Great article in today’s paper about universal health care by Dr. Bill Roy. It would be great to go to a single payor source..that would dramatically change things in this country. No one would have to stay with a job they hated just for the benefits, and it would go a long way to bringing down the cost of health care, plus it would be fair to every citizen, not just certain groups. The time is overdue for us to revamp our whole healthcare system…we could take what other industrialized countries have done, improve it, and make it a true health care model for the world. We have the resources to do it right.

” recent Associated Press survey found that thoroughbred racetracks in the U.S. reported more than three horse deaths a day last year and 5,000 since 2003, and the vast majority were put down after suffering devastating injuries on the track.”

Sad news. Seems to me like they are breeding these horses with to thin of bones to take the stress of racing.

    Hankster,
I’m moving to a small apartment, and can have a pet. I’m thinking of a small dog, not too noisy, and not to wound up. Suggestions?

I watch, and love, the Dog Whisperer, and should be able to implement some of his pack-leader techniques. Interesting that I was at a friends house, a big Rott-type breed, who seemed to dislike males, came up behind me. I didn’t pay any attention to him. He started nuzzling my hand, wanting some petting. I kinda pushed him off, again without looking at him, and the rest of the day, he followed me, laying down whenever I sat down. That’s when I started petting him.

Every time I went over there, he would come up and stand next to me, or lay down next to me. Cool!!! Way too big for my appt:-)

Over training, unscrupulous trainers, steroids, lax medical requirements, shaky breeding programs, allowing horses to race while on powerful painkillers………..

(Did you know that steroids are legal in horse racing? I didn’t until very recently.)

I love the beauty of horses racing – they are truly gorgeous animals – but the sorry underbelly of the horse racing industry needs to be cleaned up – and soon.

“. . .plus it would be fair to every citizen, . . .”

Just what we need, Mary. A bunch of federal bureaucrats telling us what is ‘fair’!

Is it fair for someone that looks after his health, eats right, exercises, doesn’t smoke or drink to excess, to subsidize the health care of someone that has abused drugs and alcohol all his life and now needs a liver?

  10. Posted June 22, 2008 at 11:55 am | Permalink

Is it fair that the rich guy who abuses drugs and alcohol all his life and now needs a liver gets one because he’s got the money to pay for one?

We already HAVE rationed health care.

Rationed by who can PAY for it.

“In response to the center’s research, Al Gore’s office said that the Gore family does a lot to reduce how much they pollute, such as making renovations that include solar panels, and purchasing carbon offsets.

Melissa Block talks with Mark Trexler, president of Trexler Climate and Energy Services in Portland, Ore., about carbon offsets — what they are, and how a small consumer can reduce carbon emissions.

Trexler says that carbon offsets work by calculating how much carbon dioxide you are putting into the air, and then you figure out how much to pay a carbon-offset company to counteract the pollution.

The system works by supporting alternative energy initiatives. And after buying offsets from retail offset brokers, “You can them claim to be climate-neutral,” Trexler says.
    ————
Where is the evidence that this ever happened since he owns the carbon offset company. How dense can the GWers be. Well I claim to be carbon neutral how about you?

With little media monitoring, both Strong and Gore are cashing in on the lucrative cottage industry known as man-made global warming.

Strong is on the board of directors of the Chicago Climate Exchange, Wikipedia-described as “the world’s first and North America’s only legally binding greenhouse gas emission registry reduction system for emission sources and offset projects in North America and Brazil.”

Gore buys his carbon off-sets from himself–the Generation Investment Management LLP, “an independent, private, owner-managed partnership established in 2004 with offices in London and Washington, D.C.” of which he is both chairman and founding partner.

    http://www.canadafreepress.com/2007/cover031307.htm

That’s just one source. There are many other sources including non-profits who identify Gore as a major investor in his own company which act as a broker for carbon credits.

They’ve been trying for years to get health care and schools into a privatized- for-profit mode. In Canada, as elsewhere, the aims an objects are to provide timely, quality care base on soley on need and not the ability to pay. You can’t demand attention by reason of financial clout. Look up the results of universal coverage and the relative US standings. I’ve got family there, annoyed at what they were led to believe about universal coverage before they started to enjoy the benefits. That’s right he’s an American but by working there he and his family are covered by the plan. Only 3 supposedly advanced countries with representative governments do not have some kind of universal coverage, Turkey, Mexico and the US.

Cosmos when did he write his first book on GW. Was it prior to 2004. Of course it was. He finally realized the opposition was looking at his lifestyle and thought he should make nice about being green. So he installed a few solar panels and changed his lightbulbs. Why so late?

He’s your hero not mine. Why was that? Why does it cost over $8000 a year to heat and cool his poolhouse. As much as it cost to heat and cool his big mansion. Solar heating plants for pools have been available since back in the 80’s. Why wasn’t he heating the pool with those then.

I’m not a gullabile as you are and think I will go back out in the sunlight and enjoy nature before it goes away and we either freeze or die of heat exhaustion. I forget which it is today.

Really? Then let’s drive the sucker nute!
LOOKOUT ALTERNET! And just happens to be accurate!

Rather, the court can only look to see if the defendant has the piece of paper described in the law, and if it does, the court must dismiss the case. By interposing a certification requirement, and directing judicial attention to a piece of paper, the bill fends off judicial scrutiny of what in fact occurred.

And there is every reason to believe that the telecom defendants will have the necessary piece of paper. Indeed, there is every reason to believe that the bill has been carefully written to track the precise piece of paper the telecoms have — otherwise, why list both the Attorney General and the heads of intelligence community elements? And why include the weird codicil about the deputies of one but not the other?

    . . . . . .
To be sure, the bill then installs judicial review of such collection efforts — but the courts will not examine the actual surveillance programs, let alone individual cases of surveillance. Again, the bill interposes a certification requirement between the court and the facts.

Specifically, the role of judges is limited to ascertaining whether the Attorney General has completed a certification promising that either he has followed the law, or that he will follow the law soon. If the Attorney General cannot meet even this spectacularly low bar, the bill gives the government time to amend and to re-file the certificate. Something even Alberto Gonzales could manage.

This is a radical break from the FISA regime created in 1978, and risks severe harm to Americans’ privacy interests. The most important break with FISA is the absence of any individualized warrant requirement: it is now whole collection programs that are authorized and reviewed. And the abandonment of discrete, individualized legislative authorization and judicial review is only the first of the bill’s troubling features.

The new provisions also allow the government to create sweeping new programs that are formally targeted at overseas persons, but that predictably sweep in large. The provision’s loose language about targets — who do not in fact have to be overseas, only reasonably believed to be overseas — gives the government substantial latitude in crafting the parameters of its searches.

And before you really push this thing farther than you can defend it…. You do realize that MOST of the power in Tennessee is from Nuclear and Hydroelectric power to start with??? The Emmissions factor on such usage would be VERY LOW… SO, Gore isnt even CLOSE to emmissions usage in many other parts of the country —-not to mention his use of the Green Power Switch…. for Wind and Solar power….

Try that one in your Right Wing POT…. and boil it for a while…. IDIOTS!! Gotta learn to get your friggin facts straight before you attack somebody!! Geez!!

You can’t logically prove anything without knowing.

Actually, I said he might be leasing, didn’t say he did. Now, you’re trying to make it as part of fact of your false assertion.

If it was Bombardier, I could find out – I have a relative who is a leasing agent for them. :)

So Chas the lesser what does that difference make. Rush Limbaugh doesn’t own a private jet either. But there is always one at his disposal because he belongs to a group of leasors who together lease/own a private jet.

Until you say prove me wrong then I will say I am right. Just because you say something doesn’t disprove something someone else says. What public school did you learn your logic from.

Wow, been away for some time, but in looking over some of the threads, I see that the usual Trollish Blogladytes are still foaming at the keyboard, attempting to cause their usual idiotic problems, and doing their usual diversionary tactics, and wasting bandwidth.

There is this goon, Boxlock. Thinks he is God’s gift to God’s gifts, apparently. He is surely no gift to anything else, including the appearance of intelligence. A simple minded one trick pony, and a shill type of the right wing (and ultra right wing) – would likely feel at home with a room full of Reynolds’ and McVey type creatures on many occasions.

And then, there is the okobserver, who appears to have a new name, but the same old Blog lack of personality, and reading comprehension as its former nic, which shall remain un-named for the moment.

And then there are the bulletzie twins, Hank and Nathan; not secure anywhere without their testosterone producing weapons of personal destruction. That must be a horrible feeling to not feel safe in the community, unless they are packing a gun hidden somewhere on their persons.

And ahhh yes, the inevitable Regular who gives us such intelligent lines as this:

Just how many meanings does the great pointy cone headed McLiar think the word HIS actually has in the English language?

So, even though I have been absent, I see things havent changed a whole lot.

Cosmos is still trying to prove his very well read conclusions that we are indeed in a period of Global Warming.

Blue Jay is still trying to show us why we might need to take another look at Candidate Obama. It truly is too bad that there isnt a more qualified candidate in the mix for this year. Can you imagine? All of these decades, and we still basically only have a Two Party system.

And I see that Fleettwood is still the BDP –
And appears to have been joined by the BDFP now with the arrival of the “okobserver” – who should probably go observe the blogs at the Daily Oklahoman, instead of at the Eagle. At least he/she would find a whole lot of fellow scatter brained no nothings to agree with his/her outrageous posts, and infernal poor reading capabilities.

And as always, I have noted that Max is still the perverbial pain in the A%% as usual. So, some things never change!

I do notice a strange absenteeism of Apophis, and to some extent, BTH(Ben). And the jovial attorney fellow, Vaughn, seems to be missing as well. They both add much to the overall mentality of the WEBlog.

I was quite happy to see the great posts lately from Lindainks, and KsFarmgrrl, and Political Mama. Without them, the intelligence level of this Blog suffers severely!

Well, I guess I will now sit and watch. It has been a long time to be away, but I hope to be in and out throughout most of the Summer months.

And, for those who care, Happy Solstice!

“Is it fair for someone that looks after his health, eats right, exercises, doesn’t smoke or drink to excess, to subsidize the health care of someone that has abused drugs and alcohol all his life and now needs a liver?”

You already do, dear. Your tax dollar and mine pay for Medicaid, Medicare, AND the VA healthcare system. Those programs are chock full of people who have abused their bodies and now have easy access to healthcare. If it works for them, why not ALL of us? I’ve paid into a system that I’ll never be able to benefit from if things stay the way they are. It’s only fair that every American have the same access to affordable healthcare..not just the poor, the elderly, and the vets. I’ve contributed to my country as much as anyone and more than a lot of people…but yet I can’t get affordable healthcare or insurance if my husband loses his job, and that’s just not right.

  93. Mary_Caruso

Just think of the freedom we’d have with Universal Healthcare…no staying at a dead end job one hates because of the fear of losing the benefits…that alone is worth it. We could do it the right way…not the way Canada or Europe does it. Although I’ve never met a European who was dissatisfied with their system, it seems to work well enough for them. In Holland, for example, pregnant women have to get prenatal care if they want to take family leave. As a result, Holland has less infant motality and the babies are healthier at birth.
