“It used to be that he was incandescent and she was merely inveterate. Now she’s bristling with life force, and he looks like he wants to run away somewhere for three months by himself and smoke,†Maureen Dowd wrote about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
“Hillary is not getting much sleep or exercise, and doesn’t, like the ascetic Obama, abstain from junk food and coffee and get up at dawn to work out on the road. She’s still a long shot and she’s 14 years older than her rival. Yet she’s the one who is more energetic and focused and beaming, and he’s the one who seems uneven and gauzy, often fatigued and unable to disguise being fed up with the slog.â€

This late surge just might give Clinton the nomination. If whe can win on Tuesday she might get her popular vote total up to Obama’s. If that happens she might get the super-delegates.
Good Lord!
Can we finally put the “national media loves Obama and hates Clinton” to rest now?
Fawning and drivel are too good to describe for this piece of non-insight.
“If that happens she might get the super-delegates.”
and water cannons in Denver.
And now we know who is driving this Rev Jeremiah Wright story – the Clintons.
Wasn’t John McCain kissing the butt of white preacher in New Orleans that had stated Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment? And we all know John McCain kisses the butt of Pat Robertson who is well-known for some hate speech of his own.
I may not agree with Jeremiah Wright but alot of blacks see his point of view. If we allow the Pat Robertson’s of the world to spew their hate speech – then we should allow the Jeremiah Wright’s their right to free speech. Isn’t that what the freedom of speech is all about?
freedom of speach does not mean freedom from criticism of ones views.
“And now we know who is driving this Rev Jeremiah Wright story – the Clintons”
Proof please. And your personal paranoia and Hillary Hatred are NOT proof.
Stand back, stand back I tell you!!!! She is bristling!!! Save yourselves!!!!
WSClark-
I don;t know if you support Obama or Clinton, but that is still funny. THanks for the laughter!
True. Obama seems to be fading down the stretch.
It seems he was listening to the pundits who said that Hillary could not pull it out, and made some mistakes: 1) he relaxed 2) started to look past Hillary to the fall, losing his focus 3) he underestimated the Clinton camp’s ability to use the media to attack (i.e. “bittergate,” the Wright mess). The Clintons are nothing if not relentless and ruthless.
And his “friends,” i.e. Rev. Wright, have not been very friendly to him (with friends like these . . . ). Wanna bet the good Reverend will have a book out in a few months?
GMC – and don’t forget the “liberal media” who have given the Wright story so much airtime.
Never underestimate the stamina and strength of a middle aged woman.
Junk food RULES!
hehebheheheheheh. Or as my sign says…
“Age and treachery will overcome youth and vigor any day.”
I’m sorry, but as a middle aged woman who also doesnt shun junk food, I just couldnt resist!
Maybe Barack is tired from all that working out?
Or maybe, it’s like some of us said from the begining. He doesnt have the stomach for the fight.
I think it’s the chicken soup and sliced jalapenos they say is her favorite food. She wants it available at every meal.
My doc in Austin used to say if you feel a little punky, eat chicken enchiladas with no cheese but lots of hot sauce.
The chicken is good for your immune system and the peppers will kill whatever ails ya!
A theory that must be workin’ for Hillary.
Good point kfg. I sure as heck would not bet against my wife’s stamina – especially since I have seen her with the grandkids!
Teach the poor woman how to get a cup of coffee, for Heaven’s sake!

According to the criteria I just read, McCain is the man and Hillary is just leading us on. No Hillary Care or Obama’s more social program increases.
Good grief paulie! I’m pretty gadget challenged myself. When confronted with a new machine I frequently fumble around.
Which is why I avoid machines as much as possible.
Kinda like pushing on the pull door…
Remember the Far Side cartoon about the “School for the Gifted” where the kid is pushing on the door over the sign that clearly says “pull”.
That’s what I think this coffee machine moment was. Hey, at least she admitted she hadnt pumped gas in a while.
Unlike bush the first who had never seen grocery store price scanners and had no clue about the price of milk….
Yeah Ben. If I have to go to a three day conference in a big hotel out of town, by the time it’s over, I’m draggin’ my tail and hafta take to my bed for another three days.
I thought about that the other day, what a physical trial this campaign and the traveling and the “always being on” must be. Maybe when I was in my thirties but now?
I’m grabbin’ the remote, a beer, and some popcorn… And I am NOT leaving the couch!
Youth is truly wasted on the young.
At least she isn’t singing about starting another war Paulie!
Honestly, I hate doing these things myself.
When traveling anywhere, my mind is on other things, and I am kinda on “auto pilot” — likely to punch the decaf button when that is not what I want, etc.
I understand entirely.
But, it is still funny to see that others have the same problems.
Yes it is funny paul. I think we like to see our leaders be human. Too bad every human frailty is cause for winning/losing an election. I gotta admit, I laughed my ass off when bush couldnt find the door in, China was it? He did clown around and make the best of it. Probably the same thing I would have done.
I’ve got to say, I’m fed up with the slog too.
“Unlike bush the first who had never seen grocery store price scanners and had no clue about the price of milk….”
Some lies never die. The whole story is a myth, invented nearly out of whole cloth by a reporter for the NY Times – and he wasn’t even there.
The Times. I’m shocked, I tell ya.
See for yourself:
http://www.snopes.com/history/american/bushscan.asp
Now I know the left never lets the facts get in the way of a good story, but . . .
It used to be that he (Obama) was incandescent…
More like a flickering fluorescent bulb, constantly changing lumen intensity, altering the appearance of natural colors and making that annoying humming sound.
freedom of speach does not mean freedom from criticism of ones views.
This is true but why does the Christian Right get so offended when Pat Robertson is criticized for expressing his freedom of speech?
But how is it that Jeremiah Wright’s comment on the chickens coming home to roost has not been credited to the white man who said it first? I believe his name was Edwin Peck (sp?).
Rather than jumping on the messenger, let’s see if the message has any validity.
This entire Wright ordeal has been politics at its worst.
“invented nearly out of whole cloth by a reporter for the NY Times – and he wasn’t even there.
The Times. I’m shocked, I tell ya.”
Bad yes. But not as bad as the NY Times spinning the whole cloth for Bush on the war.
I have a theory about Maureen Dowd.
spot on Lucee. The down side is that they are authorized to spin. Even in the no-spin zone.
It’d be nice if Maureen Dowd would figure out who she loathes the most. And, why Republicans would ever be interested in that woman’s sex life has always been a mystery to me. Another sign their priorities are all mixed up, perhaps?
Superdelegate logic: Obama 1 point for winning more states. Obama 1 point for winning more pledged delegates. Clinton 1 point for winning raw votes. Clinton 1 point for bristling with more life force.

Chickens come home to roost?
You pretty much sugar-coated that sermon by Reverend Wright, didn’t ya? :)
If she passes him in votes might she also pass him in number of states?
It’s really too bad FL and MI screwed up.
Lately I’ve wondered if this election has been drawn out so ALL of us will accept whomever is elected because we’ll be sooo relieved it’s finally over! Has it been going on for a decade yet? I do admire the fortitude of the candidates!
Life force, huh? I’d like to use some force…
I think we all need a vacation.
“Having lost the White House twice to brass-knuckled pols, the Dems may be drawn to a woman who thinks like Karl Rove.”
Dowd might have a point here.
A glimpse into the Maureen Dowd (or MoDo as she is sometimes called) psychodrama:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/04/AR2005110401996.html?nav=E8
I gotta tell my fellow libs, you have to truly admire Hillary’s fortitude. That’s why she needs to be our next president. You watch, once she really starts looking like she’s going to win the nomination, the Republicans and Faux Noise are going to start raving on Obama again.
They’re playing the people like a fiddle, and it really pisses me off. However, that will end as soon as they’re put in their damn place permanently, in the minority.
Obama will be Hillary’s running mate, make no mistake, we will come together.
As far as running into doors, hey did you forget?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8px_KyIFyo&feature=related
You are correct P-mom. The “Liberal Media” will continue to give McBush a pass while they take turns tearing down the two Democratic candidates.
“Good Lord!
Can we finally put the “national media loves Obama and hates Clinton” to rest now?
Fawning and drivel are too good to describe for this piece of non-insight.”
Capn?
ONE!
ONE story that says something nice about Senator Clinton.
After all the kid gloves for Obama in all but one debate. After all Randy Shofield love letters to Obama in this very forum.
And you think ONE story makes that even?
Come ON!
And as to this long overdue thread?
I thin I hear a bell.
Yes I just heard another one. By golly I think I hear the theme from “Rocky”!
Dupont used to advertise years ago: “Better Living Through Chemistry.”
Don’t be too hard on WS, I remember how I felt when Hillary was behind, and I had the same ‘I hate everyone’ feeling. I tell ya though it’d be NOTHING compared to how I’d feel if McSame was elected.
Lets face it, there is no way in hell any of us want that to happen.
I think after the election, and we get our Democratic Congress and Presidency, I’ll start flying my flag again.
This is more of the “Clinton death watch.” She netted as many delegates in the HUGE WIN! of PA as Obama got in f***ing Idaho.
She has already lost.
The question now is how much damage is she willing to do to the Democratic nominee as she desperately drags him down to try to claw herself up.
I’m telling you, if a Dem challenges her for her Senate seat, that person gets my cash support.
I HATE to plug Billo O’Reilly.
And I DO recommend a good shower after contact with Fox “news”.
But DO catch the rest of Senator Clinton’s interview with him tonight.
It’s funny. Billo has an expert on body language and speaking. Now I’m no expert.
But what I have seen of Clinton and O’Reilly so far?
Her demeanor with him is sorta like “I like you. You’re silly!”
Stellar!
Oh COME ON Capn!
It’s like you’re in a spell or something.
P-Mom wrote “once she really starts looking like she’s going to win the nomination, the Republicans and Faux Noise are going to start raving on Obama again.”
You are entirely correct, PMOM!
The “liberal media” don’t care who the Dem nominee is, because whoever it is, they’re going to attempt to ridicule, humiliate, and demean them.
Kerry: Swift boated
Gore: “I invented the internet”
Dukkais: Willie Horton
Gary Hart: Bimbo-ized
Jerry Brown: Governor Moonbeam
George McGovern: Pu$$y
“as she desperately drags him down to try to claw herself up.”
That’s a lie Capn.
She didn’t make Obama stick with that kooky pastor.
I’ve been very impressed that she did NOT go there.
Maybe she should have. How fair is it to Edwards that Obama has lost his shine?
Capn Clinton still can win, something you refuse to acknowledge because you don’t want to.
Hillary is playing along with Faux News, she knows what they’re up to. That’s why she acted like she had to hold her nose to be there with the slimeball.
“Obama will be Hillary’s running mate, make no mistake, we will come together.”
Barack will be Hillary’s running mate (as VP) the day that Bill Clinton gives up fooling around and Hillary admits that her hair is dyed.
Not until.
Hillary would be a lot easier to take if she wasn’t so arrogant. If she does get the nod, I’ll seriously consider McCain.
Every election I convince myself I’m going to vote Democrat and every election, Democrats convince me that they’re dumber than a bag of hammers.Sometimes you just can’t hold your nose tight enough.
WS
If it plays out that way. If.
Obama would be an absolute FOOL not to take the VP slot. It sets him up as the next clear candidate.
bristling with life force? Next Phil will have Hillary sprouting wings and a halo! She is ready to assume the position of Commander in Cheek.
Point, set, score for the Hillary come back team!
Chaos in the ranks.
Hey Max! Pass the popcorn.
“Obama would be an absolute FOOL not to take the VP slot”
WHY would Obama EVEN support Clinton, nonetheless take a slot on her ticket?
He would be an absolute IDIOT to even endorse her, let alone take a spot on the ticket.
If somehow, someway Clinton steals the nomination – which is likely – the Democrat Party will be so divided that Clinton could not possibly win.
Obama is not about to go down with the ship for Hillary’s benefit, not after the slurs tossed at him by Mr. and Mrs. Clinton.
But he IS a clear candidate. Doesn’t need to wait to be the “next” anything.
I wish we could ALL be patient enough to allow this process to play itself out to its conclusion and quit beating up on one another and our two excellent candidates. There are states (states who followed the rules they agreed to when they scheduled their primaries) who haven’t yet been heard from.
Relax. It is going as planned. Smile and know the Democratic Party isn’t stuck with a candidate none of us like and respect. It’s a great political season!
Last update from Topeka:
HOUSE PASSES OMNIBUS BUDGET BILL
The budget bill passed on a close vote, 64 to 60. It was passed by a bi-partisan group. The Senate will be working their version beginning about 4:30 p.m. Then, once theirs is passed, the conference committee on the omnibus budget begins its work to reconcile where the two are different.
Meanwhile the House and Senate will continue to consider conference reports and the coal power plant proposal and veto. The House recessed about 4:00 p.m., after passing the budget bill and will come back at 6:00 p.m., with caucuses at 5:30. Tonight they will be debating the newest coal plant bill and, probably, taking up the veto override.
Sorry linda.
But we FINALLY get one thread that is fair to Senator Clinton.
How many Obama shills from Randy have we had here? Like 20?
We get ONE thread for Clinton and some of the Obamaniacs have to come lobbing bombs.
Interesting tidbit circulating in Topeka on Healthcare. Doesn’t appear to be a rampant problem and only affects a limited number of Americans. But the KS proponents did try:
WHO ARE THE UNINSURED?
One in four of America’s medically uninsured are eligible for public programs but are not enrolled, according to a new report. The National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation, a Washington, D.C. think tank, found about 12 million uninsured people, half of them children, could be enrolled in Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. The study found that people are not enrolled for a variety of reasons: They don’t know about the programs, don’t know how to enroll, or don’t want to be associated with a publicly financed program. The 20-page report “Understanding the Uninsured: Tailoring Policy Solutions for Different Sub-populations,” segments the uninsured according to their eligibility for public programs, income, and whether they are a child, a parent, or a childless adult.
Using 2006 data from the 2007 Current Population Survey provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, the foundation’s researchers also described in the report a range of policy options for extending health coverage, including ones for reaching uninsured young adults and older adults not yet eligible for Medicare. The report concluded that more than half of the uninsured are childless adults, but there is little public assistance available to them. Currently, only seven states offer such coverage and Kansas is not among them. The Legislature this session was asked to consider expanding coverage by 2010 to include childless adults earning 100% or less of poverty guidelines, but that proposal by the Kansas Health Policy Authority was rejected.
“If somehow, someway Clinton steals the nomination -”
WS?
Try and wrap yourself around the fact that the game has rules. Senator Clinton is playing within those rules. If you don’t LIKE the rules you don’t get to blame her for them.
And once AGAIN. Obama made his case with me.
“Senator Clinton is playing within those rules.”
You are, of course, referring to the rules regarding Michigan and Florida where all of the candidates agreed that the delegates would not be seated and the primaries would not count.
Yeah, I am pretty disappointed that Obama wants those delegations to be seated, despite his agreement that they would not be.
I am even more disappointed that that he wants the Michigan vote to count, despite the fact that HILLARY wasn’t even on the ballot.
I am even more disappointed that he says that “pledged delegates” are not really pledged and they should vote for whomever the Hell they want to – regardless of the popular vote.
Hey that’s good!
The same rules in Michigan where Obama campaigned after agreeing Michigan wouldn’t count.
WS you have to be realistic about Florida and Michigan.
I heard a story today of a demonstration in Florida. They are threatening to RIOT in Denver if the delegates are not seated.
You CAN’T simply tell Michigan and Florida they don’t count at all.
Well we could.
But those are two key states. And that likely means President McCain.
That is what the superdelegates are FOR, we wouldn’lt need them if it was based on the popular vote now would we?
And Nano, I can see withholding vote, but to say you’d vote for McCain well then you’re not really looking out for America’s interests NOR are you a democrat.
And I’ll tell you this right now. If the blacks turn their backs on Hillary after everything she and Bill have done for their cause, I’ll flat out turn racist myself. You know why? It’ll make my f’ing racist father RIGHT about one damn thing in his life.
Senator Clinton hit it out of the park with Billo again.
The ONE topic he gave more discussion than any other?
Water boarding?
The cons they do want their torture.
Thing is? There is NO candidate is this race that is in favor of waterboarding. So discussing Senator Clinton’s being against it is rather pointless.
“The same rules in Michigan where Obama campaigned after agreeing Michigan wouldn’t count.”
Obama never campaigned in Michigan, dumbass.
“You CAN’T simply tell Michigan and Florida they don’t count at all.”
How do you allocate the delegates, especially in Michigan WHEN OBAMA WASN’T EVEN ON THE GOD DAMNED BALLOT?
Christ.
“But those are two key states. And that likely means President McCain.”
If Clinton gets the nomination, it will mean President John S. McCain.
Without a doubt.
I’m not saying we should accept that Hillary took that state, Michigan, but the ballots should be recast with both names on it.
“If the blacks turn their backs on Hillary after everything she and Bill have done for their cause”
What did Hillary and Bill Clinton do for African Americans?
The same thing that they did for gays and lesbians?
“If Clinton gets the nomination, it will mean President John S. McCain.
Without a doubt.”
Yes well.
Senator Clinton is LEADING John McCain more than Obama is in some polls.
WS?
Do you wish Obama was already the nominee? Even with all this that has come out recently?
We are not even sure if he will recover from the Wright thing yet.
And before I go for now.
You do realize WS and Obama supporters.
Right now, the con fire is divided. And Senator Clinton has LONG taken more than half of it.
The minute, the second she is out, ALL the fire and light goes on Obama. It is my honest opinion that that is not the best thing for EITHER candidate just now.
“Even with all this that has come out recently?”
His pastor was/is an idiot.
He knew Billy Ayers.
He thinks that small town voters may be bitter.
Got anything else?
Sniper fire?
Law firm records?
Busted health care plan?
Bombing Iran for the benefit of Israel?
The McCain/Clinton Gas Tax Holiday?
“And Senator Clinton has LONG taken more than half of it.”
Deservedly so. Maybe her “thirty five years of experience” can bail her ass out.
Extolling Ronald Reagan,
Calling Republicons the party of ideas.
Thinking Republicons can be worked with.
Blaming parents who have no health insurance for their kids.
And something new.
Capn and WS appear to have some interesting friends!
The entire right has this race called. Obama IS the nominee!
I wonder why.
Actually I know why. And I’m afraid it is time to say it.
I for one do not believe that Barack Obama is electable. And you can blame his own pastor for that. That story is just not going away.
BUT
Unlike the right and some of those who support Obama, I do not want this race called. Let ALL the states have a vote. Go to the convention even.
“The same rules in Michigan where Obama campaigned after agreeing Michigan wouldn’t count.”
Of course I knew that Hillary Clinton, despite agreeing not to count the votes in Michigan, kept her name ON the ballot and CAMPAIGNED in Michigan.
WS, wasn’t your previous post twisting everything Obama/Clinton did?
At any rate, don’t worry, your superdelegates will decide this for you voters. Obama won Missouri, but the supers are pledged to Hillary,
the energizer rabbit according to Brownlee.
“Blaming parents who have no health insurance for their kids.”
I don’t think it’s a matter of blaming JR. I think most people believe a parent is RESPONSIBLE for the care of their children. That would include working and gaining an education or technical skills to find employment with healthcare provided.
Like the majority of Americans.
Blaming parents who have no health insurance for their kids.”
I don’t think it’s a matter of blaming JR. I think most people believe a parent is RESPONSIBLE for the care of their children. That would include working and gaining an education or technical skills to find employment with healthcare provided.
Like the majority of Americans.- AW
Yeah, right. Those four jobs parents are working just to pay the gas bill, sure they can squeeze in college on 7.50 per hour. Then while the parents are at work and the kids are home alone, they can go into state custody and you can pay for their healthcare there. In the meantime, the kid with diabetes can just die, right?
I’m so f’n glad I’m not a republican.
What have the Clintons done for African Americans?
http://dir.salon.com/story/books/int/2002/02/20/clinton/index.html
Remember, Hillary is a child of the sixties, she could be remembering the benefits of Bennies and Dexies!
But hey she needs that energy and stamina to keep up with Bill’s sex drive! Yeah… I jealous so?
I don’t know JR, Hillary seems to be more comfortable with the extreme Right wing then I am!
There sure seems some chemistry between Bill-o and Hill!
WHY would Obama EVEN support Clinton, nonetheless take a slot on her ticket?
He would be an absolute IDIOT to even endorse her, let alone take a spot on the ticket.
If that is the case, and I don’t think it is.
He would be committing political suicide.
Think of it this way. It’s a case of who is the last villain.
I have said Obama cannot win the general. So I’ll go from there.
IF Senator Clinton “steals” the nomination? She will be the villian.
But If Obama will not unify, then HE will be the villian. McCain will be President because of Obama and his supporters.
Thus would end the political career of Obama.
“I have said Obama cannot win the general”
Well, that seals the deal – Obama should drop out now and resign his Senate seat too.
It’s all over for him – J R has spoken.
Sorry Barack, time for you to turn tail and head back to Chicago.
J R has spoken.
I have to agree. Obama is fading fast and she is surging. Obama has just been beat down too much by both the media, his preacher and the rigors of a year long marathon campaign.
JR I have no doubt that Obama would support Hillary if she get it, his supporters may not but he would.
In a sense though that is a danger for both of them and in the end for the Democratic party. If Obama does get the nomination but losses the election. Hillary will not be able to escape being blamed by a number of people.
As much as you hate to keep hearing it, has it ever occurred to you that Kristol, O’Reilly, Rush and you have something in common? All of you seem to be supportive of the same Candidate! And in a sense it is even for the same reason, Hillary is a old style Politician. She can stand toe to toe, fighting instead of solving. It would be a win/win for them, if she is elected they have another Clinton in office to beat up and accuse. If Mc Cain wins it will be in part because he was running against Hillary Clinton whom quite a few see as the other side of the same coin from John.
Dog, you hit the nail squarely on the head!
“If Obama does get the nomination but losses the election. Hillary will not be able to escape being blamed by a number of people.”
No shit.
And Clark is giving us a sneak preview of the meme that will turn to headline if Hillary WINS the nomination.
she stole it
This thing is far from over, which is what Hillary supporters have been saying. But nice to know the Obama camp has its excuses for losing all tidy and ready to roll out.
It’ll be Hillary’s “fault” no matter what.
So much for personal responsibility….
“If Mc Cain wins it will be in part because he was running against Hillary Clinton whom quite a few see as the other side of the same coin from John.”
If mcsame wins, it will also be IN PART because obama had baggage and flaws as a candidate.
And because America is STILL too racist, sexist, homophobic and xenophobic to not elect anyone but another old white guy.
Blame the voters, not the candidates.
A congressman from IL was on Charlie Rose the other night. He is a friend to both Senators; he was discussing the ‘what hapens after’ question. He made the point that the key will be how the loser loses. In 1980 Ted Kennedy lost bitterly; he pretty much snubbed President Carter at the convention. That sealed Carter’s fate; any chance he had for a comback was destroyed. Many of us remember that and Teddy has never been forgiven by many of us.
If next month the Democrats can have a winner who is perceived as having won and the loser can reconcile with that the Democrats will win in November. McSame should be easy to defeat given the fact that a vast majority of Americans disagree with him on the way (among other things).
If, however, whichever Democrat loses acts like he/she was robbed the winner will have a very difficult campaign in the fall. And, if McBush wins in November, BOTH Obama and Clinton will be badly damaged within the Democratic Party and will NOT be rewarded in 2012.
Interesting: A few thoughts –
1) “Try and wrap yourself around the fact that the game has rules. Senator Clinton is playing within those rules.” – JR
Uh-huh. What side of the planet are you on? It is Clinton attempting to jigger the rules. FL? MI? Remember the rules? But rules, schmules, apparantly. IOKIYAC!!
2) “Obama would be an absolute FOOL not to take the VP slot. It sets him up as the next clear candidate.” – JR
Check the historical record on sitting VP’s running for president. It’s not pretty. When GHWB did it following Reagan, he was the first sitting VP to be elected in I think over 100 years. Note that even Gore could not do so, even following a very popular president. VP’s are generally invisible; given Bill and Hill in the White House, that will be especially so.
Remember the old line: “There once was a woman with two sons. One went off to the sea, the other became Vice President. Neither were ever heard from again.”
No, Obama would be much better served, if he does not get the nomination, to go back to the Senate and polish up his rather thin resume.
Of course, her resume’s rather thin too; she’s a carpetbagging junior Senator who rode her husband’s coattails to prominance. If the theme is experience and being ready on “day one,” the phrase we keep hearing from Hillary, McCain wins that argument hands down.
3) ” . . . because America is STILL too racist, sexist, homophobic and xenophobic to not elect anyone but another old white guy.” – KFG
Still trotting out the race/sex card? So . . . anyone who votes against Obama or Clinton is a racist &/or sexist? Uh-huh. One is not permitted to disagree with either of them, I suppose, having nothing to do with either race or sex? Wow. Guilt as a campaign strategy – “Vote for me and PROVE you’re not a racist/sexist!”
Just how effective do you think that’ll be?
GMC, yer nuts. I never said any of the words you are trying to put in my mouth. I said what I said as a statement of fact.
I saw a poll this week, but dont have time to find it now. It said something like more than 50% of voters said race would affect their voting.
And that doesnt even address the homophobia or xenophobia.
Interpret and expand on my comments all you want, but be clear which are your words and which are mine. I stand by mine as a statement of fact.
KFG –
Polls are never “fact.” Polls are driven to get the desired results, to promote the desired opinion or outcome, depending entirely on who’s doing the polling.
That’s the “facts.”
Whatever GMC. I’m not gonna get in a word parsing contest with a lawyer. Whizzing match with a skunk and all.
I did NOT say that every vote against Hillary or obama was because of race or sex. I didnt. If you chose to interpret it that way, I’m assuming it is guilt. Shoe and fit and wearing it and all.
So… do you think America is NOT too racist, homophobic, sexist and xenophobic to elect anyone but another white guy?
Just wondering.
I did NOT say that every vote against Hillary or obama was because of race or sex.
You, you didn’t. Not in so many words. But the guilt was laid on nonetheless, and yes, that’s exactly the intent.
Will America vote for a woman or a black man? They’ve been doing so all year. My point, of course, is that there are any number of reasons to oppose either Clinton or Obama having nothing to do with race or sex. I have no doubt that race/sex will play a part; I’m not blind to our often shameful history.
But remember, there are significant numbers of people who have been, and will, vote for Obama or Clinton BECAUSE of race or sex. How is that any different?
“Polls are never ‘fact.’ Polls are driven to get the desired results, to promote the desired opinion or outcome, depending entirely on who’s doing the polling.”
I believe this is possible, but do you have anything empirical supporting the above statement?
The closest study I know about was a meta-analysis of psychotropic durg benefits. Those studies published in a British journal that were financially supported by a pharm company that made the drug under study produced significantly greater benefit results than those drug studies not so supported. I doubt if the effect was the resulf of a conscious effort on the part of the study authors.
So, as I say, your assertion would seem to be possible, I would just like to see some data, rather than unsubstantiated opinion.
Reading my mind for intent, counselor? I said it was a statement of fact. If the “fact” produces guilt, that was in the eye of beholder. Dont assign that intent to me. Ya know, I could have intended that folks get out and work HARDER for their candidate to overcome this. I could have intended that we just acknowledge the “fact” so we could start working on the problem.
Dont assume you know my intent. I’m still standing by that as a statement of fact.
As as to the poll about race influencing their vote, I’m assuming the affirmative respondents included these folks:
“But remember, there are significant numbers of people who have been, and will, vote for Obama or Clinton BECAUSE of race or sex.”
And you ask “How is that any different?”
It isnt. Shallow is as shallow does.
Heh. Another reason I dont trade in guilt?
The folks who SHOULD feel guilty never do. It’s just pointless to trade in guilt.
Besides, I think guilt says more about the person feeling it than anything else. And folks who dont feel guilt?
Arent they called sociopaths and psychopaths?
But what yer guilty about, how you feel it and how you work it out is up to YOU. Not the object of your guilt.
“I doubt if the effect was the resulf of a conscious effort on the part of the study authors.”
You always have to account for the Hawthorne Effect.
An aside to Steven…
My high school biology teacher, who was WAY ahead of his time and has been designated a Kansas Master Teacher, was a disciple of Huelett and Fleharty (sp) who taught Can Man Survive at good ol’ Ft. Hays. He introduced us to The Tragedy of the Commons when we were 15, his first year of teaching, in 1972.
He sent me a hard copy of that chapter from the book Can Man Survive which is, I think, now out of print. I ran into him at a party (!) a while back and we talked about how helpful that has been to me in my political activism. Especially water interests.
Sorry for the ramble, but I thought you’d find that interesting.
“You always have to account for the Hawthorne Effect.”
Yes. I also wish I could patent and sell the pacebo effect. In most all antidepressant studies, 30% of the participants taking a placebo get better to the same extent as those taking the real drug. As a student once responded to this, “people are so mental” (a Valley Girl voice enhances the joke)… :)
I remember hearing about that book and the class that went with it. That man made a huge impression on a whole generation of students. It does happen sometimes.
I am sorry, it was team taught – so, it should have been “those guys made an huge impression…”
Yeah Steven, I read something about knee surgery too, that they actually DIDNT replace some of the knees, and the non-recipients said they felt well in about the same proportion as those who actually did have their knees replaced.
Yep on Can Man Survive too. My old teacher said he had mostly lived his entire life by the things he first learned and thought of in that class. In some ways, I have too, although not as successfully.
Almost all of us in the water wars have the Tragedy of the Commons on our minds, in one way or another. I saw someone post it here the other day from wiki, and I heard Rachel Maddow (be still my heart) say it the other day.
Wouldnt it be nice if THAT entered the national consciousness?
Yeah, one of the first classes there, I think, that was team taught. Wilda Smith and Rose Arnold later team taught a “Women in History” class. That may not be the right name, but there were other VERY successful team taught classes back then. Dont know about now.
