Hillary Clinton now calls her story about dodging sniper bullets in Bosnia a “misstatement.†But let’s call it what it is — a whopper.
Clinton said last week, “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.â€
That’s a pretty vivid memory and effective story, if you want to prove your commander-in-chief mettle. The only problem is, it’s false.
CBS and other video footage from the time shows Clinton walking normally off the plane with her daughter, Chelsea, smiling and shaking hands with dignitaries and an 8-year-old child.
War is hell? Never mind.
This wasn’t just a slip of the tongue. Clinton has told the story several times on the stump to buttress a central claim she’s been making — that she has more foreign policy experience than Barack Obama.
Instead, the exposed fib supports those who argue that Clinton exaggerates her credentials and experience.

I will agree that there is a major difference between Clinton’s apparent lie and McCain’s mis-speak about Iran. However, Clinton lied to show experience that she really doesn’t have, and McCain has been the candidate that backs the war and is campaigning on experience. His faux paus was really just as bad from my perspective because ALL he has to campaign on is the war.
Shouldn’t McCain know the major players in the war he has been promoting for the last 5 years by heart? Isn’t it a lie if he says he knows the intricacies of the war, and then misspeaks about something so rudimentary that it shows him for the liar that he is?

As far as Catholic bashing goes, he’s a protestant minister. Many fundemental Christians believe the reign of the Catholic Church fulfills the prophacy of Daniel.

The “base” you refer to who would respond favorably to Hagee turn off the very moderate, swing, and foul weather voters that the Republicans will need this election. A lot of Republicans see this (and in fact, some prominient Republicans started to predict this back after 2004, when the Christian Right was riding high). McCain is going to have to hope that the “base” accepts him as being better than the alternative, while enough middle voters swing to him. However, this is a tightrope. The “base” is a negative this election year, and it was the “base”, as much if not more than the Iraq war, that hurt the Republicans in 2006 (particularly here in Kansas).

Obama’s response to the Wright situation was, in my opinion, exceptional (his speech directly addressed Wright’s comments, but also the historical context, and he did not do the politically expediant thing-which I suspect may help him). Factcheck called it on Hillary Clinton’s Bosnia comments weeks ago. It is significant that the political media, once again, are not doing their jobs. They don’t even care whether a candidate’s statements are truthful or not, they care about how effective they are (for example, the “100 years war” comment falsely attributed to John McCain-one that Barack Obama recycled- should have been addressed). Their lazy and investigative journalism on candidates in office seems to be almost dead, substituted by bloggers with attitude who get occasional hits but then also turn around and put out a series to total unsubstantiated rumors. If we had the current corporate media structure in 1970 that we have now, I am sure that Nixon would have served out his second term.

What sticks out for me on that DD214 is the amount of active duty service time. 3 months and 27 days.

Jimmy Carter established a program to revise discharge paperwork.
I never said there was a “crime” involved in Kerry’s DD-214 itself.
You get TWO sets of discharge papers, if you go from Active Duty to Reserve Duty. If you notice, the DD-214 shows that Kerry was discharged to the Naval Reserves.
That DD-214 also says that Kerry’s “Terminal Date of Reserve Duty” would be in February of 1972.
Navy Secretary Claytor signed off on a Board of Officers decision later granting Kerry an Honorable Discharge. That Discharge was from Reserve Duty. Such a Board would not even meet, under the law, unless a Veteran requested an upgraded discharge, under the Carter Amnesty Plan.
Navy Secretary Claytor, again, served under Jimmy Carter. There is NO record, at all, of any Navy Reserve Duty for John Kerry, at least none has been released.
That John Kerry was Honorably Discharged, from Active Duty to Reserve Duty, is not challenged by me, at this point.
I do challenge the DD-214 in that it lists a false award. There is NO SUCH THING as a “Silver Star with a Combat V”.
I also remind you that Jimmy Carter began his Presidential term in 1977.
How can Kerry’s “Terminal Date of Reserve Duty” be in 1972, if Kerry’s “Honorable Discharge” under the Claytor letter, was in 1978:

Kerry should have been discharged from the Naval Reserve 5 years PRIOR to Navy Secretary Claytor even being appointed by Jimmmy Carter.
Why was Claytor involved in Kerry’s discharge?
Again, a “Board of Officers” only meets to upgrade a previous discharge, under the statutes and under the Claytor letter that KERRY posted.

During the War, any Clerk assigned to such duty would have noticed the error rather quickly. Long after the war is over, there would have been less experience with such things.

As for the “Winter Soldier” rant that follows, it is a classic example, once again, of what moral philosopher Harry Frankfurt calls bullsh*t. You start out with a predetermined conclusion “Kerry is bad, Kerry is not to be trusted” and go from there. What bullsh*t is, according to Harry Frankfurt (and really, this is pretty much the popular definition as well) is saying things one wants to believe, or others to believe, without regard to whether it is true. This distinguishes this process from lying. Lying is the avoidance of the truth, which reguires someone to be aware of and even care about the truth. With bullsh*t, the actual truth is irrelevant. The predetermined conclusion is more relevant.
For example, the fact that people lied (and continue to lie) about being in Viet Nam (or other war theaters) is well known. That some people told false stories about what they witnessed in Viet Nam is also not surprising. Also, the sense of betrayal that many Viet Nam veterans feel towards John Kerry is undeniably real (which is why the Swift Boat lies got such traction).
However, the discovery of falsehoods about “atrocities” in Viet Nam does not invalidate those atrocities that have been documented. What it does mean is that every individual story about an atrocity, and every person who claims to have witnessed such a thing, should not be taken at face value. However, neither should they be dismissed out of hand. And when the source of the claim, or the source of the dismissal of the claim, both clearly have agendas, say, with regards to the war in question, then immediate demands for collaboration are called for. Why? Because people and organizations with agendas arising from pre-determined conclusions are susceptable to bullsh*t and lies that support those conclusions. They don’t screen their sources. I am sure that anti-war organizations are quite vulnerable to this (in fact, there are some “winter stories” going on about Iraq that have been discredited or clearly exaggerated-including some passed on by Congressman Murtha). However, those who support the war and automatically assume that their opponents are all liars and unpatriotic are just as vulnerable to bullsh*t and lies that support their pre-determined conclusions.
So what are the sorts of things that should set off one’s bullsh*t detector?
One, posting links without any identification of the bias of the source. Paul routinely links to sources like NewsMax, the New York Sun, and Human Events. Now, to be fair, there are some people here who do the same thing from sites like the Daily Kos. However, I think Paul stands out in his uncritical linking to such obviously partisan and indeed, careless sites.
Two, logical leaps that clearly arise from things that are self evident from the posters head. It is one thing to point out that Kerry regurgitated some claims that later turned out to be false. It is quite another to make the leap that…

Embellishing wartime experiences is an ancient, if untrustworthy, tradition. Having spent the latter part of the Bosnia War in Tuzla, I remember many a late hour hearing graphic war stories from both local Tuzlans and refugees from Eastern Bosnia. Many even made their own grainy home movies of the war.
But when Hillary embellished her 1996 trip to Tuzla on the campaign trail, it really, really, really pissed me off. Not only does it smack of the worst kind of war tourism, it also insults the real experiences of the locals and internationals who fought daily just to survive.
