Don’t dismiss European support for Obama

obamagermany.jpgJohn McCain’s campaign is trying to downplay Barack Obama’s speech today in Berlin, which drew a huge, cheering crowd. But it is significant that, according to one poll, 72 percent of Germans want Obama to be the next U.S. president and only 11 percent favor McCain. Obviously, Americans will make up their own minds, based on a variety of issues and factors. Still, Europe matters in the war on terror and on other issues. For example, we need more European troops in Afghanistan. “America can’t do this alone,” Obama said in his speech about Afghanistan. It’s easier to get that help if other countries respect our president.

How scary that with all of the domestic issues we have here there are those that think that Obama’s reception in Europe is important.

How far will this love affair with Obama go before we all see the empty suit behind them.

Did you hear his great speech in Israel ” “I’m here to say as an American and as a friend of Israel that we stand with the people of Sderot and with all the people of Israel,” Obama proclaimed in prepared remarks, “I’m deeply committed to helping Israel achieve a lasting peace with Palestinians who are prepared to accept the State of Israel, renounce violence and terrorism, and abide by agreements.”

Who does he visit tomorrow. Another great speech again? The man has great speech writers but when he opens his mouth unscripted we see the real man.

#2)Texas’ economy is significantly smaller, exactly half of California’s, as its GDP compares to that of Canada (#10, $1,08 trillion).

The King of France reluctantly helped the American Revolution, true.

The King of France later lost his head, during the violent French Revolution. In fact, many of the French who were friendly to the United States also went to the guillotine.

President John Adams felt pushed into signing the “alien and sedition act” primarily because the French who lived in America were trying to push America into another war with England.

Slave revolts in the Carribean forced many of the French to flee to America. The French were a radical influence at that time.

The Dems resist any real trade deal with a vital ally, Colombia, for purely political reasons.

Their opinions are irrelevant. It might make you feel all “warm and fuzzy” that others see our first black and charismatic presidential candidate as a positive. But all millions of them cannot fill out one ballot.

Further, if you think about it you will have to ask yourself what these foreigners are really coming to see: A one half term senator with zip experience, who speaks about lofty ideas like “hope” and “change”.

You should come full circle to realize the truth: “Hey let’s go see the first black man running for US President.”

Foreign Policy: Bring our boys home. From EU, from Bosnia, Iraq, Afghan, Okinawa Japan, Korea. I don’t need those countries to say yes.

Economic objectives: Stop spending more money than American taxpayer revenue. American citizens stop spending more money than you earn – stop running up credit cards and buying houses and cars you cannot afford. Maybe if US Banks had more US citizen dollars invested, they wouldn’t have to borrow from foreign nations.

In the short term, not a hell of a lot. I should not at the outset the obvious: my comments have little to do with defending or attacking Obama.

If you think I’m predicting specific developments based on things Obama hasn’t done, well, excuse me: my crystal ball is down. But at least the full-on hostility to the US will be staunched.

I simply assert that it’s worthwhile and relevant that the (justifiable) hostility the US has created in Europe doesn’t exist for this man. McCain would probably be popular too, if he hadn’t insisted on embracing the most internationally unpopular aspects of the Bush presidency.

And before you say it: No, being president isn’t an international popularity contest. But the dangerously childish aggression of Bush will, at least, come to an end.

Obama Crowd Drawn by Rock Bands

Remember back in May when media gushed and fawned over a huge crowd in Portland, Oregon — supposedly gathered to hear the words of Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama — but chose not to report the free concert given before his speech?

Well, it has been learned that before the presumptive Democrat nominee spoke to a crowd in Berlin Thursday, two popular German acts — reggae artist Patrice and rock band Reamonn — entertained the gathering audience.

Will media report this tonight, or just gush and fawn over the huge crowd again?

While you ponder, here’s what was reported by Spiegel Online moments ago (h/t Hot Air and Gateway):

++ Pop Concert for Obama Fans ++

6:33 p.m.: The tens of thousands of Obama fans are being entertained as they await the senator. The reggae musician Patrice kicked things off, followed by the rock band Reamonn.

There was music, lots of food, drink, dope, and women… basically it was just one big party, why would they leave? They sure didn’t sound that enthusiastic about him and I didn’t read about anyone passing out listening to the great “Obama” speak to them.

Also there wasn’t much said about him NOT being allowed (by the Germans) to speak at the Brandenburg Gate like he said he was going to do. I imagine most people believe he did make his speech there because the lack of that part (along with the concert) making it in the stories.

I also noticed in a couple European papers the German’s kept protesters out of the area during his speech. Would they have done that for anyone else?

BTW, wasn’t he embarrassed (or is it embarrassing us) because he couldn’t speak a foreign language?

On July 11, 2008, he made the following statement in a Town Hall meeting in Georgia:

At town hall meeting in Powder Spring, Georgia on Tuesday, Obama said, “It’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is merci beaucoup, right?”

Again, is there some reason we should let the Europeans decide on who are President should be? Why should we care what they think? Do you think we could ever depend on them to protect us? To help us financially? To help us in any kind of disaster like we do them? How about the UN doing any of that? No way at all.

Besides Isn’t it enough the MSM working hard at getting him elected for us enough anyway?

    Making wild assumptions again eh?

Europeans take crowd control very seriously after several ‘crushing incidents’ and ‘protests’ affected these types of events.

One just does not get up and leave when you want to. In fact, you can get arrested for ‘disrupting the peace’ if you start walking on too many feet and tripping over legs trying to make your way to an exit.

Whew. The Wingnut stink of desperation is as strong as the Wingnut potshots are weak. Y’all really are off your game.

Among the stupidest comments–and there were many–was this one from outlander:

“Europe doesn’t have clue about our issues. They simply want someone who agrees with them.”

Really, outlander? Ever talked American politics with a European? Or, for that matter, with Chinese folks from Hong Kong and Malaysia, as I had occasion to over the last couple of weeks? They know our issues pretty damn well, thanks–at least as well as a majority of our indoctrinated and bullied electorate does. More to the point, they, too, have a vested interest in the outcome of the U.S. Presidential election, but no right to cast THEIR vote. It’s a good exercise of “soft power”–something you Repukes, with your anxieties over “hardness” can’t be bothered with–to address the countries and peoples of the world as if they views DO matter. It’s called “moral authority,” and is precisely what the U.S. has surrendered under a Republican regime that trashes the rule of law in favor of state terrorism, torture, and murder. And more to the point, their views DO matter, because they OWN OUR FRIGGING ECONOMY.

And then there’s fleetwood, whose shallow economic theology crowns the U.S. because of our GDP. Honestly. Is there a phonier measure of the total picture than the GDP?

“The national accounts leave out a crucial dimension of the economy–the part that exists outside the realm of monetary exchange. This segment includes both the ecosystem and the social system–the life-supporting functions of the oceans and atmosphere, for example, and work within families and communities that is not done for money. So when the monetized economy displaces these elements–as when both parents have to work, or when forest clearing eliminates the cleansing function of trees–the losses are not subtracted against the market gain.

As a result, the national accounts include only the slice of economic reality that falls within the bandwidth that economists are able to grasp–recorded expenditures of money.”

    http://www.harpers.org/archive/2008/06/0082042

On the other hand, the shallowness of GDP is precisely what attracts fleetwood so powerfully, and his myopic focus on “recorded expenditures of money” as the sole metric blinds him completely to how screwed Americans are after eight years during which the Bush Administration has laid waste to American society and to the world.

Obama is going to be our next President. You Wingnuts know it damn good and well, and there’s nothing to you or your second-rate George Bush impersonator of a candidate can do to stop it. The citizens of this country know that you’re completely and utterly full of sh*t, and they hate your views. Hate them. As the good little fascists you are, you Republicans are headed straight for your own Stalingrad. And you have only yourselves to blame.

We Americans want to regain control of our economic and political lives after eight years of a sustained assault on the American Constitution and Middle Class by the Republican Party. You Repukes, with your bankrupt, authoritarian scheme, have been unmasked as the unprincipled and values-bereft followers you are.

But by all means, continue shouting into the wind and lying through your teeth about your own record, and keep trying to use moronic racist attacks against Barack Obama: it helps to discredit you all the more.

Oh, and KSGolfnut? Now that the weather is so unbearably hot and the young dudes are wearing less clothing, we all hope you’re standing strong with your “decision” to be heterosexual. Keep the faith, man!

KSGolfnut, my responses to George Bush were much more nuanced and specific than your generic dismissal of them as “hate.” Whether or not there is anything “new” in my criticisms is open to debate, But there surely were many specifics contained in them. That you feel no need to address them testifies to your defensiveness and intellectual vapidity.

You tend to do what you’re told, KSGolfnut. If Rush Limbaugh tells you that sexual orientation is a “choice,” you are helpless to do anything but witlessly repeat it. And if Rush Limbaugh issues blanket dismissals of specific criticiss by Democrats of Republicans as “hate,” you’re helpless to do anything but follow his lead.

If my “pleonastic rant” counts as overperformance, KSGolfnut, I guess we know where that leaves YOU, with your manifest argumentative impotence.

Excerpts of Obama’s Speech in Germany (Translations in Parenthesis)

    Thursday, July 24, 2008
    Full text of Obama speech

I come to Berlin as so many of my countrymen have come before. Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world. (Bullcrap – he’s there as a candidate. Liar.)

I know that I don’t look like the Americans who’ve previously spoken in this great city. (Guess what, I’M BLACK!!! Obama sells himself with the RACE Card Again!) The journey that led me here is improbable. My mother was born in the heartland of America, but my father grew up herding goats in Kenya. His father my grandfather was a cook, a domestic servant to the British. (Daddy was sorta like a SLAVE. See, I’m black enough and have Slave ancestors!)

At the height of the Cold War, my father decided, like so many others in the forgotten corners of the world, that his yearning his dream required the freedom and opportunity promised by the West. And so he wrote letter after letter to universities all across America until somebody, somewhere answered his prayer for a better life. (Cause he couldn’t do anything on his own. We all need Government’s help!)

That is why I’m here. And you are here because you too know that yearning. (I yearn for POWER!) This city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom. And you know that the only reason we stand here tonight is because men and women from both of our nations came together to work, and struggle, and sacrifice for that better life. (Yeah, the US & Germany really came together in 1945, didn’t they? German Nazis fighting for Freedom!)
Ours is a partnership that truly began sixty years ago this summer, on the day when the first American plane touched down at Templehof. (No, it didn’t begin in 1948. It began in 1941 when we declared war on the Nazi’s.)

On that day, much of this continent still lay in ruin. The rubble of this city had yet to be built into a wall. The Soviet shadow had swept across Eastern Europe, while in the West, America, Britain, and France took stock of their losses, and pondered how the world might be remade. (Yes, Obama is here to remake the world again, and in his image! Obama and his Kingdom on Earth!)

Rage, how odd that when Saddam was torturing innocent men, women and children you wanted America to keep to herself and just allow these atrocities to go on.

Now when it comes to “America’s image” you no longer want to seal yourself from the world.

What’s more important, a country’s image or the people’s lives? I believe it is the lives of it’s citizens but people like you believe it is an image. How pathetic that life has been so cheapened. That’s another thing, you say you want out of the war because it is killing people but you didn’t mind it when they were being killed by their leader.

Excerpts of Obama’s Speech in Germany (Translations in Parenthesis)

This is where the two sides met. And on the twenty-fourth of June, 1948, the Communists chose to blockade the western part of the city. They cut off food and supplies to more than two million Germans in an effort to extinguish the last flame of freedom in Berlin.

The size of our forces was no match for the much larger Soviet Army. And yet retreat would have allowed Communism to march across Europe. Where the last war had ended, another World War could have easily begun. All that stood in the way was Berlin.

And that’s when the airlift began when the largest and most unlikely rescue in history brought food and hope to the people of this city. (But, we should not have declared war on Germany. Germany did not attack us. Just like Iraq, we had no business being in Germany.)

The odds were stacked against success. In the winter, a heavy fog filled the sky above, and many planes were forced to turn back without dropping off the needed supplies. The streets where we stand were filled with hungry families who had no comfort from the cold. (Barf – another Knute Rockne story)

But in the darkest hours, the people of Berlin kept the flame of hope burning. The people of Berlin refused to give up. And on one fall day, hundreds of thousands of Berliners came here, to the Tiergarten, and heard the city’s mayor implore the world not to give up on freedom. “There is only one possibility,” he said. “For us to stand together united until this battle is wonThe people of Berlin have spoken. We have done our duty, and we will keep on doing our duty. People of the world: now do your dutyPeople of the world, look at Berlin!” (I thought the only way out was to Withdraw all forces?)

People of the world look at Berlin! (The World LOOKED, America took ACTION.)

Look at Berlin, where Germans and Americans learned to work together and trust each other less than three years after facing each other on the field of battle.

Look at Berlin, where the determination of a people met the generosity of the Marshall Plan and created a German miracle; where a victory over tyranny gave rise to NATO, the greatest alliance ever formed to defend our common security. (Yeah! We need another Marshall Plan – Paid for courtesy US taxpayers.)

Look at Berlin, where the bullet holes in the buildings and the somber stones and pillars near the Brandenburg Gate insist that we never forget our common humanity.

People of the world look at Berlin, where a wall came down, a continent came together, and history proved that there is no challenge too great for a world that stands as one.

Sixty years after the airlift, we are called upon again. History has led us to a new crossroad, with new promise and new peril. When you, the German people, tore down that wall (UMM, the USA stood strong and firm against the Soviet Union. Germany could not tear down that wall if the US was not standing behind them with the greatest military in the world. Diplomacy worked when 20,000 Nukes were aimed at Red Square.) a wall that divided East and West; freedom and tyranny; fear and hope walls came tumbling down around the world. From Kiev to Cape Town, prison camps were closed, and the doors of democracy were opened. Markets opened too, and the spread of information and technology reduced barriers to opportunity and prosperity.

While the 20th century taught us that we share a common destiny, the 21st has revealed a world more intertwined than at any time in human history. (Common Socialist Destiny)

Excerpts of Obama’s Speech in Germany (Translations in Parenthesis)

The fall of the Berlin Wall brought new hope. (HOPE!) But that very closeness has given rise to new dangers dangers that cannot be contained within the borders of a country or by the distance of an ocean.

The terrorists of September 11th plotted in Hamburg and trained in Kandahar and Karachi before killing thousands from all over the globe on American soil.

As we speak, cars in Boston and factories in Beijing are melting the ice caps in the Arctic, shrinking coastlines in the Atlantic (LIE! Is NYC underwater yet?) , and bringing drought to farms from Kansas to Kenya.

Poorly secured nuclear material in the former Soviet Union, or secrets from a scientist in Pakistan could help build a bomb that detonates in Paris. The poppies in Afghanistan become the heroin in Berlin. The poverty and violence in Somalia breeds the terror of tomorrow. The genocide in Darfur shames the conscience of us all.

In this new world, such dangerous currents have swept along faster than our efforts to contain them. That is why we cannot afford to be divided. No one nation, no matter how large or powerful, can defeat such challenges alone. None of us can deny these threats, or escape responsibility in meeting them. Yet, in the absence of Soviet tanks and a terrible wall, it has become easy to forget this truth. And if we’re honest with each other, we know that sometimes, on both sides of the Atlantic, we have drifted apart, and forgotten our shared destiny. (Shared – ie Socialist Destiny)

(Next Obama blames America for the World’s problems.)

In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right, has become all too common. In America, there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe’s role in our security and our future. Both views miss the truth that Europeans today are bearing new burdens and taking more responsibility in critical parts of the world; and that just as American bases built in the last century still help to defend the security of this continent, so does our country still sacrifice greatly for freedom around the globe.

Yes, there have been differences between America and Europe. No doubt, there will be differences in the future. But the burdens of global citizenship continue to bind us together. A change of leadership in Washington will not lift this burden. In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be required to do more not less. (Pay more taxes!) Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the one way, the only way, to protect our common security and advance our common humanity. (Great Global Socialist Partnership! Like the Global Poverty Act!)

Wonder if it’s true that the media is falling all over themselves to support da O-Man? Check this out:

“Putting Money Where Mouths Are: Media Donations Favor Dems 100-1

By WILLIAM TATE | Posted Wednesday, July 23, 2008 4:20 PM PT

The New York Times’ refusal to publish John McCain’s rebuttal to Barack Obama’s Iraq op-ed may be the most glaring example of liberal media bias this journalist has ever seen. But true proof of widespread media bias requires one to follow an old journalism maxim: Follow the money.

Even the Associated Press — no bastion of conservatism — has considered, at least superficially, the media’s favoritism for Barack Obama. It’s time to revisit media bias.

True to form, journalists are defending their bias by saying that one candidate, Obama, is more newsworthy than the other. In other words, there is no media bias. It is we, the hoi polloi, who reveal our bias by questioning the neutrality of these learned professionals in their ivory-towered newsrooms.

Big Media applies this rationalization to every argument used to point out bias. “It’s not a result of bias,” they say. “It’s a matter of news judgment.”

And, like the man who knows his wallet was pickpocketed but can’t prove it, the public is left to futilely rage against the injustice of it all.

The “newsworthy” argument can be applied to every metric — one-sided imbalances in airtime, story placement, column inches, number of stories, etc. — save one.

An analysis of federal records shows that the amount of money journalists contributed so far this election cycle favors Democrats by a 15:1 ratio over Republicans, with $225,563 going to Democrats, only $16,298 to Republicans .

Two-hundred thirty-five journalists donated to Democrats, just 20 gave to Republicans — a margin greater than 10-to-1. An even greater disparity, 20-to-1, exists between the number of journalists who donated to Barack Obama and John McCain.

The contributions add up to $315,533 to Democrats and $22,656 to Republicans — most of that to Ron Paul, who was supported by many liberals as a stalking horse to John McCain, a la Rush Limbaugh’s Operation Chaos with Hillary and Obama.

What is truly remarkable about the list is that, discounting contributions to Paul and Rudy Giuliani, who was a favorite son for many folks in the media, the totals look like this: $315,533 to Democrats, $3,150 to Republicans (four individuals who donated to McCain).

Let me repeat: $315,533 to Democrats, $3,150 to Republicans — a ratio of 100-to-1. No bias there.”

Say a list of 5 specific things he will do with regard to foreign policy if he is elected POTUS.

He can’t do that. He doesn’t know. Doesn’t have a clue!

I expect McCain to nod off at any time. I certainly do when I listen to him. But then maybe he doesn’t listen to himself.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA!

I tell ya whut, I’m getting a good belly laugh outa this thread.

Hows that “uniter” thing going for obama?

Looks like just fine on the world stage, but meanwhile, back at home, the divisions seem to be deeper, wider, and growing more so every day. He’s doing a heck of a job brownie thing when it comes to uniting republicans and democrats, conservatives and liberals and christians and non christians.

Seems to me, by the looks of this thread, the general tone of the weblog, the talking head shows and the print articles…

…that the only folks in American politics who are becoming tighter and tighter and more united are the democrat appeasers and the republican enablers in congress!

Who’d a thunk that bush would be able to unite those folks to push his destruction of america plan to fruition?

And they “united” on the bush agenda with a wimper and not even a bang.

    Including obama. FISA anyone?

I listened to as much of his speech as I could stand, but I did hear him speak about how walls between allies must come down. Couldnt help but think of the walls between the african american community and the gay community. And the HUGE wall between the evangelical community and the gay community.

So who did obama send to “tear down those (aforementioned) walls between blacks and gays and evangelical gays?

    heheheheheheheh. Wait for it…

donnie mcclurkin. You know, the guy who said gays are murdering our children.

If that is an example of obama’s strategy to “tear down those walls”…

I’m buying stock in brick and concrete companies. Those walls are going to go up higher and wider using emissaries like mclurkin to “unite” folks.

    Heheheheheh.

Yep. Obama sure is a uniter.

    Except when he’s not.

Now I wonder who will be the rock star concert act that will open for obama at coors field when he gives his acceptance speech.

And I did see free beer in BOTH hands of the Germans after obama’s speech.

Free concerts before, and free beer after.

Hell YEAH Ich bin ein berliner (donut)!

There is an inherent problem for a public figure that is loved.

It’s a drug. They want more. The last fix is gone and they want a new one.

Germany is more progressive than America.

But of course, Obama has to win votes (and new love) here.

How will he pander next to the right? Who will he sell out next to woo new fainters?

There IS still the Democratic convention to vet this….phenom.

My other choice would be what, exactly? McCain,III?

    No thank you.

I am sure McCain will be real decent to our various communities. If you think so, I am sure he’d accept your vote.

Obama’s successful world tour is the bestest thing in the world that could have happened to John Sidney McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term). The McBush campaign spent all of last week trying to set up Obama for a gaffe on the international stage. Didn’t happen. Barack was welcomed by troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, was impressive to heads of state, and attracted a crowd of 200,000 Germans (and American service people, and expatriates (like those who work for Mercedes America, BMW America, Volkswagen America, etc…) and he succeeded in convincing our European allies that not every American is the buffoon that is George WMD Bush.

In the meantime, McBush was standing in front of a cheese case re-inventing the history of the “surge,” claiming that Afghanistan and Iraq share a common border (“Shi’ites or Sunis? Which ones are on our side?”), and looking like George Herbert Walker Bush’s older crazy uncle. (What’s with that rumply black suit he’s always wearing — in the middle of summer — and is always buttoned? The old guy looks like Dorf’s dumber big brother!)

Were it not for Barack Obama’s world tour this week, McC*nt would have been dead meat. All the media attention was distracted away from his senility.

There were no Obama gaffes with international leaders. There were no Obama gaffes when he met with the Generals and front-liners of the United States military. There were no burning flags or segregated “protest zones” in Europe as were common when George WMD Bush recently visited Europe.

Americans are better than George WMD Bush.

People in America and all over the world see that in Barack Obama. In Dorf McSame, not so much.

Well, like McCain or not, he was in America campaigning for the votes of Americans, not running around the world campaigning (while playing President) to get the vote of Europeans and Middle Eastern leaders and people to become President of the United States.

Remember how he made his own personalized Presidential Seal a few months back before making a new seal for the tail of his airplane? What is with that?

Except for the times he went to England, Canada, Columbia and France, then yes, you are correct.

Read the whole thing. What a hoot.

He ventured forth to bring light to the world
The anointed one’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land is a miracle in action – and a blessing to all his faithful followers

And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.

The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.

It is true that the Europeans don’t vote for our leadership. However, the global politics of the USA is in dire need of someone like Barack Obama who has the support of the majority of Europeans. President Bush lost that respect and John McCain is not very much favored by them. I don’t think McCain is likable enough to achieve what Obama has. The USA need to be thought of as the good guys like we used to.
