TODAY, Wednesday, June 18th, is the day of the June full moon … called the Strawberry moon by the Shawnee Indians.

If the stormy weather returns this evening like it is this morning, we won’t get to see the full moon rising up from the southeastern horizon at 9:22 PM nor setting on Tursday morning at 5:40 AM.

Technically the moon is considered precisely full when it reaches the point every 29 days when it is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun. That will be just after lunch today but, alas, here in Wichita the moon will be somewhere over China at that time.

But no problem … the moon will continue to appear to be full for the next several evenings as it wanes away from the full moon position.

    ****************************************

By coincidence and with no astronomical connection, the summer solstice will take place on Friday/Saturday, June 20 and 21st. This is the time of the longest day and shortest night of the year.

Some people consider the summer solstice to be the first day of summer. Personally I consider it the middle day of the summer because at that time, the days begin to grow shorter bringing on fall and winter months.

The various seasons are brought to us courtesty of the 23 1/2 degree permanent tilt of the earth to the line that is vertical to the “horizontal” line from the earth to the sun.

SO THANK YOUR PERSONAL INTELLIGENT DESIGNER FOR THIS WONDERFUL SEASON GIVING TILT.

SPANISH PROPERTY OWNERS SUE GREENPEACE FOR CLIMATE DISASTER PREDICTION

A group of real estate developers and property owners in La Manga del Mar Menor - a spit of sandy, low-lying coastal land and Murcia’s premier beach resort - are threatening to take Greenpeace to court over its graphic predictions of what global warming may do to the area, which they say have caused house prices to plummet. The lawsuit, which the plaintiffs plan to present unless Greenpeace agrees to an out of court settlement of almost EUR 30 million in damages, comes more than six months after La Manga featured prominently in a photo book published by the environmental organisation that was intended to shock Spain into action on climate change.

Along with photos of a dried up Ebro River in Zaragoza and a desert in an area of Valencia now filled with lemon and orange groves, the book, Photoclima, shows digitally modified photos of La Manga submerged in water with only the tops of hotels, apartment blocks and palm trees emerging from the blue Mediterranean. Greenpeace says the book is a graphic portrayal of the conclusions of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which has predicted that global warming will cause sea levels to rise around the world over the coming decades. “We want to create alarm and a call to action,” Juan Lopez de Uralde, Greenpeace’s director in Spain, said when the book was published.

The photographs certainly caused alarm in La Manga. According to Jose Angel Abad, a lawyer who has taken up the case of the area’s aggrieved developers and home owners, prices have plunged by “50 percent” in recent months - a dramatic fall even in light of the end of a nationwide house price boom. “Greenpeace manipulated the expected rise in sea levels of half a metre to cause alarm. It has sunk the real estate market: no one is buying and everyone has put their apartments up for sale,” Abad claims. He says his clients are seeking EUR 27 million in damages to cover the decrease in the value of their properties.

However, Greenpeace has no intention of settling out of court, arguing that the La Manga property owners are trying to “blackmail” it into footing the bill for their speculation in the real estate market. “They’re trying to blame Greenpeace and its campaign for the problems they have encountered in a market saturated thanks to real estate speculation,” Uralde said this week. “We are not going to be intimidated.”

Conservation is a matter of personal responsibility. Both individuals and corporate. While we need alternative solutions to oil we seem no closer to any being mainstream than we were 30 years ago. Drilling off the coasts and in ANWAR are short-term solutions to a long-term problem. But they may stop the bleeding for the time being and are necessary.

On the Warren deal.. I believe the balance sheet shows that this investment (it is a loan, recall) will more than pay for itself in tax revenues. I have not seen it, but that is the impression the debate in the council presented.

The Warren is the anchor of this popular spot. Lose the Warren, lose the whole area.

It is a shame these really rich guys come to the City first, rather than last, however…. in my opinion.

1954 letter from A. Einstein to colleague

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilized interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text. For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything “chosen” about them.”

    Childish superstitions?
Such as the greatest commandment? “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself”?
It would seem to me our world would be a much better place and John Lennon’s “Imagine” would be realized if the world took this into practice.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AS PRACTICED IN KANSAS, IS THE BIGGEST HOAX EVER PERPETRATED ON THE KANSAS TAXPAYER.

For one, remember the income from the lottery was supposed to go to Kansas education but instead was diverted to the bottomless pit of “economic development.” Has it ever produced one tangible result other than “Kansas, as far as you can see from the Turnpike,” or whatever that $30 million dollar motto is that Gov. Actually, “JWink” –

The Kansas Lottery proceeds were never promised to go to education. The idea was floated in the original legislation but the Evangelical Republicans got their panties in a wad that schools would be supported by sin. You can look it up.

A lot of other states’ lotteries promise to raise funds for education. But not Kansas, “the State that Sin Forgot.”

“Economic Development” was the compromise, with some of the proceeds going to the Kansas Technical Institute (in Salina, maybe?) to put a modicum of education into the mix.

Most Eco/Devo schemes are cronyism codified.

“Yeah, we’ll dedicate taxpayer money to built exit ramps, access roads, sewer and utilities hook-ups for free to Wal-Mart just so the people who have businesses downtown — and are paying the taxes — can be run out of business. Did I tell you I saw Joe Namath at the Wal-Mart SuperBowl party?” That’s how Eco/Devo works in Kansas, and the quote could come from just about any County or City Commissioner in the state.

Re-reading my post I understand confusion on my stance on Obama’s policies. I think when he gains power and America starts to see what his agenda means to our way of life - we will have an awakening to conservative ideals. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The idea that all men (and women) are created equal. Each individual can still achieve on his or her own and be anything they want to be. If Obama is elected as I anticipate, two of our last three Presidents (Clinton and Obama) would be the greatest examples of this. Neither one of these men have come from priviledged backgrounds are one was a two-term President and the other is the first black man to win a party nomination as President.
How did Government put that type of ambition in their hearts? It didn’t.

    Then They Will Know

    (by Michael Card)

(A song of God’s inner life)
    —————————-
    I will speak
    I will wait
I will send prophets among them
    That they might hear
    That they might see
And understand how much I love them
Then they will know that I am Father
They they will know I am Lord
    They’ll walk with Me
    And be My people
I’ll walk with them as their God
    as their God
    I will strike
    I will scourge
And carry out vengeance upon them
But I will heal the wounds I make
And tenderly take them back to me
Then they will know that I am Father
They they will know I am Lord
    They’ll walk with Me
    And be My people
I’ll walk with them as their God
    This is heaven
    This is salvation
This is their great hope and Mine
    He will come
    My own Son
A Word faithful hearts can’t help hearing
    And by His death
    With His last breath
    A Father’s forgiveness comes flowing
    Then they will know
    That I am Savior
    I am Redeemer and Friend
    Immanuel
The God who is with them
The God who gives all He can
    He is salvation
    He is the kingdom
    To know Him is paradise
Then they will know that I am Father
They they will know I am Lord
    I am Lord

Okay - everyone get ready for a little diversion from politics - ’cause the Filmfemme’s got an amusing story to tell.

Yesterday after work, I drove past the Lord’s Diner. (I can’t very well avoid the place, since I live rather close by…) Every day, groups of downtrodden humanity congregate across the street, awaiting the 5:30 p.m. dinner bell. For many of them, it’s their only real meal of the day.

Except for one rather well-fed soul.

Not only corpulent but topless, one individual seemed to have been endowed by her Creator with at least two inalienable rights - and they could have nursed an entire continent. Not only that, she seemed to have recently been roughed up. She slumped over, torn bluejeans clinging rather unsteadily, and this had the unsettling effect of rendering the titanic twins even more voluminous.

As I understand it, one can be arrested for indecent exposure - and she had much to expose. I didn’t really feel like being exposed to it, but I was concerned for her. So I drove up to the church where she was perched on the pavement, prepared to trek on over to the used clothing store down the street, purchase a size-72 blouse for her, and help her avoid arrest. It was the least I could do for the most of my brethren, I decided.

“Holy s–t!” I gasped. “It’s a dude!” It WAS a dude - a very pretty, plus-size, pouting, pouty-breasted dude. I asked him if he was OK, he replied in the affirmative, and Big Bertha drove on to the serenity of home.

It’s a cruel fact of life. Many severely overweight males have manaries. I don’t know why this is so; this fellow probably needed a massive testosterone injection. But this chick can’t provide it.

Oh well, at least I’m not the jealous type. If someone with a Y chromo is more “bonny and buxom in bed and board” than I am, I’ll just chalk it up to one of those paranormal phenomena that I cain’t understand……

Correctamundo MonkeyHawk and JWink! The Kansas Lottery was sold and PASSED with the ut nderstanding that the proceeds would be used for “economic development”, which actually used to be “industrial development”.

And yer right. It hasnt produced squat. Or what happens when most of us squat.

Education squeaked in when it was noted and understood that you could get ANYTHING approved as long as it was called “economic development”, and the definition of “economic development” became so broad that it covers damn near anything.

My board of directors and I worked our asses off, at our own, personal, considerable expense I might add, to get a local “economic development” sales tax passed.

So.. wanna know what the city and the county did with it? I mean, after they fired me, abolished my board, and took all the tax money?

They built… wait for it… a freakin’ “water park” (read pool with slide). So’s “the kids” (the other buzz word) would have something to do in the summer. Never mind that we already had a pool, and could have bought a “slide” for much less than the three million dollar price tag.

Oh, and never mind that we have NO water to spare out here. And we’ve been fighting Hays forever for water rights. AND there are fewer and fewer “kids” who are born here, live here or go to school here every year.

Just imagine what that three mil could have done had it been spent on real economic development like infrastructure, job creation, or such.

But hey, it was the mayor and the county commissioners’ pet project.

Funny, but the mayor was SOUNDLY defeated in the next election, as were all the incumbent city council members.

And the county commissioner who wanted the pool the most is gone too.

    Heheheheh.

Living well is the best revenge.

The way the tax laws for economic developent are written, ANYTHING could fall under the definition. And my experience in Kansas is that just about everything DOES.

Including unused swimming pools, er “water parks” in the middle of a declining population in the desert.

I gotta say it. Jesus WEPT!

    The biggest taxpayer hoax ever!

Christian rock? Sure, as long as it’s The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, the Staple Singers, Al Green, Shirley Ceasar, Albertina Walker, The Highway QC’s, Aretha Franklin, The Harmonizing Four, Sam Cooke, etc. etc.

Department of Water representative stopped at a farm and talked with an old farmer. He told the farmer, ‘I need to inspect your farm for your water allotment’
The old farmer said, ‘OK, but don’t go in that field over there.’
The Water representative said, ‘Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government behind me.
See this card? The card means I am allowed to go WHEREVER I WISH on any agricultural land no questions asked; nor need be answered. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?’
The old farmer nodded politely and went about his farm chores.
Later, the old farmer heard loud screams and saw the Water Rep running for the fence and close behind was the farmer’s huge-horned prize bull. The bull was gaining on the Water Rep with every step. The Rep was clearly terrified, so the old farmer immediately threw down his tools, ran to the fence and shouted out.
‘Your card! Your card! Show him your card!’

WASHINGTON - The Government Accountability Office concluded today that the Air Force made “significant errors” in awarding a $35 billion contract for aerial-refueling tankers to a team that included a European aerospace company.

In a major victory for Boeing, the GAO recommended that the Air Force reopen the competition, including rewriting the contract specifications.

“Our review of the record led us to conclude that the Air Force had made a number of significant errors that could have affected the outcome of what was a close competition between Boeing and Northrop Grumman,” the GAO said. “We therefore sustain the Boeing protest.”

Energy Guzzled by Al Gore’s Home in Past Year Could Power 232 U.S. Homes for a Month

    ===============================================

“Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. Police plan vehicle checkpoints in DC neighborhood
    By BRIAN WESTLEY – Jun 5, 2008

Starting Saturday night, officers will check drivers’ ID and turn away any who don’t have a “legitimate purpose” in the area — a plan that has drawn swift criticism from civil liberties groups.

“The Constitution and the Bill of Rights should not become the next victim of the street violence,” said Johnny Barnes, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union for the National Capital Area. “This plan will treat every resident of that area the way criminals are treated.”

“Obama Adviser: Pooh Bear, Luke Skywalker Hold Lessons for Foreign Policy
    by FOXNews.com
    Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Foreign policy architects could benefit from studying Winnie the Pooh and Star Wars, according to a Barack Obama adviser who is set to attend a meeting of the Democratic candidate’s national security work group Wednesday.

Richard Danzig, former Navy secretary under President Clinton, drew several creative and unusual analogies to explain the challenges America faces overseas during a foreign policy conference in Washington, D.C., last week, according to an article in the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

In arguing that the country should back off a policy that causes too much pain, Danzig said, “”Winnie the Pooh seems to me to be a fundamental text on national security.”

He read a section from the children’s book where Pooh Bear hurts himself going down the steps because he hasn’t stopped to think of another way.

During his address to the Center for New American Security, Danzig also said much can be learned about the motivations of terrorists by looking at, for instance, soccer fans who become absorbed by violence or even the Star Wars movies.

According to the article, Danzig said a terrorist from the 1995 Tokyo nerve gas attack once told him: “We have been raised on a theory of superheroes. We all want to be like Luke Skywalker.”

Danzig argued that anyone who leads a “mundane” life and loses his or her ambition can be tempted by the promises of an extremist group or leader.

Danzig was expected to meet Wednesday as part of Obama’s 13-member Senior Working Group on National Security. It includes former members of Congress and high-ranking Clinton administration officials.”

Responding to the threat of a legal challenge, interim D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles cited a similar case involving New York City police, who once stopped motorists in the Bronx at random hours, mostly in the evening, to curtail drive-by shootings, drugs and robberies. Neighborhood residents and commercial vehicles were allowed to pass, while others were turned away.

A federal appeals court ruled in 1996 that those police tactics were constitutional, saying that the checkpoints “were reasonably viewed as an effective mechanism” to reduce drive-by shootings.

    Glass Houses

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/house.asp

    Claim: E-mail compares George W. Bush’s eco-friendly ranch with Al Gore’s energy-expending mansion.

    Status: True.

    Example: [Collected via e-mail, 2007]

“LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.

    HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern “snow belt,” either. It’s in the South.

    HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every “green” feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as “the Texas White House,” it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

So whose house is gentler on the environment? Yet another story you WON’T hear on CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC or read about in the New York Times or the Washington Post. Indeed, for Mr. Gore, it’s truly “an inconvenient truth.” “

D.C. Police to Check Drivers In Violence-Plagued Trinidad

    By Allison Klein
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Thursday, June 5, 2008; A01

D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced a military-style checkpoint yesterday to stop cars this weekend in a Northeast Washington neighborhood inundated by gun violence, saying it will help keep criminals out of the area.

Starting on Saturday, officers will check drivers’ identification and ask whether they have a “legitimate purpose” to be in the Trinidad area, such as going to a doctor or church or visiting friends or relatives. If not, the drivers will be turned away.

    Al Gore’s Energy Use

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/gorehome.asp

“Claim: Al Gore’s residence uses considerably more energy than the average American home.

    Status: True.

    Example: [Collected February 2007]

Al Gore’s Personal Energy Use Is His Own “Inconvenient Truth”

Gore’s home uses more than 20 times the national average

Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee
Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh - more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh-guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.”
