Ready to be rid of forced busing

busing1.jpgThe Wichita school board’s historic decision to stop forced busing for desegregation seems in step with the public’s mood. In a SurveyUSA poll this week for KWCH, Channel 12 in Wichita, 73 percent of those surveyed said the district should stop such busing, and 54 percent said they think that after forced busing ends, the schools will have the right amount of diversity. Such positive feedback affirms that the district is doing the right thing, 37 years after it began forced busing. Another wise move: Monday’s unanimous school board decision to hire a director of equity and accountability to watchdog the busing transition and other equity issues. The board also was smart to make that person report to the superintendent rather than to the board, as proposed.

Once again, the conservatives were right on this one. Too bad it took 37 years to prove it.

Okay Fleet, I’ll bite. What do you mean it took conservatives 37 years, but they were right? I sure hope you don’t mean that we never should have had desegregation to begin with, because it was very necessary.

Typically, you make a leap of logic. This was about busing.

OK, fleet, I’ll ask the obvious question; what would you have preferred to occur to correct for de jure segregation in the Wichita district, or any other school district where that occurred other than busing?

VT– The skool segregation wasn’t due to a sign on the door that said “Whites Only”. Kids went to skool where they lived. If the skools in Black neighborhoods were sub-par, then we should have put more money into them. Not drag them all over town to make the Libs feel like they cared most.

fleet, the problem is that in many cities, including Wichita, the black kids didn’t get to go to their neighborhood schools; like the Plaintiff in the Brown case, they were not permitted to attend school at the school close to where they lived, but were forced to attend an “all Negro” school further from their home.

Busing was not a good option; I think we all can agree to that. However, it was a “simple” solution to a complex problem. As I recall, a Federal Judge somewhere approved a busing plan out of frustration with a school district that was dragging its feet to comply with Brown, the case went to SCOTUS (eventually), and was affirmed. With the SCOTUS affirmation, courts began to order busing in all cases.

I think that in 5 years the Wichita schools will be back to what they were 40 years ago. You will have a number of all black and all white schools in different neighbourhoods. Only schools in more diverse areas such as College Hill will be integrated racially in 5 years.

I agree that bussing was never an ideal solution. The ideal solution would be the full integration of the black people into the neighbourhoods of the city as a whole. Unfortunately that largely has not occured although things are improved and moving the right way. But real estate sales people still “steer” whites to white neighbourhoods and blacks and Mexicans to other areas.

Hogwash. Typical Lib. People are too stupid to think for themselves.

If it turns out we end up with mostly White or Black skools, so be it.

Wichita schools have never been fully integrated. Yes, the black and white populations were bused around to accomplish a mix of those two races (with the greatest burden falling always on the blacks), but no other race was ever a part of any integration process. When an influx of Vietnamese entered our city and later an influx of Hispanics, they settled where they chose and their children went to school where they chose with no thought to integration.

That’s not much of a surprise.

This decision to end busing is unwise.

Oh and last I knew? I’m the only poster here that actually has a kid in school.

That’s probably true JR about you having a kid that age.

    The reason is simple.

Most people your age are gainfully employed and can’t blog 24/7. :)

Keep believing that JR, some day when you are old and decrepit, too young to get your social security if it’s still around, you’ll be begging for scraps at the bus station.

That is just silly. Noticing that there are sections of a town with the same racial/ethnic makes me a noticer not a bigoter.
