It’s getting harder and harder to understand where John McCain stands on energy. Here’s his story, just this year:

First he was against all subsidies. Then his policy staff told us that solar and wind did, after all, need tax credits even though McCain had voted against these. Then he was against subsidies again, except that there weren’t enough of them for nuclear in the Warner-Lieberman climate change bill, so he couldn’t support it. But he was definitely for renewables, efficiency, and for serious action on global warming.

Then, today in Richmond, a donor offered him an entirely new version of his position, which McCain promptly embraced. McCain was gung-ho about nuclear power and expanded domestic drilling for oil and natural gas. When a donor in Richmond summed up his advice as “nuclear, and drill wherever we’ve got it,” McCain responded: “You just gave my speech. Thank you, my friend.”

This new position contradicts all previous versions of McCain’s stated energy goals, makes doing anything meaningful about global warming impossible, and puts McCain solidly in the “all-oil, 24/7″ Bush wing of American politics.

Other then the obvious that contrary to the claim that we were not going to stay in Iraq.
Part of the problem that Bush is having is that he is treating Iraq as a “war Prize”. Dictating the conditions for our continued presents there. It like a burglar whom has broken into your house and than argues the conditions for him to stay.

I am not sure just whom the Administration hopes to fool, Bush claimed yesterday that the intent is not to set up an agreement that is binding to the next Administration. Yet he want to increase the number of permanent bases to over fifty. The agreement that we are operating under expires in December, that means what that the agreement that Bush is want would cover only to January when the new Administration is sworn in?

Damn those unruly Iraqis home owner not wanting to share their house with the burglar!
Don’t they understand we are America and entitled to have anything we decide we want.

With the President, House and Senate bought and paid for by business, we, as the average American, don’t stand a chance in hell of correcting the problem. For instance, when the bankruptcy laws were changed to keep out the little people (70% of the population), banks and financial institutions poured millions into the financial committees political coffer. Could have one possibly expected any other outcome?

How much are the lobbies spending every year? In 1998, 1.45 billion; in 2007, double that. And in a presidential year? Ridiculous.
    http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/index.php

    Remember the Abramoff scandal, and how Washington was going to nip that influence peddling in the bud? . . . . . . . . . . . . . still waiting . . . . . .

Nope, us wee people have been, and are still being, screwed by both business and Washington. Can you say Bear Stearns? How about Enron. And these greedy businesses are just getting started. With a credit crunch in full swing, maybe people will finally realize the credit card industry, and respective financial institutions, are ruining this country. But I seriously doubt it.

When the savings rate is a negative number in this country, we’re in trouble, and all the credit in the world ain’t going to change it. In fact, it can only make it worse. Bite the bullet and pay cash, get out of the credit loop, and become an independent person. Now ain’t that an idea!

Cheney’s false comment on oil drilling attacked

Vice President Cheney criticized for saying falsely China is drilling for oil off Florida
    http://www.rawstory.com/news/mochila/Cheney_s_false_comment_on_oil_drill_06132008.html
    =================================================
Interesting story. Seems the Republicans will use anything to further their obsession with oil.

I’ll make this observation: Let the oil companies drill for oil off the coast. But make them either donate, or use, their own money in massive research projects on new energy production NOT using oil. Have an oversight committee, composed of bipartisan members of congress, with NO interference allowed by any energy company. A completely sealed committee, whose only job is to oversee the energy projects.

If anyone believes that could happen, pass me some of that sh** you’re smoking.

Funny thing about those pictures in the USA Today link… They look exactly like those “phonied up” pictures from Obama’s Supposed Houston office headquarters, which were later proven to be false… Wonder how those same two pictures now show up on the Judge’s wall??? “Notice how the wall pictures are a bit fuzzy”

It is possible to produce that effect, Chas, with a digital SLR set to a wide open aperture – the depth of field would be very shallow. I have a non-digital SLR combined with a very fast 1.2f 50mm lens that can take pictures like that.

That having been said, I seriously doubt that a judge or any public official has a framed photo of Che on the wall in his office.

Only 21 deep water drilling rigs in the world!!!!

Bloomberg is reporting how Petrobras, the state-owned Brazilian oil company, has leased around 80% of the world’s deep water offshore drilling oil rigs. The rigs can drill in water approaching 10,000 feet in depth. Currently, the world has a supply of 21 such rigs that are capable of such depths.

Given the need for increased supply to meet current demand (which is slightly outstripping supply), producers are moving to more deep water exploration. While placing rigs under contract can be expensive, it can also give Petrobras a strategic advantage. Not only will they have more ability to tap resources that may end up being extensive, the company is also forcing competitors to pay higher rents for available rigs, in some cases as much as $50,000 more per day. The contract rates Petrobras currently has in place range from $410,000 to $580,000 per day. Truly amazing. Who is the big winner? Possibly Transocean (RIG), the world’s largest offshore driller. Petrobras is attempting to extend its leases with Transocean 3 years beyond current expiration dates.

    Chas,
Your question is one I’ve asked myself often. All I can think is that Heckler may be right, although I doubt he’s able to translate from the original text. Perhaps God only loves those who believe in him. Then again, doesn’t the Bible state that God loves even the sinner?

Damn if you do, and damned if you don’t. ;)

  47. Predestined
    Posted June 14, 2008 at 12:48 pm | Permalink

Okay, I’ve been running some things through my head lately, and maybe someone can explain the questions I have.

(That first “damn” above should’ve been “damned” btw)

    First question:
    Where is heaven located?
I can understand how those who were around during both the Old and New Testaments might have believed that it was up in the sky. But we now know that once one gets past the pretty blue and the white clouds (those clouds that the angels are on in paintings), there’s darkness…and more planets and stars. So is God outside or inside of the universe, and just where?

    Second question, related to first:
Where is hell? That lake of fire? Middle Earth? But, but, if God created the universe and there’s that possibility that we are not the only living beings, does each planet or whatever have its own hell? Or is hell like heaven and “out there” somewhere?

It’s like the age old puzzle of God always having been and always will be. When I was a kid, that used to blow my mind. I’m far from being a kid now, but it’s still very hard to grasp.

I’m also not sure that God made Man in his image. It’s more believable that Man made God in his. (Or in the image of Zeus, with that white beard and all.)

Really, I’d appreciate any ideas of the location f heaven and hell.

Someone who knows how to save money, or someone who spends uncontrollably?

Senators John McCain and Barack Obama released their Senate financial disclosure statements on Friday, revealing that Mr. McCain and his wife had at least $225,000 in credit card debt and that Mr. Obama and his wife had put more than $200,000 into college funds for their daughters.

I know the McCains are richer than god, but I cannot fathom how you can run up that much credit card debt. But then, I can’t fathom how I could ever get a $225,000 credit limit.

Neither Queen Latifah nor her partner have ever officially come out. Queen Latifah has, however, given her special friend attention and treatment that suggests they’re more than just good friends. Last year she bought Jeannette a Range Rover, and had it delivered to a restaurant to surprise her.

According to the National Enquirer, the couple are “planning an intimate ceremony with close famiy and friends.” They are also reportedly interested in adopting an American baby.”

    God’s Wrath Against Mankind
18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

    1 Timothy 5

17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.
18 For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain,”[b] and “The worker deserves his wages.”
19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.
20Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning.

    Imagine all the people

    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer

Please note: Timothy, Paul and Peter all had a direct earthly releationship with Jesus Christ.

    Chas,

Again, as you are well known for, you jump to conclusions.

If there is no heaven or hell, does not mean that God doesn’t exist, you are correct.

God doesn’t require a heaven or a hell, but he created both, as well as a physical or material creation. It was as a reflection of Him, with man being his image-bearer.

“Please note: Timothy, Paul and Peter all had a direct earthly releationship with Jesus Christ.”

Paul never met Jesus and the others claimed a relationship, as if that would make a difference.

Why is Paul or Timothy’s word better than John Lennon’s?

Why is the Bible the absolute truth and what John Lennon wrote is not?

Why not just do the right thing?

    Pretty simple, it would seem.

But people either don’t do the right thing or do the wrong thing rightly or do the right thing wrongly ot both-were-right-but-both-were-wrong and…

Just what is the ADVANTAGE of free will?

Whose live wouldn’t be better if everything you encountered were considered “God’s Will,” and you really believed it? You’d come across a gay couple that wants to marry and you’d accept it as “God’s Will.” Or a 13-year-old pregnant victim of incest was desperate to retrieve some semblance of a normal life for a 13-year-old?

It all comes down to this grade school playground bully (”God”) who has the power to bestow free will or damn you for taking advantage of it, just like He likes to rip the wings off of butterflies.

Somehow, I feel better about believing in a God who’s better than that.

I remember Thomas Jefferson’s quote: “I tremble for my country when I think that God is just.”

Sometimes I think God is just… watching.

Why should God get involved when folks such as “Nathaniel” are ready and willing to step up and determine who is or isn’t a “Christian”?

“Take the afternoon off, God. ‘Nathaniel’s’ taking over the judgment duties and Tim Russert wants to dicsuss his plea bargain.”

Have we settled this religion thing, yet?

Ya know the Koran has a lot of text about Mary, the mother of Jesus. She is held in very high regard in the Muslim Holy book.

    See http://www.sol.com.au/kor/22_02.htm

“Even more surprising is the Koran’s reverence for Mary, mother of Christ. Muhammad (and also in later Islamic theological scriptures) regarded Mary as the most marvellous of all women, a high adept and living example of the pure and holy life. Later Koranic commentaries describe Mary as an intervening force between God (Allah) and humanity. This intervening force is characterised by Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, sweetness and humility- the embodiment of Allah’s love for creation.

When Muhammad retook Mecca he began a programme of removing the pagan influences from the Kaaba, the most holy of Muslim sites. He removed many frescoes and images that he considered inauspicious but he specifically left on the walls a fresco of the Virgin Mary and her child.”

National gasoline prices hit $4/gallon last week. And the last of the auto industry’s chickens came home to roost. General Motors closed four more assembly plants that had been making trucks and SUVs and said it might dump its Hummer brand.

This brings the total (and avoidable) economic carnage from Detroit’s unwillingness to modernize its fleet a decade ago to 35 assembly plants and 35 parts manufacturers in just three years. The industry now concedes that consumer preferences have changed “irrevocably.”

Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer lambasted the industry and the government, pointing out that by letting the oil market, instead of preventive taxes and regulation, end the SUV era, we committed economic suicide: “Unfortunately, instead of hiking the price ourselves by means of a gasoline tax that could be instantly refunded to the American people in the form of lower payroll taxes, we let the Saudis, Venezuelans, Russians and Iranians do the taxing for us — and pocket the money that the tax would have recycled back to the American worker.”

Krauthammer doesn’t agree with us about the need for fuel-efficiency standards — he thinks that gas taxes alone would have done the job. But his basic point is right. We’re now transferring to petro-states hundreds of billions of dollars a year that we could have kept at home. We’re also stuck with a whole decade’s worth of gas-guzzling vehicles that no one can afford to drive and that will almost certainly remain a major drag on millions of household budgets for years to come.

  147. KansasNative
    Posted June 14, 2008 at 9:19 pm | Permalink

If Detroit were rational and thought about the long-term interests of the United States, Krauthammer might be right that gas prices alone would be enough. But instead the industry has demonstrated that it is wildly irrational. Its long-term vision doesn’t extend farther than moving assembly plants to Mexico, something that Ford is already doing with a new Fiesta assembly line.

So it’s a major problem that the Bush administration is about to adopt fuel-efficiency rules that assume that the price of gasoline will drop all the way back to $2.45 a gallon. That assumption sets a fuel-efficiency standard of 31 mpg as the best the auto industry can do by 2015. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) admits that if it were to assume $3.40 a gasoline, the industry could easily reach 35 mpg by 2015. NHTSA should regulate on the basis of reality, not fantasy. We need more cars sooner that get better gas mileage. Tell NHTSA that Detroit should speed up their manufacture.

Auto-making communities and workers, as well as auto drivers, are paying dearly for Detroit’s fuel obsession with high-markup, technically outmoded, behemoth trucks and SUVs. Our economy has been devastated by Detroit’s admitted assumption that gasoline could “never” cost more than $2.50/gallon — we shouldn’t condemn ourselves to another decade of avoidable pain and inefficiency — the world can’t afford it.

Detroit seems to only concerned about the very short-term… the next quarter’s profits. And how to maximize those, with no concern about later profits.

A very detailed report on higher efficiency is at,
    http://www.oilendgame.com/ReadTheBook.html

Available technology would increase mpg’s, but state-of-art vehicles are needed.

Fuel is around 1/8th of the total vehicle cost, and high fuel costs (like in Europe) have been insufficient to produce state-of-art vehicles.

They list other ideas that would help — feebates, retooling loan guarantees, various “carrots”, etc.

Black conservatives conflicted on Obama campaign By FREDERIC J. FROMMER, Associated Press Writer
Sat Jun 14, 7:18 PM ET

Black conservative talk show host Armstrong Williams has never voted for a Democrat for president. That could change this year with Barack Obama as the Democratic Party’s nominee.

“I don’t necessarily like his policies; I don’t like much that he advocates, but for the first time in my life, history thrusts me to really seriously think about it,” Williams said. “I can honestly say I have no idea who I’m going to pull that lever for in November. And to me, that’s incredible.”

Just as Obama has touched black Democratic voters, he has engendered conflicting emotions among black Republicans. They revel over the possibility of a black president but wrestle with the thought that the Illinois senator doesn’t sit beside them ideologically.

1degree F warmer on average. Can ya feel the heat!

Of course, the 1 degree F warmer is relatively meaningless in a place like Anarctica where the temperatures average in the -20s and -30 degrees F.

And meaningless in deserts where summertime temperatures average from the high 90s to low 100F most of the time.

This means that there appears to be an affect in urbanized areas seeing an increase in temperatures.

Ever walked down a ‘rip track’ of a railroad yard? It is 10-20 degrees hotter than everywhere else because of the metal structures.

When one wants to get cool, do you go right next to a building with a concrete sidewalk around it?

Or do you go to a nice open area where the wind blows and some shade trees are located?

Using temperature averages inclusive from urban areas that dominate the number readings as an average is misleading because of the urban heat effect. It is well known among engineers that man-made structures generate heat by design. This is why they use temperature expansion slots on roads and in construction.

Lot of people in a closed room and a few people in a closed room, which room will generate more heat? duh!

And of course, the Southern Hemisphere is absolutely refusing to cooperate with the temperature increases claimed by the alarmists. But you know, countries like South America don’t really count, they are not part of the globe. :)

    The debate is over.

Global warming is real. Fossil fuels use is causing or at the very least fueling it.

I cite the credentials of the deniers of global warming on this forum.

Hank Price aka HLP: Believes the Earth is less than 10,000 years old, Noah’s ark was real, and fossils were planted by God to test faith.

    Nathaniel: Ditto above.

Outlander: Says his nic is based on the fact that he sees himself not of this world, but the “next”.

And finally “Regular” in the latest incarnation of many nics. Thus a proven liar. A self proclaimed professional and expert in climate science as well as many other fields who currently lives on welfare with his sister.

America? I rest my case. There are still those who say the Earth is flat. There are others who say America never landed on the Moon.

The deniers of Global warming and humanities causation/contribution to it are at odds with all credible science and scientists. They are as Shakespeare said, “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” They are on their own agenda defending their own take on faith and their own ego.

The debate is over. It is time for action.

So Junior, you still have not brought any forth any science about Climate Change and continue with the personal attacks.

When are you going to start bringing forth proof Junior?

We all know you can make up things about me, just because you can.

It’s apparent here who is on the attack side Junior and it isn’t me.

And cosmos adds yet another post adding the “Multi-nic and liar” ad hominyms for what purpose?

Evidently, cosmos cannot make his case without character assasination.

cosmos is using a politically driven science where attacking opposition ideas are met harshly with discrediting and vicious attacks.

That’s not science, that’s low ball politics.

The debate is not over, unless one considers science to be dead.

    Multi-nic’d ‘Regular‘,

No… you instead prove my case.

Science is based on scientific methodology, not “ad hominems”.

Science is about the science, not the scientists.

    So again…

Anthony Watts and Steve McIntyre tried to show that “urban heat effect” made the GISTEMP data invalid.

AGAIN… do you have an update on their analysis?

    http://bigcitylib.blogspot.com/2007/09/deniers-rediscover-hockey-stick.html
“To be honest, this is starting to look like a great validation of GISTEMP.”

Multi-nic’d ‘Regular‘, please list some of the “man-made structures” in the upper northern latitudes on this map, where the largest amount of warming is ocurring,
    http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2007/Fig1_2007annual.gif

Climate models do not predict warming in Antarctica during the near future, due to the ozone hole, and circular wind patterns. Why does the multi-nic’d ‘Regular‘ falsely imply that Antarctica should be warming?

If the multi-nic’d ‘Regular‘ cannot rationally respond to the above points, he is either very ignorant about climate science… or he is a huge, “Kansas values” liar.

Closing the circle: my original interest in GISS adjustment procedures was not an abstract interest, but a specific interest in whether GISS adjustment procedures were equal to the challenge of “fixing” bad data. If one views the above assessment as a type of limited software audit (limited by lack of access to source code and operating manuals), one can say firmly that the GISS software had not only failed to pick up and correct fictitious steps of up to 1 deg C, but that GISS actually introduced this error in the course of their programming.

This Satellite shot demonstrates the urban island heat effect. i.e. (lights = heat(infrared) source)
    http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040822.html

The main conclusion is that micro- and local-scale impacts dominate the meso-scale impact of the urban heat island: many sections of towns may be warmer than rural sites, but meteorological observations are likely to be made in park “cool islands.”

How the Alarmists fiddle with temperature data to make it come out like they want.

When compiling temperature records, NASA GISS go to great pains to remove any possible influence from Urban Heat Island Effect. They compare urban long term trends to nearby rural trends. They then adjust the urban trend so it matches the rural trend. The process is described in detail on the NASA website (Hansen 2001).

    http://pubs.giss.nasa.gov/docs/2001/2001_Hansen_etal.pdf

i.e., the satellite image shows where increased temperatures have occurred and they are all near populated urban centers.

Proxy data for thousands of years has not been sufficiently digitized in order to reach a comprehensive solution of comparing modern day temperature readings with those of the past to show that the current warming is unusual.

The smoothing of curves and making data “fit” is bad science and statistical gathering. McIntyre has already shown that computer software was in error. What else can be found in error, with just this small microscopic view of the Alarmist’s data sets? Who knows?

The science is not settled and it appears that Alarmist Climate Science has many flaws and has not relied on the accumulation of observational data like they should, but making ‘make believe’ data sets from computer climate model predictions.

Chas, I find your frequent close telling, and wonder if anyone else does also.
By stating “Whatever you conceive God to be”, you are in essence saying that the god you are describing is changeable, is not eternal, is defined and created by man. In other words, imaginative, not real. I find that interesting for someone claiming to be a minister.

I also find it interesting you use the term “So Mote it Be”.

So Mote it Be is an archaic phrase meaning “So must it be.” It originated in the rituals of Freemasonry, and is common today in Wiccan and Ceremonial magick Rituals.
Very telling insight into your belief system.

    WS,

Paul (who was formerly Saul, a Benjimite and a Pharisee of Pharisees, who was persecuting Christians) met the risen Christ on the road to Damascus:

    Acts 9

    Saul’s Conversion

1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

Paul met Christ, while Paul was on earth.

Character is above the color of a person’s skin, especially in regards to presidential elections.

If an African American or Black American, either man or woman was running for the office of the president and stood for the best solutions for the USA, I would vote for that person, based upon the content of their character, not their skin color.

The weathering of the mountains pulled carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, causing the opposite of a greenhouse effect — an “icehouse” effect.

It also reinforces the notion that CO2 levels in the atmosphere are a major driver of Earth’s climate.”

This is a hypothesis that remains untested, makes no predictions that can be tested in the near future, and cannot offer a numerical explanation for the limited evidence to which it clings. No equations have been shown to explain the relationship between fossil-fuel emission and global temperature.
