East High runners set great example

darfurWhat a great example nine current and former Wichita East High School students set in running from Wichita to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness about the genocide in Darfur. More than 200,000 civilians in Darfur have died since 2003, and more than 2 million have been displaced, according to the Genocide Intervention Network. In addition, a column by Nicholas Kristof on today’s Opinion pages tells of the how the Sudanese government has turned Darfur into a rape camp.

Obviously, running cross country isn’t an option for most people. But neither should be sitting back and doing nothing while thousands of civilians are raped and murdered.

Whenever great things are to be done, East High is doing them. As we all know Wichita East is not only the best high school in Wichita but it is one of the best in the country! Class of 77!

Congratulations to Wichita East High School students who continue to call attention to the ongoing tragedy in the Darfur region of Sudan in sub-Sahara Africa.

This past school year, a number of concerned Wichita East High School students sponsored a speaker from Darfur who had arrived in the U.S. by a roundabout pathway including an education in the Kenyan University. Kenya, itself, normally a beacon for education and peaceful life, indeed, a destination for tourism … suffered a tragic “civil war” during the past several months following a disputed election.

Here in Wichita and Kansas, we have a number of students and teachers from Kenya and various African nations who hopefully will learn good traditions about our nation to take back to their home countries.

I would love to do something…except we’re bogged down in an unneccessary war in Iraq and honestly, isn’t it someone else’s turn to step up to the plate?

We should build a coalition, Arm and teach these women that they can defend themselves without their men.

p-mama - AU countries have offered troops. They need logistics and air support. That is out best area of expertise. It would only take a few Warthogs to eliminate the Janjeweed. Then the AU can control the ground.
