Cartoon contest contenders

contestCongratulations to Don Bennett of Arkansas City, this week’s caption contest winner. Here are some of the others:
Karen Jerman of Wichita: “Now that is what I call splitting hares!”
Karen Wallace of Wichita: “Talk about road rage!” and also “Give me a call at 3:00 in the morning. . . .”
Richard Hopper of Derby: “Looks like the Dems are having a bad-hare day!”
Cliff Jayne of Wichita: “Where did I park my Airbus?”
Richard Julius of Belle Plaine: “March Madness! It’s fun to watch!”
Janet Cook of Wichita: “100 years right here!”
And this fine entry, which came in after the deadline so was disqualified, from Travis Metcalf: “There you go, Hillary! Give him that Wright hook!”

It would be interesting for Crowson’s cartoons to have a comment section under them.

That has to be the lamest caption ‘winner’.

Great Cartoon Richard! It had a lot of potential. I figured that with the right caption (mine of course), it would rival a Jim Borgman creation and maybe go nation-wide. (A caption contest cartoon going nation-wide – imagine that!)
I’m surprised that after drawing it, you didn’t take that one on yourself and just scratch us out a sketch of the lady stuck to the toilet seat. (Don’t picture that.)
Once again, I’m disappointed that my caption wasn’t even listed. (What’d you list, six people and a DQ? A DQ?!! Come on!)
Of the captions listed, I would have to give it to Richard Hopper and his “…BAD-HARE Day!”
    Maybe next time.

Well, to tell the truth, I was a bit disappointed in the overall quality of the captions this time. Maybe the drawing just didn’t inspire folks’ creativity… But I liked the winning one for its inclusion of the Airbus angle. I always like it when the readers take off in new directions which the drawing doesn’t seem to point to. I’m still puzzling over what most ignites reader participation — local issues? Pocketbook issues? National? Sometimes we’ll get 100 or so entries, sometimes only a few dozen. After three years or so of this, I still haven’t figured it out. Oh, well. Thanks to those hearty souls who continue to enter. And on the toilet issue, Sour Grapes, I know that story had initial “What the hell???” appeal to people, especially cartooners like me, but it was tragic on closer reading, and I lost my sense of humor about it. Sorry. Hate it when that happens.

I enjoyed dealing with the “National” issue of this cartoon. It seems like most of the contest cartoons are more “Local” in nature. Your daily cartoons, in general, have been particularly good lately.

As long as you might be accepting of late entries on this latest cartoon, here’s another ;)

I GOT THE CALL AT 3 AM!

Hah! Like it. I really lean toward local issues. I enjoy the response and, truth is, lots of tooners are drawing about the absurdities of national politics. I think we have enough crazies in Kansas to keep a warehouse-full of cartoonists busy. I’ve got ‘em all to myself!
