Some choice quotes from the Wichita City Council’s discussion prior to voting 4-3 Tuesday for a workplace smoking ban exempting bars:
- “If this ordinance was a potato, it would be a mashed potato,†said member Jim Skelton (in photo), who voted “no.â€
- “Are we going to ban stupid people from driving? . . . We can’t save everybody from everything because there’s a couple of people that think it’s the government’s job,†said member Paul Gray, a “no†vote.
- “I’m always a little fearful when The Eagle agrees with us,†said member Jeff Longwell, an architect of the ordinance.

So how many of the liberals or conservatives were for this?
I want to put to rest that this is a liberal idea.
Smokers are drug addicted slobs. If they want to kill themselves, OK but they should not be allowed to have their drug addiction affect everybody else. Other people do not want to be assualted by their smoke or have to walk through the butts that the slobs so carelessly toss all over the place. Lord knows how many non smokers and children are killed every year by these stupid fools starting fires and wrecking cars when they drop hot embers while driving. Smoking should ba banned EVERYWHERE except in a private home. And cigarettes should be taxed at $5 a pack to pay for the healthcare of these fools.
Kev,
Do you have so little self-control you can’t choose not to go to those places that allow smoking. You’d rather have a mommy government take care of you because you are unable, or to self centered that you want that mommy to force others to bow to your wishes. Talk about butts, you’ll now find plenty to keep you company, (yea-if the shoe fits wear it), lying just outside the doors of many of those places you demand bow to your wishes.
I don’t smoke, hate it and avoid it always, but I’m mature enough to take care of myself without forcibly pushing others around.
We’ll see how you ’squeal’ when that mommy government spanks you by denying you something.
I used to smoke and I’m not for this foolish law because it shows the ever closing clutches on our civil liberties. If i were to frequent an establishment, it’s usually not because it’s smoke free, it’s because I enjoy the adult atmosphere and I likely have friends there. There are far worse things were can be spending our resources and taxpayer dollars on. How about banning those ediots that are chatting while driving. eliminating those perves who continue to target our women and children. And these very same people are wondering why no one wants to live here. And by the way it’s foolish people talking and texting while driving causing wrecks. Has anyone seen the movie “The Demolition Man” That’s what our society will be like it these people have it there way. What side will YOU be on??? I might start smoking again just to challenge you clowns.
P_Momma,
I think it does have something to do with liberal ideology. Conservatives believe in the individual, and individual freedom. Liberals believe in big government with government solutions to everybody’s not only needs but whims, at the expense of the individual.
Get over yourself Kev.
My councilman Jim Skelton voted correctly on this.
” Conservatives believe in the individual, and individual freedom. ”
Uh huh.
As long as those individual freedoms conform to religious beliefs.
Hey Kev,
What about the people who drink? I consider them to be “drug addicted slobs”. I don’t go where people are drinking. I don’t smoke, but if people want to smoke that is their right. If you don’t like it, stay away from places where there is smoke.
I think people who talk on cell phones in public are arrogant, self absorbed creeps.
When they get behind the wheel doing it, they can get people killed.
Ban the public use of cell phones!
“Other people do not want to be assaulted by their smoke or have to walk through the butts that the slobs so carelessly toss all over the place. Lord knows how many non smokers and children are killed every year by these stupid fools starting fires and wrecking cars when they drop hot embers while driving“.
Gee Kev can you pronounce the words “irrational projection”
Having picked up a retail parking lot, there are more dirty diapers, fast food wrappers, empty oil bottles and even soiled clothing that is more offensive and dangerous to walk through then cigarette butts. I would strongly suspect there are more people killed and car accidents caused by drivers using cell phones for talking and texting while driving then smoking. Most smoker if an receptacle is there put there butts in the receptacle then throwing them on the ground. They also tend to move away from doorways as long as it is not raining.
To be honest until this issue came up I was not aware that there was a restaurant left that still allowed smoking in Wichita. Certainly none I go to and even when I do go to one that does. I still go outside to smoke. You sound like the guy I encounter once outside of a Dillon’s, I was standing at the end of the building away from the doors. When I saw a father and son walking from the other end of the parking lot.
He drug his son in a wide ark through the parking lot, thirty feet pass the doors so he would be passing by me. Just so he could make the comment to his son. “(Huff) Some people are so rude to smoke where people have to walk to get into the stores!”. Of course my reply was “(huff) some people are so rude they would drag their child across a parking lot just to make a rude comment!”. A few moments of hateful glaring and it was over with.
I support your decision to not smoke, it is a habit that is best avoided. I agree there are some smokers are rude as well as non-smokers whom are no better. I smoke in only one room of my house and not in the same room as children or asthmatics. Often asking even in a room where others are smoking if anyone minds if I smoke. No brag just fact!
In reality it would be far more immediately beneficial for society to ban the use of cell phones in cars than to ban smoking in public.
LOL OMG its the end of days, a Democrat and a Republican agrees on use of cell phones in car!
How you doing this morning JR?
Personally I think it should be up to the business owners whether or not they allow smoking. And what is this new $250 license for? Just another way to dig a business owner.
WD, You’re right about the parking lots, what is with people and littering? I see all kinds of litter along the highway and rural roads, mostly cups, beer or liquor bottles and tons of plastic bags. I don’t know why, but maybe because I live near a stop sign people think they need to throw their garbage in my yard as they slow down and it realllly pisses me off. I find more liquor bottles than butts, and that’s scary.
I call on smokers to be considerate of others; stand well away from entrances and please do not throw butts on the ground, use the receptacle or put the butt in your back pocket until you can throw it away. Be responsible.
Oh, and btw…I have quit smoking in the past 2 weeks. I almost regressed and bought some when stressed, so positive energy sent my way are much appreciated.
A big well-deserved pat on the back, WichiWomn! It’s hard and you’re doing it. When I quit I found it wasn’t a decision I made once but overanover. And then I got fat and still ask myself why obesity is healthier than smoking? I’m not even working on that one yet.
But, WichiWomn, even this fat stuff has a positive - it plumps up the wrinkles smoking left!
Linda,
My sister-in-law once commented that she thought I looked younger than her. I told her that fat smoothes out the wrinkles. I thought she was going to die laughing. Yes, it’s a constant choice at this point, more like a mantra. One bad habit at a time, grasshopper.
But ya know, life is not about arriving in a well preserved unused body, it’s about slidin’ in sideways with a drink in one hand and chocolate in the other, yelling “Woohoo!! what a ride!”…..
Life is good!
Why should anyone vote against something that protects the MAJORITY just because a MINORITY feel they should have the right to pollute the air of those around them…where is the logic in that? Anyone who thinks that way is pretty damn selfish and rude.
And I can’t believe you gave me grief for parking BETWEEN two empty handicapped spots for less than 5 minutes…what a hypocrit you are, JR.
The fact is that the number of people who smoke actually decrease in states that have smoking bans…when it gets inconvenient enough, more people actually quit smoking..and that’s a win/win for everyone.

Many of them are drug addicts but by and large they are not slobs. You can go into a bar and not drink and those who do will not blow beer in your face or throw their cans down on the floor when they are done. Not only that but a normal person can have 3 or 4 cans of beer on Friday night and not touch it for another month. You ever see a nicotine addict do that? I have more respect for Heroin addicts. At least they keep their habit to themselves and don’t do it in public.
City7 Airs Smoking Ban Discussion

City of Wichita on Thursday released a revised broadcast schedule for the City Council smoking ban vote.
The broadcast is running daily on City7, or cable channel 7. The stand-alone, two-hour program will air at 8 p.m. today. It will regularly air at 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Monday and Saturday until further notice.
I just will never believe what fools smokers really are. I mean, they are like the stupidist form of life there is. No other intelligent animal willingly ingest a poison that will kill them. Look at the smokers- they go out and spend $3 or more a day every day of the week- to kill themselves! How friggin DUMB can you be? And then they demand the rest of us be “tolerant” of their addiction! I say HELL NO to that! Zero tolerance for smoking in public! And if I owned a business, I would never hire a smoker either.
I have seen smokers go without food- and even let their kids go without food- so they could buy cigarettes. Really pathetic!
I repeat.
Get over yourself Ken.
And Mary? I am the least hypocritical person I know. I also am a very considerate smoker.
I just tend to treat others how I am treated.
And the handicapped parking issue?
YOU knew you were wrong. That is why it got you so angry.
If you thought you were in the right, you would not care.
And you are re evaluating your assesment of me? Well this political season IS doing that to people.
I can’t trust myself to go through that first six months again and I’m old and have enough old-age problems without smoking, but after reading these comments I feel like lighting up. Smoking isn’t something easily stopped! Congratulations to those who are quitting, hang in there to those who still smoke. When you decide you will give quitting a try I wish you luck and strength to get through it. It’s hard! It can be done when you decide it’s time.
