In his State of the Government address, Wyandotte County Unified Government Mayor Joe Reardon was able to ponder what to do with all the casino and slot machine revenue that county sees ahead. He said he wants to “ensure that every dollar of gaming revenue we receive from the new casino†— an estimated $7 million to $10 million per year — “goes directly toward property tax reduction.†He’s also talking about funding a college scholarship program and improving neighborhood infrastructure. Of course, Wyandotte County’s current property tax rate is about 12.5 percent higher than the combined rates in Wichita and Sedgwick County. Reardon even spoke of making his county’s property tax rate competitive with that of Wichita and Sedgwick County.

He bribes voters with lies too get an Illegal Casino in and then allows a 7th street Illegal Casino too bribe the City of KCKS too operate. Lies and theft. Personal Agenda at work. Herbert West III west.herb@yahoo.com http://www.wen2k.com P.S. The only tribes who can Legally Operate in Kansas are, Potawatomie, Fox/SAx, White Cloud and the Kickapoo. See http://www.wen2k.com/tell.php?Id=805 I hope too see Governor Sebelius removed on a “Call Back Petition” and too see alot of “Personal Agenda” go with her.
It’s their county, you know the rest…
Politicians don’t know the meaning of lower taxes or less regulations. Gambling will only pay so much offsetting taxes.
Absolutely not!!!
The ONLY benefit would be in tourism and economic development, which would raise the value of the property and thus increase the property tax base. (of course that would be assuming that there was no property tax relief agreements in place for those properties.)
Heheeheheheh. Well, at least you still have your moral purity down there. If not your dollars in your pocketbook.
Funny how the wingnuts are all in favor of ANYTHING that will lower their taxes.
Until they’re not…
Well it is real nice of the Mayor of Wyandotte County Unified Government to make this proclamation,
we will see if his words lead to action to LOWER the mill levy by the elected body.
The decrease in mill levy would have to corresponde in a reduction in county/city revenue equal to the amount of revenue by the casino - dedicated to the Wyandotte County. But I would add - the revenue produced AS property taxes generated from the new casino.
Words do not always mean action.
Further, it was real nice of the Mayor, and the State of Kansas to screw the surrounding counties and cities. Douglas, Leavenworth, Johnson, Jefferson, and even Miami and Franklin Counties will pay a price for the Wyandotte “protected” casino.
Growth in Douglas and southern Leavenworth counties have caused growing pains as cities and the county struggle to provide infrastructure (e.g. roads, curbs, sewer, water). The home buildup continues despite a slow down nationally. The Legends/Race Track/Casino triple play on the SW edge of Wyandotte, has pushed the urban sprawl ever outward.
With the growth: comes property tax/valuation increases. New homes and developments - drive up existing. So those citizens living in surrounding cities/counties will not only get to enjoy the urban sprawl - but pay higher property taxes as well! But NOT share in any of the revenue.
Of course, since the casino/legends/NASCAR Track are all within an easy twenty mile commute - business is leaving the small towns in the surrounding counties! In Leavenworth alone: Sheridans, Sears, and Penny’s have closed up shop, only to reappear at the Legends.
And why eat at a small town resturant when you can go to the new Wyandotte sprawl and eat at one of many! Weekend destination shoppers and travelers have been diverted.
So thank-you Kansas Legislature for hosing the rest of the state with your selective legalized gambling and revenue sharing.
Hope you win at the slots, because the rest of us are paying a huge cost for your adventure.
Let this be a lesson elsewhere in the State…..
Lets remind ourselves where this extra “revenue” comes from: out of the pockets of the suckers - uh, I mean ‘patrons’ who show up. Every dollar spend there is a dollar NOT spend in restaurants, shops, grpcery stores, auto repair, etc., etc.
Don’t kid yourselves, folks. The dollars spent in the casino are not “magic” dollars which just show up and spread goodness and mercy. They come out of the pockets of your friends and neighbors. They come at the price of other local business, providers of goods and services, who do not make sales. And the owners of the casino, bless them, are kind enough to bribe the local politicians, a bribe they pass on as “tax relief,” so they may skim millions out of county and out of state.
Remind me again how this is a good deal?
I wouldn’t mind paying the rate Nevadans pay
