’t imagine shedding tears for Joseph Goebbels’ wife – before or after she poisoned her six children to avoid the consequences for her misguided loyalties.

This is not to diminish the moral dimensions of abortion: they are real, in my opinion. But we accomplish nothing by disdaining the lives of clinic employees – lives we are commanded to respect, if we are truly “pro-life.”

As it is, even those who think that murdering a baby as long as it is yet unborn is fine and moral, still side with us against these travesties.

And RedWhiteNBlue, Numbers 23:22 refers to an ox, and Isaiah 13:21 says “wild goats” instead of satyrs. Also 22 goes on to say, “Hyenas will howl in its fortresses, and jackal will make their dens in it’s palaces,” and so on. Hey, did you take the time to read all of Numbers chapter 13? Well, Clark,

I probably won’t miss you. However, I do miss the Clark you were at first, the one you were when we could banter back and forth about food and recipes and such.

I enjoyed your smoker instructions the other day, I intend to incorporate some of your techniques next time I smoke a brisket. Probably won’t trim the fat off before smoking and smoke it fat side up!

My garden is doing quite well, so good that we are making homemade tomato sauce for future use. We are trying some pickle recipes for the okra and cucumbers we have in excess.

Last night I made some fettuccine in the pasta maker and made a ‘garden’ tomato sauce from veggies in the garden.

Olive oil in the pan, diced onions then chopped garlic when it’s hot. I added about a half a dozen banana peppers chopped without seed. Then added two Japanese eggplants sliced and chopped, one yellow squash, medium sized.

After the initial veggies were almost done I added four diced fresh picked tomatoes. Brought this all to a simmer and added fresh herbs from mommas flower box.

Just before taking the pasta to the colander I added a tablespoon of butter to the sauce.

Total time? 5 minutes picking, 20 miutes cooking.

Serve with a glass of wine.

“My garden is doing quite well, so good that we are making homemade tomato sauce for future use.”

Save some of those tomatoes to make barbecue sauce – homemade stuff rocks compared to store bought varieties.

    I’ll post a recipe before I go.

By the way, if I am going to “fat side up” smoke, I marinate for at least twelve hours in 1/3 lemon juice and 2/3 water or carbonated beverage. Then I “rake” the fat with a fork to help along.

The universal health care dam springs a leak

A program of mandated health insurance is already in effect in Massachusetts. Under that system, subsidized insurance is made available to individuals earning up to $30,636 annually, and families of four earning up to $61,956 per year. The state government has begun to impose stiff fines on residents who fail to purchase health insurance – and the penalties can amount to as much as $912 a year!

And this place is already known as “Tax-achusetts!”

Even though this system is in its infancy, it already has many vocal opponents. Devon Herrick, a senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis calls the Massachusetts universal coverage plan “over regulated and largely unworkable.” Herrick explains that the least expensive health plan available through the program costs $196 a month, while the state fine for being uninsured is about half that cost — $98 a month!

After just two years, Massachusetts’ universal coverage program is running at a staggering $147 million deficit, and the four insurance carriers who provide the state- subsidized insurance are estimating that costs will go up by 14 percent next year.

Even more shocking is the manner in which Massachusetts state officials have decided to deal with the out-of-control costs of their broken system: they’ve ordered the insurance companies to cut payments to doctors and hospitals, reduce choices for payments, and possibly increase how much patients will have to pay.

I only hope that Americans get a good, long look at the disaster that universal health care has wrought on the economy and people of Massachusetts before a similar catastrophe is unleashed on the whole country. The train wreck in New England is headed our way if the democrats get into the oval office.

    America: you have been warned.

Giving you complete coverage on all the dangers of universal health care coverage,

    William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

Since you admit you don’t know the specific details of each case — I’ve always offered the links involved — it’s pretty simple what “America’s Shooting Gallery” exposes: that there are a certain amount of Americans who look at life only through the lens of gun-ownership and gun use.

You obsess on your right to go anywhere packin’ heat; church, the mall, a court house, a daycare center…

You post a random story from here or there about how somebody drove off a gang of Black (that’s always implied) home-invaders… for what reason, “Nathaniel?” I mean… I post “America’s Shooting Gallery” only in response to your “Granny Kills N*ggers” headlines gleaned from a gun-nut website.

Barbecue is a religion as controversial as Catholics vs. Protestants, Sunis vs. Shi’ites, Mormons vs. $cientologists, or (as Emo Phillips noted) Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879 vs. Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.

    WS –

Good luck in your endeavor, whatever it is. Though we rarely agreed, I usually find your writing witty and intelligent. You can get vile, but generally only when provoked. And Nathan, you’re doing the provoking.

Remember folks & Nathan: It’s just politics and opinions. It’s not personal. Don’t make it so.

Nathan, the “America’s shooting gallery” stuff comes from a site quite misnamed “The Gun Guys.” There are no “guys,” the operator (his name is Mike Magnum, ironically) is a paid shill for the Joyce Foundation, which also provides the bulk of funding for the Brady Bunch and Violence Policy Center (also misnamed; violence they don’t object to so much, only guns).

(BTW – Obama was on the board of the Joyce foundation for about a decade, IIRC. But he “supports” the 2nd amendment. Riiiiight.)

If you go to the “Gun Guys,” you won’t find details as to these incidents. There is a reason for that. They are not intended to be honest; they are intended to drive an agenda. So the best course of action is to take the “America’s Shooting Gallery” postings for what they are – blatant propoganda – and scroll over.

WS – Godspeed and good luck.

    And then there is this:

Wondering about the “real” justification for the Iraq war? Trying to make sense of it all?

    It’s about UFO’s, man!

Mohammed Hajj al-Amdar said on the basis of strange stories coming out of that valley: “Saddam gave the aliens sanctuary, so that they couldn’t be captured by Americans. Nobody can reach the citadel Qalaat-e-Julundi at night. They say that the aliens created “watchdogs” for Saddam. The aliens took ordinary desert scorpions and used their bio-engineering to grow the scorpions to giant size. Scorpions of a cow-size! They are wonderful watchdogs: they blend in with the desert, swiftly and silently move on their warm-blooded prey for a decisive attack. Luckless intruders hear just some strange sound from behind stones, then a pincer crushes their necks, another pincer crushes their legs; then the victims is slammed to the ground and beaten with a barbed tail six or seven times. Death comes almost immediately.”

    http://english.pravda.ru/main/2003/01/31/42821.html

Now if that doesn’t justify invading, don’t know what does. WE must develop superior giant scorpions!!!

Quite ironically, the source is Pravda (”The Truth” . . . ).

Give me a break. I can go back to the frist time WS Clark and I had a discussion. Back in the day where he couldn’t end a post without saying STFU.

About the only “provoking” I have done as of late is asking for him to keep his word on apologizing for what he said about my mother.

I guess you think that Regular was just fine with saying the crap he did about WS Clark and his granddaughter because he was provoked?

He doesn’t need any provoking at all anyhow.

It doesn’t excuse the crap he says either.

    Good riddens to him.

I wish only the best for his family and hope that things go well there, but his vulgarity here will not be missed one bit at all.

Normally, I hate long posts, but I just finished submitting the executive summary of the Democratic platform meeting we hosted Tuesday night, and I thought I’d share it here to see what bloggers thought:
    1. The North American Free Trade Agreement should be rethought and reworked to provide greater security for American businesses and workers.
    2. It is in the national security and trade interests of the United States to have a strong commercial airline industry. The President and Congress should consider all options, up to and including subsidies.
    3. Immigration law should be based on: Consistency; Providing incentives for potential immigrants to remain in their own countries; Providing disincentives for employers to hire undocumented aliens; Creating a guest worker program to provide for more orderly immigration for those wishing to work in this country for a fixed period of time. ICE should be given the resources needed to process visa applications in a timely manner to prevent further undocumented aliens due to the government failing to renew or change visas in a timely manner. Due to the hardship of current economic conditions, Congress should extend the deadline for fiancee visas under IMBRA from two to five years.
    4. Atmospheric carbon dioxide has now exceeded safe levels. Cap and trade is like using a leaf blower; it makes the sidewalk look clean, but the leaves remain until someone picks them up. We can tax polluters and use the money to fund clean energy alternatives. We can regulate construction of new carbon-based energy plants and retrofit existing plants with emissions filters. We can mandate a zero emissions timeline for public transportation. We can require that all new vehicles meets strict emission and fuel economy standards. We can require all new buildings to meet strict environmental codes. We can assist workers in oil, gas and coal to retrain and find better jobs with solar, wind and green manufacturing. We can give our EPA teeth to protect those resources and protect the public. If we do these things, we will help to ensure our grandchildren’s future.
    5. The health care system in America is broken. Ever-increasing costs and lack of access to services are literally killing people while driving families into bankruptcy. Focus on preventative care through better diet and exercise. States should mandate physical education. Increase the supply of physicians by enrolling both fall and spring classes of medical students. Allow ARNPs and PAs to open and operate primary care clinics in rural and urban settings to treat 80 percent of the health needs at a much reduced cost. Allow these health care professionals to write prescriptions for primary care medicine, request routine lab tests and receive the results without going through an MD. Lower malpractice risks through state-wide groups. Establish public and private 24/7 health care centers in urban areas to triage and treat primary care illnesses and injuries. Establish state-wide group health plans to cover all citizens. Negotiate the bulk purchase of medicine and generics. Require medical providers to publish a list of fees for service that patients can review prior to treatment. End the practice of charging uninsured patients double or triple prevailing rates. Require emergency rooms to immediately triage and treat patients to determine the extent of their illnesses or injuries. Give refills to patients before they become critically ill.
    6. Democrats need to re-assert our emphasis on women’s rights and equality under the law. We need an equal rights amendment to establish that equality. Democrats should also re-assert our commitment to the right of women to make their own medical decisions without government interference.
    7. The United States should look inward for its energy needs. There is abundant wind, solar and other sources of power yet to be tapped. Alternate forms of technology need to be advanced. States should end prohibitions on net metering.
    8. Current methods of imprisonment are not working. Warehousing prisoners takes taxpayer dollars that could be recaptured my turning medium security prisoners back into productive citizens. Privately owned prisons do not do a good job of rehabilitation and should be banned.
    9. After over 20 years of Republican hedgemony, big business is out of control. Wall Street is acting like a bunch of two-year-olds on a sugar high. Unregulated equity firms are a greater threat to the security of the average American than Osama bin Laden could ever hope to be, threating the security of working families, making it take longer to check out at the store than it did to shop… even threatening the sanctity of the First Amendment by gutting newspapers, radio and television stations. The rise of sovereign equity funds from countries like Singapore, China and the Arab states pose an even greater threat to American sovereignty. Equity firms should be prohibited from ownership in media, retail and other industries that directly impact working families. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for greater worldwide scrutiny of equity firms. The United States should join in that effort.
    10. The rise of equity firm ownership and pressure from wireline cable is destroying local television. Lawsuits stemming from the Bush administration mishandling of the digital converter box program could result at best in a delay of the February 17, 2009 conversion, or at worst force 80 percent of all television stations off the air. Jobs in broadcasting are being lost at an alarming rate, and with it the ability of Americans to be informed. Broadcasters should be required to air local programming as a condition of license renewal. Cable companies should be required to carry all local television stations that offer local programming, regardless of effective radiated power.
Democrats should support FCC Chair Kevin Martin’s proposal to give Class A and low power television stations cable and satellite carriage, as well as a digital channel on existing full power stations for up to three years, to assist in the digital conversion, as a condition to ending lawsuits that could force a three year delay in the conversion. This would create and retain 117,000 jobs in broadcasting and allied fields, according to the annual RNTDA study from Hofstra University, and additional research at Wichita State University.

    MrC,

Looks like you all did a good job. I couldn’t find anything in the list I have a big problem with.

As for health care, I can attest to that personnaly after a recent visit to Immediate Care, thanks to a sudden attack of asthma. (I don’t have asthma. This is the second time it’s hit me, the first being 9 years ago.)

$88 to see the doc who wrote me 2 scripts. I was there less than 30 minutes, including giving my information and being checked by a nurse first. It was a little higher because I was a “new” patient. Forget that I was already in their system. But yes, it had been about 7 years since I had seen a doctor connected to them.

Add another approx. $24 for the scripts–one at $4, thank the PTB–and it came to over $100. I’m on Bush’s HealthCare Plan: Don’t Get Sick. Only when it comes to being able to breathe in and out, that’s kind of important. Still, considering what any health care “insurance” would cost me PER MONTH, I guess it wasn’t a bad deal after all. As long as I can breathe okay, and even that’s iffy some days. Allergy testing? Forgetaboutit.

As promised, homemade barbecue sauce. This is a recipe originally swiped from Bobby Flay, but highly modified.

The first rule of recipes – screw ‘em!

Modify, alter, multiply or divide – make it your own – feel free.

    BARBECUE SAUCE

    2 tablespoons olive oil
    1 large onion, finely minced
    2 garlic cloves, minced
    1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
    1 tablespoon chili powder
2 cups tomato sauce or ketchup
1/3 (or more) cup cider vinegar
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1 tablespoon ground mustard
    2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

3/4 to 1 cup beer, ale or water, or combination of the two.

    Salt and ground black pepper

Pickled or fresh peppers, finely minced, optional or to taste

Hot sauce and sugar, optional or to taste

In a saucepan cook onions in oil over moderate heat until softened. Mix in garlic, red pepper flakes and chili powder and cook for 1 – 2 minutes. Add tomato sauce, beer and/or water, vinegar, brown sugar, ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and hot sauce, stirring to combine. Partially cover and simmer on very low heat until slightly thickened about 20 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary, with hot sauce and/or sugar. Remove sauce from heat and allow to cool completely. Sauce should be smooth, but slightly chunky. Pour mixture in mason jar and refrigerate overnight, at a minimum.

This is a sweet, tangy and vinegary sauce that can be very hot or slightly cooler.

If you want to wake up your friends, mince a Scotch Bonnet and add to the mix, instead of jalapeno or serrano peppers. Do not puree the peppers – just finely mince them.

As previously noted, I only smoke dry rubbed meat and serve the sauce on the side.

    Enjoy!

I don’t really hang out on the self defense blog, I just read it. I mainly do it so that I have facts and evidence to present when needed. There seem to be several posters here who think that there are no violent criminals out there who would ever harm them or anyone else and there is no reason to have a gun for self defense.

I post the stories only to highlight that there are indeed people out there that save themselves or others from criminals with a gun.

I do hang out on a concealed carry forum, because I like talking with like minded people and getting the latest news on laws, regulations, or signs that have come up or down.

The reason I don’t hang out on a fire extinguisher blog or other place is because I have no interest in going out and shooting a fire extinguisher or talking to those that do…

First, the APS response to Viscount Monnckton’s letter from their president:

Thank you for your message concerning the American Physical Society’s treatment of the article by Lord Monckton in the Newsletter of the Forum on Physics and Society. I am writing to discuss issues raised by some of you.

Some of those writing to me have claimed that the American Physical Society is censoring Lord Monckton’s article in the Newsletter of the APS’ Forum on Physics and Society. That is far from the case. The article has been presented and retained in the form agreed upon by him and the Newsletter’s editor. You will find it readily available on the APS’ website in that form. Indeed, there was absolutely no censoring. The APS did not even do a scientific evaluation or peer review of the article.

Lord Monckton’s presentation of the interaction between him and the editor indicates clearly that the editor’s review was aimed at ensuring the clarity and readability of the article by the intended audience. As Lord Monckton points out in his covering letter to me, “Most revisions were intended to clarify for physicists who were not climatologists the method by which the IPCC evaluates climate sensitivity – a method which the IPCC does not itself clearly or fully explain.” That is, the review was an editorial review for a newsletter, and not the substantive scientific peer review required for publication in our journals. No attempt was made to analyze the scientific substance of the article and no censoring was performed.

As indicated above and in Lord Monckton’s letter to me, the article appears in the form agreed upon by Lord Monckton. Some people and news services misinterpreted the Newsletter publication of one editor’s comments and Lord Monckton’s article as a retreat by the American Physical Society from its official position on the contribution of human activities to global warming.

Consequently, the APS felt it necessary to ensure that its official position was known both to those who logged on to the APS website and those who had followed a link to Lord Monckton’s article on our website and were unaware of the context in which it appears. That is the origin of the comment that appears at the top of the article on the website. I am sure that you would not want the Society’s position to be misunderstood in this important matter. I hope that this clarifies matters for you. Let me thank you again for your interest in the American Physical Society’s activities.

    Next, Moncton’s reply:

    Dear Dr. Bienenstock,

I have had your notice of refusal to remove your regrettable disclaimer from my paper Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered. Since you have not had the courtesy to remove and apologize for the unacceptable red-flag text that, on your orders, in effect invites readers of Physics and Society to disregard the paper that one of your editors had invited me to submit, and which I had submitted in good faith, and which I had revised in good faith after it had been meticulously reviewed by a Professor of Physics who was more than competent to review it, I must now require you to answer the questions that I had asked in my previous letter, videlicet -

    1. Please provide the name and qualifications of the member of the Council or advisor to it (if any) who considered my paper (if anyone considered it) before the Council ordered the offending text to be posted above my paper;

    2. Please provide a copy of this rapporteur’s findings (if any) and ratio decidendi (if any);

    3. Please provide the date of the Council meeting (if there was one) at which the report (if any) was presented;

    4. Please provide a copy of the minutes (if any) of the discussion (if there was one);

    5. Please provide a copy of the text (if any) of the Council’s decision (if there was one);

    6. Please provide a list of the names of those present (if any) at that Council meeting (if there was one);

    7. If, as your silence on these points implies, the Council has not scientifically evaluated or formally considered my paper, please explain with what credible scientific justification, and on whose authority, the offending text asserts -

    primo, that the paper had not been scientifically reviewed, when it had (let us have no more semantic quibbles about the meaning of “scientific review”);

secundo, that its conclusions disagree with what is said (on no evidence) to be the “overwhelming opinion of the world scientific community”; and,

tertio, that “The Council of the American Physical Society disagrees with this article’s conclusions”? Which of my conclusions does the Council disagree with, and on what scientific grounds (if any)?

And, if the Council has not in fact met to consider my paper as your red-flag text above my paper implies, how dare you state (on no evidence) that the Council disagrees with my conclusions?

    8. Please provide the requested apology without any further mendacity, prevarication, evasion, excuse, or delay. Finally, was the Council’s own policy statement on “global warming” peer-reviewed? Or is it a mere regurgitation of some of the opinions of the UN’s climate panel? If the latter, why was the mere repetition thought necessary?

    Hey Farmgirl!

Home grown tomatoes are love! And, they can only be given to transfer the love. If you bought them, their still very good, but the love is gone.

Several years ago my wife had a patient that always brought her six fresh picked tomatoes is a paper bag when he came in for his adjustment. After a while I started taking them for granted.

Then one evening as I was putting them away I noticed that these home grown tomatoes were all the same size and perfectly ripe. I had a vision of this old man out in his garden painstakingly hand picking each of these ‘perfect’ tomatoes to bring to his doctor. Love you can’t buy!

He’s gone now, and it’s not the tomatoes we miss.

And she spent all of that time scaring the bejeezus out of my coworkers who readily signed up for the bargain basement price *discounted if we signed up to have it taken from our checks at work* for 25 bucks a month.

I want to know some things. 1. How do I know…other than you insisting that these people are THE BEST attorneys in the nation…that I’m getting good representation. and 2. How do I know this contract isn’t something just like insurance companies do now that they can weasel out of it the first time they have to actually put out some hefty money? Lawyers did write the whole thing up afterall. 3. WHY did you feel the need to come to MY WORKPLACE and almost act as if this was mandatory…and 4. Seriously? You’re going to FORCE me to listen to this salespitch when my company has to pay me for this time to sit here..what are THEY getting out of the deal….that’s money that could had gone to giving me a raise.

Monckton’s article only had a editorial review for the FPS NEWSLETTER, not a scientific peer-review for a journal.

Not so sure of the identity theft insurance, but my company offers lawyer services through a firm for about the same monthly amount you quoted. They did come and provide us “information” so we could make an informed decision. It was up to us to discern what was propoganda and what was real value.

For instance, we had complicated wills, power of attorney, living will documents prepared. Cost would have been approximately $800.00. Then, when we sold/bought our homes, they reviewed and explained all the closing/selling documents. And it was nice when my wife was involved in a car accident, and the other driver was cited (for a number of items), having lawyers handle the lawsuit and even appear at the criminal proceedings of the other driver.

All for about $25 a month. Legal representation is an important part of a financial plan and helps protect you and your family.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT…

    HOMOSEXUALITY?

We realize that this subject can be a very difficult one to address. Furthermore, as hate crimes specifically committed against homosexuals occur, many feel that this issue shouldn’t be addressed at all for fear of only adding to the hostile environment that many homosexuals face. Despite the cultural climate in which we live, this issue must be addressed according to the Word of God. God’s laws are always for our good, although man may see them as restricting. In the end, only obedience to the Word of God can bring true freedom. We address this issue out of God’s love for the homosexual to bless and help him.

Much of our society has embraced many perverted sexual practices that are considered in the Bible as abominations to God. Homosexuality is among the list of deviate or abnormal sexual practices however, there are many other practices that can be included as well. Pornography, pedophilia, prostitution, bestiality, oral sex, phone sex and computer virtual reality sex, just to name a few of them.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NIV): “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters, nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Although the Bible doesn’t detail each and every one of these sinful acts, it does clearly speak out about many of them. Any deviation from God’s original plan for sex between a married man and woman is still a sin in God’s eyes. The main reason we call these things perverted is because they are unnatural and scripture clearly tells us those who do such things are committing abominations. Leviticus 18:22 (KJV): “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind it is abomination.”

Homosexuality is also referred to as the sin of sodomy. This reference comes from an account in the Bible of two exceedingly wicked cities, Sodom and Gomorrah, which the Lord destroyed. Sodom was known for its rampant homosexuality and unrestrained sexual lust, as well as other sins such as arrogance, haughtiness, and disregard for the poor. When the Lord sent angels to warn Lot who lived in the city that it was about to be destroyed, the men of the city actually wanted to rape the angels! Genesis 13:13: “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.”

In the Old Testament the penalty for this sin was severe. Leviticus 20:13: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Today the penalty of death comes in the form of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. It also brings death to the soul and spirit of man because the life of God is pushed out by indulging in something that is an abomination to God. God wants to deliver all who are trapped in this unholy practice and He will if anyone calls out to Him with a sincere heart.

We certainly acknowledge that AIDS has broken out of the homosexual community, and now, many innocent people are suffering with this disease through no fault of their own. However, the intent of the above statement is not directed to those who have innocently contracted this disease, but rather to the sinners who are spreading it. A comparison could be made to those who smoke. Smokers are opening themselves up for lung cancer; however, the people who are subjected to breathing the smoke second-hand are also subject to this disease. The person who willfully smokes is guilty of destroying their own bodies, but should those who are forced to live in the environment of the smoke, get lung cancer, they are not guilty of this sin. When we teach that smoking causes lung cancer, we are not judging or condemning those who innocently get lung cancer from breathing second-hand smoke. It is simply a true fact that smoking can cause lung cancer.

The same is true of AIDS. A homosexual life style increases the risk of that person contracting AIDS. There is no condemnation or judgment against those who innocently contract this disease through no fault of their own (for instance, through blood transfusions.) However, since AIDS is most prevalent in the homosexual community, we need to warn people of the dangers of homosexuality, so that AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are not spread to the rest of society, as now, many heterosexuals have contracted these diseases too, through unfaithful partners.

    Romans 1:24-32:

24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

These scriptures clearly state that these vile affections of men lusting for other men (gay men) or women lusting for other women (lesbians) are not the natural affections God created men and women to have for one another. Let me say here that God loves all homosexuals! However, He hates the deeds of homosexuality because they are sinful. God did not create any human being as a homosexual. They are not born that way, just as murderers are not born that way. However, these spirits can be transmitted to children, especially if someone who had this demonic spirit seduced or raped a child–or even if they were close to gay people. These demons can also be imparted to others through unholy sexual acts.

People become homosexuals because they yield to abnormal acts or lust. It is through some source that they have received a demonic spirit that drives them to their lust. Viewing evil videos or pornographic books is a way of opening the door for Satan to give one an evil, perverse spirit. Though people are not born as homosexuals, the Bible does say all human beings are born with a sin nature. If we yield to the evils of our flesh it will lead to our destruction not only in this life, but in the life to come. However, through faith in Jesus Christ and His death on the cross we can break the hold that sin has upon us. We do not have to yield to the old fleshy nature but we can now overcome evil temptations and live our lives controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Sex is God’s idea and its purpose is not only for procreation, but also for recreation and the development of a deep relationship between man and woman. Nothing is wrong or dirty about sex when it is engaged in the bonds of marriage as the Lord commanded in the Bible. However, when perversions are committed inside the marriage relationship, this can be sinful also. God made man and woman and brought them together “face to face.” Oral sex is of homosexual origin that replaces the normal “face to face” relationship God intended in a marriage. The Bible describes the sex act in Song of Solomon Chapter 4. In this chapter it speaks of this “face to face” relationship by describing looking into his lover’s eyes and kissing his lover’s lips and fondling his lover’s breasts. Oral sex is not normal or natural as it is an unclean act.

No one has to live in bondage with an abnormal life of homosexuality nor any other abnormal behavior. No one has to be controlled by pornography. No one has to have evil thoughts plague their minds. There is a way out through what Jesus has done for us. He loves sinners and wants to free us from any evil practices. He will empower those who cry out for deliverance to get free and stay free. Here are the steps you must take to get free:

(1.) Make a total commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. Be willing to turn your life completely over to the will of God and yield to His plan for your life. This means you must be willing to do anything, go anywhere and give up any thing as He leads. Remember, God will never lead you to do anything that is not in agreement with the Bible. You can trust God. He created you and has a better plan for your life.

(2.) Your must pray and read your Bible daily. You must study and apply the Word of God to overcome Satan’s attacks. The way that you resist the attacks of the devil is by quoting the Word of God to him. When the devil came to tempt Jesus, He simply quoted the Word to him. Good praise tapes will also be of a great help when you are tempted. Put one on and start singing along with it.

(3.) You must pray for and seek out a strong Bible believing group of Holy Spirit filled people. You will need their help and fellowship. As you humble yourself and seek help, the Lord will deliver you. Ask God to lead you to someone that can pray the prayer of deliverance for you, as you probably will need to be set free from a demon. You should also seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit as you will need His power to get free and to remain free.

(4.) You must cut off all sources and relationships that would lead you back into sin. The Bible tells us to flee fornication (sexual sins). You must get out of any corrupt entanglements, or areas that you know will be a temptation to you. If you have been hooked on internet pornography subscribe to an Internet Service Provider that will filter out the pornography for you. Destroy all evil books and videos.

(5.) Should you slip or fall back occasionally, repent and get right back up and go on with God. Do not allow the devil to condemn you once you have repented. Put your sin under the blood of Jesus. He will strengthen you and you will win this battle because of the Lord’s promise to you. Remember, He loves you and is there to help you. Run to Him when you get in trouble, never run from Him. He will not ever give up on you! We too, will be standing with you for your total healing and deliverance. Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

(6.) You must forgive everyone that has ever hurt you. You can only do this through the power of God. You must by a simple act of your will voice the forgiveness and then the Lord will give you the feeling of forgiveness. This may be a while in coming but just keep forgiving when you think of any wrong that has been done to you. The Lord will give you His love for those people who have wronged you.

    PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE

Finally we want to pray for you right now if you need it:

    Dear Heavenly Father,

We come to you in the mighty name of Jesus and we ask that you touch this one right now, first of all with your love and forgiveness. Lord, wash their sins away. Wash away all the uncleanness and guilt. Lord we ask you to free them right now from the powers of darkness.

Now, we speak to Satan and his demons and we command them to leave in the name of Jesus! Satan, this one is no longer under your power. The blood of Jesus has set them free! We resist you and you must flee! This one belongs to God and you have no more authority over them! Be gone!

Dear Lord, thank you that you have set this one free and we are believing that you will lead them to the right people that will help them to walk out this deliverance. We break every chain of iniquity over their life and cancel every evil word that has been spoken against them. We declare they will walk in your victory and that you will enable them to do it. Lord, fill them with your Holy Sprit and guide them in the ways of God! We speak blessing and success to them. Most of all, we pray that they will feel your love for them right now. We ask this all in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

3 shot at Phoenix community college; 2 critical

PHOENIX (AP) — Officials say three people were shot Thursday afternoon at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, and two of them were critically injured.

A witness said the shooter had been fighting with another man in a computer building. The gunman seemed to be directing his shots and not firing randomly, said student Yessenia Lara, 18.

“I saw someone get punched and then I heard three shots after that. Everybody basically ducked, and the shooter got away,” Lara said, adding that the victims were yelling in pain.

A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were in critical condition, while a 17-year-old boy was in stable condition, said Mark Faulkner, a division chief for the Phoenix Fire Department. No other information on their injuries was available.

The victims were taken by firefighters to a county hospital, Faulkner said.

There was no information on the person responsible for the shooting, which happened around 4 p.m. MST.

    Hank,

You, Monckton, the SPPI, and your similar ilk do not bring any “sanity” to the AGW “debate”.

You, and they, only bring cluelessness, confusion, pseudo-science, and falsehoods.

Does Monckton really not understand the difference between an editorial review, and a scientific review? Why?

Hank, you are helping to prove that the AGW debate is over. Thank you.

    A school shooting in Phoenix?

I don’t believe it. You made up that story Linda.

Schools are gun free zones. Everybody knows that.

How did someone get a gun onto school property when they are gun free zones?

    I don’t get it.

Besides, taking a gun to school is so inappropriate to, you wouldn’t want a gun around the kids, even if it is College.

There are just too many things wrong here for me to believe that someone had a gun on school property and shot someone.

I would if I could. Several of the Bowling Alleys are owned by JOMA and they are posted no concealed carry. The others are posted as well.

I am still in discussion with them on hopefully getting them to take them down.

One of the very few places I will go that is posted. Actually, I think it is the only place I go that is posted.

I feel better at West Acres because at least they pay a Police Officer to be there.

    South Seneca doesn’t.

    Nope.

I can wear a T-Shirt and you wouldn’t notice me carrying concealed.

Most of the time I simply wear an untucked collared shirt and white T-shirt under it.

Unless you know exactly what to look for and really look hard, it is hard to see that someone is carrying concealed.

Of course, one should be careful of “printing” which is basically having the outline of the gun “print” through the shirt.

I am not fat and my clothes fit well, so you don’t see me carrying.
