Clinton throws economists under the bus

clintonabcthisweek.jpgSo is anyone who disagrees with Hillary Clinton’s policies now an elitist? ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos asked Clinton if she could name a single economist who supports her proposal to suspend the gas tax for the summer. “I’m not going to put my lot in with economists,” Clinton responded, claiming that “elite opinion is always on the side of doing things that really disadvantages the vast majority of Americans.”
Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich contacted two of Clinton’s economic advisers Sunday to see if they were surprised to learn that Clinton doesn’t care what they think. One of them hadn’t heard the remark yet and couldn’t believe Clinton would say it. The other dismissed it as “politics as usual.” But as Reich noted, “that’s the problem: politics as usual.”

Doesnt sound much different than Thomas Frank. True or not, it’s masterfully played.

Who said you can never go wrong underestimating the American voter? Hell, they believed bush, didnt they?

No matter how much folks say they want major change, in the end, they never really vote for it.

If I listened to an economist I would prefer one that is elite in their field. Is Clinton, like the Republicans, saying that they won’t listen to experts? We don’t need four more years of a President that listens to “gut feelings”.

Well, at least she’s got economic advisors, even if she won’t listen to them; that’s still one up on Bush McCain.
That said, the gas tax holiday is way too little, way too late, and we’re supposed to be grateful for it anyway?

“elitist” = not signing to tax ‘holiday’ because we understand that such a policy is blantant pandering at it’s worst, which will do nothing to reduce the cost of gas, encourage conservation, promote domestic production or assist consumers, at the cost of cutting into the Federal dollars available for roads.

All downsides, no upsides. But opposing same is “elitist.”

    Uh-huh.

Hillary will throw her own momma under the bus if she has to get into office. Bill and her both are throwing their political weight around because ‘it is her turn’. When and who decided that? Let all the primaries run their course and see where the chips fall.

I sure bet Bill or Hillary never expected such a tight race with Obama; but I, for one, am glad to see someone give them a run for their money.

Hillary, bless her heart! Barrack will get the nomination and beat the pants off of Grandpa McCain because 70 percent of the American people think that Bush’s Misbegotten War sucks. And, Bill, what a great guy, but we don’t want him anywhere near the White House. The problem? Within six months, he’d get his tit in a wringer over influence peddling and contradicting President Obama.

Hillary is a Political war horse, for some of her supporter that is the major appeal. She is well suited for Politics as usual and would fight with the Conservatives at every turn. In a sense as if this is a surprise to many that is why the Extreme right wants her to win.

Watching her today on the stump, it reminds me of the story Jack Anderson tell of being a “cub reporter” covering a Senator’s re-election trip to an Indian reservation. The Senator said if they voted for him he would build new schools on the reservation. To which the Indians responded “Ho-ya Ho-ya”.
He looked to his aid and the aid shrugged his shoulders. The Senator then promised if voted for his would build a new hospital on the reservation. Once again the Indians said “Ho-ya Ho-ya!”. the aid shrugged his shoulders again. The Senator than said if they voted for him he would build new roads on the reservation.
    Again… “Ho-ya Hoya !”

During a tour of the reservation, the guild lead the Senator through a horse pasture. The guild smiled when he told the Senator, “Watch your step Senator and don’t step in the Ho-ya!”.

It’s the oil companies footing the bill so who cares?
    ————-
Why do you say that? I thought no one was paying the bill, that it was a plan to stop collecting the federal tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day. NO affect on oil companies, just a reduction in those taxes and the road work they support, the jobs the road work supports… What am I missing?

You are missing the difference between Senator Clinton’s gas tax holiday and Senator McCain’s.

Your take is based on Senator McCain’s bad plan.

Senator Clinton would shift the burden of the road maintenance taxes to the oil companies in the form of a windfall profits tax.

A tax on those record profits the oil companies have been making?

Seems like a great idea to me.

“Senator Clinton would shift the burden of the road maintenance taxes to the oil companies in the form of a windfall profits tax.”

As if George WMD Bush would sign legislation that would impose a tax on oil company profits?

    Pull the other one.

The gas tax holiday is an ephemeral illusion. And it’s proven bad policy.

For the prices they’re charging us, they should provide the vehicle and the roads! Kind of like cameras, sell a cheap camera and make the bucks on the film. Or, like printers, sell them cheap and make the profit on the ink.

As I have said, I don’t know if this helps the economy or not. But I say let’s try it.

At the least, it’s a brilliant political move.

bush would almost CERTAINLY veto a plan that shifts the road taxes to the oil companies.

Then we get to have an election.

The Republicans would be seen as the party of no road maintenance, or let the poor people pay the road maintenance while the oil companies have ANOTHER record quarter.

    Get it?

    “BlueJay” –

I can’t begin to address all the political contortions of your logic.

What should bother you, as a Clinton supporter is how the issue is classic Republic Party Lite.

You seem so repulsed by Obama’s outreach message. Yet Hillary’s plan is mere lipstick on a pig; it was McBush’s idea and she tacked on the windfall profits tax (sure to not get signed by Shrub) and demagogue the issue.

And it’s goofy politically. Right after whomever gets the nomination, Labor Day, the price of every gallon of gasoline is gonna jump back to that 18-cent higher price.

“I voted for that! Vote for me!!”

“Right after whomever gets the nomination, Labor Day, the price of every gallon of gasoline is gonna jump back to that 18-cent higher price.”

    AND.

Candidate Clinton and Democrats can THEN blame the end of the windfall profits tax on the oil companies for the increase!

It’s perfect. It sets up the oil companies to be forced into paying the tax out of their profits permanently on pain that their con politicians will lose otherwise.

For the oil companies to justify the rise in price of gasonline….

They’d have to cite supply and demand.

But supply meets demand. And has continued to.

As gasoline crossed the 1 dollar, 2 dollar, and 3 dollar thresholds, supply was consistent.

Now, gasoline appraoches 4 dollars a gallon.

But there is no shortage as to supply.

We are being gamed. The best way to break that game is with a windfall profits tax on the oil companies.

Hey at least that would give them a REASON for jacking the price of gas.

    Don’tcha think they need one?

If Big Oil is such a good friend to the Americans, then why won’t they sacrifice just a small portion of their record-breaking profits for the good of the entire country? Why are these big oil companies not being asked to sacrifice in these times of the so-called ‘war on terror’? Why are Big Oil companies not being pressured or even encouraged to find alternative fuels?

All I ever hear is they want to drill in ANWAR. They want the right to drill anywhere and anyhow they choose to drill within the USA.

I would let them drill for oil within the USA if they are willing to do it responsibly. But these Big Oil companies have proven themselves to be ravagers of the environment and they will only leave a bigger mess for the taxpayers to clean up when and if they move on to their next drilling site.

No, this is a TAX break. Oil companies will receive the same prices and profits they always do. The federal government will take the hit in revenues from taxes. It will mean less money for services the government provides to the American people, probably through government worker salaries. Some sources project the loss in revenues are enough to cost 6,000 government employees their jobs.

The gas holiday is a terrible idea for American workers and won’t take a penny out of the pockets of big oil. Why do you think John McCain who talks out of both sides of his mouth suggested it in the first place? Let the gov’t and workers pay while you pander to big oil and pull the wool over the American people’s eyes about what a great deal we’re getting.

BOTH Hillary and McCain are Bush Lite.

Just keep beating up on the evil corporations – Clinton/Obama need an enemy to blame, since they have no solutions.

Windfall profits tax, last time that was tried, dried up 6% of domestic production and increased imports by 12%. If it’s cheaper to buy foreign oil, that’s what YOU will choose to put in your gas tank. Dumb idea. We been there done that, and those proposing the same again are too stupid understand history.
