That's the way it's been for years, and it's only getting worse. The time for unversal health care has come...but the big wigs who make billions in healthcare by doing just what you described will fight it like hell.

When I buy a car, I can shop a deal, I can negotiate the price of a house, shop for the best deal on groceries and gasoline. The medical and insurance businesses have us by the balls, because when your a patient, your sometimes scared, worried, and confused.

To take advantage of that is criminal.

I'm going to share with you all something I went through. I had to get my esophagus scoped. A few years ago, it was in very bad shape, and I had to have an emeregency procedure. My doctor informed me that my condition often led to cancer. So I tried to be a good boy and take my medicine, well, Blue Cross Blue Shield doesn't cover it. They say I can get over the counter stuff that works just as good. It doesn't! I tried everything! After doing some online research, I found that 70-80% of the time, over the counter meds that are newly available in non prescription DO in fact work. My question is but what about the other 20-30%? Am I doomed to die because I am in that minority? So, I found the stuff mail order from Canada. It was cheaper than the co pay would have been if my insurance company DID cover it like they should.

In the mean time, I find that I need chlorestol medicine. My doctor likes a certain type, I did some research on it, and found that while it is the most effective medicine, it also has the highest rate of side effects. Never the less, I follow his advice. Guess what, I can order it from Canada for $1 more than my co pays. It's worth paying more and getting a 6 months supply for convenience sake.

So, back to my scoping. I am scared of what they will find, I skipped last years check up. I have to arrange a ride, because they put me out for the procedure. AT THE LAST MINUTE, they shuffle a paper under my nose that says I have to agree to pay 100% of the ammount over and above what my insurance company covers. What am I going to do, back out? I questioned the clerk, and she said it's just a catch all to make sure I pay any applicable deductibles or % that is my responsibility. She assures me that it is rarely a problem. So I sign it.

Well, I just received the Bill today. They charged $750! My insurance company covers $283 dollars. Now keep in mind this insurance I have costs $780/month for family coverage! Plus my employer pays some more!

So I'm stuck! Why? Well, I trusted the medical community. I trusted my insurance! What a rip! It's just not f-ing worth working for a living and trying to be a responsible citizen! I understand why so many just lay down and give up, becoming basically worthless! When you try and do the right thing, you get roasted!

I urge all of you to be a consumer when it comes to your health care! Don't be a trusting patient! These people are criminals, both on the care end, as well as the insurance!

I LONG for the day when Wal-Mart gets into the medical care business and sends these idiots to the poor house! And I'm no fan of Wal-Mart in general!

We have got to fight back! We have got to picket these doctors, and insurance companies. Blocade these businesses so no one can come or go, literally attack "legit" medical facilities and insurance companies the way the whacko's attack abortion clinics (non violently through peaceful protest)!

"I can handle an occasional sick person, Mary. And most of the time, it would be fine. But what if a dangerous contagious disease is going around? Immunize the checkout clerks, the greeters etc.."

And you won't get exposed to those things sitting in an enclosed dr's office with sick people for two hours waiting for the nurse to call you back?

I went looking for a quote.

   And FOUND a better one.

"A revolution is coming — a revolution which will be peaceful if we are wise enough; compassionate if we care enough; successful if we are fortunate enough — But a revolution which is coming whether we will it or not. We can affect its character; we cannot alter its inevitability.

    Robert Kennedy

And what I was looking for?

"There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?"

     Recapitulated by Robert Kennedy

The endeavor to end the dinosaur fuel age will have similar experiences for us. In just the effort, we will become better as a nation and a people.

A triage approach to health care IS a good idea.

I just don't want it in the hands of such corporate giants.

It could lead to things like shopper cards. Buy a certain amount of their stuff and you get a discount at the clinic. NO thanks. Hell going into a Walmart makes me physically sick as it is.

I would imagine the Clinics would have to meet the same criteria as any Clinic that falls under standards. That is, the treatment areas would be physically separated from the retail areas by structure or distance.

I'd go shop somewhere else.

Not a good infection control strategy.

I get my pedicure at Walmart now...they have a great nail salon, and everything is so clean and disinfected....and cheap!

The idea that sick people coming to the clinic will make others who shop there sick is silly....do you know what you're exposed to everyday without your knowledge? If you did, you'd never come out of your house!

Are you sure Randy, that it is a good idea that all the sick folks gather where everyone goes to shop?

What if we have contagious diseases like the long predicted new strain of the bird flu going around?

Let's keep medical care separate.

"An also retail medical clinic cheapens the quality of the healing arts, reducing it to a mediocre standard, socially dividing and classifying people into groups."

You can find the same thing in a Dr's office and the private hospitals. Substandard medical care is too often the norm today. At least the substandard care provided at walk in clinics would be more affordable!
It's a great idea. Give the others a run for their money.

I think it is a bad ideal; I like to stay with one doctor or medical group that knows my history.
Your weight can stay the same but your blood pressure can still go up, or you can develop a rash, which can be a sign of something else happening.
If your medical info is scatter about at various places then you are taking a risk of having your info not communicated and/or loss.
And Doctors rely heavily on information and communication to make proper diagnosis especially if it has an undifferentiated pattern.

I have a good medical home with a good doctor-nurse team. We all work well together. However, with certain routine tests it would seem that it could be more convenient to have them done at Dillons/Walgreens etc. How many of us 'old guys' for example require periodic cholesterol scans? Then have the clinic communicate the results back to the family doctor. With the internet that should be easy.

I don't see this as competition in a negative way - why not simply look at it as cooperation? My doctor doesn't clean my teeth of check my eyes - but he kept aware of them. Why not do the same here?

"They might even eliminate the need to weigh-in, check blood pressure and hold the thermometer under the tougue … to obtain advice on a headache or ear ache. "

And that is why its a bad idea- those things can indicate underlying health problems. Baseline vitals are important, as well as a history. Can you tell me if your blood pressure has gone up on average by 10 or 20 points over the last 10 years?

They weigh you not because they want to know if you're fat or not, but because sudden significant weight gains or loss can mean a lot of things.

Of course, they don't weigh you when you go to the ER. There is a reason for that....they don't have the baselines to go on.

There is no substitute for good continuum of care, and we should never have to discount it into a store like walmart. We need national healthcare. Until that happens, I'm sure we'll see more of this though based on need. Our ER's can't continue to handle things that should be covered in a DR's office.

And I agree about the specialist. God I hate the insurance companies.

Great maybe walmart can outsource our doctors now too. No, this isn't a good idea. They're making money off of this on the backs of others somehow.

I can't find a doctor who doesn't specialize is referrals. That might be an exaggeration but not much. Maybe my doctor is being careful, maybe he really wants to cover all the bases, maybe he wants to spread the wealth around to labs and specialists. I'm amazed (and very disappointed!) at the times I get well and the specialist I was referred to, the tests that were ordered are inconclusive. Nobody knows any more than they did before all that time, trouble and money was spent!

I'm healthy and don't see any doctor more than once or twice a year. In fact, I avoid going (maybe when I should) because I wait to see if I can get well by myself without paying for the specialists and tests. I still don't know what was wrong but don't have as much expensive company in that not knowing.

So on the rare occasion I need a prescription I'll give these clinics a chance. Beats having to wait for the appointment to get nothing more, different or better.

When I visited Toronto I saw those walk-in clinics. These clinics fill the void between the family doctor and the emergency ward but it's not competition though, it's filling a void in servicing the client, mostly tansient (Mexican guest workers, refugee claimiants etc)in nature and holiday/week-end needs when your family doctor may not be availble. It helps to relive the pressure in emerge as well. There is no charge for seeing a doctor/treatment in these clinics, all you need is a health insurance card, the most forged document in the country I'm told. The UK has a similar set up as do many European countries. I had a cousin who went to one (I drove him) for an eye complaint, the doctor after an examination made an appontment for him to go to the local hospital where better optical skills were available to confirm wether there was a possibility of a detached retina and those folks, after examining him sent us to an eye surgeon who gave him a clean bill of health. This was on a Sunday, he saw an MD, an eye specialist and a surgeon and the whole seameless process took about 5 hours. Clinics do fill a void in health care

The one clinic I know of charges $80 for a visit; my doc charges $35. If I have a wart or mole removed, his eyes glint. He gets a hundred bucks for that. I know I don't live in the real world, however.

These new "walk-in medical clinics" should give we, the people, a faster way to obtain basic medical advice. They might even eliminate the need to weigh-in, check blood pressure and hold the thermometer under the tougue ... to obtain advice on a headache or ear ache.

At one time, I visited with a Standard Oil station mechanic while doing an oil/grease job on my car. I was waiting for a medical appointment for ear ache across the street at a medical clinic in a hospital. Turned out the mechanic had served as an aide in the U.S. Army medical corps so he was able to advise me how to solve the ear ache.

For sometime after that, I often went to the Standard Oil Station for medical advice rather than to the doctors across the street. Although the gas station didn't do minor surgery, they did save much time and money over going to the medical clinic.

Unfortunately, the down side of the new walk-in clinics and/or going to a Standard Oil station for medical advice is the income to hospitals will be further eroded. So eventually they will have to ask our City Government for an "infusion of tax money" to keep them in business.

I agree, nothing not to like. The only reason the docs are against it is because they might have to compete because it will cut into their business. Nothing like good 'ole competition to drive down prices...it's the American way.

Can I ring up my Cheetos and corn remover at the Clinic counter?

Are you taking the Walgreen's smart health check coupons today?

Do I have time to look at the makeup while I'm waiting on the doctor?
