Getting facts on illegal immigration

immigrantsGood for the joint Legislative Post Audit Committee for green-lighting a study this week of the impact of illegal immigration in the state. The study, requested by state Rep. Nile Dillmore, D-Wichita, is needed to inform any future state legislation on illegal immigration. It will assess the costs to the state for social services due to illegal immigration, the revenues or other benefits to the state (such as taxes paid), and the effect on the labor market. If the frustrating debate on illegal immigration this session has proved anything, it’s that the state should take action carefully, based on facts rather than fear.

It would be interesting to know if the Hispanic folks that were involved in recent traffic accidents (train and motorcycle) were U.S. citizens.

It would be interesting to know that Businesses larger than 50 people have to report publicly how many on their payroll are not U.S. Citizens.

It would be interesting to know how many people accessing subsistence, housing and child care programs offered by the State of Kansas are U.S. Citizens.

It would be interesting to know how many local non-indigenous, non-citizen people are treated at medical facilities through-out the state.

It would be interesting to know how many non-citizens attend our local public schools.

Yes, a detailed statistical analysis would be helpful.

The cost of illegal immigration? Horrendous!!!

The Federation for American Immigration Reform notes that:

    • Between 40 and 50 percent of wage-loss among low-skilled Americans is due to the immigration of low-skilled workers.

    • An estimated 1,880,000 American workers are displaced from their jobs every year by immigration

    • The cost for providing welfare and assistance to these Americans is over $15 billion a year.”

    • The net annual cost of immigration has been estimated at between $67 and $87 billion a year.

The National Research Council, part of the National Academy of Sciences, found that:

    • The net fiscal drain on American taxpayers is between $166 and $226 a year per native household.

    • Even studies claiming some modest overall gain for the economy from immigration ($1 to $10 billion a year) have found that it is outweighed by the fiscal cost ($15 to $20 billion a year) to native taxpayers.”

    • In 1997 that the average immigrant without a high school education imposes a net fiscal burden on public coffers of $89,000 during the course of his or her lifetime.

    • Illegal aliens have cost billions of taxpayer-funded dollars for medical services.

    • Dozens of hospitals in Texas, New Mexico Arizona, and California, have been forced to close or face bankruptcy because of federally-mandated programs requiring free emergency room services to illegal aliens.

    • Taxpayers pay half-a-billion dollars per year incarcerating illegal alien criminals.

The list could on almost endlessly. Open border immigration is bad policy.

DEA style punishments for anyone who hires illegals.

If you are found with even the smallest amount of drugs, the DEA can take everything you own. We need much the same for those who hire illegal immigrants.

What do they think Kansas is going to be uniquely different than the rest of the country with respect to the cost/benefit ratios.
    Dumb!!! Stupid!!! A LIE!!!

    Regular,
My comments about the “Dumb!!! Stupid!!! A LIE!!!” for those wanting another study does NOT apply to you.
I know you already know the result of a study and would simply use it to convince those who are the ones advocation for not enforcing the laws.
I don’t believe in spending money to ‘re-invent the wheel’ and there is plenty of evidence now to get serious about enforcing immigration laws strictly.

Blue Jay…why stop with the DEA type enforcement on the employers who hire them? I’ve always though the only way to end the problem of illegal immigration is to put that kind of stricture on everyone who does business with them. Rent them someplace to live? Lose the property you rented them. Cash their paycheck? Lose the store, bank, etc. where you cashed it. Sell them a car? Lose your car business. Sell them food? Lose your grocery story or restaurant. Provide them medical care? Lose your hospital, clinic, etc.

Let’s not just place the burden on the businesses who hire them, let’s place it on everyone. If we’re going to crack down and make them truly unwanted, then crack down on EVERYTHING!!!

We need a study to determine if Immigration Laws should be enforced.

Let’s study gun laws and see if they should be enforced too.

How about income tax laws, maybe we need a study to see if tax laws should be enforced.

Murder, we need a study to see if it’s really important to enforce murder laws.

Let’s just eliminate all the laws then. And we’ll be back to only the Constitution! Hooray!

(Y’all deadbeats will still get your welfare, but I won’t have to pay taxes anymore! And if you need more money – Rob a Bank!)

Yup, that’s what we need, MORE NEW immigration laws. More laws that won’t be enforced.

Did we study the existing laws before they were passed, to see how much enforcement would cost?

Maybe we should have a study on the study process.

    Reggie,
“It would be interesting to know if the Hispanic folks that were involved in recent traffic accidents (train and motorcycle) were U.S. citizens.”

Now why should that be interesting? we have plenty of accidents already involving citizens. Immigration status is most likely not a significan factor in traffic accidents.

    Boxie,
•An estimated 1,880,000 American workers are displaced from their jobs every year by immigration.”

And yet the unemployment rate has been hovering right around 5% for years, the rate most economists say is necessary to keep a lid on inflation. With the latest inflationary trends, maybe we need a few more illegal immigrants!
Pass more laws? There are some areas where laws simply cannot be adequately enforced, and to try to fix those problems with more draconian laws only engenders more disrespect for all law. We should’ve learned that lesson a long time ago.

I agree with the study. It is needed, and would tend to separate the bs from facts. Then a comprehensive set of enforceable laws could be generated. That would be a good thing for Kansas.

The study is only going to reflect that illegal aliens are:

    1. Not taking our jobs.
    2. Not using revenue resources (schools/social).
    3. Not using our hospitals.
    4. Are contributing to the tax base.
    5. And when you stick em, they bleed red just like the rest of us.

O.K., get on with it. Get the fear factor delay working.

    Then come back into session:

    1. Direct our cops to apprehend the illegal criminals.
    2. Stop any subsidies for higher education/in state tuition.
    3. Strength the laws and PUNISH EMPLOYERS who hire them.
    4. Stop any welfare/social assistance for these criminals.
    5. Turn all of them over to the INS/HLS/ICE.

Not a matter of fear. They are here illegally. They are coming in greater numbers because our surrounding states have gotten tough on them.

What don’t you understand about illegal?

But nice political delay to take the heat off our legislatures who DO FEAR not getting reelected.

    Immigration Absurdity

The top issue on the minds of Kansas voters at the beginning of this Session was clearly that of illegal immigration. WE demanded we deny public benefits to those illegally in our country. WE demanded an end to in-state tuition for illegal aliens. WE demanded an end to our catch-and-release approach to law enforcement. And WE demanded that businesses stop hiring illegal aliens.

However, it looks like the Kansas Legislature has stuck its head in the sand again – and refused to do much about it – other than falsely to claim progress.

Caving into the pressure from businesses and welfare groups, both the House and Senate passed varying versions of nearly-toothless reform. Let me explain.

First, the Senate bill. It does very little — but that is more than nothing. Unfortunately, some of the most rigorous proposals were eliminated – but at least the denial of illegal alien access to most tax dollars remains.

But the House bill is likely to worsen the situation. Not only are businesses not part of the solution any time soon either, the House included language that potentially opens up more welfare benefits to illegal aliens than even allowed under federal law.

For the first time, Kansas would be creating a new right for illegal aliens state financed medical care, no questions asked.

Kansans deserve better – much, much more must be done. But the tone-deaf Legislature just can’t seem to listen very well on this issue – but that is what elections are for… Unless major changes are made to these bills during the Veto Session, illegal aliens will have once again evaded the wrath of Kansas citizens.

Below is a summary of some of the absurd immigration provisions:

    · In-state tuition subsidies will continue for illegal aliens – in clear violation of federal law. Meanwhile, the Senate refused to allow nearly 70 brave ROTC Cadets to have access to the same in-state tuition rates. Hmm…illegal aliens deserve taxpayer help, but not the young men and women who have already committed to four years of military service?

    · The bill requires these illegal alien students to file an affidavit with a new Illegal Immigration Enforcement Division in the Attorney General’s Office stating that the person is working toward citizenship. Yes, that’s right. These illegal aliens must report to the very office supposedly tasked with stopping illegal immigration!

    · Besides, this affidavit to work toward citizenship is simply legal fiction. Those illegally in our country can not even begin the citizenship process until they return to their home country – and can never legally work here.

    · Refuses to allow local law enforcement to inquire into the immigration status of those we arrest for crimes – for we just might learn the extent of the criminal problems associated with illegal aliens. Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio would be persona non grata in Kansas.

    · Lack of law enforcement cooperation between federal and state authorities will permit the development of sanctuary cities.

    · Continues to allow businesses to take a tax deduction for the hiring of illegal aliens.
    · Claims of fines or jail terms for employers who hire illegal alien workers is simply not true. The provisions in the bill only permit a civil contempt of court charge and are essentially unenforceable. Additionally, they likely preempt federal law – and will not withstand legal challenge as a result. I predict absolutely no employer will be fined or serve a day in jail under these provisions.

    · Penalizes unions up to $2,000 for having illegal aliens as members – meanwhile, no fines for the employers who hire these illegal workers.

    · Continues the don’t-ask-don’t-tell approach to many welfare benefits. The Senate rejected my amendment to require proof of lawful presence for all government benefits – instead we just take the word of the applicant.

First, the Senate bill. It does very little — but that is more than nothing.
    ———
Doing this little is NOT better than doing nothing.
Doing little, but passing something will only lull part of the electorate into believing it is meaningful. Lawmakers can come back to their districts and preach to the uninformed that they addressed the issue. Made the “hard decisions” as they like to term their do nothing pandering to business and the illegal alien lobby.

The problem with sealing the border is that there is really no way to do it effectively. If someone wants to get through it, they’ll find a way.
I had a friend many years ago who, back at the height of the cold war, crossed a couple of elecrified double-fenced and heavily mined borders to make it from Latvia into Poland, and then to Germany. He wanted out bad enough to do it.
If your family were starving, you’d probably want to take them where the work is, and you’d find a way to cross or find a way around damn near any barrier along the way. It simply doesn’t work to seal a border in the face of that much motivation to survive. There are only two effective ways to eliminate the motivation: bring our economy down to their level or bring theirs up to our level. Take your choice!

The choice we want to make is obvious, but the choice they make is the exact opposite. Unless we act, our economy will soon be at their level, not vice versa.

    usaproud4567,
Now why on earth would they want to hurt the economy that they depend on? Truth be told, the economy is far more endagered by this stupid war than by immigrants.
Runaway deficit spending on the Viet Nam war triggered the double-digit inflation we saw in the ’70’s and early ’80’s, and since nobody in Washington seems to have learned that lesson, we’re doing it over again! Immigration, even in large numbers has only helped the economy grow. That’s History.
