Obama speaks out on Wright

obamahandsbyface3.jpgBarack Obama has written a blog on Huffington Post responding to the firestorm over inflammatory remarks made by his pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Obama writes that “I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies.”
He says that Wright “has never been my political advisor; he’s been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.”
He concludes: “I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be president of the United States.”
It’s a good response: Calm, balanced, providing context. Obama reportedly is going on several TV programs, including Fox, to nip this in the bud.

Yup. The Obama-haters have piled on, and now he has to respond to something that was never his problem.

    Mission accomplished.

Of course, this denunciation by Obama-man will do nothing to quiet the Swift-boat smears.

I still do not know how much the offensive material was as compared to the whole of Wright’s teaching. Nor do I understand how one could spend 20 years under someone’s teachings that were so opposed to your own. However, I don’t rally have to understrand it. I have to decide whether or not Barak Obama holds these beliefs. He has stated to the contrary. I accept his word.

    I’d say I’m sorry Capn.

But I’m not. As I say elsewhere, I’ve been aware of this for some time. I would imagine the Clinton campaign has too.

None of us started this ball rolling. It starts MOSTLY with Sean Hannity and some right wing bloggers.

But really, this should have come out louder and sooner. And STILL Obama is handling it all wrong.

He’s trying to spin it AND bury it. You can’t do both!

His initial reaction SHOULD have been something like…

“Well my faith is deeply personal to me. I don’t consider it reflective of my service to community in any but the most positive way. And my record reflects that. My pastor has on occasion been…. passionate. We recall that Jesus was passionate when confronting the moneychangers in the temple. But I will stand for my own words and you are of course free to ask Pastor Wright about his. I think it is unfortunate when conflicts as to faith are introduced into the political arena. And I for one want no part of it.”

We saw Trent Lott brought down for simply saying something nice about a fellow Senator as that Senator went into retirement.

We saw another Senator brought down for making a comment about “Macaca” that was not intended to be racial at all.

Rush Limbaugh was hounded out of a TV Sports Show for simply stating that the press was going too easy on a Black Quarterback.

Look, this is the world that LIBERALISM created!

Live by the sword, DIE by the sword —

Liberalism created this over sensitive, race and gender charged society.

Get rid of Wright, and the Jacksons and Sharptons and Farahkans (and the Wrights) get mad at Obama.

Get rid of Wright, and Obama angers his Black base.

But, it seems that choice has been made, by Obama.

The Democrats are now left with two choices that will not work.

Nominate Hillary, and the Black vote is in real doubt.

Nominate Obama and go down in flames!

Perhaps? This might make Obama a bit more humble, and open to Veep?

I guess in your universe, saying that if a pro-segregationist had won the Presidency, we would have “avoided all these problems” (i.e. the Civil Rights movement) = ’saying something nice about a fellow Senator heading into retirement.’

For somebody who, if I may say so, Econ101, has on mroe than one occasion displayed a rather enlightened racial awareness, you sure are willing to spin Trent Lott’s overtly racist comment.

As for who “created” this “racially charged society,” it was, not, in fact, liberals who did so: rather, it was those who enforced a racist ideology of white supremacy upon Africans and their descendents for 350 years. Blaming liberals for a racially-charged atmosphere is, well, LUDICROUS, given that it was liberals, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, who led the effort to end segregation.

How often do I cuss and call you names?

Most rational people, on that basis alone, would say that you are rather beneath me, and should be ignored.

You add nothing of value here, only insults and name calling and your own brand of bigotry.

It makes you feel better to look down on other people.

    Interesting,

We are seeing the complete collapse of the democrat party’s ability to field a viable candidate!

Hillary will probably win PA, adding merit to her assertion that Obama can’t win in the general election. She’s right, he can’t.

However, if by some typical brilliant democrat political ploy, she manages to steal the nomination from the mulatto messiah she won’t be able to get enough of the black vote to win in the general either!

Has to really suck to be a democrat!

“Look, this is the world that LIBERALISM created!”

And this, folks, is exactly what Harry Frankfurt was talking about in his book, On Bullshit.

And I love the parsing of words in how you sum up every one of those incidents.

    Obama did not say:

This country would have been better off if his pastor had prevailed in his presidential contest (you know, when Strom Thurmond was trying to defend segregation).

Obama did not use a racial slur against someone holding a camera on him (Econ’s claim that it was not racial is the very epitome of “bullsh*t”-saying what you want to be true based on your beliefs without any regard to whether it is true, or even credible).

Obama did not say a quarterback was overrated because of his race (a very stupid thing to say about Donovan McNabb).

What an excellent demonstration of reflexive shilldom.

My best friend, through Jr. High and High School, was a Tae Kwon Do Black Belt, 10 years older than me. (My favorite sparring partner was Black, by the way).

While still in Marine Reserves I took a job at Safeway, and often helped the off duty police officers and security guards. I even made 2, seperate “officer down” 9-11 calls.

I am a former EMT. I have given CPR twice. I used to know most of the cops in town. There were a few I never got along with very well.

After pulling a drug crazed shoplifter off of a security guard, I was asked to join a group of thugs.

Yes, they wanted me for what I used to be, a better than average street brawler.

    I was offended and angry.

I told the cops that these punks were beating up gays in the park.

I made no effort to conceal my contempt for what they were doing.

And, the only reason I ever brought any of this up was to refute your constant attempts to paint me as something I am not.

    And JR

I won that fight, in court.

I was never charged with a crime.

I won a lawsuit, filed against me, by Tiller.

And, Tiller even said, in writing, that I was not guilty of any crime.

And, JR, why, when I was President of the Wichita Traffic Commission, after this event, did the Wichita Eagle never attack Mayor Knight for appointing me to that post?

And, JR, why, when my fellow Commissioners voted unanimously to make me President of the Wichita Traffic Commission, did no one at the Eagle, and no TV reporter, ever question that decision?

Because I did the right thing, JR.

I stood against Operation Rescue and told them NOT to use kids in their protest.

I begged the kids to get out from under the cars.

And, I told the truth in Court, repeatedly.

And, the Judge I did battle with soon left the bench.

    You lost this fight, JR.

    You lost it badly.

You are an insignificant and very sick person.

A human being deserving of civil rights yes, but— I have no fear that you would ever win against me, in any courtroom, in any bar room, in any ring, in any classroom, in any debate.

You “win” by chasing off the opposition.

Then, you think you own the Blog, because everyone who is left agrees with you.

(Well, not really, nobody else but you wants to legalize prostitution, blow up Mexicans with land mines, and abolish the State of Israel)

That is sick, to want to silence all opposition.

This Blog will only have ONE poster, YOU, if you really want everyone who posts to agree with you.

You are a sand box bully and nothing more.

It was not an “ethics violation” — the office Faxed our report and it did not all arrive.

Yes, I should have called, personally, to make sure that they had every page.

    What was the “crime”??

    HUH?

An anal, exact, spitting hairs guy like YOU, Doug, should be more careful.

And, actually, a secretary of the Party was responsible, an employee of mine, at the time, for sending the FAX. The Party accepted responsibility and paid the fine, not me.

I stand by what I said at the time: The report DID arrive on time. It was just not everything that the Ethics panel later said that they wanted.

I thought they had the whole thing, the first time.

The Secretary claims she called, and asked if the FAX was received, and the answer was “YES” —

It was not worth going to court.

The Party paid the fine and accepted responsibility.

    Big deal!

    And Dougie Do Right —

    “Right Angle” asks –

“Does anyone besides me see any similarity between Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright?”

    Uhm.

    No.

    You’re the only one.

I do see similarities with the Reverend Wright and Paster John Hagee (who McCain is “proud” to claim as a supporter), who says the Roman Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon. And I see similarities with the Reverend Mister Parsley who thinks “America was established to wipe out Islam.”

Jeremiah Wright is a battle-scarred veteran of the civil rights wars of the 1960s and 70s. Barack Obama represents one aspect of the fruits of Wright’s labors and acknowleges the struggles of African Americans of Wright’s generation.

But no one can rationally associate Obama’s political philosophy with Wright’s any more than one should assume McCain believes Catholics are a demonic cult or America was established to commit genocide against all Muslims.

This is a non-issue; a silly distraction on a slow news week. And it reeks of Republic Party desparation. The whole “Obama is the Muslim Manchurian Candidate” didn’t work, so let’s attack the out-of-context words of the man who led Obama to Christ.

Get your lies straight, for god’s sake! Make up your mind!

    Ah…

As a supporter of Obama, let me say that this so-called Reverend is very vile, obscene and offensive. I have never heard remarks like that made in the pulpit of a church and if I ever did, I would get up and walk out the door and never look back. I think Obama has lots of explaining to do. I still support him fully but my comfort level has declined a bit. I want to know exactly what his relationship is with this filthy and disgusting preacher and what it will be in the future. He says he was not present in church when these remarks were made but it is a tad bit hard for me to believe that he did not hear about the remarks until recently. I know what my pastor says every week because, when I miss a service, I either catch it on TV or buy the CD from the bookstore. I also want to know if he exposed his wife and 2 kids to this hate monger.

    Boxlick,

You didn’t learn much from your homeschooling, evidently. Let’s review, shall we, Boxlick?

Political officeholder = someone who holds elective political. That is, someone who received popular support for his or her office, whether legislative or executive.

Political appointee = someone who had his or her executive or legislative office given to him or her.

The fact that Condoleeza Rice and Clarence Thomas belong to the latter and not the former category pretty much says it all about how ignorant you are, Boxlick. Or how intellectually dishonest, and how willing to say whatever you have to in order to avoid admitting your ignorance and lack of grounds.

Thomas and Rice, you wrote, “didn’t require some give away entitlement to accomplish their very successful careers.”

Oh, really? Wasn’t Thomas admitted to the College of the Holy Cross on a race-based preference system?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Thomas

And with regard to Condoleeza Rice’s promotion from Associate Professor to Provost of Stanford University, former President Gerhard Casper said that it

“would be disingenuous for me to say that the fact that she was a woman, the fact that she was black … weren’t in my mind.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoleezza_Rice

    So, Boxlick, let’s review:

    -Elective office = earning something
-Appointed office = having something handed to you

That the two most prominent African-American Republicans belong to the latter and not the former category says everything we need to about how the Party sees them: as servants and minions.

“Compare this thread to the Ferraro thread and see what I mean. THEN tell me about journalists “in the tank” for Obama.”

The comparison is easy. Ferraro, one thread.
Wright, two threads, one after the other. Not really a good example of downplaying.

That being said, it is interesting that Scholfield focused on the people (like those as Faux) who brought Wright’s comments up while he focused on Ferraro’s behavior. However, Wright’s comments were actually made awhile ago. Ferraro made her comments recently and DIG keep digging when she should have apologiezed and moved on.

    Scholfield probably
