Court green-lights casinos

casino1.jpgConcluding that “ownership and operation are flexible concepts,” the Kansas Supreme Court today gave the green light to the 2007 expanded gambling law and the four destination casinos planned around the state. That will be a huge relief to developers and locals in Sumner County and elsewhere who’ve been proceeding under the assumption that the law was constitutional. It also should be some comfort to state lawmakers looking for a cash source to offset declining state revenue. But even the court acknowledged the ambiguity of the setup: Under the state constitution, the state must control the “ownership and operation” of the casinos, yet they will be managed by private contractors.

I doubt that declining revenue has a much to do with Kansas’s current economic state of affairs as does increased spending.

There do not not appear to be any wise spenders in Topeka or D.C. from either side.

Too bad we have to depend on more gambling income to pay for our increased social programs. It goes like this, 1st you get say four from the state, then later four more, after that it’s one on every corner. Then we will be like say Montana.

Wow, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled that even though the Kansas Constitution as amended says the lottey shall be operated by the State of Kansas, this really means that gambling casinos can be considered to be “lotteries,” and their operation can be contracted out by the state of Kansas to private casino contractors.

Sounds like the Kansas Supreme Court just ruled that green is really orange and red is really blue.

What can I say. The people of kansas must be some of the most ill informed morons on the face of this Earth. How else can you explain what we have allowed our state government to become? I’m not just talking about the current “regime”. Mr “High and Tight” before her was as bad and in someways worse. We have allowed the JoCo republican elites and limosine liberal democrats to take total control of this state. They have packed the courts with their lackeys and yesterdays ruling is the result. I guess the most discouraging part of this is that the people have come to accept it. There seems to be no outrage or disgust with this ridiculous ruling. Where is the outrage? Where was it in 94 when the state supreme court made an equally bogus ruling that claimed that the people of Kansas when they voted in the lottery in 87 also gave approval to casino gambling? Where was the outrage when a state court judge ruled in 90 that the state school finance system was unconstitutional which led to the state taking over all education funding? Where was the outrage in 05 when this same senile judge usurped the legislature and ordered it to increase school funding? Or when a state supreme court justice was found to be having clandestine meetings with leaders of the house and senate on school finance in clear violation of the law.
I’m sorry, I’m not the smartest person on the block, but to try and tell me that privately owned and operated casinos overseen by a quasi public organization like the Kansas Lottery meets the State Constitutional requirement of “State owned and State operated”, is totally ridiculous.

That is your opinion and thank you for sharing it. I am happy that it is not your opinion that counts in this matter because I want a casino to go to besides the Indian ones in Oklahoma or the farther away ones in Kansas City.

Chooseaside, you obviously have decided to not choose a side, but rather to have it both ways. How can you nod approvingly at the trashing of our State Constitution, just because you will benefit from this decision this time? Put aside your own partisan beliefs long enough to see what the long term ramifications are to this. We have allowed a totally corrupt court system and Attorney General to run roughshod over this once great state and our constitution. Its people like you who only look at how you can benefit that have allowed this to happen.

Kansas is now the only state in the country to own and operate casinos.

If you think there is corruption in Kansas government now just sit back and watch what happens a few years from now.

Yes, I did choose a side. That they are right and I am happy with it and you are wrong and I am happy you are not the one that matters.

And sunflower5 you are wrong about Kansas being the only state that owns casinos. I forgot which ones do now but I think there are 2 others. Do a search on state owned casinos.
