Violence against homeless is skyrocketing

homelessNot only do the homeless need protection against the elements, they also need protection from teenagers who think it’s fun to attack vulnerable people. Nationally, there were more than 142 unprovoked attacks on homeless people in 2007, a 65 percent increase since 2005, the New York Times reported. And most of the attackers were teenagers and young adults. Why the increase and why such inhumanity? “I think it reflects a lack of respect for the homeless that has reached such extreme proportions that homeless people aren’t viewed as people,” said Maria Foscarinis, executive director of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty.

Where do kids learn this? From their parents.

Some of the meanest kids have parents who think their kids are better than everyone else.
    They raise bullies, alpha males.

Yeah, there has been a huge upsurge in Wichita for violence against homeless. Dozens of gang members just throttle the bejeebers out of the homeless.

The opinion of the homeless has changed from the days of the depression when a good deal of Americans were suffering and the common people reached out to aid them. Feeling the sentiment of “But by the grace of God goes I!”, to one of seeing them as lazy, mentally ill or a surplus of useless humans. But each does have their own stories as to how it happened and not all have to do with drugs or drinking.

I still remember watching an interview where an entire family was living in their car. The Husband was laid off and the wife became ill. They loss their home and it was the middle eighties when there was a growing divide between those whom had a job and those whom did not. It is frightening how easy it is to fall that far.
Welfare becomes a trap where there is no climbing out if you want to. To make matters worst the lack of an address and phone number leave you undesirable to be hired so the problem continues.

At to why the upswing in crimes against the homeless, that may take more space then this blog would allow.
And my opinion would enflame many who like the status quo. I will hint though, at one time there was a moral core within the home who kept everyone there in line and provided an example for being a better person. But they did not feel that was a good job to have so they went in search of a better employment.

142 attacks nationwide and the NYT wants to make it into an epidemic. Even if 0.5% of the roughly 300 million people in the US are homeless that gives 1.5 million homeless. Of which 142 were attacked. So take 142 over 1,500,000 and get a really small number. Heck, multiply that by 10 just to try to cover the unreported attacks.

Finally, compare that to the assault rate of other groups. Is it too much to ask that journalists give a little perspective when reporting?

  5. Posted February 17, 2008 at 8:50 am | Permalink

The point is not so much how many have been attacked compared to the general population. The point is that we have in this country a growing number of teenagers and young adults preying on the most vulnerable people in our society for no other reason than “fun” or “sport”. Who is next? Senior citizens.. disabled folks… young girls? This kind of behavior needs to be stopped NOW with the harshest penalties possible. By that I mean hundreds of hours of community service, actually serving the very people they harmed at shelters or at places like the Lord’s Diner. It is a blight on our society brought about by the total failure of the family unit. These young people are not being taught to respect themselves, let alone anybody else.

Don’t expect a reasoned response from the conseriatives on this, they think most of the homeless people are homeless by choice. Kanassam is right, what is disturbing is the mind set of those young people that are attacking the homeless.

Leave it to the WE Bloggers to make light of a very serious problem. There is nothing any more wrong with this generation than the last. Unfortunately, OUR generation has failed our kids by sacrificing their time and care to the gods of pride, power, prestige and entertainment. We would rather get that promotion and work 80 hours a week than be there for parent/teacher conferences or when little Johnny performs in the school play! We would rather come home and watch TV rather than help with the homework, or share dinner time with the kids. Or, worst of all, we would rather dump our spouse and kids because we do not want to be tied down anymore! Children learn by example and we are teaching them that failure is unacceptable and that our fellow man is not worthy of respect or assistance if they are down and out. When the going gets tough.. get out before you have to make a sacrifice. It’s all about YOU.
    Like the Chase Bank commercial:
    I want it all… I want it all… I want it all… and I want it NOW!!

Bassed on JR’s “logic”, I can PROVE he is a pedophile. All I have to do is take some unrelated facts, and related them..and voila.

Let’s see..there are pedophiles that live in Wichita. JR lives in Wichita.

There are pedophiles that use the computer. JR uses the computer.

There are pedophiles that are awake during the day. JR is awake during the day.

There are pedophiles that use the word “and”, JR has used that very same word here.

There. “proof”. Now..all I have to do is repeat it a few dozen times to make my minions believe it.

And, of course, if JR disagrees, then I paraphrase Shakespeare: “methinks he doth protest too much”…meaning he is obviously guilty.

If he does not protest, then he silently proves my claims.

Simple, yes? Stupid, yes? That is the EXACT logic he uses to ‘prove’ that many different people here are the same person.

Thank you Kansassam for clearing that up. Those who really want to help just do it. They don’t question the identity of those helping out along side them.

It is very interesting not just to feed them but to set down and eat with them. Many of them hunger for this attachment to a normal life. I have talked to young families who started on the east coast and were going west to family and either ran out of money or their cars broke down. They are just you and me down on their luck.

Many have substance abuse problems but many don’t. I talked to one young man who was saving his money to go to Emporia to see his young nephew. He had a baby picture of him. After talking to him for a while I found that this nephew was now 5 and he hadn’t seen him since that picture was taken.

Wiseman.. Until we figure out what gaps need to be filled in the Task Force plan, we are not going to get a building or a distribution center. We have been distributing to the guys down at Messiah’s Branch Homeless Mission at S Broadway and Indianapolis. Pastor Dan is one of the best sources for true caring help here in Wichita. I would say that right now they could use the food items more than us. Please consider donating food items to them, and you can eliminate me as the middle man. They need the same items, but can also use hamburger, buns, eggs and such because they feed on Tuesday’s and Fridays.

If you stop and pay attention, you would have realized that helping the homeless is kansassam’s life’s work.

So true, Sam. Nothing like working with those who are less fortunate that help us get our own priorities in order and realize how blessed we are if we have a good mind, physical health, a marketable skill, and a roof over our heads.

Ksgrm: “Chas Max’s question wasn’t part of the inquisition. It was simply a question.”

No it wasn’t. Immediately prefacing the question:

““I’m not the one with my hand out waiting for you to do something for me.”

The problem is when one reads what someone else says and then applies a template to it, whether it be as a “wealth redistributing liberal” or as a “heartless conservative”, rather than looking at each poster as an individual with individual viewpoints. Max made a mistake, and it was no innocent question, it was rhetorical.

And to be fair to Max, I don’t think he would have asked it if he was familiar with Kansassam. However, my issue is this, too many people assume they know the viewpoints of those they are talking to based on the lib verses con labels they assign to what they first read from the poster. Such habits not only dumb down the discourse here, they result in people talking to constructs from their own minds rather than engaging in any real dialogue.

I’m pretty sure we all disagree on issues at different times, but getting angry never gets a single thing done. If we focus on solving a problem and work together, those differences seem to disappear. I don’t blame Max for his position, how could he know? (unless he did a bone dig back to the beginnings of the WE blog). That’s the very reason I don’t say much anymore… it’s really easy to be misinterpreted or misunderstood when you are not face to face. Please, don’t be mad a Max on my account.. I’m not!

What a statement about Christian republicans - what is your criteria for this? The most compassionate people I know are republicans. They don’t shout their virtues in the streets but behind the scenes fund several programs such as The Lords Diner, His Helping Hands, contribute liberally to the program to feed hungry children on the weekends.

You see the difference between dems and reps here is that repubs do it and dems talk about it. That has been my experience at least. I do know however that this is merely my observation.

Jed…My volunteering at the Lord’s Diner is not done as part of a competition directed by you. I do it for my own reasons.

These are all very good causes, and my observation is that they are supported by all political affiliations. That they are supported is the main issue.. it is NOT the Republicans job, and it is NOT the Democrat’s job.. it is the job of a moral and compassionate humanity regardless of your politics. Fighting about who gives more is like “kicking against the goads”. Nothing good will come of it, and noone will get one iota more help.

There is no doubt that the rise of the right wing and Republicanism has much to do with the rise in violence- not only against the homeless but crime and mass killings in general. The Republicans are very violent people. They love war and blood. And when they set to mood for the nation things like this, Virgina Tech and Northern Illinois U are certain to follow.

Finally some good news for the “help the poor” kindred spirits here.

It has been decided that our nation is not spending enough on the Unearned Income Tax Credit (re: redistribution of wealth, Robin Hood program).

It seems 44 billion is not enough for the give away program.

Efforts are underway by the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Charles Rangel to “re-structure” the progam which would double (steal twice as much) the amount being provided to poor single young and healthy beer drinking men and women.

These poor, poor single people are “unfairly” cheated by the tax system (oxymoron?) which provides more FREE MONEY to the married poor people.

Coupled with the child tax credit, the current program provides over 50 billion dollars of HARD WORKING TAXPAYING AMERICANS money to these poor people.

So, to encourage them to stay in poverty, and NOT marry, we need to provide them MORE.

So I guess you all can just say THANK-YOU to people including and like me, who are contributing thousands into the tax system, in order to ensure I tithe to the government, before the church.

And you greedy animals still want more.

Let me be the first to say “You are welcome”
for sharing of my abundance with the sick, lame, and lazy, in addition to the few who really do need help.

    You’re welcome!

kansassam, I apologize for my remark above.

Too often people complain about something, expecting others to do something about it.

Obviously, I didn’t know your involvement with the homeless, and you are one who actually puts his/her (not sure actually if you are a man or a woman, sorry)money and efforts and not just words to support your cause.

And yes, homelessness is a problem, but the “skyrocketing” violence against them is not supported by the facts presented in the article, as compared to the total number of violent crimes in America.

From what I have read in the past, the number of homeless in America has been a fairly constant figure for the last 30+ years, despite the public and private resources directed at solving this problem.

    Again, I apologize.

  103. Posted February 17, 2008 at 8:33 pm | Permalink

Max, I suggest strongly that you might want to provide some sort of link for your assumption on the violence statement… From all I have read, homelessness is on the increase… and is spreading out to areas that have not seen homelessness in previous years… AND, the vionence IS on the increase… Just like the article upthread says…

    So…. Links please, Maxie???

TOP SECRET: For Republican EYES ONLY.
    (Don’t tell Kev)

I just returned from our clandestine meeting. Here’s the plan. The republicans are secretly using the CIA, FBI, and NSA to inflitrate college campuses across America. There, we are using subliminal messages which only effect (or affect I’m never sure) those students who are predestinated to mental illness. Students with pimples are an easy target, they are never secure in their person. Anyway, these secret messages broadcast on internet sites the college students utilize (supposedly when they are doing homework, yeah right). It is also secretly hidden in the young peoples music. Rap is the best music for our purposes. The message tells them that republicans want them to go buy guns, and to shoot up a bunch of fellow college students because that is GOOD for the republican party, and gun lovers.

We also are sending messages, hidden in company CEO’s email, to the children of republicans that in order to be a real man, they need to beat up as many homeless people as possible. But under no circumstances, should they reveal they are the children of republican VP’s, P’s, CEO, COO’s, and alal the other satan driven management types.

For the category of general crime, we have enlisted the masses of young republicans. They have under secret orders from the White House, been directed to commit great numbers of “general” crime events.

Now all of this is TOP SECRET. Do NOT under any circumstances reveal this to the poster KEV on the small Kansas newspaper WEBLOG website.

The later is most important to our success in underminding the youth of America and causing great negatives to the republican party, who is secretly promoting more crime and villains in America.

    That is all.

    You’re welcome!<<<

Your money providing for the poor would bring great joy to the Lord if given willingly. It would also lessen the need for government intervention and return caring for the poor to the church where it belongs. Unfortunately most lose their blessings by choosing self over others. If only all Christians truly believed in the very words of Christ, the government would have no need to “steal” our money.

    Matthew 25:

34″Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37″Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40″The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

41″Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
