Tiahrt protested House Dems, not moms

momtattooThe Washington Post described how Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, came to lead what appeared to be a House GOP effort to “reconsider” a resolution “celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother’s Day.”
After the resolution passed 412-0 Wednesday, Tiahrt rose and said: “Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote.” In a vote on whether to table Tiahrt’s motion to reconsider, Tiahrt was among 178 Republicans to vote “no” — appearing to some to be opposing the motherhood resolution. According to Sam Sackett, Tiahrt’s communications director, the procedural move was part of House Republicans’ efforts to draw attention to Democratic House leaders’ refusal to handle a massive supplemental military funding bill via the committee process. “Mr. Tiahrt is not against mothers, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, and the official vote shows that he supported the resolution,” Sackett told The Eagle editorial board.

But the way the gambit looked, the Post noted, “Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque predicament: They actually voted for motherhood before they voted against it.”

I can’t think of a better example of what Sen. Obama talks about - the politics of old - than this. What an absurd waste of the people’s time. what do we pay Tiahrt to engage in this kind of crap?

Why am I not surprised the Republicans would vote against mothers? Probably half of them hate their own mothers and they probably think mothers are part of the “vast liberal conspiracy”. Also they see suburban mothers as being sort of “socialist” in nature by joining such socialist things as the PTSA. After all mothers will often cram their own kids and the kids in the neighbourhood into their SUVs and vans and take the kids to soccer and ice cream. This is a very socialist act. The Republicans think that the kids should each stand as individuals and find their own way to soccer. And the Republicans hate soccer anyway because it is “unamerican”.

Kelly the whole thing is a waste of time and a meaningless effort, a resolution recognizing Mother’s day.
Is just another added to the list of wasted time resolutions the Congress and Senate have every week. Cheap and meaningless efforts that are meant to pander to people without it making any differences. Giving their official seal of approval, watching CSPAN there are times I expect them to recognize Humans breathing air or that the sun raises in the East.

When will they start to do the people’s business and stop mugging for the cameras?

I hated the way the “against motherhood” story was presented by the press… The REAL story is the way the Republican leadership will stoop to anything to obstruct confronting the issues, and constantly throws wrenches in the works to maintain the status quo…

Not that Tiahrt wouldn’t throw his mother and mine and yours under the bus to protect some powerful special interests….

There is no excuse for this kind of vote. Stop defending them Rhonda. If there was any question on how the Democrats can’t get anything passed with the obstructionist Republicans, this shows just how nasty they are. Put the blame squarely where it belongs.

But there was not a single word by Ms. Holman in defense of Mr. Tiahrt. I notice that you often mistake basic fairness for bias.

Way to use procedural tactics to try to send a message there, Representative Tiahrt. Too bad the “message” turned out to be your ignorance about House rules and your blindness to political optics.

So Tiahrt either voted against Mother’s Day (which the record shows) or he was just throwing a childish temper tantrum and mocking the institution of our government in order to merely waste taxpayer time and money for an unnecessary activity to make Congress less efficient.

    Linda,
The cons should be back tomorrow sometime. They all went to bid on the Iraqi Adult Video Store Franchise that’s being auctioned off at the Pentagon this afternoon. Todd bought the Iraqi Bordello Franchise yesterday and Satriale’s was given the Iraqi Pork Distribution Rights on Friday.

Tiahrt and his fellow Repukes showed that their irrational hatred for Democrats exceed any respect that they might have for their own mothers. Isn’t there something in the Bible about “Honor thy father and thy mother”?

    Hey JM,

Ask yourself this question. Why pass a resolution for a day already declared Mother’s Day?

    Isn’t that redundant?

  24. JMWalker
    Posted May 11, 2008 at 4:26 pm | Permalink

    Well, reg, how about this:
“On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, “Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother’s Day,” when Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), rose in protest.

“Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote,” he announced.”

It happened. Deal with it. He’s your boy.

I think we’ve shown remarkable self-restraint by not going for the obvious joke about “Regular’s” inflatable sex doll.

Then again, he might be referring to his “tradition” of taking his mom’s body out of the freezer ever Mother’s Day so they can have sex.

1)Is THIS the priority of the current Congress? They were late in passing the budget last year, and they should be working on the next budget NOW. What’s wrong with getting it done early?

2)Why does the press give a darn about this story? The only reason it should get any print, is to question the priorities of this current Congress.

Another thing that gets me about how stupid Tiahrt’s action is that he wanted peoples votes on record. It was a unanimous vote, so where was the confusion about how people voted?

I’m sure when it comes to voting himself another pay raise he won’t obstruct the vote.
