It was startling to see a former Bob Dole aide, Nelson Krueger, and a former Bill Graves aide, Judy Krueger, sign on last week to co-chair the steering committee for Democrat Jim Slattery, who wants to unseat Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan. More surprising was a comment Nelson Krueger offered to the Lawrence Journal-World: “I’m excited to be supporting a man who doesn’t burn out, wear out or sell out.â€
But Roberts looks strong in the polls, including a new one by Research 2000 for DailyKos showing a 12 percentage point lead over Slattery. One surprise, considering that Slattery’s last run for office was 14 years ago: When asked for an opinion about him, 85 percent of Kansans had one (48 percent positive, 37 percent negative).

Maybe if the Lawrence World wouldn’t run their poll around Lawrence and get out into the rest of the state?
You know they might get questions like - “Who the heck is Slattery?”
I bet more people don’t know him than know him, so the poll is suspect.

and this is the first time i’ve ever read that an incumbent sitting at 50% is “looking strong.” anyone in the world of politics would tell you that’s a devastating place for a long-time incumbent to be.

Name calling is so easy. Putting down a string of ridiculous rants is cheap. Put down something you can substantiate. Blame algore and his GW buddies for our $5 gas. At least be honest.

I don’t have to know a lot about Jim Slattery. I know waaaaaay more than I want to about Pat Roberts. ANYBODY else deserves a chance and EVERYBODY else could do a better job than march-in-lock-step, protect bushco Pat Roberts. We won’t need anyone to cover up for bush next year and that’s all Roberts accomplished over the past almost eight years.
Roberts, like Dole and Bush himself, are burned out and sold out. Dole is literally on the dole. The RNC keeps him in walking around money as long as he does the occasional errand, like attacking McClelland for spilling the beans and visiting Judith Miller in jail when she was covering up for Scooter. He’s not a bag man; he’s an in-the-bag-man. Dole is Old. Roberts is Old. Out with Old Republican lobbyists, 527’s and contractors. Out with the old. (btw, where in the hell is Tom The Hammer DeLay and when does Jack Abramoff get out of prison? We might need him to tell us more about Rove’s K Street Project.)

Same Old Sold Out Roberts latest blunder? He’s trying to block the development of wind turbine technology in Kansas. Two companies, Sunflower Electric and Midwest Energy, are already generating 20 percent of their power from wind turbines. Other companies want to invest more, but Roberts and his Old World Republican Bed Fellows are trying to thwart further development by extending tax credits one year at a time so the companies and investors can’t plan long term. The oil and coal companies love him for that and will richly reward him, I’m sure. Republican leaders like Gingrich and Boehner said the Republican Party had to change or be further marginalized. Burned Out Sold Out Roberts helps illuminate the problem: They are incapable of change. It’s same old, same old.
