On the stump in McPherson recently, Democratic Senate candidate Jim Slattery described himself as “pro-choice lite.â€
“I do not believe that federal funding should be used for abortions except in the case of rape or incest. Roe v. Wade is the law of the land for the next six years, and nothing Sen. (Pat) Roberts or I do will change that,†he said.
As for whether gays should be allowed to marry, Slattery said: “Kansans have spoken on this subject and I support their choice.â€

“While critics have called Slattery a “Gucci-loafered lobbyist,” he is adamant that he is as much for the interests of Kansans as anyone.”
The Democrats should have come up with someone better than Slattery. I read yesterday that Obama and the DNC will not take money from PACs or lobbyists. When will the Republicans do the same?
“…Obama and the DNC will not take money from PACs or lobbyists.”
Don’t expect that to be true in a realistic sense. Much like McCain finding ways of raising the same money around the regulations in his own campaign finance law, so will other politicians find ways to get the money. PACs and lobbyists will simply be ‘billed’ through a different accounting scheme.
And slattery proves, once again, there is little difference bewtween democrats and republicans in kansas.
You need a scorecard to tell the difference amongst the players when their all wear the same uniforms.
Goody. Another race I can bypass on the ballot. If my county commissioner has no opposition, and if the democrats run no one for my ks house seat (again!) and tim peterson is ralph’s only opposition…
…I’ll be able to blog all day on the first Tuesday in November, unhindered by the need to go to the polls.
Unless CYNTHIA is on the ballot in Kansas. But that seems unlikely too.
kansas… as without choices as you think!
Does Cynthia think 9/11 was an inside job like you do?
Pro choice lite?
WTF is THAT?? Like being a little bit pregnant?
I think he’s just republican lite. Like parkinson, morrison, mikey hayden, et al the republican lightweights governor “leadership” surrounds herself with.
Republican lite. And I’m not even so sure about the “lite” part. Sounds like he thinks he can win by being a moderate republican. He certainly has adopted all their “lite” positions.
So… why not be honest and run as one?
She’s asked the questions fleetie. Just like I and millions of others have asked.
And we’re still waiting on a REAL investigation to give us the answers.
Do you still think saddam had wmd, just like bush does?
Oh and fleetie, do you still think bush didnt lie us into war, just like patsy roberts?

Damn, Slattery, phucked up from what, day one?
Goodbye, go away, see ya’, wouldn’t wanna be ya’, don’t let the the door hit you in the ass on yer way out.
You ain’t a Democrat, you are a bigot.
I guess Slattery doesn’t want my vote. Too bad, so sad. I’ll skip that box come November.
You can’t believe what Slattery says. He is just trying to get elected WS.
Going against the expressed will of the people by acting like a liberal ‘Crat is not a good way to be taken seriously.
Slattery will be for giving all ILLEGAL Aliens more
american jobs.
Anyone but ROBOT ROBERTS
He does sound wishy-washy to me, I believe you do not need to tot the party line on everything.
But at least tot something! No offense, but what is it about the Kansas Democratic party that they can not find one good candidate for each races? Don’t get me wrong the Republicans don’t always pick the best and brightest but at least you know who they are and what they truly stand for even if it is wrong headed.
Come on guys, Kansas is as much Republican by default as it is out of choice. This is the year that Roberts is in bad with many and you guys put up the governor from Best little whore house in Texas!
“writerdog” posts –
“He does sound wishy-washy to me, I believe you do not need to tot the party line on everything.”
Yeah, I hear a lot of institutional Democratic Party jargon in Slattery’s statements. And frankly, that’s the kind of rhetoric Hillary Clinton was using. And she almost won.
It’s early in the race, though, and I hope he finds his voice, rather than the boilerplate that’s been handed to him.
We’re a bit tainted by the year-long presidential primary races. The Senate race in Kansas is really beginning about the same time most political races start to crank up.
Pat Roberts is poison for Kansas interests, but he’s got the brand name to sweep western Kansas, get the Republic Party money, and shuck and jaw his way around independents who’ll figure he’s not all that bad.
Why Slattery was talking about abortion and gay marriage and not about Roberts’ cover-up of George WMD Bush’s crimes against humanity astounds me.
I don’t know who’s running his campaign, but they’re not very impressive out of the starting gate.
You ask –
“…what is it about the Kansas Democratic party that they can not find one good candidate for each race?”
Money, mostly.
Look at the people in Kansas who have it.
The know they can send their pregnant debutante to Switzerland if need be for an abortion, so the “Baby-Killer”-shouters are simply a bunch of rubes who’ll vote for the Republic Party candidate, regardless of any economic logic.
Last poll I saw on the reproductive rights issue in Kansas revealed that 38% of Kansans will vote against any candidate who’s pro-choice…and 38% of Kansans will vote against any candidate who’s anti-abortion.
An absolute wash.
There are real issues the Senator elected in November will face. And abortion ain’t one of ‘em.
Every question Slattery answers should come back to how Pat Roberts has been Shrub’s butt-boy.
Social issues would be an issue in a race with Brownback, but are not likely to be an issue in a race against Roberts. Consequently, I really don’t think Roberts is the vulnerable Republican. Brownback might have been a different story, but he isn’t up this year, alas.
“Slattery will be for giving all ILLEGAL Aliens more
american jobs.”
Well, that son of a bitch, giving American jobs to illegal immigrants is McCain’s job!
Exactly, “ksagnostic” –
I suspect Roberts knew what “Phase 2″ of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report would reveal and did his damnedest first to delay it in 2006, then got the hell outta Dodge by resigning from the committee so he could say, “That wasn’t me! That was the Democrats saying…” what the investigation revealed.
First off, in the hierarchy of Senate committees, the Intelligence Committee is far from a center of power (except in egregious cases such as this). After all his years in the Senate, Pat Roberts was stuck in the Timbuktu of power in D.C. And when it became an important place, the only-est thing he could do was stall then get the hell outta there.
Maybe the Slattery campaign thinks they were getting the abortion issue out of the way early, I dunno. But I fear they underestimate the power of incumbency.
The issues are Iraq, Shrub, $4-a-gallon gasoline, and Roberts’ impotence in the senate.
Hey! Kansas has another potential ex-Senator primed to do Viagra commercials!
