And wouldn’t a promise to appoint her be just as motivating to the GOP base?

Prospect of Hillary Clinton on the Supreme Court? Now that would certainly energize the Religious Right to jump on the McCain bandwagon, wouldn’t it?

I’m trying to think of the last time a successful nominee for Supreme Court made the cut without serving as a judge first. Just thinking in practicalities here, folks.
I can’t think of one. Not saying it hasn’t happened, just can’t think of one.
But there’s nothing in the Constitution that makes it mandatory.

Clinton passed the bar in Arkansas. I assumed there was an inter-state recognition of other state’s bar exams. Not sure if this assumption is correct, however.
I’m pretty sure that, to practice in a state, you have to be approved by that state’s Supreme Court. Federal is a whole different ball game.
As a lawyer, do you have to be authorized to argue before the Supremes, before you can become a Supreme? Constitutionally, the answer is no–but that’s just the first bar.
P.S. Another caveat: the almost complete lack of a paper trail, except in the bullshit world of politics. Souter turned out better than expected, I suppose, but Hillary would have all of the political baggage, and none of the austere judicial prestige.

As for the question of which other nominees to the SCOTUS never served as judges prior to appointment, one could note that Clarence (Uncle) Thomas served a mere ONE YEAR on the US Court of Appeals for DC before his nomination by George HW Bush. Thomas’ status as a court follower confirms just how underqualified he was–and is.
I would, however, LOVE to have someone of Clinton’s smarts and tenacity to lock horns with uber-hack Scalia. She’d be every bit as nasty to him as he is to the other members of the court.

She deserves a large amount of recognition for her tenacity, but moreso for the amount of votes she has won through the primary season. I think she has lost, but not by much. Her stack of chips are quite high. What then, do you, as Obama, do with her
1) Select her as VP. Probably a winning ticket, but I would think a difficult governing ticket. First, there is the stuff between the two. second, THere is the Bill question. How does Hillary getting into the VP slot keep Bill from interjecting himself? Big problem for Obama, also kind of against his campaign as “change”.
2) SCOTUS? I think Political Mama is right on the mark. Not the right person
3) Head of the senate? NOt Obamas to give.
4) UN? Probably not the stature she seeks,

Mybe the “stuff between the two” is exactly what we need. Each would act as a brake on the more extreme tendencies of the other. Each would also be invaluable to the other. Hillary would innoculate Obama’s idealism with a hefty dose of political reality, and Obama would make sure our ideals were upheld in the face of political expediency.
It’s going to take the talents of both of them doing their damnedest to dig this country out of the deep grave Bush has prematurely buried us in. Only then will we be able to honestly announce “Mission Accomplished!”

Ideally they would come into the convention so close that they’d have to flip a quarter to see who’s president and who’s the very active veep- as close to a co-presidency the constitution allows. I’m sure there’ll be some knock-down-drag-outs, but the country just might be all the better for them. We’ve already seen how well an imperial presidency works!

I must admit, my timing was impeccable as usual regarding my posts on this very thread on 5/22 and 5/23 and the comments that Comrade Clinton made to the Sioux Falls newspaper later in the day on 5/23. By the way, I think it was FDR who said ” there are no accidents in politics, if it happened (or was said) that way, somebody meant for it to happen that way.” Any threat to Barrack Obama’s life will come from the left, that much I am sure of.
