I guess he’s saying that since the U.S. invaded Iraq, the price of gasoline should be a lot cheaper in the U.S. … an oversimplification of the complicated economics of the petroleum industry and international politics.

    JWink,

You’re right! I AGREE with you!!! It’s an oversimplification of complicated economics.

And who sold this oversimplification to the American people?

    Wait for it….

Look for Iraq to become a loyal member in OPEC,control output to keep prices high.

JWink is correct – Chris Rock oversimplified it. You see, in BushWorld having gotten control of the pancakes means that I can charge everyong else more for them. THAT was the key goal of MISSION ACOMPLISHED!

Jwink. Chris Rock is not saying that. He is only satirizing what some people in an unknown conservative new channel (3 guesses as to the name) said as one of their arguments for the war in Iraq.

I suppose it’s safe to assume that a leader of this “fair and blanced” news channel may have oversimplified back then.

Why are you interpreting satire (by a comedian) as a sincere statement?

    Iraq is still exporting oil.

You forget the downside – if the IHOP quit making pankcakes, what would the cost be?

And why does anyone care about the price of oil being high?

You Global Warming people want to encourage alternative fuel use and cut back on green house gases. I’m surprised you DemoRats haven’t introduced a plan to Raise the Oil Price.

Oh, that’s right, they have. New gas tax increases and no more drilling for oil in the US – THAT is the DemoRat plan.

Oh, the DemoRat plan also calls for converting our food (ie Corn) into ethanol.

How’s that workin out during this year of floods? $10 Corn vs $2 Corn 3 years ago. Food up some too, but who cares, America is too fat anyway.

BUT, the Dems did Ban Incandescent Light Bulbs!

Max, I think we know the impact of Iraq stopping their oil production (or the IHOP no longer making pancakes, if you wish to stay allegorical) After all, we caused that stoppage when we de-stabilized Iraq.

The democrats are not stopping oil drilling. For that matter, why didn’t the GOP bring this up when they controlled congress? Surely they had the wisdom and forethought to know that this was coming.

But you Republicans do have a decent argument. Drill now, pay less. Like I said yesterday. It might (emphisize MIGHT) salvage the GOP’s congress. Now all you have to do is sell the idea on your presumptive nominee.

Actually isn’t McCain against drilling in ANwar too, and the Presidents Brother who didn’t want to drill off Florida.

You are correct Mr. Paine. I think ANWAR is too far away. It’s too impracticable to be considered a real variable in this issue. Now as to why JEB would be against “drilling now and paying less”, you will have to ask him.

I suggest several generalities that are at play here.

    1) The major country (think U.S.) that runs out of petroleum first in the future is a sitting duck to eventually be invaded/occupied by another major country (think China, Japan, Russia, Indonesia) that still has petroleum. It seems short-sighted to use up our petroleum on the selfish premise it will bring down prices at the pump on a short term basis.

    2) Conservation of energy and water should be the top goals in the U.S. There are literally thousands of ways to cut back on energy usage. Turning off lights at night in government buildings would be a good start. Developing electrical florescent bulbs that do not use poisonous mercury in the tubes.

    3) I’m told petroleum technicians from China are flooding Africa and various middle eastern countries searching for oil. If the U.S. stumbles in the middle east, China will be there in the blink of an eye.

Republican candidates and Fox network talking heads sound like lobbyists for the oil industry — which, I suspect, many actually are. “Drill here, drill now, give us all your money and do what we tell you to do.” The oil companies have billions to spend on lobbying, campaign contributions, PR, and advertising. When they say they’re spending billions on R and D for alternative sources, I’m sure they are. To lock up the patents. First, sell more oil. Drill here, drill now and give us all your money.

Europeans get 60% better gas mileage than we do – even in cars made by American car companies…

“Across the board, European models get an average of 52 MPG versus 32 MPG for the US version of the same car. So the same car on European roads gets 60% better gas mileage than on American roads.”

    Conserve first, then drill.

This was not a war for oil. Get over it.

If Iraq is exporting oil, then their first obligation should be to start repaying the US for the billions we have spent for their war.

But the Iraqi’s Prime Minister Maliki is too busy running over to Iran to reassure their crazy president of Iran’s safety when the US puts our bases in Iraq.

Is that their gratitude for the US liberating Iraq? Bush has declared Iran our enemy but yet Maliki is protecting Iran?

Second, even the OPEC countries announced last week they were planning to meet and try to figure out what is going on because there is no justification for the high gas prices.

Somebody, somewhere, is playing the US for the fool. Is it the oil speculators? Is it the Bush Administration? Is it Maliki? Is it Iran’s crazy president? Take your pick – they are highly suspect.
