Ethics optional in Congress?

fosellaThe list of members of Congress in ethical messes gets longer, yet nothing seems to happen to these guys. The latest addition is Rep. Vito Fossella (in photo), R-N.Y., whose drunken driving arrest led to revelations last week that he fathered a daughter, now 3, outside his marriage. So far, he plans to stay in Congress. And why not? Congress is where you’ll still find Sen. David Vitter, R-La., who learned last week that his link to the late “D.C. Madam” won’t even be investigated by the so-called Senate Ethics Committee; Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, despite pleading guilty related to a Minneapolis airport restroom sex sting (though he’s retiring after this term); and Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., despite being indicted in a bribery investigation (he’s even been re-elected since).

These people need to have the hightest ethical standards since they play a roll in the future of this country. What type of examples are they setting for the people of this country by cheating on their wife and family? What else are they doing behind our countrys back? If you are not going to obide by good ethical values the get out of office or get thrown out!

What do all of the Congressmen in the story have in common? The “R” after the name! You know the party of “family values”!

    What Democratic names, ReguLiar?

Actually, the story was too kind. The guy didn’t just father a child–he had two families.

    It was polygamy.

He believed in “family values” so much, he decided to have two families at the same time . . .

And I guess the “D -La” is a typo?
Poor Ronda, the left see you as the Eagle’s right-wing verse of a Kansas Rush L. And the right see you as Move-on-dot. org’s local reporter. Messenger, lay your head on the block!

Washington D.C. has become that joke about the Dallas Cowboys. The team had to stop the practice of the huddle. Most of the team being on Probation and not allow to associate with other Felons. The question whether their actions effects their duties as elected officials is the deciding factor.
How does the latest having a mistress and a baby out of wedlock effect his duties as a Congressman?

I wonder why posts that are “awaiting moderation” are never reviewed? I can’t figure out why they are flagged. I’ve even removed all links and still get flagged.

Is it the Eagle or the blog operator that is responsible? EDITORS?

We elect some hum-dingers, don’t we!?

Does running for public office draw the dregs or do we manage to choose the worst?

Maybe it’s what happens to an average person once they get into office and part of the system?

It would be interesting to see if the incidence of UNlawfullness and IMmorality is higher among elected officials than the general public.

outlander, there are certain words (including the name of the state our current president hails form) which trigger that “awaiting moderation.” No rhyme or reason to it and you’re right that they never are moderated.

    Oh, let’s see…

Let’s start with Senator Feinstein who was asked to step down from committee after showing her Husband’s company preferential treatment in getting multi-billion Department of Defense contracts.

Or the Congressman, William Jefferson and the freezer money…

Let’s see, Congressman Joseph A. “Joe” Sestak, Jr, who was found supporting, attending campaign fund raisers of an agency, CAIR, that has known terrorist ties and is an apologists for terrorist’s attacks.

    the list goes on…

Paul Morrison, the former Kansas AG also entangled in harassment charges as a result of an affair with a subordinate, is a Democrat.

Elliott Spitzer, the New York governor and former New York AG who was frequenting call girls while prosecuting similar illegal prostitution rings, is also a Democrat.

The fact is that when people are given power, some are not going to be able to handle it properly. Doesn’t matter what party, race etc… One is just as susceptible as another. Where there are people involved, there will be moral failures.

Point is: Both parties have their respective closets to hide in, and congress has done little, if anything, to investigate or correct the problem. That would take real Americans doing what should be done, and from what I read, there are few, if any, left in Washington. Just a capital full of bloviated, senile old hacks looking for a lifetime retirement check, dem and rep.

The real problem with congressional ethics today is that according to the religious right, immorality is only about sex, and anything else goes! Considering how many of our congressmen couldn’t get it up with a bottle of Viagra, most compensate by acting morally upright while looting the public trust without a qualm, scruple or care.
