I will admit that this might be a big hoax.

However, I am absolutely certain, if it is proven that Michelle Obama did make a "Whitey" comment, that you will be here, on this Blog, defending her words.

"Nope, if Michelle really did make a “Whitey” comment, it is serious."

And that is a HUGE if, Rossell. That is quite the website you referenced - one of the posters claimed that Barack Obama was a past member of "Fruit of Islam."

I thought we had more than our fair share of right wing kooks here - Osama Obama and all that - but those folks are crazy.

I will be waiting to see the proof of such a statement from Michelle Obama, but I won't be holding my breath.

Regular
To say that we can forgive Michelle Obama for her racism is, perhaps, true.
To say that we want a person like Michelle Obama to be "First Lady" is something else, entirely.
Michelle Obama has preached to young people that they should "reject middle class America!"
Michelle Obama has said that she is, only now, with her husband running for President, "Proud to be an American"??
Nope, if Michelle really did make a "Whitey" comment, it is serious.
You can deal with it in your own way, Regular.
I, too, am likely to forgive the comment, on a personal level, even if it is true.
However, it would be absolutely devastating to the Obama campaign, regardless of what you or I might think of such a comment.

To say that we can forgive Michelle Obama for her racism is, perhaps, true.
To say that we want a person like Michelle Obama to be “First Lady” is something else, entirely.
Michelle Obama has preached to young people that they should “reject middle class America!”
Michelle Obama has said that she is, only now, with her husband running for President, “Proud to be an American”??
Nope, if Michelle really did make a “Whitey” comment, it is serious.
You can deal with it in your own way, Regular.
I, too, am likely to forgive the comment, on a personal level, even if it is true.
However, it would be absolutely devastating to the Obama campaign, regardless of what you or I might think of such a comment.

Franklin,

I think you are confusing hate and what is lashing back at the source of the pain.

Most arguments, especially those involving great distress or emotion are caused by someone that has been hurt. People will lash out because they have been hurt and sometimes say hurtful things themselves.

As far as the purse snatching go, these are single incidents. They can be encapsulated and dealt with because the effect is transparent. They can identify the attackers and be confident in calling them thugs, regardless of skin color.

Racism can be a subtle assailant. It peeks out windows and behind doors, categorizing and judging who people are. It quietly puts up invisible barriers preventing access and steals from your wallet because it has denied you opportunity to succeed.

It doesn't happen once or twice, it happens daily. It happens from people you never met or will ever know. The scars it forms never go away, but re-opened on each occasion.

The purse snatchers can be arrested, tried and if found guilty convicted.

Who will convict the subtle racist? Who will point their finger and identify them? How can you identify someone who was never known?

How can we know the 'content of their character' if we cannot get past the color of their skin?

Regular
Sorry, I disagree.
If Michelle Obama used the term "Whitey" it matters, and it will sink Obama.

Her personal experiences do not give her license to hate.

My mother was mugged, beaten, and had her purse snatched, TWICE, by young Black men.

Nobody would ever think to call my mother a "racist" --- she sees the criminals as individuals who acted badly, and does not blame an entire race for these crimes.

If you allow personal experiences to justify hate, we never really get past the hate, do we?

Is the rumor true?

Did Michelle Obama make a “Whitey” speech, from the pulpit of Rev. Wrights Church?
------------------------------------------
Don't think it's relevant Franklin. Most Black's that I've known are silent on the issue, but have their own ideas on the suppression they've suffered in the U.S.

I used to play a lot of basketball as a hobby when I was younger, so hung around black, hispanic, white and other races a lot. Full court, pick up basketball tends to loosen the tongue up a bit and liberaters one's inner feelings - heh.

Anyway, I learned more about race relations than any time in my life, because people were more 'honest' about their opinions. Regardless of what was said on the court, when we met each other in more formal places, the conduct was professional as well as 'normal' adults would partake in.

I've also had the displeasure of being around white racists of all flavors. From those who make the occasional ignorant remark to the dangerous white supremacist type. Oh yeah regarding the latter, those nutjobs do really exist.

I do not know what it really feels like to be abused in the form of many types of racism that exists for people of color, but do know that it exists and the frustration as well as the pain must be unimagineably maddening to deal with it.

I rememeber traveling to Chicago as a young kid with my parents on a trip. I was shocked to see white and colored drinking fountains and white and colored restrooms. I asked my dad why they were there and he just said, "that's just the way it is."
I asked him why the same thing didn't happen where we lived and he said, "blacks stayed to themselves where we lived."

It took me many years to understand the implications of both. However, although the signs desinating must have been extremely painful to deal with, the covert type of racism that permeated most of the U.S., the "they stay to themselves" attitude must have been maddening and even more painful because on cannot identify it nor have a control on it that is effective.

Having grown up in an integrated society I don't hae the full experience of segration, but still have witnessed the effects.

The segregration mindset still exists, it is subtle and it is dangerous. This mindset describes a convenient excuse for whites to categorize Blacks before they even know them. This is still a sad part of our society that will still pre-judge.

So if Michelle Obama had a 'Whitey Speech' in the confines of her own church, then I understand her pain and frustration.

Sometimes the truth is painful and although radical rhetoric is never fully understood by those who are flicted with the pain of racism, the message is necessary.

It's like someone saying "aren't you putting on a little weight" or "your language is repulsive." No one wants to hear a critique of themselves, but who will say it?

The only thing I would advise for people of color when they make these type of speeches is not to use the same method of devisive words that were used against them as it lowers them to a substandard argument.

However, it may not be for me to say, I wasn't the one who experienced the pain.
