    Racism is in America’s DNA.

The Constitution’s brilliance is its embodiment of the concept of compromise. It’s also our national curse.

It’s like the old saying: “Autocracy is when one person gets his way. Anarchy is when everybody gets their way. Democracy is when nobody gets their way.”

3/5ths of a human being is America’s ugly birth mark.

There is something I need to get off my chest, even though it’s trivial and stupid.
WHY are there so many handicapped parking spots in front of every store? What are the odds of THAT many disabled people showing up all at once?
Yesterday, I went to Pappa Murphy’s Pizza, where you can’t even park in front of the store at all because it’s only handicapped parking..I’d been chasing my grandson all day across parking lots and I didn’t feel like doing it again, so I parked BETWEEN two handicapped spots (where the lines are for the van) so we could head right into the store and buy our pizza as quickly and safely as possible. You would have thought I’d murdered someone…this “lady” confronted me and yelled at me about being rude, then some guy joined her and stated making disparging remarks to me. I finally lost my temper and dropped the “F” bomb (in front of my grandkids no less), after which I felt stupid and embarassed.
I’m I being the jerk? If a van full of wheelchair bound people pulled up and needed to unload so they could all order a pizza, I would have gladly moved my car. As it was, I felt like I was just tired and didn’t want to chase my grandson again to keep him from getting hit by a car.
Is this handicapped parking thing getting out of control…or am I in the wrong?

BTW, I DID lose control..I kicked the man’s truck as he was trying to escape.

BTW, in order to justify the parking spaces…perfectly healthy people are allowed Handicapped placards.

A hangnail is enough to qualify!

    Posted May 4, 2008 at 10:20 am | Permalink

    You kicked his truck?

I’d have paid serious money to see that!

And fwiw, I think it’s even worse here in my part of Virginia. For example, the YMCA has at least 12 handicapped spots right in front of the Norfolk branch I frequent. I’m sure they’re used daily (this branch has several pools, and I’m sure there are lots of programs available there), but they’re reserved around the clock! In fact, when I get there, late afternoon-ish, they’re always the ONLY open parking spaces. I too find this a bit frosting at times.

I wish we could find a way to guarantee a parking spot for the handicapped short of allocating space 24/7. Our current “hard allocation” solution is suboptimal for society as a whole.

I think they may have to take your bullets away when you get your CC, Mary.

No, this guy didn’t acouste me, he just wouldn’t shut up…maybe it’s a good thing HE didn’t have a gun!
Anyway, I apologized to my grandkids, after which I felt better. Maybe I need some downtime…when I’m tired I get angry a little too easy.
I still think it’s dumb that there are so many spaces reserved for the disabled…I have hangnails…maybe I should just get a placard!

  15. Posted May 4, 2008 at 11:52 am | Permalink

Don’t worry about your reaction to the handicap parking Mary, I feel the same way.

Although somewhat gimpy I don’t consider myself handicapped to the extent I need special parking. I still have two legs and a cane, so I can walk (albeit slowly) to where I need to get to.

Sometimes the old knee or feet give out and is the reason I use the cane for balance.

When I see a perfectly healthy person abusing handicap parking I usually go up to them with cane in hand of course :D

And ask them if they need any assistance getting into the store or loading their packages.

They usually either get that mad look or hurrily climb back into their car in a most athletic manner. :D

Maybe they need to alott special parking for grandmas with grandkids. I’m too old and out of shape to chase mine from the back of the parking lot anymore.
I’m very much of an advocate for the disabled…I just think the parking consideration could be done with about half of the handicapped parking we have now.
I love it when I take my wheelchair bound friend places, we get all sorts of special consideration.

I can sympathize with you being tired and cranky Mary.

But you WERE wrong to park in the handicapped spot. Even if just for a minute.

See? The thing here is, where do you draw the line?

First you park there for a minute and everybody is ok with it. Then other people start doing the same.

I’ll give you an example. Xmas eve a couple years ago. I saw this young buisiness type park his Hummer in a handicap spot.
And then SPRINT into Dillons! There was a cop nearby and I called it to his attention. But by then the guy was coming back. He had just run in to drop his mail. The cop let him off with a warning.

I think you see where I’m going. Before long, the spots for the handicapped are just sort of ignored. Not much the cops could do about it either if it were widespead like that.

Think about all the hurdles the handicapped face every day that you don’t even think about.

It’s not so much to provide close parking is it?

Now I WILL agree with you. There are relatives who abuse the placards. But sometimes? A person you might think looks perfectly healthy may really be hurting.

Err on that side huh? And be glad you have active, healthy kids that keep ya on your toes!

Mary I can relate, three grandkids all under five and each wanting to go their own way.

Its six of one half dozen of the other though, I have seen times that all the handicap parking is full. But the point is brought up some Doctors issue the script simply for someone that ask for it. It is abused sometimes such as one woman who’s husband was handicap so she drove his car instead of her own. Just so she could park in the handicap and not have to walk as far to go to work.

Side note: Gee and part of the reason I was fired was because I tossed my badge and scraper on to a self instead of placing it on it. The manager said I had anger issues! Now I wish I had kicked his truck!

Oh look depleted uranium damages DNA. Who says? The military.

Depleted uranium-catalyzed oxidative DNA damage: absence of significant alpha particle decay.
Miller AC, Stewart M, Brooks K, Shi L, Page N.

Applied Cellular Radiobiology Department, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, 8901 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD 20889-5603, USA. millera@mx.afrri.usuhs.mil

Depleted uranium (DU) is a dense heavy metal used primarily in military applications. Published data from our laboratory have demonstrated that DU exposure in vitro to immortalized human osteoblast cells (HOS) is both neoplastically transforming and genotoxic. DU possesses both a radiological (alpha particle) and a chemical (metal) component. Since DU has a low-specific activity in comparison to natural uranium, it is not considered to be a significant radiological hazard. In the current study we demonstrate that DU can generate oxidative DNA damage and can also catalyze reactions that induce hydroxyl radicals in the absence of significant alpha particle decay. Experiments were conducted under conditions in which chemical generation of hydroxyl radicals was calculated to exceed the radiolytic generation by one million-fold. The data showed that markers of oxidative DNA base damage, thymine glycol and 8-deoxyguanosine could be induced from DU-catalyzed reactions of hydrogen peroxide and ascorbate similarly to those occurring in the presence of iron catalysts. DU was 6-fold more efficient than iron at catalyzing the oxidation of ascorbate at pH 7. These data not only demonstrate that DU at pH 7 can induced oxidative DNA damage in the absence of significant alpha particle decay, but also suggest that DU can induce carcinogenic lesions, e.g. oxidative DNA lesions, through interaction with a cellular oxygen species.

    Mary,

When my wife had her car accident, I didn’t find it appropriate to get a placard since I was the one driving. Usually, I would pull into a handicap spot, unload, and then move the car into the parking lot. It was amazing how many times I was yelled at… but I would just calmly pull out the wheelchair and unload my wife and our month old son. Normally, they would walk away not feeling so self righteous.

I feel for the stores at some of the shopping centers. It seems strange how they normally place ALL of the handicapped parking in front of one store, and the other stores have none.

    Mary,

I had 4 kids in 10 years, 3 of them within the first 4 1/2 years, and I always said I deserved a handicapped parking space. Small children ARE a handicap. I haven’t parked in one of the designated spaces, but I can assure you that if I’d faced the same situation with my 4-year-old grandson in tow, I wouldn’t have hesitated.

Mary, you broke the law and for that I have little sympathy for you. Perhaps you would have had to park farther away but that would have been the correct thing to do.

As it is, infringing upon a handicapped unloading spot and then cursing like a sailor in front of your grandkids, you set a poor example of what an adult should act like.

It’s good that you apologized to the kids but don’t be surprised if a parking violation shows up in your mailbox. many people use camera phones or digital cameras to photograph the license plate of a vehicle that parks illegally and sends it to the authorities.

I’ve turned in dozens over the years and I will continue to do so.

My advice – get off your ass and walk. Do you think a handicapped person would not trade places with you in a heartbeat?

As the uncle of a handicapped child who needs to use the loading zone, I get very angry when I hear about rude people taking the spaces (for only a minute or two).

    Totally unacceptable. :(

You should have gotten a placard. Even if you are handicapped, it is a crime to park there without a placard SHOWING.

And no, kids don’t negate that, a four year old can walk just fine. I know, they sure run all over the place.

Mary, smile and ignore the self-righteous perfect people who always know best in every situation and there can’t possibly be any shades of gray in their life — all black and white and judgmental. You admitted it wasn’t a habit you make and that you’re sorry. You admitted to human mistakes. Guess some people never make mistakes.

You didn’t inconvenience a handicapped person!

Upward and onward, there will be another day. Maybe those most judgmental of you will face someone’s judgement. Maybe they already have but didn’t learn any lessons.

You offer nothing new, Mr. Boxlock. I wonder though why you didn’t accuse me of living in my mother’s basement. But it has struck me time and again how conservatism is the political preference of mean drunks, and how it appeals so many white males. It must be someone’s fault they’re riviting in Rivertown. And you and Rush and all your ilk tell them who it is; why it’s the libruls who are at fault. While they sweat out their miserable lives, people are lolling around on wellfare who have it better than they have, watching big screen teevees and driving late model luxury cars, thanks to tax and spend Democraps. Oh well, I know there is nothing I can do in a blog to change anyone’s mind about anything. However, it has been instructive. Before the internet I suspected there were a hell of a lot of people out there like you. Now I know it for certain. I’ll give you a little hint about happiness. Happy people are not mean. linda says: “You didn’t inconvenience a handicapped person!”

It’s this very attitude of “me, me, me” that has our society at an all time low today. Where is the respect for the law? Authority? No wonder our kids are running in gangs and cursing their teachers, this kind of ‘enabling’ attitude has a trickle-down effect.

Is it also okay not to stop at a stop sign if no one else is at the intersection?

Is it okay to cheat on your taxes if no one will find out?

Is it okay to copy your friend’s test if you haven’t studied?

Breaking the laws hurt all of us and, NO, it isn’t okay…even once.

I will continue to report any unauthorized vehicles who are in handicapped zones. I will report vehicles in fire zones.

Just because a handicapped person did not need to use it when Mary parked there doesn’t mean it’s okay.

The state of society today is sad. When people can’t even be bothered to walk a little farther to ensure that those less fortunate are provided with an easier method of access, I become very sad for our society.

It’s this kind of heartless and self-serving attitude that is exemplified by more and more people across our nation.

Go ahead. Make excuses for bad behavior. You’re in very good company. :(

The death of decency and integrity.

    Mary,

Sorry you had trouble with the parking. I think as the boomers age and become less mobile we will be seeing more handicapped parking spaces, rather than fewer.

I don’t want to be judgemental, but for me the handicapped space thing is a black & white issue. I don’t need one, so I won’t use one.

When my kids were little, if I was worried about them running in dangerous places, I picked them up and carried them. I also had a rag with chloroform on it handy, as well – just kidding on this latter, though I could of used one at times.

When I was stationed in Idaho Falls there was someone that would go around town and slice two or three tires on cars that were violating the handicapped parking.

People would call the police, give a report and then get ticketed for the parking violation. It pretty much stopped people from parking in handicapped spaces improperly.

    beber,
I am a conservative and I am a white male, thats the end of what you got right. I am not a “mean drunk”. I like living in “Rivertown”, and I don’t “rivit”. Sounds to me from your comments as if you don’t like living here assuming you do, and that you consider that to be a negative. What does that say about you.

Are you thinking about or listening to what you are saying? It’s difficult for me with your atrocious sentence structure, spelling and punctuation but I’ll try. I quote you speaking of conservatives, “While they sweat out their miserable lives, people are lolling around on ‘wellfare’(welfare) who have it better than they have, watching big screen teevees (what the hell are “teevees, you mean TVs?) and driving late model luxury cars, thanks to tax and spend Democraps.” That to a certain extent is exactly whats is happening, people on welfare, food stamps, and refusing to buy health insurance taking it free in ERs, driving better cars than I (which by the way I choose to drive for smart investment purposes) and watching big screen TVs paid for on credit and at the expense of their kids. Then getting handouts at taxpayer expense and generally gaming the system at other’s expense.

I don’t need or want your hints about happiness, you presumptuous, pompous, ass.

And no one is building a “Berlin Wall”. You being obviously history deficient, among other things, I’ll explain. The Berlin Wall was to keep people in and subjugate them. Southern border protection is to keep out the invading herds, drug dealers, and criminals at the border who are filling up and dumbing down the schools (good example right here in “River City”) driving hospital emergency rooms to close, costing the American taxpayer billions in welfare and social services and the same in penal costs. And, re-introducing diseases not seen in this country in a long while. Look it up if you’re intellectually able, the facts are clear and easy to find.
Those that are rowing this boat of a country and economy are tired of all the dead weight sinking it thanks to the entitlement mentality of the DemLibs and their dishonest, self-centered grab for political power by pandering to those who think they will be getting something for nothing. Which just doesn’t happen.
Look how hard the DemLibs fought ‘welfare reform’ over the conservatives attempt to get it passed, and once passed has been the greatest thing done recently to restore welfare recipients self-respect by forcing them to be self supporting and getting a job.
Wake up, nothing is free, and if someone has something, someone had to work for it, period. Conservatives simply feel those who work for it deserve it and those that don’t….don’t.
That shouldn’t be such a hard concept for you to grasp, but I’m not at all confident.
Bye jerk…got’a go labor, for not only myself but also those that want a free ride, thanks to the DemLibs. It that you?

Just commenting on this small snippet, people on welfare have healthcare insurance it is called “Medicaid”.

And a general comment: I am often amazed how some people think that welfare is such a good deal and that somehow people on welfare are getting rich off of the toil of others. Sorry, I know people on welfare and I don’t share your reality.

A smart friend of mine once said, welfare takes much more from people than it ever gives them. I am sure he was referring to self-respect one can acquire by doing things for one’s self. This same smart friend told me, “the more responsibility one assumes for one’s self the more freedom one has.” This friend was not a Republican, but he had their message honed finer than they ever will.

Man is the media not only fickle but they are getting positively Schizoid! The love affair with Obama is over. Watching “morning Joe” on msnbc within an hour they showed a video of Obama talking about the issues. And were commenting about how he was looking tired and was just rehashing old talking points.
Later they showed a video of Hillary and commented how revived she appeared and she was in touch with the voters and actually listening to them. But it was nothing more than Hillary repeating basically everything Obama had said!

There had that rash of talking heads on saying the summer gas tax relief was nothing more then a cheap political trick. And showed a poll that stated over seventy percent of those polled were not fooled by the political trick. Then afterward gave a glowing praise of Clinton and how she was touching a positive nerve with the voters and it was a smart move on her part. OK, you talk about how the gas tax relief was an obvious political trick to gain votes. That no one with half a mind was buying into it, then turn around and say it was a brilliant move on Clinton’s part and would be a vote getter!

So what they said was they think the voters are morons who can not see what is in front of their face!
I get that and thank you media for the vote of confidence in the American voter!

A wise man once said, “never loan money to someone that is too stupid to know when they have been insulted”.

TRENTON, N.J. — Residents are upset that Trenton police did not find a body floating in a canal for nearly 24 hours after the first report.

Police said they received the call about the body floating in the Delaware & Raritan Canal on Saturday afternoon. But, police say the call was not specific about where the body was and an initial search did not turn it up.

After a second call, searchers found the male body floating in the water on Sunday. Neighbors said a dog and turtles were gnawing on it.

The victim was not immediately identified. Police said the death is suspicious.

There was was a sign painter who was hired to paing on an existing stone wall, the announcement of the profession for the new owner of the building. Mr. Loch, an architect wanted the sign to be painted in bright white reflective paint, so it could be seen day or not.

The sign painter complied, but didn’t know how to spell architect, so abbreviated it instead.

Now, to the amusement of passerbys the knew sign proudly displays the name and profession of the building’s new occupant.

My 93 year old mom was visiting when my adventure happened. I was parked in a Dillion HC slot and wheeled her around to her side unloaded her, fastened her seat belt, put the chair in back and then got in the driver side. In the time it took me to put on my seatbelt after handing my mom her placard someone snapped a pic of my car. No placard, no HC tag. After getting a court summons to pay my $100 fine I had to get my mom who by this time was back in OK to send me a copy of the placard as well as a signed affidavit that she was in Wichita on that day. Then I took two hours off from work to go to court to present this ‘evidence’. I didn’t have to pay the fine but what a hassle.

Government Report Answers Who Lives, Who Dies in Flu Pandemic
    Monday, May 05, 2008

Should doctors be allowed to play God?

In the case of a flu pandemic — yes, say government officials in a new report.

Doctors know some patients needing lifesaving care won’t get it in a flu pandemic or other disaster. The gut-wrenching dilemma will be deciding who to let die.

Who will die in the event of a pandemic? The very old, seriously hurt, severely burned and those with severe dementia, according to an influential group of physicians.

The group has drafted a grimly specific list of recommendations for which patients wouldn’t be treated.

Sol is correct on the 3/5 issue.

For apportionment of US Representatives, the South wanted to count the slaves as 1 person. The North didn’t want the slaves counted at all. Why?

Because the North knew that if the slaves did not count for apportionment, the South would get fewer representatives then the North, and the North would eventually be able to ban slavery.

Thus, NOT counting the slaves was a way to give more Congressional power to the Free States.

    The compromise was 3/5.

Keep using that 3/5 rhetoric though in crying for your cause. Lies often work, and politicians on both sides are expert liars. Are you the fool to beleive everything your party says?

Glad you appreciated those comments, Boxlock. My friend is a psychologist in a prison. He has long pondered the questions of freedom and responsibility. He grew up dirt poor in a single mother home in Oklahoma. He went to work when he was either 15 or 16 as phlebotomist (a leech as he says). He explained to me that when you look like a hick kid and go into to people’s hospital to get blood from them, you learn to figure out people pretty fast.

A different friend, who is a psychiatrist, grew up on the rough, South side of Chicago. He tells me that on the south side of Chicago, it was a useful skill to figure out people quickly, too.

Just a couple of examples where hardships can be important learning experiences.

I love stories of people that in spite of hardship can through sheer self-determination and self-discipline not only rise above it but soar.
That is true freedom. I grieve for people that can’t and don’t experience that, and I loath those that intentionally inflict things on the unfortunate that keep them from realizing their potential, especially if it is done simply to make the ‘giver’ feel good themselves. I do concede that many don’t do it intentionally, but in a misguided attempt to help.

This is a great example of the democrats treating the citizens as children, dependent upon big government to feed them.

The libs believe we adults still have a three month summer vacation. Just like kids, they want us to look forward to a three month vacation. Why? Why are those three months important?

See, they don’t really have a solution to the oil crises – but they can treat Americans like children, and give the poor babies a break.

Polls show the majority of Americans are on to this vote garnering adventure by Hillary, and the democrats pushing it. Always good politics to have an “evil enemy” to unite us against and with her as the queen in shiny armor defending us poor folk.

USA Today is certainly no more of a “far-left” publication than, say…….Rolling Stone. But if Parkay wishes to avoid apoplexy, he’d be wise to avoid today’s edition – and its story about Hillary and Obama.

And there wasn’t a weight-loss suggestion anywhere to be found…………………….

I’ve just returned from my hometown, where my family’s (emotional) deadness didn’t prevent several comments about my weight. So the Songbird sorta got a sick thrill out of today’s headline story.

Now, if I were REALLY evil and just the worst sinner in the whole wide WORLD, I’d share a song I composed nearly two years ago. While stuck behind a slow-moving train one wintry morn, I took it into my head to revamp the lyrics to a certain song. A song which opened the movie “Halloween” 30 years ago. I can’t remember who sang it originally – but it pre-dated the Go-Go’s by several decades.

And what it took four of those b—-es to sing, the Songbird handled autonomously. With panache. And venom.

The subject of my derisive little ditty is deceased now, and I wouldn’t be caught dead (no pun intended) singin’ it here. Because this none-too-svelte man evidently had family and friends who loved him. And the Songbird felt remorseful.

So, yes, I’m a sinner, but I’ve got a conscience. Calling Mrs. Clinton a pig won’t stop abortion. It just cheeses people off.

Let us hope against hope that Parkay will experience a crisis of Christian conscience and refrain from certain manner of speaking. Just like Jesus Christ did so long ago.

Just like the Songbird is doing now……

Sol is correct on the 3/5 issue.

For apportionment of US Representatives, the South wanted to count the slaves as 1 person. The North didn’t want the slaves counted at all. Why?

Because the North knew that if the slaves did not count for apportionment, the South would get fewer representatives then the North, and the North would eventually be able to ban slavery.

Thus, NOT counting the slaves was a way to give more Congressional power to the Free States.

    The compromise was 3/5.

Of course, neufeld and morris could be staging this little kabuki theater to delay doing any more business this session, and to leave without a budget.

Gee, what would that mean? A special session this summer? AGAIN! On the taxpayer dime while neufeld and morris use the public treasury to sue the governor on behalf of Sunflower, a private corporation?

    Jesus WEPT!

Of course, delaying all business until the final day or a special session would also buy Sunflower more time to buy more legislators.

And judges. Election year, ya know?

McCain is already the nominee. No great amount of money or effort need be expended while the Democratic are competing to see who there nominee will be.

    Exactly American_Way,
The Republicans drafted it and Clinton knew it was impossible to argue with in that political climate and that it would be personally destructive and harmful to the Dems to do so.
Clinton wasn’t/isn’t stupid, he was looking out for himself more than endorsing the Republicans “Contract with America”
Here it is, an interesting read. Note number
    3. THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT below in the 2nd. list:

    REPUBLICAN CONTRACT WITH AMERICA
As Republican Members of the House of Representatives and as citizens seeking to join that body we propose not just to change its policies, but even more important, to restore the bonds of trust between the people and their elected representatives.

That is why, in this era of official evasion and posturing, we offer instead a detailed agenda for national renewal, a written commitment with no fine print.

This year’s election offers the chance, after four decades of one-party control, to bring to the House a new majority that will transform the way Congress works. That historic change would be the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public’s money. It can be the beginning of a Congress that respects the values and shares the faith of the American family.

Like Lincoln, our first Republican president, we intend to act “with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right.” To restore accountability to Congress. To end its cycle of scandal and disgrace. To make us all proud again of the way free people govern themselves.

On the first day of the 104th Congress, the new Republican majority will immediately pass the following major reforms, aimed at restoring the faith and trust of the American people in their government:

    * FIRST, require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress;
    * SECOND, select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
    * THIRD, cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
    * FOURTH, limit the terms of all committee chairs;
    * FIFTH, ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
    * SIXTH, require committee meetings to be open to the public;
    * SEVENTH, require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
    * EIGHTH, guarantee an honest accounting of our Federal Budget by implementing zero base-line budgeting.

Thereafter, within the first 100 days of the 104th Congress, we shall bring to the House Floor the following bills, each to be given full and open debate, each to be given a clear and fair vote and each to be immediately available this day for public inspection and scrutiny.

    1. THE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: A balanced budget/tax limitation amendment and a legislative line-item veto to restore fiscal responsibility to an out- of-control Congress, requiring them to live under the same budget constraints as families and businesses. (Bill Text) (Description)

    2. THE TAKING BACK OUR STREETS ACT: An anti-crime package including stronger truth-in- sentencing, “good faith” exclusionary rule exemptions, effective death penalty provisions, and cuts in social spending from this summer’s “crime” bill to fund prison construction and additional law enforcement to keep people secure in their neighborhoods and kids safe in their schools. (Bill Text) (Description)

    3. THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: Discourage illegitimacy and teen pregnancy by prohibiting welfare to minor mothers and denying increased AFDC for additional children while on welfare, cut spending for welfare programs, and enact a tough two-years-and-out provision with work requirements to promote individual responsibility. (Bill Text) (Description)

    4. THE FAMILY REINFORCEMENT ACT: Child support enforcement, tax incentives for adoption, strengthening rights of parents in their children’s education, stronger child pornography laws, and an elderly dependent care tax credit to reinforce the central role of families in American society. (Bill Text) (Description)

    5. THE AMERICAN DREAM RESTORATION ACT: A S500 per child tax credit, begin repeal of the marriage tax penalty, and creation of American Dream Savings Accounts to provide middle class tax relief. (Bill Text) (Description)

    6. THE NATIONAL SECURITY RESTORATION ACT: No U.S. troops under U.N. command and restoration of the essential parts of our national security funding to strengthen our national defense and maintain our credibility around the world. (Bill Text) (Description)

    7. THE SENIOR CITIZENS FAIRNESS ACT: Raise the Social Security earnings limit which currently forces seniors out of the work force, repeal the 1993 tax hikes on Social Security benefits and provide tax incentives for private long-term care insurance to let Older Americans keep more of what they have earned over the years. (Bill Text) (Description)

    8. THE JOB CREATION AND WAGE ENHANCEMENT ACT: Small business incentives, capital gains cut and indexation, neutral cost recovery, risk assessment/cost-benefit analysis, strengthening the Regulatory Flexibility Act and unfunded mandate reform to create jobs and raise worker wages. (Bill Text) (Description)

    9. THE COMMON SENSE LEGAL REFORM ACT: “Loser pays” laws, reasonable limits on punitive damages and reform of product liability laws to stem the endless tide of litigation. (Bill Text) (Description)

    10. THE CITIZEN LEGISLATURE ACT: A first-ever vote on term limits to replace career politicians with citizen legislators. (Description)

Further, we will instruct the House Budget Committee to report to the floor and we will work to enact additional budget savings, beyond the budget cuts specifically included in the legislation described above, to ensure that the Federal budget deficit will be less than it would have been without the enactment of these bills.

Respecting the judgment of our fellow citizens as we seek their mandate for reform, we hereby pledge our names to this Contract with America.

Well, well, well–looks like the Repukes have been breaking and entering, committing arson, and generally breaking the law to throw roadblocks into the investigation of stolen elections in Alabama, and Bush Administration political uses of the U.S. Attorneys.

“Break-ins plague targets of US Attorneys
    05/01/2008 @ 1:39 am
Filed by Larisa Alexandrovna, Muriel Kane and Lindsay Beyerstein

The Permanent Republican Majority Part VI

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – In two states where US attorneys are already under fire for serious allegations of political prosecutions, seven people associated with three federal cases have experienced 10 suspicious incidents including break-ins and arson.

These crimes raise serious questions about possible use of deliberate intimidation tactics not only because of who the victims are and the already wide criticism of the prosecutions to begin with, but also because of the suspicious nature of each incident individually as well as the pattern collectively. Typically burglars do not break-into an office or private residence only to rummage through documents, for example, as is the case with most of the burglaries in these two federal cases.

In Alabama, for instance, the home of former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman was burglarized twice during the period of his first indictment. Nothing of value was taken, however, and according to the Siegelman family, the only items of interest to the burglars were the files in Siegelman’s home office.

Siegelman’s attorney experienced the same type of break-in at her office.

In neighboring Mississippi, a case brought against a trial lawyer and three judges raises even more disturbing questions. Of the four individuals in the same case, three of the US Attorney’s targets were the victims of crimes during their indictment or trial. This case, like that of Governor Siegelman, has been widely criticized as a politically motivated prosecution by a Bush US Attorney.

The main target of the indictment, attorney Paul Minor, had his office broken into, while Mississippi Supreme Court Justice, Oliver E. Diaz Jr., had his home burglarized. According to police reports and statements from Diaz and from individuals close to Minor, nothing of value was taken and the burglars only rummaged through documents and in Minor’s case, also took a single computer from an office full of expensive office equipment.

The incidents are not limited to burglaries. In Mississippi, former Judge John Whitfield was the victim of arson at his office. In Alabama, the whistleblower in the Don Siegelman case, Dana Jill Simpson, had her home burned down, and shortly thereafter her car was allegedly forced off the road.

While there is no direct evidence linking these crimes to the US Attorneys’ office targeting these individuals, or to the Bush administration, there is a distinct pattern that makes it highly unlikely that these incidents are isolated and unrelated.

All of these crimes remain unsolved.”

    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Breakins_plague_Justice_Department_whistleblowers_0430.html

Great for your Repukes that you have election-stealing machinery in place, all the way up to a Supreme Court that knows what it’s supposed to do.

Republicans who defend this are scum. Those who pretend it isn’t happening are even worse.

    Political Mama,

You don’t have to be somewhere to understand how a gun works. They don’t just go off by themselves.

-The man shot himself, so obviuolsy he wasn’t practicing the rule of not pointing the weapon at anything you do no intend to shoot.

-There are not very many ways a pistol will simply fire without having the trigger pulled.
(So most likely he would have had to have pulled the trigger for the gun to fire)

I am not exactly sure how this proves anything for your case for more gun control either.

    Would you care to elaborate?

Max, I think Political Momma comes from a very sheltered life.

She does not realize that millions of Americans, have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, worked hard, and managed to be successful financially (which is really not the true measure of success in life).

There are many avenues toward financial security and a top level job. Some include just being the right person, in the right place, at the right time. Although skill levels and college prerequisites are fundamental – there are many in college and out of college who did it without a mommy and a daddy. Many did it with college aid in the form of federal, state, and private. Some (like dummies like me) earned the old GI Bill which helped. And then there is real strength in something called “networking”, using contacts.
Combo’s of much of the above, and some took one good road in life which led to another.

But you are delusional if you think most of the “successful” people in life got their through their parents wealth. Some made it INSPITE of their parents.

I’d guess all, if not the majority are where they are by way of lots of elbow grease – work.

BTW, if know these people there is one thing they all have in common: They are not whiners. They didn’t get ahead ever by whining about it.

PMom, how else would the gun just “go off”?

You can even drop modern firearms without a discharge.

So Pmom, show us the brilliant side of your mind and tell us how the cop shot himself in the foot without violating items 1, 2, 3, and 4 above.

    Max,

The amount of training you have doesn’t mean that you can’t be complacent one day.

I can believe that this man was trained in firearms, but the simple fact is that he obviously had a bad lapse of judgement.

I would like to see more information on what happened, but all the news outlets have the same exact word for word story that fox news has right now.

Nathan – can’t dropping a gun make it discharge? I was always taught to make sure the safety was on when going oevr a fence etc. (I’m referring to long guns, not ahndguns with that fence advice)

  157. MaxGrobnik
    Posted May 5, 2008 at 2:22 pm | Permalink

Oh I agree Nathan. Anytime you don’t follow all the safety rules, sh*t can happen.

Not knocking all the cops, but was making a point that we can’t expect the cops to be there at the exact second you need them. And not all cops are competent.

-There are many poor shooters out there who are cops.

-There are many times when you dial 911 and get no response or a slow response.

Yet some gun banners out there, would have us all be defenseless and at the mercy of attackers until the cops arrived.

Maybe Chas can explain how he will defend himself and his family with that baseball bat and bayonet, when the burglars/rapists/murderers have guns!

    Ben,

Yes, depending on the type of gun, the mechanical safties, it can go off if dropped.

Basically, the trigger simply trips whatever mechanism is holding the hammer back(or whatever is going to strike the firing pin) which will then cause the firing pin to be hit and which will then hit the primer of the round.

Depending on that mechanism, dropping a gun could cause the firing pin to be stuck.

With most firearms this is nearly mechanically impossible.

    Ben,

Also, hunters are taught to hand their weapon to someone else to cross a fence.

You should always maintain positive control of your weapon or someone else should.

There have been hunters who shoot themselves or someone else because they were crossing a fence, got hung up and fell and then pulled the trigger on accident.

    Shery,

Gun manufacturers can be held accountable for a defective product.

What they are not held accountable for, thankfully, is when someone uses their product to harm others.

Do you have an example of a gun which went off accidently, hurting someone, and the manufacturer was not held accountable?

Most times, if not nearly 100% of the time, people are to blame, not the gun.

Took initiative to get things done, without being told, to make productivity improvements, cross-train in several areas, etc…

Moved away from my home town to seek better job opportunities. Didn’t expect to have a job fall in my lap or be given to me. You need to look for it.

He became a woodworker and supported his family with decent factory jobs like at RobertShaw Controls. You know . . . the good manufacturing jobs we used to have before the CONs and the Clintons sent them overseas.

You have to break at least two of these very basic firearm safety rules to shoot yourself in the foot!

    1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

    2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

    3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about Walmart. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is shopping there now. And in many ways, the place has the feel of a good old fashioned Mexican Market. In Mexico, Walmart is upscale, and the real prices and deals are at the market. I’ve priced items at both places, and Walmart is almost always more expensive.

I think Walmart could treat its employees better. How much better would their sales be if more workers could advise and explain about products? And Costco, with career jobs, apparently is the lone competitor? Well, overall, I won’t bitch about Walmart.

I asked people what they thought of it in my old home town. “At least we can buy something,” was the general sentiment.

Not to beat a dead horse, but my bitch wasn’t about wanting to park in handicapped spaces…but about why there are so darned many of them. At the place where I went to get pizza, there were no places in the front EXCEPT for the handicapped spaces, and my only choice was to park on the other side and walk my grandkids across the parking lot..for the umpteenth time that day. I parked on the strips BETWEEN two handicapped spaces, so there was plenty of parking available for a disabled person should anyone have needed it. I work with the handicapped everyday, and I don’t have a placard for my car even though I often take them places, so we have to park like everyone else and I often wheel them from a distance to the store. It chaps my butt to see 20 handicapped spaces right in front of any store, and I’ve never seen a time when all the handicapped spaces were all filled (except at Walmart).
The Family Dollar and the Dollar General have too many handicapped spaces…Quik Trip has it just right with only two or three spaces per store.
I think too much of a good thing isn’t good. And if I ever caught you taking a picture of my car, I’d kick your car bumper, too.

Pmom, sudden interest in me all of a sudden.

Typical sad liberal philosophy, “nobody can work themselves up today”. BULLSH*T!

Various farm jobs, newspaper route, dishwasher as a kid. As a senior in high school, started in the file room (the bottom of the company)of a financial firm, part-time. Worked there thru college working my way up as fast as I could while working 30 hours/week and going to college full-time.

1st year in college I got a $200 grant and $500 student loan. After that first year, I made too much money ($10/hr) to qualify. Lived in a one-bedroom 400 sq foot “apartment” and paid my own way. During Spring breaks while my friends were partying in FL and TX (tuition paid by their parents) I worked full-time, as I did during summer and winter breaks.

Pmom, maybe you can’t do it, but just because you have a negative “can’t do” attitude doesn’t mean others are like you. Far from it. My story is not unique.

A young man working for me full-time worked his way up to Supervisor while attending college. He graduates this month and tests for his CPA this summer. He’s already landed a contract with a big accounting firm out East.

There are hundreds of stories like this that I’ve observed myself.

    What’s that Positive thinking poem?

The Man Who Thinks He Can!

    If you think you are beaten, you are;
If you think you dare not, you dont!
If you’d like to win, but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch that you wont.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
For out in the world we find
    Success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in the state of mind!

    If you think you’re outclassed, you are;
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself
before you can win the prize.

    Life’s battles don’t always go
    To the strongest or fastest man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can!

    ONCERN ABOUT THE STATE ECONOMY
As Kansas lawmakers work toward final adjournment, Senate leaders are saying they are getting nervous about the economy and the current level of state spending. Those jitters started sweeping through that chamber in the earliest hours of Friday morning when a slim majority voted to remove $34.5 million from the catch-all appropriations bill and bolster the state’s sagging financial cushion. Senate leaders said they also want to rein in more than $65 million in business tax cuts being considered by a six-member House and Senate tax conference committee.
Sen. Barbara Allen, an Overland Park Republican and Senate tax committee chairwoman, told the House members that senators wanted to draw up a new tax package that didn’t reduce revenue over the next five years. “We’re going to look at all the issues,” she said. Those included a $93 million reduction in the corporate income tax rate, a refund on sales tax paid by telecommunications companies on machinery they buy and property tax relief for seniors 65 and older.
Rep. Kenny Wilk, Republican leader of the House tax negotiators, said the Senate needed to remember that previous business tax breaks were helping the Kansas economy. “We have a very healthy economy, unlike the national economy,” he told Allen. During debate, senators, who are worried that the state’s budget might slip into the red later this year, gutted their omnibus budget bill. The six-hour debate began with a bill that increased the state’s $6.4 billion budget by $34.1 million. Shortly before midnight Thursday, a slim majority of senators approved an amendment that cut $34.5 million out of the bill. Early Friday, the bill was approved 21-18.
The reduction was authored by Sen. David Wysong, a Mission Hills Republican who had been warning lawmakers all session that the Legislature was spending too much money as the national economy was sliding toward recession. Wysong pointed out that the bill in its original form resulted in a projected $109 million reserve at the end of fiscal year 2009, or 1.7% of estimated general fund spending. He said that if state revenue declined over the next several months, that reserve level could trigger emergency across-the-board budget cuts by the governor and State Finance Council. “We can’t afford the current omnibus (catch-all) bill,” Wysong told his colleagues.
Some Senators, however, noted that the state would have had an additional $87 million next year if not for the state being tied to the federal income tax, which created an additional windfall for businesses on their Kansas taxes in addition to the tax benefits they receive from the federal economic stimulus package, a tax break for business expansions. Sen. Laura Kelly, a Topeka Democrat, noted that the Legislature has approved hundreds of millions of dollars in business tax breaks over the past several years.
Items cut by the Wysong amendment included about $27 million in disaster relief funds, $10 million for state universities, $4.7 million in child protective services, and $5.6 million for home- and community-based services for low-income elderly and disabled folks. The House had approved an omnibus budget bill earlier in the day that added more than $50 million in state spending.
Negotiations have continued work on the budget, while the other conference committee on tax tries to settle on a tax package. The main disagreement centered on the proposed reduction in the corporate income tax from 7.35% to 7%, which costs the state $93 million over five years. Unless that amount of cuts are made in state spending, that tax burden would shift to other taxpayers.
The tax conferees did agree to phase in, over five years starting in 2011, the refund of sales tax paid by telecommunications companies on machinery and equipment. The revenue loss over that period was estimated at $19.6 million. Senators wanted to balance those cuts with
$117.5 million over five years in revenue increases. Those would result from changing the way out-of-state companies are taxed, closing a loop hole.

You don’t get it Max and you never will. I DID do it, I know it can be done. It’s harder than hell though- I was literally 1 1/2 hours from walking down the aisle to get my diploma. And sometimes you cannot do it at certain times- I can’t do it now. Everyone has different circumstances. It wasn’t a program where you could slack off, married women were getting housekeepers just so they could keep up! You didn’t get to go to class and go home and do nothing. It wasn’t that kind of program. Probably 80 hours a week for school, plus 25 hours working on the weekend. I was the ONLY one in my entire class doing it alone. And look at what it got me. A lot of bills for nothing.
All because of some hateful teacher who LIED.

Liberals view wealth as a closed loop. There is only X amount of wealth and as long as those rich people have it, I never will.

Conservatives view wealth as an open system. There is always wealth to be had. All you have to do is work for it.

As long as you view the rich as having everything and your only way of getting any of it is to take it from then rather than earn it, you will live in poverty with your hand out feeling sorry for yourself. The perfect little liberal.

I consider it o be an open system. And, in some ways I tend to be ‘old-fashioned conservative’ like the Presidential candidate I backed in 1964. He warned about the dangers of the neo-cons and I agree with him.

Sure Junior, I’ll tell you how you can find yours.

Do what I did. Spend a decade overseas serving your country in military. Run five miles everyday to stay in shape. Give up any normal life because you never know when you will be called out in the middle of the night to go to some foreign country.

Of course Junior considers that welfare. Junior hates the military and everything it stands for, so calls it welfare.

I would like to see Junior state that in an undisclosed overseas location with a bunch of Marines around him.

Then we would no longer have to worry about the coward who lies about people and the coward that never shows up for meet up and then talks about people like he’s met them.

That coward is J R, aka Blue Jay, aka Junior, aka JBird. The lieing liberal.

Junior is ashamed of his country, he should leave and never come back.

I’m liberal in many ways, but that’s not my attitude, nor the attitude of most of my “liberal” friends. On the flip side, I know many people who are die hard, right wing consdervatives who don’t have a pot to piss in.
