John McCain gave a major speech Monday in Oregon highlighting what he would do to fight climate change. It’s not a popular issue with the GOP base, but McCain is courting crossover Democrats and independents, a key swing vote that could help him win in November.
He’s clearly more proactive on global warming than President Bush — and he alone among GOP primary candidates backed specific targets for reducing greenhouse gases.
That took some political courage.
But as the Washington Post notes, McCain’s overall record on the environment is more complicated and mixed, with votes against greater fuel efficiency for autos and higher renewable energy standards for utilities.

Perhaps McCain will ask Sebelius to be his Vice President. They can go around the country together shutting down coal plants.
“green” == “supports high gasoline taxes”
The anti GW folks here now have no one to vote for?
ahhh….. the irony of it all
More paint on the evil republicans as smog loving, industrial pollution promoters.
Truth doesn’t matter in efforts to protray the dastardly reds as tree smashing, frog squashing monsters.
http://www.rep.org/
Doncha love the way the CONs go right from “catastrophic global warming is a myth” to “global warming is happening, but it’s not our fault” in the same paragraph; nay, in the same sentence.
Comes now McCain saying, “we’ve got to stop global climate change,” and the CONs blink myopically like cows in a coma and go back to chewing cud.
It’s so easy to be a CON. Just stop thinking . . .
Went to trade in my 2003 hybrid Honda Civic for a newer model. Since Honda and Toyota still have the highest rated “GREEN” cars for fuel economy, operation cost, and reliablity, I was suprised to see the IRS no longer includes them in the Tax Credit for buying alternative fueled vehicles.
Less fuel efficient, less reliable, but more expensive American made auto’s now get the credit.
Oh well, at least the State of Kansas still provides a credit for the greenest cars!
http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=176409,00.html
The CONs can’t bring themselves to criticize McCain for speaking the same language as Al Gore.
Ditto for George W. Bush.
Surprise, surprise, surprise.
Are we supposed to keep petrol prices artificially low (supported by tax breaks, subsidies and massive military efforts worldwide) in order to support our poor efficiencies and wasteful ways?
While Europeans drive 45mpg high tech diesel automobiles, we give “small business” owners tax write offs to buy a Hummer for their “business use.”
How many years have the Republicans fought increasing gas-mileage standard increases. “We shouldn’t be telling the car industry what cars to build,” they cry.
Well yes you should.
“The CONs can’t bring themselves to criticize McCain for speaking the same language”
Now why would a CON be critical if what he says makes sense?
“We shouldn’t be telling the car industry what cars to build,” they cry.
The Republicans just want to let the market decide what kind of car to sell. When we stop buying gas guzzlers and start buying high mpg cars then things will happen the way they are supposed to in a capitalistic society, not by govt. telling them what to do!
I think there should be incentives, but there is something very wrong if govt. decides mpg’s. If a car maker keeps putting out hummers or hummer like vehicles and people buy them, well them let it be. But it is the companies that innovate and take the market in another direction that will eventually thrive! Why else are the big 3 american car companies losing money!
“Republicans fought increasing gas-mileage standard”
Don’t kid yourself. The 2007 Energy Bill which the democratic congress applauded – does NOTHING for CAFE standard for almost two decades. It increases the MPG CAFE standard (fleet average) to 15 MPG LESS than automobiles are getting today. And since it will be the year 2020 before the average reaches 32 MPG, it will be another ten years before older gas guzzling cars leave the roadways.
If Toyota and Honda are producing automobiles in 2008 with 44+ MPG, where do you think THEY would have been by the year 2020? Now, we gave them an excuse to slow down improvements.
Why should they? They are beating the pants off US Automakers already. Waiting lists for foreign huybrid cars as gas reaches $4.00 a gallon on it’s way to $5.
Meanwhile, congress provides BIG BUSINESS cover, to once again – not improve MPG.
Gas went up another 15 cents this weekend. Where do you THINK it will be by the year 2020?
Not to mention the Energy Bill provides breaks for production of less efficient ethanol. The tax breaks will be paid for by consumers buying the gas which averages 4 MPG less efficiency (so you buy more), higher food costs, and a huge drain on precious water resources!
So pat yourselves on the back as you blame the “evil” republicans. But democrats are on the same payroll with the UAW, the Big Three Automakers, and an entire industry related to auto production and sales.
Heck, if the government stayed OUT of the CAFE/MPG issue we would be better off. Congress DELAYS improvements. Competition is what is causing improvement as American producers try to “catch up”.
The best thing that can happen for those TRULY concerned about the environment – is $5.00 a gallon gasoline. Mass transit is reporting growing numbers already!
I want to hear what mcclueless is going to do about the corrupt govt. in Iraq that we’re propping up for the next 100 yrs.
McBush’s voting record on environmental matters speaks for itself. He basically has none. I would call his “speech” on the environment nothing more than shilling for votes. Another politician using his position to lie to the American people.
================================================
McCain has missed every major environmental vote this Congress.
“Besides championing legislation to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions,” the Journal adds, “Sen. McCain has opposed the administration’s call to open parts of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling, citing the refuge as a natural treasure on par with the Florida Everglades and the Grand Canyon in his home state of Arizona.”
The Journal paints McCain as a maverick among Republican rank and file on environmental issues, in an article that is best misleading. While McCain has championed legislation to regulate greenhouse gas emissions in his speeches, he hasn’t voted for it. And while he’s opposed drilling in the Arctic, he also refused to support a ban on drilling in a 2005 defense appropriations bill.
The article also fails to mention that McCain ranks last among the 535 members of the current Congress in a rating by the League of Conservation Voters.
McCain has missed every major environmental vote this Congress, according to an analysis by the League. His League lifetime record is just 24 percent. This compares with 86 percent for Obama and 86 percent for Clinton. Obama and Clinton ranked 67 and 73 percent in the League’s most recent report.
“McCain was the only member of Congress to skip every single crucial environmental vote scored by the organization, posting a score lower than Members of Congress who were out for much of the year due to serious illnesses–and even lower than some who died during the term,” a release from the Sierra Club noted in February.
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Revealed_McCain_has_missed_every_environmental_0512.html
Obviously, his “shades of green” has nothing to do with the environment.
Shades of Green as in ‘green back’?
Sounds like McCain is walking a compromise line that will appeal to a lot of Americans. A lot of conservatives don’t agree with his stance on global warming and global warming activists don’t think he is green enough. Middle America voters can show their concern for the environment without being associated with a bunch of wacked-out liberal activists.
Yup Amway, I heard that mass transit usage is up Nationwide by about 20%.
You think those wunnerful Europeans drive small cars and use mass transit because they are much kinder people and more concerned for the Environment? BS.
In Europe gas has been high for years – It’s the Economics of the Market that steers human behavior away from personal gas-hog vehicles to shared vehicles and less convenient mass transit.
It’s not just the evil Republicans in America that drive SUV’s and gas hogs and refuse to carpool or use mass transit.
You Liberal Environmentalists should stop the cry baby routine. High energy prices is driving EXACTLY the behavior you have been asking the Government to MANDATE! (Because you have no self-control and are not capable of helping yourselves – without the Government telling you what to do!)
Don’t believe it. If McCain gets elected expect him to cave in to the furthest-right elements in the Republic Party. Don’t forget, back in 2000 the governor of Texas ran as a moderate and even talked of the need to deal with carbon.
Mark my words – Obama will promise Energy Credits to provide MONEY to the POOOOR so the POOOOR can continue to drive their SUV’S and gas-hog vehicles, and the POOOOR won’t have to participate in saving the planet.
Energy Credits for the Poor. Sign-up for more welfare now!
(Clark, there goes your balanced budget! Oh well, you didn’t really care anyway.)
“Heck, if the government stayed OUT of the CAFE/MPG issue we would be better off. Congress DELAYS improvements. Competition is what is causing improvement as American producers try to “catch up”.”
I don’t think so, amway. The auto manufacturers fought tooth and nail against every safety feature, like seat belts and air bags, as well as every smog control. It was congress that pushed hard enough to make them all mandatory.
People don’t buy cars in order to protect the environment. They buy cars that protect their wallet.
The rising cost of fossil fuels is a REAL crisis. Candidates for presidentt need to be emphasizing the need to change the paradigm in which America operates. America can not sustain current living conditions at future energy prices.
McCain is a politician (surprised?). Yeah me neither. Taking the lead on global warming is only possible when oil is $4/gallon and going to 8. The high cost of energy and our dependence on it is the crisis, NOT AGW.
Is this the kind of president you want? One who “says” but never “does”? That’s a question for all citizens, no matter their party.
So McCain talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk. Tell me something new about him.
I saw a spot on the news that said the number of arsons/thefts for large vehicle owners has increased significantly as owners try to collect insurance.
Also true for houses/arsons when facing foreclosure.
You get what you vote for. So keep on voting Republican.
“so the POOOOR can continue to drive their SUV’S and gas-hog vehicles”
Why Max, how do you expect the poor to pick up their free cheese and welfare checks?
Big car payments bring down their expendable income, further qualifying them for more goodies.
Not sure if the FCC tax on telephones helps pay for their cell phones, cable tv, or internet service yet.
“clane” declares –
“The Republicans just want to let the market decide…”
Uh-huh.
The “market” has pretty much established there’s a customer demand for crack, for whores, for crack whores, kiddie porn, and driving while intoxicated.
How dare some people have the audacity to infringe on the rights of people in the crack, whore, crack whore, kiddie porn, and DWI industries!
According to real crime TV shows, there’s a market for murder-for-hire! How dare those socialist-commie-liberal-pinko-democrats stand in the way of those noble market-driven capitalists!
amway and max,
God (or a democrat) help the poor soul in need of help, because neither of you have a soul.
“You get what you vote for. So keep on voting.. ”
Actually what your reporting Phantom is fraud. It is called C-R-I-M-E. These cases should result in criminal trial and punishment.
Has noting to do with a political party. Unless you are making excuses….
Which I completely understand, coming from a democrat.
Another “straight out of my ass” post by MonkeyHock 10:10 a.m.
“because neither of you have a soul.”
Soul? Walker, are you suggesting “soul” should have a role on our government?
Why, that’s almost a religious statement.
Democrats were well aware of the activities purported to cause global warming during the Clinton-Gore administration (1992-2000)
However, their response to $35/barrel oil was of course to lobby OPEC to raise oil production.
Raising oil production yields lower prices yields more consumption yields more global warming? At $35/barrel, we are concerned about price when the future of our planet is at stake? What hypocrites! How on earth can democrats blame republicans for AGW when we have Peace Prize winner Gore who as Vice President was content to watch his Sec of Energy kiss up to the OPEC to raise production when oil is only $35/barrel?
If Clinton-Gore-Richardson really believed that fossil fuels were the cause of AGW, why were they lobbying for more production of the stuff while they were in power?
The answer is that oil was still “cheap” and even those who “believed” in AGW still did not have the cajones to make the unpolitically popular move to encourage reduced consumption. The only thing that decreases oil consumption is oil prices (which is determined by supply and demand).
Conclusion: Why continue to banter about something that has not even shown itself to be a reality? No consensus is needed to witness the rise of gasoline at the pump. Candidates should address the real issue that WILL make people change. $8/gallon gasoline is coming and the earlier politicians wrap their arms around this reality, the better off we will all be.
Belief in AGW has done nothing to reduce oil consumption (Ref the entire 8 years of the Clinton administration for proof).
=============================================
U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson underlined mounting international pressure on OPEC to raise production.
“The markets around the world, the European Community and Japan are very clearly insisting that there’s not enough oil on the market to bring the (price) stability that is needed,” Richardson said on Wednesday.
Greenwashing McBush:
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Greenwashing
“Greenwashing is the unjustified appropriation of environmental virtue by a company, an industry, a government, a politician or even a non-government organization to create a pro-environmental image, sell a product or a policy, or to try and rehabilitate their standing with the public and decision makers after being embroiled in controversy.”
“Don’t believe it. If McCain gets elected expect him to cave in to the furthest-right elements in the Republic Party. Don’t forget, back in 2000 the governor of Texas ran as a moderate and even talked of the need to deal with carbon.”
yep. And he also ran as a uniter, not a divider.
Kinda like someone running now. And the result of this “uniter vs divider” claim has been about as good as bush’s.
“Democrats were well aware of the activities purported to cause global warming during the Clinton-Gore administration (1992-2000)”
Didn’t Clinton also dip into the strategic oil reserves? The conclusion was there was a very minor impact on the cost for fuel? Cost us more to refill it later at higher prices.
“It’s not a popular issue with the GOP base, but McCain is courting crossover Democrats and independents, a key swing vote that could help him win in November.”
So… mcsame doesnt worry about his base. He can reach out to crossovers.
And obama? He cant even unite his base.
And tell me again what obama is going to do to reach out to potential crossovers?
Oh yeah, he’ll say “hope and change”. And throw “the gays” under the bus.
Anything else he’s going to do to court crossovers?
Oh yeah, he’ll say “I’m not bush”.
He owes John Kerry royalties for copyright violations.
McCain can give a pretty speech on how he is going to do something but given his record he is a do nothing candidate. Bush spoke about how he was going to regulate carbon emissions and how we are addicted to oil but his actions show that he did absolutely nothing.
McCain is merely playing the same game as Bush. McCain never even signed onto his buddy Lieberman’s climate change bill. I expect the old windbag to give a lot more promises and do nothing. Heck, McCain is too busy trying to protect Czechoslovakia from the Soviet Union.
“McCain can give a pretty speech on how he is going to do something but given his record he is a do nothing candidate.”
I thought obama was the “pretty speech” candidate?
Is mcsame butting in on that corner of obama’s market?
“McCain can give a pretty speech on how he is going to do something but given his record he is a do nothing candidate.”
Obama may give a pretty good speech on bringing about Change, but given his lack of a record, we can imagine endless Change we want him to bring about.
I imagine a world where there are no Republicans and the Democrats are all united behind a wonderful leader.
Snap! back to reality.
“Obama may give a pretty good speech on bringing about Change, but given his lack of a record, we can imagine endless Change we want him to bring about.”
I suppose if you don’t look at his record then you won’t see one. The League of Conservation Voters gave him a 100% rating for 2006 and a 95% for 2005. It went down to 67% during 2007 mainly for a lot of missed votes because of campaigning.
On the other hand McCain received a 0% in 2007, a 41% in 2006, 56% in 2005, 36% in 2004 and a whopping 6% in 2003. Compare the two records and Obama is the pro-environmental candidate and McSame is merely espousing the same Bush rhetoric about being an environmentalist but not voting as one.
“The League of Conservation Voters gave him a 100% rating for 2006 and a 95% for 2005. It went down to 67% during 2007 mainly for a lot of missed votes because of campaigning.”
Says you. Maybe his rating went down because he’s already pandering to the wingnuts? Because he knows his supporters will present the false choice of “vote for obama or else”?
Maybe all those missed votes just show he’s really more invested in his campaign for president than representing the folks who elected him in the first place?
Isnt that what you and others were whining about with brownback?
IOKIYAAD
Besides, why look at past records. I thought obama was all about the future and not the past?
His future plans for the environment? Oh yeah, the standard answer is “go to his website”.
That oughta bring the voters in droves.

MH,
What were you doing in Regular’s ass? Do you need any help? A call to 911, perhaps?
The Eagle sure didn’t waste any time getting John’s current stand on global warming on the blog. There is no global warming and our puny emissions does not make a difference. Who and what can control the weather. Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. We can control pollution that we generate, that I believe. When politicians of all parties get involved in saving the world hang on to your pocketbooks.

===============================================
Not really, amway. Just pointing out how you two would walk on by someone in need. Nothing to do with government, and everything to do with a good Samaritan. But you wouldn’t know about that, would you.
McCain is not the only candidate addressing campaign issues that voters care about. Obama does it all the time.
However, the MSM is just ignoring these speaches from Obama and we don’t hear about them since everyone knows that its “all in the website”, right?
However, we are flooded with soundbytes of Obama discussing his views on hick people with guns, and on how Jeremiah Wright is an “uncle”…
I wish the MSM would pick up on all the policy statements he is making.
Oh yeah he doesn’t actually make THOSE statements, they are too important to be discussed at campaign stops. Statements of this nature are best left safe within the confines of the website.
We’ll have to re-write the history books. The next great leader will be the one who lets his website define what his plans are.
From what I’m reading, the republicans, looking through their rose colored glasses as usual, deny: the Cuyahoga River ever caught fire, that there is such a thing as smog, tobacco kills and there is mercury in fish, caused by man-made pollution.
They are also loosing their eyesight, due to their keeping their collective heads in the sand. I guess the phrase, “pounding sand”, must mean trying to get through to any republican:-)
“how you two would walk on by someone in need. Nothing to do with government, and everything to do with a good Samaritan. But you wouldn’t know about that, would you.”
Walker that’s where you got me wrong – and lumping all conservatives into one basket is wrong too.
If I saw someone in need, I’d stop what I was doing, reach down and help them up.
If a democrat saw someone in trouble, your FIRST response is, “WHY ISN’t THE GOVERNMENT HELPING?”
You would then hire someone to work for the government to research the problem.
You would then pay a lobbyist to get congress to apropriate funding for it.
You would then hire bureaucrats to give out the funding and maintain statistics and documentation.
You would then argue and enact annual COLA for the government program.
And when it gets too expensive: YOU WILL BLAME CON’s FOR OUR HEARTLESS SOULS CUTTING IT.
“From what I’m reading,”
Walker you have reached conclusions, labeled those conclusions as republican, without any facts.
Where are you getting all that? Can you provide me a cite/link/ to posts to cover all your dogma?
If not, I will have to lump you into my own group of similiar posts without substance.
” Nothing to do with government, and everything to do with a good Samaritan.”
And therein rests my point and you help me make it.
Nothing to do with government means “souls” and “samaritans” do not belong in government.
Government should not be collecting hard earned money from working individuals – and giving it to not working individuals.
Government does not exist to serve as the redistribution of wealth center of operations.
The U.S. Senate voted on Tuesday to suspend oil deliveries to the country’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve until crude prices fall below $75 a barrel, repudiating the Bush administration’s policy of boosting the stockpile at time of record oil and gasoline prices.
Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama voted to halt future oil deliveries. Republican presidential challenger John McCain was campaigning and missed the vote.
Separately, the Senate rejected a broader Republican energy measure which in addition to stopping oil deliveries to the reserve would have allowed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off coastal states where energy exploration is now banned.

==================================================
Do congressmen have the requisite intelligence to understand the implications of a graph of the price of oil over time? Here’s a hint: From left to right, the price goes up. There are “corrections”, but the trend is clearly that oil is becoming more expensive. It is currently at $127/barrel. Waiting until $75/barrel oil to come again is like Waiting for Godot. Good luck with that future Americans! (myself included).
The SPR will not see another drop of oil this cheap.
“Maverick” McCain should have voted no. But he’s is too busy pandering away his maverick credentials.
“Do congressmen have the requisite intelligence”
No. If it feels good, they do it.
Like taking oil out of the Oil Reserve. It “sounded good” to the candidates, so they pushed it.
WE PAID to buy the oil which went into the salt domes the first time. Of course oil was probably $35 or $40 dollars a barrel at that time.
So, if the feel good politicians have their way, and they release oil from the strategic reserve – WE WILL PAY again to refill the reserves. Only now we will PAY for oil three times the amount WE PAID the first time!
“If” this is a short term spike in prices, and if the price is expected to come back down, I tend to agree we should fill the reserve using the buy low principle.
But $75 a barrel? Is congress out of touch with reality? Do they have visions or dreams? Do they live in oz?
No wonder we get no serious energy policy. Can’t drill more because they don’t see a problem.
“And when it gets too expensive: YOU WILL BLAME CON’s FOR OUR HEARTLESS SOULS CUTTING IT.”
Exactly!

Gee, you don’t like it when confronted with your own tactics? Sad!
Listen to outlander’s words of wisdumb:
“Middle America voters can show their concern for the environment without being associated with a bunch of wacked-out liberal activists.”
In other words, when Gore says it, he’s a “wacked-out liberal activist.” But when McCain says it, he’s just a normal guy and he’s right.
Okay, thanks for clearing that up.
Idiot.
You have nothing JMWalker. No facts. Your post becomes scroll over material.
““Maverick” McCain should have voted no. But he’s is too busy pandering away his maverick credentials.”
How does one get “Maverick” credentials voting with the Republican party the vast majority of the time? McCain is only a maverick because he calls himself one and the corporate media repeats it like it’s the truth.
I’m no Ron Paul fan but he is a maverick when it comes to differing from the Republican party. Olympia Snowe is probably more of a maverick than McCain is.
Climate models overheat Antarctica incorrectly

Shame on those damned computer models!
I used to work as a R&D support engineer to a lot of Ph. D. scientists, and this happens to a lot of their models, not just for climate.
“(Clark, there goes your balanced budget! Oh well, you didn’t really care anyway.)”
Still waiting to see your economic/balanced budget package, Scroll Over. You have yet to produce anything other than revenue-cutting tax plan combined with pie-in-the-sky spending cuts that ignore mandatory spending requirements.
If you are just going to throw stones, Max, give it up – you ain’t got nothing.
If you would like an intelligent discussion – provide some reality based facts.

So, the calculations that they said all along were the most uncertain are shown to be a bit imprecise. But the rest of the globe (about 90%) models well. Not bad. And, as noted, they will use the observations to refine their models.
Not a single CON can explain why when Al Gore talks about catastrophic global warming, he’s an alarmist, careerist crackpot . . . but when McCain says it, it’s just prudent measures.
Remember from now on, when Hank prints his anti-global-warming screed of the day, just substitute “John McCain” wherever Hank has written “Al Gore.”
