Public rejecting single-issue attacks

abortionprotestanti1.jpg“If there’s one issue that epitomizes the culture wars that have so deeply divided American politics over the last eight years, it’s abortion. That’s why those who benefited most from those wars are desperate to revive abortion’s single-issue virulence in this presidential cycle,” Los Angeles Times columnist Tim Rutten wrote in response to Robert Novak’s recent column claiming that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is a “pro-choice poster girl.” Rutten called Novak a “redoubtable right-wing hit man” who gets his dubious allegations from the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. But, Rutten argued, the public is rejecting this divisive agenda. “One of the salutary characteristics of this election cycle,” he wrote, “is the way in which voters concerned with war and a failing economy have rejected single-issue appeals for the traditional American ‘politics of remedy.’”

Expect Novak et.al. to broaden their attacks to include anything and everything they can lump into their so-called “family values” agenda. Even expect thrice-married philanderer Rush to join in.

It won’t be as easy with the multi-married philanderer candidate they’ve chosen. I’m afraid they’ll need to walk a careful line or their “family values” may slap them up side of the head. Or maybe this won’t bother them one iota since IOKIYAR. They do seem to have one set of expectations for the opponent and a differing set for themselves.

Operation Rescue, the same nutters who claim that Tiller is performing satanic rituals at his clinic, are the same people passing information to Novak. Only fellow nutters and the folks at the Wichita Eagle, find them credible.

Yeah Rutten, the single issue of abortion is so water under the bridge. Nobody cares about it on this blog!

As we speak, Tiller is removing the photos from his home office of Sebelius and he grinning as they exchanged the greased palms of campaign funds and the secret agendas on how to spike Phill Kline into the ground during an active investigation.

Damn, I’d buy tickets to see that - do they spike him head-first or feet-first?

Having been one of those single issue voters in the past, I have a feeling that focusing on all issue by the voters will leave both parties at a loss for sometime to say.

Can’t fault them for trying the tried and true single issue ploy.

I’m thinking when Rove was here, it was more of a strategy session for the party. I smell his stench hoovering over Ks. lately.

As if the Democrats ran on anything other than being against the Iraq war last election cycle?

We all have our single issues and nearly every candidate or party or person tries to focus on what is most important to them or what will give them the most electability.

Someone will try to find some issue to drive a wedge against those they oppose.

    That is politics….

We are firmly in the multi-issue society after nearly 8 yrs. of bush jr.
One issue will no longer do.

“As if the Democrats ran on anything other than being against the Iraq war last election cycle?”

Valid point - to which I would add two observations:

    1. It was of limited effectiveness, and

    2. In an ‘off-year’ election you have hundreds of individual races instead of one integrated campaign. It is difficult to establish a multi-issue approach for that.

Sez who? There are “one issue” people all over this blog. And you know who I mean.

Why on earth would they need to “spike” Phill Kline? He was doing a truly superb job of spiking himself!

    This is interesting…

I posted Rutten’s column yesterday in the “Poster Girl for Choice” thread and it comes back today as an official WE Blog topic.

Maybe it happens to others, but I seem to see a lot of my comments turned into topics that pique the interest of WE Blog editors.

    It’s kind of a hoot.

I’m so for abortion, it’s unbelievable! And I’m a republican. H@ll, I think they should force a parent to abort the child if they can’t show means to support it, or get non governmental help in doing so.

I’d even go as far as to say that if you raise a moran, it should be your duty to kill it! Kind of like an honor killing, but not for the stupid reasons the Muslims do it. Only for real important stuff, like listening to rap music AND living the lifestyle (I listen to it, but I know it’s not “real” and don’t adapt any kind of lifestyle around it)

“Post natal abortion”, that’s what we should institute in order to get ride of all the thieves, baby rapers, druggies and thugs.

Let’s all list good reasons for Post Natal Abortion, I’ll start us out:

1.) your daughter asks to have her curfew extended so she can go to her boyfriends “welcome home from jail” party.

    Semp,
I’ve got a better idea. Let’s put every kid on birth control (males the instant an effective one is found) and they don’t get to go off it until they’ve passed a comprehensive (possibly 4 yr.) course covering every detail of marriage and raising a family, and all the responsibilities entailed, including hands-on training in changing chernobyl diapers, and before and after pregnancy nude photos, AND they have a permanent, non dead-end job with a decent paycheck. To quote Old Amarante in “The Milagro Beanfield War,” “Nobody would do anything if they knew what they were in for!”
By the way, watch out about that talk of aborting morons- eugenics doesn’t work, and besides you’d end up eliminating a large portion of your republican base.
Having raised three kids, I understand your position on extremely late-term abortions. My own feeling is that a kid doesn’t become fully human until he leaves home. While I probably wouldn’t have aborted my kids as teenagers, the possibility that it might happen would have given me some much-needed leverage in trying times!
