    From LawDog

    sorry for the length

“She was doing everything she was supposed to do to stay alive”
The sickening details of the murder of Meredith Emerson have been published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

One of the telling quotes to that sad tale is found about half-way down the article. It is from a Georgia Bureau of Investigation officer in response to the discovery that Meredith had not only struggled with her murderer, but when he asked for her ATM PIN number, she repeatedly gave him wrong numbers — the quote is:

“That’s one thing that broke my heart in this case,” Bridges said. “She was doing everything she was supposed to do to stay alive, and we didn’t get there in time.”

Allow me to repeat the salient point: “She was doing everything she was supposed to do to stay alive”

    That is incorrect.

Meredith Emerson did not do “everything she was supposed to do”

What she did was what forty years of liberal doublethink, forty years of pansy-arsed hippie empathy and guilt; and several decades of deliberate victim mentality systematically foisted onto the population in general and women in particular by the government and ivory-tower feel-good “intellectual” panty-waists have unilaterally decided that women are supposed to do.

In a just and sane world, Meredith Emerson would have been told from early girl-hood that she was expected to defend herself from unlawful force.

In a just and sane world, Meredith Emerson would have been taught not to fear firearms, but to accept them as tools for her defence.

In a just and sane world, Meredith Emerson would have grown up in a culture that supported her right to self-defence and a culture that promoted such.

In a just and sane world, Meredith Emerson would have been able to pick the firearm that best suited her without fear of arrest or sanction; and she would have been able to carry said firearm where and whenever she felt the need without some snot-nosed sanctimonious busybody drenching their knickers over that simple act.

In a just and sane world, Meredith Emerson would have been supported by state and Federal governments that would have allowed, abetted and encouraged her training with firearms.

In a just and sane world, when Gary Michael Hilton stepped out of the undergrowth with a bayonet and a baton, Meredith Emerson would have produced a .38 and centre-punched his rotten heart out through his spineless back.

Gary Michael Hilton is the rapist and murderer of Meredith Emerson.

The State and Federal Governments who consistently pass stupid and illogical firearms laws; the Brady Bunch who continue to parrot the foul and malicious lie that “Only the military and police need guns”; Hollywood’s sanctimonious assertation that “Violence is never the answer”, “Guns are a red-neck thing”, and “Women will only get hurt by guns”; not to mention societies acceptance of the Cult of Victimhood to the point where said Cult is a gods-be-damned State Religion — each and every one of these is an unindicted co-conspirator to the crimes that took this young ladies life.

And I hope the lot of you roast in hell for it.

It’s not often that the adage “Nice people finish last” can be debunked – but sometimes it can.

And because it can, the Songbird’s gettin’ her car outa the garage today. I’ve been without my hooptie for nearly 4 months now – ’cause I didn’t have all the funds needed to pay for the repairs. Now I do, thanks to the largesse of a coupla folks who decided to come to my rescue with a loan.

The Songbird will pay them back, certainly. Whether I’ve gotta sing for my supper or sell my body to science, I’m payin’ it back. ‘Cause I’ve got principles (sorry to disappoint you people who think pro-choicers are amoral).

Oh, it will be so nice to avoid walking to work – and struggling wearily with my arthritic back. Oh, it will be so wonderful to avoid the dude who likes to follow me around in his truck – tellin’ me I “sure do look better than the womenfolk he sees” in his program.

Turns out it was a work-release program.

It’ll be utopic to avoid the continual entreaties from strangers – male strangers – who offer rides to this road-ragin’ Rapunzel. (That’s right – ya don’t have to be drivin’ to exude road rage. I git real, real mad when would-be chauffeurs don’t take “no” for an answer.)

But I’m firmly convinced that I received this unsolicited loan because of several heartfelt, kind comments I proferred to someone recently. I know, and have always known, that I’m not “anti-life.” Not by the longest shot.

And the ‘bird’s gettin’ her cherished car out of the shop because of it.

    heckler,

Mr.lawdog must not be aware of Georgia concealed carry laws. I believe it is up to the individual to purchase the firearm apply for the permit, learn how to use the weapon. Be willing to use deadly force in self defense.

If you are assigning blame in the womans death, that would be her attacker. Blaming her death on the liberals is silly.

I can understand the quote of, “Firearms/Guns” are not needed”. Why? Cops dont shoot everyone they deal with. I have had 1 cop in 41 years pull a gun on me. I have been pulled over about 15 times since I was 16. 25 years and 1 time a cop pulls a gun on me. But, I do have to also look at, all cops who have pulled me over, have had the option and their gun was available. Self defense is more than beating eachother and shooting eachother. We are taught to “never” fight over property and stuff. Only are “lives”!! We are supposed to give atm pin#s, we are to give cars to them etc:.. It sucks, yea. 99% of those who are mugged or car jacked are alive to be interviewed. They protected their lives by being cooperative and the Police will investigate their property loss. I have studied Martial Arts my whole life. I collect instructor manuels. I have about 8 old time ones, that teach up to the 2nd degree black belt, each. From the 1930 and the late 60’s. They all state, ” Give up your property, fight for your life ONLY”! This is in Kobutakan Judo, Aikido, Ji-Jitsu {Japanese Combat Judo}, Tiger Ju Jitsu, Kenpo, and Judo. All of them teach weopan disarmment in technique yet all teach and state, “Never over property, “LIFE ONLY”. I have had to defend myself about 5 times in 41 years. I never used a weopan. I have never been mugged. I have taken a gun from someone. I was 9 years old he was 6. He found his brothers stolen gun and pointed it at me. I talked him into firing it into a hole in the ground and when he lowered it towards the hole I took it from him and gave it to my grandfather. This kids dad should have had the gun locked up. He did not. Gun Control is more important or even as equally important as Legislation also. If we follow these rules they dont have to tighten them as much. It is also personal responsibility. I am not judging the women who fight or dont fight. I dont feel they should be victims. The time to argue the point is not when it is 1 on 1 with a mugger or thief. Take a multitude of self defense classes. Get more that 1 opinion. Not all thieves and muggers think or act the same. They all have different Motives and Intentions for what they are doing. The world is dangerous. We need to be in tune to our world. We need to continue to use our brains and mental actions to survive. If we punch, they punch. Again they feel they have the right to Mug and Rob us. They will feel they have the right to hit us back. They will hit with a weopan. Get out of the situation 2 ways. 1. Stay out of situations, even if you are being stuborn and living “I can do as I feel”. 2. Make it thru the situation by, “Preserving life, forget about property”. Tell the police later thru verbal communications and interviews by you, not your autopsy. This also protects the next person by helping the Police catch these people and stopping them in how they communicate with everyone to include you and I. To find a qualified self defense course or class in your area go to your local Police Department or Sheriffs Office, ask them. Ask your Lawyer. Go to limewire.com and the other internet download sites. They have videos and classes taped there. They are free. I also found http://www.judoinfo.com . It is free. It teaches everything, exstensively about JUDO. Live safe, God Bless. Herbert west III, west.herb@yahoo.com

During my searches on the subject of sex stings I ran across this.

I read with interest the article by Anthony Cormier regarding the arrest of two 93-year-old men who were going to be charged with solicitation and being willing to pay $30 for sex.

Even though charges were dropped against one man, I feel the prosecutors handled it all wrong. They should have invited the two men out for lunch, discussed their situation and found out the secret to their sexual abilities and shared it with the rest of us.

Something I ran across, and philosophically says a number of things better than I can. A sample:

“As a child of the ’60s, I accepted as an article of faith that government is corrupt, that business is exploitative, and that people are generally good at heart.
    . . . .
“But in my life, a brief review revealed, everything was not always wrong, and neither was nor is always wrong in the community in which I live, or in my country. Further, it was not always wrong in previous communities in which I lived, and among the various and mobile classes of which I was at various times a part.
    . . . .
“I’d observed that lust, greed, envy, sloth, and their pals are giving the world a good run for its money, but that nonetheless, people in general seem to get from day to day; and that we in the United States get from day to day under rather wonderful and privileged circumstances—that we are not and never have been the villains that some of the world and some of our citizens make us out to be, but that we are a confection of normal (greedy, lustful, duplicitous, corrupt, inspired—in short, human) individuals living under a spectacularly effective compact called the Constitution, and lucky to get it.

For the Constitution, rather than suggesting that all behave in a godlike manner, recognizes that, to the contrary, people are swine and will take any opportunity to subvert any agreement in order to pursue what they consider to be their proper interests.

To that end, the Constitution separates the power of the state into those three branches which are for most of us (I include myself) the only thing we remember from 12 years of schooling.

The Constitution, written by men with some experience of actual government, assumes that the chief executive will work to be king, the Parliament will scheme to sell off the silverware, and the judiciary will consider itself Olympian and do everything it can to much improve (destroy) the work of the other two branches. So the Constitution pits them against each other, in the attempt not to achieve stasis, but rather to allow for the constant corrections necessary to prevent one branch from getting too much power for too long.”

    ———-

A very nice piece. And this, for those of us who take our politics just a bit too seriously here, from the end of the piece:

“The right is mooing about faith, the left is mooing about change, and many are incensed about the fools on the other side—but, at the end of the day, they are the same folks we meet at the water cooler. Happy election season.”

Well said. Read it all for yourself.

Another chuckle (or is that a groan?) for this Friday morning.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said on Friday that an economic stimulus program that will put $168 billion into consumers’ hands this year and next could help create hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

“We know they’re going to be helpful,” Paulson said on CNN television. “These (tax rebate) checks should be a big part of adding 500,000 to 600,000 additional jobs this year.”

You went and done it DOOR KING! Reminded me of a joke: As the old man sat waiting to be taken to his room in the hospital. He asked the receptionist, “How old do you think I am?”. The receptionist said “Oh I would guess you are about 67… 68.”. “Ha Ha I am 92!” said the old man.

When the nurse and the old man got to just outside the room, the old man asked the nurse. “How old do you think I am?”. The nurse said, “Oh I would guess you are about 65, maybe 66!”. The old man laughed and said “ I am 92!”.

After the nurse got the old man into his bed and settled, she left the room. As the old man laid in his bed, the curtain that divided the room opened. And a old woman appeared and said “Hello I am your room mate!”. The old man asked her, “how old do you think I am?”

The old woman walked over to beside the bed, lifted the old man’s hospital gown and cradled his genitals in her hands. Than said, “You are 92!”. The old man looked at her with a shocked look on his face then looked down to where her hands were and back up to her face. “How could you tell?” he asked her.
“I heard you tell the nurse out in the hallway!, she replied.

The normal employees would have taken care of the writing the notice, probably took a committee, to be sure, but they were there anyway; then, one to word process, off to the printers (IRS has its own printing or its own contractors for printing, so nothing too stimulative there). The notices were delivered through the USPS, and I don’t think additional folks were hired for this sole purpose.

So that part of the stimulus package was an extra dose of stimulus for government agencies? They took some of our money and kept some government employees busy letting us know they are going to send us some more of our money in a couple months.

But they forgot to tell us we have no money so actually the costs to tell us and to send us the money must be borrowed.

Fits all the descriptions of government efficiency, don’t you think!??

Any one in the conformation world knows who Pat Hastings is. She is an AKC all breed dog judge and author. I’ve been to several of her seminars and I respect her a lot.

She said that her approach to judging any dog was first to find 5 things that she thought was positive about the dog. She tried to list what she liked about the dog instead of looking for faults.

This to me was a very revolutional idea! I do try to always find something I like about dogs and people before I find fault.

Parents Pick Prayer Over Docs; Girl Dies RAW STORY
    Published: Friday March 28, 2008

    By ROBERT IMRIE

WESTON, Wis. (AP) — Police are investigating an 11-year-old girl’s death from an undiagnosed, treatable form of diabetes after her parents chose to pray for her rather than take her to a doctor.

An autopsy showed Madeline Neumann died Sunday from diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition that left too little insulin in her body, Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said.

She had probably been ill for about a month, suffering symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness, the chief said Wednesday, noting that he expects to complete the investigation by Friday and forward the results to the district attorney.

The girl’s mother, Leilani Neumann, said the family believes in the Bible and that healing comes from God, but she said they do not belong to an organized religion or faith, are not fanatics and have nothing against doctors.

She insisted her youngest child, a wiry girl known to wear her straight brown hair in a ponytail, was in good health until recently.

“We just noticed a tiredness within the past two weeks,” she said Wednesday. “And then just the day before and that day (she died), it suddenly just went to a more serious situation. We stayed fast in prayer then. We believed that she would recover. We saw signs that to us, it looked like she was recovering.”

Her daughter — who hadn’t seen a doctor since she got some shots as a 3-year-old, according to Vergin — had no fever and there was warmth in her body, she said.

The girl’s father, Dale Neumann, a former police officer, said he started CPR “as soon as the breath of life left” his daughter’s body.

Family members elsewhere called authorities to seek help for the girl.

    P-Mom – re: Heckler’s post.

As has been pointed out, you apparantly didn’t read it. The victim was NEVER blamed; that was of course not the point. But there is no blindness like willfull blindness and self-rightous indignation, so you’ll apparantly never get the point. I did. It’s not that hard. But you and your ilk are so busy propping up strawmen you miss the reality staring you in the face.

And Grateful Dave, yes, in a just and sane world, there would be no need for the woman to defend herself. We would all wish that. But it isn’t. It will never be. As long as human beings are human beings, it never will be. There will always be predators who will take what belongs to others, whether that be their money, their possessions, or their lives.

All of us: you, I, Heckler, and yes even P-mom, are ultimately responsible for our own safety, one way or another. Some take steps to prepare for that moment when the danger comes, hoping and praying that it will never come, but preparing to take the actions necessary if it does.

And some simply whistle in the dark and hope it doesn’t happen to them.

    Which will you be?

Iraqi police in Basra shed their uniforms, kept their rifles and switched sides

Abu Iman barely flinched when the Iraqi Government ordered his unit of special police to move against al-Mahdi Army fighters in Basra.

His response, while swift, was not what British and US military trainers who have spent the past five years schooling the Iraqi security forces would have hoped for. He and 15 of his comrades took off their uniforms, kept their government-issued rifles and went over to the other side without a second thought.

Such turncoats are the thread that could unravel the British Army’s policy in southern Iraq. The military hoped that local forces would be able to combat extremists and allow the Army to withdraw gradually from the battle-scarred and untamed oil city that has fallen under the sway of Islamic fundamentalists, oil smugglers and petty tribal warlords. But if the British taught the police to shoot straight, they failed to instil a sense of unwavering loyalty to the State.

“We know the outcome of the fighting in advance because we already defeated the British in the streets of Basra and forced them to withdraw to their base,” Abu Iman told The Times.

“If we go back a bit, everyone remembers the fight with the US in Najaf and the damage and defeat we inflicted on them. Do you think the Iraqi Army is better than those armies? We are right and the Government is wrong. [Nouri al] Maliki [the Iraqi Prime Minister] is driving his Government into the ground.”

The reason for his apparent switch of sides was simple: the 36-year-old was already a member of the al-Mahdi Army which, like other militias, has massively infiltrated the British-trained police force in the southern oil city. He claimed that hundreds of others from the 16,000-strong force have also defected to the rebels’ ranks.Abu Iman joined the new Iraqi police force after the invasion, joining the Mugawil, a special police unit infamous for brutality, kidnapping and sectarian murders.

“We already heard two weeks ago that we were going to attack the Mahdi Army, so we were ready,” he said. “I decided to take off my uniform and join my brothers and friends in the Mahdi Army. All these years, we were like a scream in the face of the dictator and the occupation.” He said: “I joined the police because I believed we have to protect Basra and save it with our own hands. You can see we were the first fighters to take on Saddam and his regime, the best example being the Shabaniya uprising.”

Abu Iman said that the fighting raging in Basra yesterday was intense because the al-Mahdi Army was operating on its own turf. He was confident that the Shia militia would prevail because its cause was just.

“The Iraqi Army is already defeated from within. They come to Basra with fear in their hearts, knowing they have to fight their brothers, the sons of Iraq, because of an order from Bush and his friends in the Iraq Government. For this reason, all of the battles are going in the Mahdi Army’s favour.”

Despite Bush Claims, US Forces Leading Attacks on Mahdi Army

Tens of thousands of Iraqis took to the streets of Baghdad Thursday to protest the ongoing government crackdown on Shia fighters loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr. More than 130 people have been killed since Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki launched the crackdown on Sadr’s Mahdi Army on Tuesday. Earlier today, Maliki said he would extend a deadline for Mahdi fighters to lay down their arms until April 8th. As the fighting escalated, President Bush continued to sound off on the White House theme that the violence in Iraq marks a sign of US success.

    President Bush:
“This offensive builds on the security gains of the surge and demonstrates to the Iraqi people that their government is committed to protecting them. There is a strong commitment by the central government of Iraq to say that no one is above the law. This operation is going to take some time to complete. And the enemy, you know, will try to fill the TV screens with violence. But the ultimate result will be this: terrorists and extremists in Iraq will know they have no place in a free and democratic society.”

Justin Raimondo writes (at the libertarian site http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=12596)

When [prospective Iraqi leader] Chalabi’s shenanigans were exposed to the light of day, and his extensive interactions with the Iranians were revealed, a theory was floated by several in the intelligence community that we were basically suckered into the Iraq war by its chief beneficiaries, the Iranians. Using their chief asset, the double agent Chalabi, they and their neocon allies fed us ersatz “intelligence” via the various Iraqi “defectors” rounded up by the Iraqi National Congress and paraded across the front page of the New York Times by Judith Miller and her editors.

    *****

That’s a clever theory. Iran’s intelligence fed us the WMD stories so we’d invade and take Saddam out for them.

I don’t entirely believe it, because Bush would have found any pretext to invade, and 9-11 just provided him one.

But certainly the victor in this war was Iran, which got a safer boarder, much higher oil prices, and no way for the US to invade it since we’re bogged down in Iraqmire . . .

Guns??? Picture this:.. You are at a ATM. Someone approaches you with their Gun out and poited at you. They demand you money and your ATM card as well as its pin#. You have a Gun on you for self defense. They need 1 to 3 seconds to pul the trigger. How long will it take you to remove your clothing area covering your gun, get it ouf of the holster, and turn to fire on them? If you have this much time to do all these steps, you have all this time to get away. Self defense is being totally cornered with no exit. 5 too 10 seconds to reach for and move clothes. 5 too 10 seconds too gab and remove gun. 5 too 10 seconds to turn. 5 too 10 seconds to aim. 1 too 2 seconds to fire. 21 seconds minimum to defend yourself with your concealed gun. 42 seconds if you are slower. 21 too 41 seconds against 1 too 2 seconds they use to pull the trigger on the gun they have on you. They then take what they want. They run because they make noise shooting you. Your being shot is the noise that attracts us to witness your being shot and them running. They also take your gun and use it later on someone else. They know have 2 guns. If they mugged you they have mugged before. 99% of all people who Mug others have a RAP Sheet. They have a history of crimes. They are not nervous. They do this all the time. They will call your bluff and shoot you. Thye are aware you might have a gun. They feel justified in defending themselves by shooting you when you go thru you steps leading up to you getting shot.
If you have all this time on your hands and can safely utilize up to 42 seconds, you can use those 42 seconds too be away from the problem. Thus you defended yourself. They dont want to stick around and give you time to react. They dont want a scene. Dont go with them to a isolated area. Dont go into isolated areas. Use you head. Guns are a tool, not the ultimate answer. If guns were the ultimate answer and cops carry them, why do they wear vests? Because bad guys shoot when they have their guns out!! See me above here at this thread from this morning. It gives more good advise. Herbert West III, west.herb@yahoo.com , Tell them they are wrong in court, not thru your autopsy. “”Help”", the police tell them this why you are alive. Autopsies are a quess. Reports are facts. National Research Council:

“Besides technical barriers, economic and societal restrictions will impede the completion of FreedomCAR’s goal of a gradual transition from petroleum-based fuel to hydrogen. The committee acknowledged that the partnership’s Technology Validation Program is a well-conceived path to addressing some of these broader issues, and DOE is currently studying scenarios of the likely transition, including the economics involved. The report suggests extending these studies until 2030-2035 to account for the probable emergence of more mature hydrogen fuel systems and to ensure the most critical factors in production and delivery are understood…”

CBS) Self-avowed “P.R. agent for the planet” Al Gore says those who still doubt that global warming is caused by man – among them, Vice President Dick Cheney – are acting like the fringe groups who think the 1969 moon landing never really happened, or who once believed the world is flat.

The former vice president and former presidential candidate talks to 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl in an interview to be broadcast this Sunday, March 30, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Confronted by Stahl with the fact some prominent people, including the nation’s vice president, are not convinced that global warming is man-made, Gore responds: “You’re talking about Dick Cheney. I think that those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view, they’re almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat,” says Gore. “That demeans them a little bit, but it’s not that far off,” he tells Stahl.

    Hey Ben,

We use to have O2 generators on the boats, made O2 at 3000#. Hydrogen was a by product, pumped it overboard.

Takes a lot of energy to separate the little hydrogen atoms from the little oxygen atoms. A coal fired electric plant nearby would be quite handy!

Hank – and therein lies the problem. My solution tends along the lines of my ’swords-to-plowshares’ nuclear energy scenario. Also, of course, wind, solar, etc.

One idea I really find intriguing is this: if I can get it hot enough entropy will out-weigh enthanly and the free energy of dissociation will become negative. Then the water will split without going through electricity even though it is endothermic.

NAACP: We are still relevant, yo!

“TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida branch of the NAACP says a bill that would ban students from wearing their pants too low could lead to more legal trouble for black males.

Orlando Senator Gary Siplin’s bill was approved 28-11 last week by the Florida Senate.

The bill calls for no criminal sanctions, but it would prohibit students from wearing pants low so that they expose undergarments.
Violators would receive a warning for a first offense, and suspensions from school would be issued for each subsequent infraction.

NAACP President Adora Obi Nweze called it a “clearly discriminatory bill.’’”

The beauty of hydrogen is you can provide the energy with wind power. It’s the way to store the power of the wind, though I admit at this time not economically feasible. A Gove county farmer has already done it. He used old combines reels to harvest the wind, alternators to produce the electricty to split the hydrogen in water from the 02. Stored both products in old oil field tanks. He’s dead now.

A super battery would be a better way, and right now, we probably have the tech to run a light car about 100 miles with lithium-ion batteries. Stanford has just announced a way to store ten times the lithium atoms in the same amount of space by using nano wires, but how much of an improvement over todays tech that will translate too is anyone’s guess. The most wide eyed claim a full ten-fold increase, which would mean one lithium battery could store 40 times as much power as a lead-acid battery of equal weight. I’m guessing about 4 times as much, which would be good enough to make plug-in cars very feasible.

Nathan, time how long it takes you to pull out a water pistol from a concealed area on your person. Also have someone have one pointed at you. See who gets wet first!!!! People need to ask the Police and get the opinion clarified. If I am wrong, you are wrong, why are they shot? I am not there, nor are you. The Police know stats and odds. Again, how fast can you pull a water pistol out before your buddy gets you wet??? Hopefully they consult with the Police and get what is considered viable opinions then!!! Let’s discuss a few things about self defense:

People training in self defense aim for a time of 1.5 seconds to both draw their weapon from concealed carry and place two shots into a target at 7 yards.

Even if you are not well trained it would only push up your time to a maximum of 4-5 seconds unless something gets hung up.

I can draw my pistol from the concealed carry and place two well aimed shots into a target in about 2 seconds.

The problem with creating such a scenario as Herb did at the ATM is that it limits the discussion. Usually, most anti gun people will purposefully come up with some scenario as above in the hopes of showing how futile having a concealed weapon is.

I do not presume to know every situation that could come up. Carry concealed gives you the choice and ability to defend yourself if you need to or can. There is not anyone saying that you HAVE TO try to shoot or that you can somehow beat the criminal.

However, if you are trained, all it takes is for someone to be distracted for a second and you can both draw your weapon from concealment and fire aimed shots.

Ultimately, if your life is being threatened or the life of another is being threatened you have every right to defend yourself or that person.

Depending on the situation you will have to use your judgment on if you should or are able to use your weapon to defend yourself.

When someone is threatening your life with a deadly weapon there is no guarantee that they will just take your money and leave you alone. Every threat should be taken seriously.

You should be observant of your surroundings. When you act like a victim you will be one. If you act prepared and you are prepared you will not be a victim and if someone does mess with you, you will know what to do and how to respond.

Criminals are like any other predator. They look for the easy target, the weakest people, the ones they know they can attack easily.

The question you have to ask yourself is are you a sheep or a sheep dog?

If you have no means to protect yourself and are not prepared to do so, just go BAA and hope someone like my father and I are there to protect you.

    Posted March 28, 2008 at 5:06 pm | Permalink

    Herb,

I am not disputing the argument that someone having a gun pointed at you obviously has the advantage.

However, the advantage you have is time.

The criminal doesn’t know you have a gun unless he pats you down and finds it.

You have all the time to choose when or if you can draw and use your pistol.

That is the advantage of carrying concealed and why it is silly to simply say we should all be open carry.

The element of surprise is yours with concealed carry.

Your times on how long it takes to draw a concealed weapon are absurd.

Here is an article by an expert in self defense with a pistol on times:

I’ll toss in another idea here. I have seen suggestions that ATMs be programmed so that if you enter your PIN backwards it work as usual – spit out the money etc. However, it would also activate a silent alarm and the camera feed. That way, as nathan manages to distract the guy and plug him we get a good video of a bad guy biting the dust.

Good article Nathan… It says CC with a garment covering is a lot slower than no garment, AND with hands free.

Now, the scenario described has the victim at an ATM machine, which would preclude hands free usage… ALSO, your article, as good as it is, does NOT take into account a Perp with a gun already drawn, an aimed AT you!!

I guess that isnt a part of the type of training the Article expert takes part in…

Would be interesting to see an article on what happens when the victim looks and sees a drawn gun, pointing directly at him…

“I can draw my pistol from the concealed carry and place two well aimed shots into a target in about 2 seconds.”

Nice to know you are qualified to guest star on “Gunsmoke”.

Herb IS correct. In most cases, conceal carry people will be caught by surprise and have no time to use their weapon to STOP a crime.

They just have the ability to avenge the crime.

For my purposes? I don’t live in the best neighborhood. So I carry two wallets. One with my money and stuff. The other has a dollar, some Monopoly money and a note that reads “I could have shot you while you were running away. But even the contents of my real wallet are not worth your life. I hope you find a safer way to get by. Good luck.”

IF I am ever confronted, I’ll just throw the phony wallet and run. By the time the accoster discovers he has been had, I will be safely away.

    Posted March 28, 2008 at 5:20 pm | Permalink

    Ben,

    I’ll add this as well.

Part of self defense is being smart and not placing yourself into dangerous situations.

Don’t use an ATM in the middle of the night in an isolated or poorly lit area.

Try to plan ahead on how much cash you will need so that you don’t set yourself up for needing to use an ATM in less than desirable conditions.

Use ATMS at the bank during daylight hours or in public places with people around.

These are all things which will help keep you out of a bad situation to begin with.

Self Defense doesn’t begin when you are being held up.

Self defense begins with your attitude about how you walk through life and the ability for you to pay attention and be prepared.

  129. Nathan
    Posted March 28, 2008 at 5:29 pm | Permalink

“…but had also taught them that a concealing garment would add a good half second. This was proven here. Average time ran 2.12 seconds.”

From the article. Having a concealed weapon only adds a half second to your draw time.

Herb is not even close to how long it takes to draw a weapon.

If you want to believe him and the other resident nut cases on weapons, then good luck to you.

I take self defense very seriously. This is not some partisan issue where Nathan is wrong simply because he is Nathan.

I teach self defense, I teach Marksmanship, I am an authority in this area.

    Hey Ben,

Ive been to several self-defense classes with my hand gun. The reverse pin number scenario is a good idea.

In Herb’s example above the element of surprise would be with me. I have a quick release holster and it is on my left side. At an ATM, it would be easy to distract a thief. If you have your wallet out drop it. Or, drop your money. Shield your right arm with your money, turn to your left, fire through your clothes.

The classes I’ve taken teach you how to fire in different scenarios. You should avoid at all costs situations that would require you to use your weapon. When the thief has the drop on you, ypu are out of options, kill him.

WASHINGTON — The FBI has narrowed its focus to “about four” suspects in the 6 1/2-year investigation of the deadly anthrax attacks of 2001, and at least three of those suspects are linked to the Army’s bioweapons research facility at Fort Detrick in Maryland, FOX News has learned.

Among the pool of suspects are three scientists — a former deputy commander, a leading anthrax scientist and a microbiologist — linked to the research facility, known as USAMRIID.

The FBI has collected writing samples from the three scientists in an effort to match them to the writer of anthrax-laced letters that were mailed to two U.S. senators and at least two news outlets in the fall of 2001, a law enforcement source confirmed.

Probably the only thing Herb said which was true is that you NEVER go with a criminal anywhere.

If you have no means of defending yourself, then you give them your money and whatever else they want.

When they tell you to go with them, you say no.

It is much better to make a stand where you are than be killed and tortured in some basement where no one will ever find you.

I just figure if a perp has a gun pointed at me, and it is ready fire, that he pretty much has the drop on me, unless i have a buddy with me in the bushes hiding or something. Just seems safer to believe that he wants the money, and does not want to kill anybody. Still seems to me if he has a nevous trigger finger, the second I make any move, he shoots!! If all he wants is money, then I am out a few bucks. If not, I am dead either way.

Interesting story on the anthrax attacks. I have wondered why that investigation was so stalled.

I went to college with Steven Hatfill. I remember him well; he stood out in a 1970’s college campus.

In my alumni newspaper the lady who does the school PR work said that in one day she got calls from CNN, Time Magazine, the Washington Post, the New York Times, ABC, NBC, and CBS — but not the kind of calls she wanted.

Police would have shot the thief as well.

It’s very unlikely a thief with a plastic gun would try to rob an armed Police officer.

Police don’t usually kill by firing a concealed weapon through their uniforms as they turn around.

If Police arrive at a robbery in progress, they usually, from a safe place, order the thief to drop their weapon.

Sorry, been busy the last few hours. Steven Hatfill had a flat-top hair cut, would everyday run for a while in his shorts and combat boots (regardless of the weather), he would rappel down various tall buildings on campus. He was more of a manly man than Hank or Nathan ever dreamed about. In the 70’s such folk were pretty rare on college campuses. Steven said he was a Ranger, in the Army – I am pretty sure that was dispelled, but he wouldn’t be the first vet to embellish his military record.

He graduated from Southwestern College with honors (he was a smart kid as I recall) and went to medical school in Africa somewhere. I always thought it weird that one would use one’s medical training to develop biological weapons – which is what Hatfill did. Sort of invalidates one’s hippocratic oathe, it would seem to me.

Those are the highlights, square peg…

    Chas,

Did you know that the original KU ended up being K State?

The point of the website is to show the following in simple form:

    Allah = One God

    Yahweh = One God

Allah’s character and substance is not equal to the character and substance of Yahweh because they are different Gods.

Therefore Allah is not the same God as Yahweh.

Yahweh is the God of the Christians today.

  244. Posted March 28, 2008 at 10:26 pm | Permalink

K-State was/is a land grant University… It started out life as a College of the Congregationl Church.

And if you insist that Allah and Yahweh are two different Gods, then that is your belief, and you are entitled to it.

There was only about a half dozen of us that made it through hung over.

The boy is another matter, he is a lot tougher than he looks. I wouldn’t try to get his money at an ATM if he wasn’t armed!

  246. Posted March 28, 2008 at 10:28 pm | Permalink

“Allah’s character and substance is not equal to the character and substance of Yahweh because they are different Gods.”

Allah is merely the Arabic word for “God.” Whether you call Him God, Yahweh or Allah, all three versions are one and the same – the God of Abraham.

Ex – Ala. Governor Comes Home From Prison
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Filed at 12:39 a.m. ET

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman returned to his home late Friday, nine months to the day after he was shackled and taken off to federal prison on corruption charges.

Looking thin, pale and tired, the 62-year-old Siegelman met with reporters briefly in a parking lot near his home and gave a short statement. He did not take questions.

”It’s been a long nine months since I was handcuffed and shackled and placed in the back of a Chevy sedan and taken to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta. I lost my freedom, but I never lost my faith,” Siegelman said.

Siegelman was released from a federal prison in Oakdale, La., on an appeal bond at about noon and arrived in Birmingham at about 10 p.m. He was wearing the same tattered shirt he had on when he left the prison in Louisiana.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday ordered Siegelman released while his conviction is being appealed.

”When I heard the news the 11th Circuit had granted my motion, I thanked God once more,” the former Democratic governor said.

Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years on his conviction in a corruption case. The order to release him came on the same day the House Judiciary Committee announced plans for Siegelman to testify before Congress in a probe of possible political meddling in federal prosecutions.

Siegelman and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy were convicted in June 2006. Federal prosecutors accused Siegelman of appointing Scrushy to a hospital regulatory board in exchange for Scrushy arranging $500,000 in contributions to Siegelman’s campaign for a statewide lottery. The defense has argued there was no personal gain or quid-pro-quo in the deal.

In its ruling, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the former governor had raised ‘’substantial questions of fact and law” in challenging his conviction.

Siegelman attorney David McDonald said the former governor called him two or three times in the first couple of hours after his release.

”For nine months it has felt like a part of us were in the prison with him,” McDonald said. ”To have him be able to call whenever he wants, we have been like a couple of school girls on the phone.”

The House Judiciary Committee has said it wants Siegelman to testify when it probes claims of selective prosecution by the Justice Department.

Siegelman has maintained that certain Republicans targeted him after he was elected governor in 1998. The House committee has begun reviewing his case as part of a broader investigation into allegations of political influence in the work of U.S. attorneys.

The committee hopes to hear from Siegelman in May. Committee Chairman John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, believes Siegelman ”would have a lot to add to the committee’s investigation into selective prosecution,” committee spokeswoman Melanie Roussell said.

    *******

Seigleman is a Democratic governor targetted by the KKKarl Rove ratf***ing of the Justice Department. Some of the Justice prosecutors were fired by Rove because they wouldn’t witch-hunt people like Seigleman.

BTW, Seigleman’s prosecution was based on conflicting testimony by a known criminal. The defense was not able to bring up the contradictions in the case because the judge is a Rove wing-nut too.

If these trials took place anywhere but in Alabama, they would be laughed out of court . . .

Ah yes, the two resident “Christians” who are so quick to say how wrong I am for saying Christ is the key to salvation.

I bet you don’t even see the irony in that.

Pronouncing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is not pride or self rightous.
