Econ, I don't think the issue is about gas money to visit vets. It's about lingerie, Vegas trips, first class travel, etc.

In defense of the VA:

Many of their employees actually go out in the field and interview family members of disabled Veterans. Many Vets are not able to manage their own affairs, and benefits are paid to another family member with the purpose of taking care of the Veteran.
Sometimes, those funds are not spent properly.
There is no way to check on these issues without a home visit.
Also, many Veterans can not drive or do not have a car.
Again, VA workers travel, frequently, to visit with such people.

I have no doubt that there have been abuses.

However, lets not clamp down so hard, in response, that legit service to our Veterans is harmed.

Also, it is not fair to expect an employee to "front" gas money, hotel expenses etc.

They would not spend like that if they put their expenses on their credit card and then turned in an expense sheet to be reimbursed.Another example of government at it's best.

Maybe if the VA quit wasting taxpayer money, they'd have more to take care of the damaged vets.
