After all their blustering, it was remarkable that Carl Holmes and Melvin Neufeld precipitously yanked the coal plant bill away from a committee vote yesterday. I am curious to hear from those involved in the strategizing what happened?
They are looking at their cut of the 3600 Million $$’s for the Sedwick County “Pasture Fans” called the Holcomb Project, by comparison. Herbert West III, west.herb@yahoo.com http://www.wen2k.com
Chas.
I do not appreciate you posting lies about me on yesterday’s Open Thread. Prove that I hold all those positions about jailing people or admit to your lies.
Back it up or admit who you are.
Looks like new AG Six is wasting no time trying to get the water Kansas is owed, and deserves, from Nebraska. Good for him. At least ONE person in Topeka realizes how important this is to the entire state.
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/K/KS_WATER_DISPUTE_KSOL-?SITE=KSSAL&SECTION=STATE&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT
Funny thing, I didnt see this in the WE, but then I can only get the on line version.
Hee hee hee. While the republicans are gathering around the state, we “libs” should be filling up the blog with “lib” stuff.
That oughta piss ‘em off when they come back gloating from their lovefest.
Hee hee hee hee hee heee…..
Don’t know how accurate the numbers are but The Eagle says there were 500 people at Jabara Airport yesterday to see Huckabee and 350 went to see McCain. Those numbers are close to the number of Democrats at Newman U (ONE of the caucus location last Tuesday!). Also, 200 (again Eagle estimate) went to a rally in support of Ron Paul.
It will be very interesting to see numbers on today’s Republican caucus attendance!
I know what a great ambassador bushco has been for the Democratic Party!
Any regulars here who know Julie and MountainMan….PLEASE PRAY for them.
MM is back in the hospital with an infection.
I don’t know much more than that.
Flash … late breaking news. Its 9:30 AM on Saturday morning. I just came from Century II trying to attend the Republican caucus. THE LINE EXTENDS FROM CENTURY II CLEAR OVER TO MAIN STREET, THEN SOUTH FOR A BLOCK OR TWO INTO THE WATER WALK AREA. MUST BE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN THAT LINE.
Wichita Republicans must be sending a message but at this point don’t know what it is.
I will return at about 10:30 AM to stand in line and try to get in to cast my vote for John McCain.
Amazing!
Jwink, that is commendable.
IF I were a repub., I would vote McCain also!
Nothing like a bunch of excited, determined Democrats to get those Republicans going? (giggle!)
“Wichita Republicans must be sending a message but at this point don’t know what it is.”
Unless it is “We surrender!”, I am not interested or impressed with their message.
They have better weather on a Saturday morning with a single location with good parking.
I bet they STILL don’t turnout like the Dems did.
I’ve looked all over my keyboard, but I can’t find that Hee hee hee hee heee…. key. Anybody know where it is?
Here ya go Proud Man
http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2008/02/open-thread-28/#comment-290001
Dexter, it’s right next to the “Any” Key LOL
Seems strange that the Republican Caucus is using only ONE location, when the Democrats met all over the City… Is that in itself some kind of message??
I think it’s one of those things you must “feel,” and some of us are feeling it lately! hee hee hee
Ya know us touchy feeley folks.
This morning’s newspaper says Century II is the place Republicans from Sedgwick and Butler counties caucus. I haven’t been interested enough to look at how many locations across the state, where they might be, or who should caucus where.
I guess the Reublicans just couldnt find a “smoke filled” room?? LOL
Chas., that does not provide evidence for the strawmen you accused Proudman of being (wanting to shut up or imprison Iraq war critics). Proudman’s post WAS a straw man, but your response was just to throw a straw man back at him.
Where is the evidence that Proudman said anything along these lines:
“It’s amazing how much you people were FOR silence and punishment, when Democrats attempted to speak out AGAINST the war… You all wanted those against BushCo and the War, arrested, and found guilty of Treason, and executed or at least life in prison!!”
Just because some self identified conservative Republican might say such nonsense doesn’t mean that anyone who argues on the conservative Republican “side” has to defend such nonsense, any more than those of us who, absent contrasting evidence, support the scientific consensus position on global warming are obligated to defend what some guy in Canada said.
Proudman’s argument WAS a pathetic straw man, but your response was at least as pathetic in the straw man category. His post did not justify yours in response.
And that’s all I have to say about the matter.
“You all wanted those against BushCo and the War, arrested, and found guilty of Treason, and executed or at least life in prison!!”
Actually, Randal “Duke” Cunningham, (R-California) said exactly that – that those against the War, liberals and Democrats, should be lined up against a wall and shot. He wasn’t the only one, either.
Duke is now lined up against a wall himself – serving eight years in prison for accepting bribes.
AS if the Dems didn’t “come back gloating from their lovefest”…?
Why is it ok for your beloved Dems to do exactly what you castigate the Repubs for doing? The gloating and self congratulations continued here for days after the democratic caucuses. Why is that so much “better”?
Your myopic vision is amazing.
Taz, I still feel the high from last Tuesday evening! And my plan is to continue the “gloating and self congratulations” to November and BEYOND. I wouldn’t expect less from anyone of any party. I’m really excited about the Democratic Party choices and even more excited about the fact that we will be a very unified force to be dealt with come November.
KsAgnostic, I cant find the link right now, as it was fairly old… My point to ProudMan was that he has usually been a part of the crowd that advocated that dissenters to BushCo and the war were traitors, and many wanted them jailed, as WSClark points out above…
NO, it wasnt a recent comment… But, I do remember ProudMan being in the same camp as those who called dissenters traitors, and should be jailed as such… Remember what the Right Wing once said about the NYT Editors??
Linda–And I do not fault you for your enthusiasm and political high. I find fault with ksfrmgl denigrating the other party, as if they are not entitled to the exact same type of euphoria.
So, I have some interesting tidbits here.
NOW has been working hard to get a hearing at the House for the Equal Rights Amendment in Kansas, and we presented more petition signatures on both sides of the aisle this than even for Alexa’s law. Last year, Seigfried PROMISED us a hearing, early in the legislative session.
So what does he do this year? He PERSONALLY CONTACTS opposition to this measure, and schedules the hearing AROUND THEIR SCHEDULE. This is not normal routine at all. He is now saying that he didn’t say we would get any vote. So what is the point of having a hearing?
So, now you know that if some legislation comes up from groups, he should be fair and contact oppposition for it and schedule the event around the opposition’s schedule.
It floors me that this is such a supported issue, once people are informed on both sides of the aisle, from men and women…and yet, he acts like we’re introducing legislation to kill children.
Equal Rights under the constitution in Kansas for women is NOT an outrageous request! It is 2008, don’t you think it is TIME that we are legally and constitutionally recognized? And I think this is why he’s playing these games because he knows it’ll be voted for. Matter of fact, Kansas was the first state to vote for this years ago when it was introduced at the federal level. For those of you who are unaware, it never did pass the Federal level. We were a few states shy of ratifying it. There is NO ERA for women. Each state must pass their own.
This is such a slap in the face to mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers who have fought through the years to get this implemented. I know my own grandmother did, and it would make her happy to know we got it passed before she dies.
There is NO valid reason to oppose this measure, not even a little bit.
Yeah, but we all have times where we post something “in the moment.” Or, I do! I won’t like reading the Republicans lovefest later today and throughout the next several months. I don’t like reading the seemingly divided Democratic Party comments but am holding tight to the unified feeling from last Tuesday. I talked to lots of excited people who ALL agreed to agree with our final nominee AND better yet, without disappointment. I’ll need to hold tighter in the next few days, but I know I can do it!
I agree PMama… BUT — Kansas still has a lot of followers of Phyllis Schlafly, and James Dobson… who were two very vocal opponents of the ERA years ago!!
I still remember laughing when some of the ERA opponents tried to use the phony argument that IF we had the ERA passed, that it would mean an end to separate restrooms, and all public restrooms would be Unisex…
Strange as it sounds, that kind of panic button seemed to work in some places…
Taz, I’m just rolling my eyes at you.
“AS if the Dems didn’t “come back gloating from their lovefest”…?”
AS IF I havent been critical of democrats too.
Woof.
And Pmom. Welcome to the gay world, where EVERY bit of progress is in SPITE of the legislature, not because of it.
And Taz, here’s one for you.
There were more republicans in the kansas legislature that voted AGAINST the hate amendment than democrats.
Does that make your little hurt feelings better?
jesus WEPT!
and that is complete nonsense. Dobson is an idiot. The people who support his crap deserve to be left in the dark ages.
They may want women to stay subservient, and that is their right, but they don’t have to put that on the rest of us.
“Strange as it sounds, that kind of panic button seemed to work in some places…”
Hell Chas, it still does! Tippy was here a while back argueing about it. And that was on a thread about gays in the military!
I had dinner last night with a friend from Iowa and SHE commented on how much more backward Kansas was.
Than Iowa.
woof.
And as far as dobbie goes.
He thinks mccain is a liberal.
HOW out of touch with reality can one man be? Never mind. PLEASE dont answer. I dont want to know…
And Taz? Why TF are you not caucusing today? Did you crossover? heheheheheheheh
“And Pmom. Welcome to the gay world, where EVERY bit of progress is in SPITE of the legislature, not because of it.”
And Pmom, we cant even get the bill to allow hospital visits out of committee.
And even though a MAJORITY of the public supports it, we cant get anti-job discrimination bills out of committee. The repuks like kenny wilks want to overturn governor “leadership’s” late but good executive order not allowing sexual orientation discrimination in state employment.
We still got a LONG way to go baby, at least in Kansas.
If you ever bothered reading previous posts instead of just looking for targets, you would know that I am not a registered Republican. Or Democrat. I don’t follow either party line, since I find them hard to tell apart at times.
That position, of course, has resulted in various insults from Capn..even tho I have walked hundreds of blocks, participated in phone banks, raised funds, etc., for individual candidates in the past. Some Democratic, some Republican.
Nor have I stated any preference for any candidate. I do not support/defend the current disgusting administration and its illegal actions in Iraq. I am scared of any candidate that supports it. I do not trust Clintons and I just don’t know enough about Obama.
So, why in the world would I support/endorse/or belong to any particular party? I have never supported either political party in my life, and am far too old to do so now. I just love bagging on extremists and countering their totally ridiculous “arguments”.
That is so f’d up I tell you. KFG, I’ll send you an email if that’s ok.
“a friend from Iowa and SHE commented on how much more backward Kansas was.”
Jeez, just when we thought that Kansas was moving up to the second grade level when it came to being progressive.
Kinda tells you how much work is left to be done.
Seventy percent of Kansans voted FOR the ban on gay marriage – I am not sure, but that certainly puts us WAAAAAAAY down on the map.
Christ, even Arizona defeated a ban on gay marriage.
Even South Dakota defeated a ban on abortion.
Kansas, not quite as bigoted as Mississippi.
What a state moto.
hee hee hee hee heeeeeeee! (hat tip to Linda. I am feeling it!)
“Kansas, not quite as bigoted as Mississippi.”
Good one Clark!
And pmom, feel free to email me. I dont have your email addy anymore.
“I just love bagging on extremists and countering their totally ridiculous “arguments”.”
And if you bothered to read MY posts you would know I’m no longer a democrat and I am FREQUENTLY at odds with them.
Just ask Kelly.
I get it. You dont care anymore about my posts than I do about yours. So what?
Feel free to scroll on by.
Email sent KFG. If you’re like me you have two, one for personal stuff which I stay on most of the time, and another for blog items….which rarely gets checked.
Pmom, here is a great post about the elephant in the room this election that no one is talking about.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132×4500734
Back from the Caucus, the attendance was around four thousand, interesting and a surprise since no one else may say it. I was amazed at the turn out as face it, unless we could put someone up that would draw swing voters. Obama has it, sorry KFG, PMOM and JR but his will be it or at least I think so. Anyway, it was quite interesting and totally different from a Primary. You had to be committed to a candidate in order to stand around that long and listen to all the speaks. When Hank and I went over we were shocked to see what we thought was the end of the line out on main. But then we were told we should cut across the parking lot as the real end was on the next street to the South! The line stretched from the front doors down to Main around main to the next street and back to the halfway down the parking lot. And by the time we got to the front doors, the line was stood where we had gotten in at the end!
The sign wavers seem about equal between Huckabee and Ron Paul eeeh I have a yard sign now!!!! LOL I promised Hank I would not make a scene as I am “serious about Paul!”. There were seldom an outburst, once in awhile Paul’s people would shout his name. But I have to say the Huckabee’s people were the most vocal. I believe there were more Mc Cain yard signs on the outside then supporters on the inside. The only outburst during the Mc Cain speakers part was from the back when some one shout “BULL SH^T!”.
Half way through I was thinking we as the American voters should have a Caucus every other election season. BUT by the time it was over I was thinking maybe once every thirty years! I know… I know you want to know how many Hillary jokes were told? Sorry there were not many or as many as you might think.
Only one Obama statement and that was from the speaker for Alan Keys ( Yeah he is running and no I will not tell you whom he is!) But a vote for Keys is a vote for racial equality! That was sad really… But it was a good breakfast and yes a bit expensive around ten dollars for a buffet. Met KSGM and no she does not have horns and is really nice. But then everyone so far that I have met in person has been.
To be honest the hatefulness around this blog had made me think another meet up would be a bad idea.
But it does seem to quiet down the hate for a bit, might think about it?
P.S. for those Mc Cain hopefuls, I would not bank on Kansas not sure whom will get it but I think it was about a tie between Keys and Mc Cain supporters. ( still not going to tell you whom Keys is! LOL)
you go to a rep caucus to find more of them support obama in ks? yeah that’s a place for real biased observation.
DAMN YOU CHAS, the smoke filled room comment reminded me how much I was wanting a cigarette during it!
Chas.,
Back up you claims or admit to being a liar. You wrote:
“It’s amazing how much you people were FOR silence and punishment, when Democrats attempted to speak out AGAINST the war… You all wanted those against BushCo and the War, arrested, and found guilty of Treason, and executed or at least life in prison!!”
Prove it.
I went, but couldn’t stand that long as my back would have never taken it. Too bad they didn’t have any facilities for crippled old prunes. Oh well, it was encouraging to see the turn out.
PM, I already posted an answer to your question – one of your Republican heroes – a dyed in the wool Republican representative from Congress, stated without equivocation that he thought Democrats and liberals should be “lined up against a wall and shot” for being anti-war.
What else do you need?
MOM Hillary is still a target for the right that has not changed, but I think the majority of the Democrats have. The lack of Hillary joke is a telling tale, I feel that maybe the GOP has figured out that she just does not have the same impact she once did. At one time Hillary Clinton as the Democratic designate might have given a Dan Quayle run a real chance of winning. But we are at a loss for a consciences builder in the GOP. You are in a real sense having the same problem, in the end both parties will rally for a candidate. But like so many elections it will once again be a lesser of two evils to decide between.
Oh well, it was encouraging to see the turn out.
On a grander scale yes it was Regular, I am quite happy to see both parties having a turn out. It has long been one of my greatest complains “voter Apathy” After going through a Caucus and knowing something of what the Democrats had gone through. The fact that it was a high turn out by both shows that perhaps once again the people are wanting to take this country back from the Politicians.
WSClark (or Chas. whatever nic suites you)
I missed the part where Duke Cunningham spoke for me. Back it up. Show that I endorsed his statement or admit to being a liar.
If the weather had been like during the dem. caucus, how long do you think the line would have been then!
Told ya.
Kansas called for Huckabee. BIG for Huckabee.
61% Hickabee
24% McCain.
11% Paul
And turnout was PITIFUL in comparison with the Dems!
The winds of November are blowing in February!!
No compromise. No negotiation. GO HILLARY!
“Actually, Randal “Duke” Cunningham, (R-California) said exactly that – that those against the War, liberals and Democrats, should be lined up against a wall and shot. He wasn’t the only one, either.”
But that doesn’t mean Proudman said it. Hanging Crooked Cunningham’s comments on anyone who is a conservative is like hanging some guy in Canada’s comments on anyone who argues that global warming is a very legitimate concern.
“I missed the part where Duke Cunningham spoke for me. Back it up. Show that I endorsed his statement or admit to being a liar.”
I don’t think WS is Chas. Furthermore, your outrage rings somewhat hollow considering this is what elicited Chas.’s (bad) rejoinder:
“Posted February 8, 2008 at 2:22 pm | Permalink
Let the global warming religious inquisition begin!
http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=290513
“Jail the ‘deniers’! Those who disagree must be silenced and punished!”
Please indicate where this guy speaks for me or other people who take the evidence for global warming seriously.
In other words, take the damn plank out of your own eye first, wiseguy.
Go Hillary OR Obama, whichever one wins.
Seems like the Kansas Republicans didn’t get much crossover.
Kobach must be happy.
That clown.
ksagnostic,
Read my post. I never said he spoke for anyone. The jail the deniers comment is basically what he said. He being David Suzuki, a prominent voice in Canada.
There is no plank in my eye. I don’t like being smeared.
I do appreciate your attempts to say ‘hey the whole thing is silly, let it go’. I believe I will. After all, it’s more fun to let the dishonest show who they are than to actually talk to them.
Note: I don’t wsclark is chas., but then I don’t really care about that either.
It was filled with Jim Nabors’ people and there is no way MCCain was 2nd, I was there at Century II, you could have heard a mouse peeing when his name was mentioned. But oh, well. Enjoy it.
Man, was I ever wrong. So much for my ever predicting an election again. Had no clue that Huckabee could get more than even 20%, let alone over 60.
Simply amazing…and I thought that Kansas kicked out the ultra conservatives last election. Maybe they are coming back…?
Scary.
ProudMan, do you deny that you did NOT call for the jailing of war dissenters???
That was my point originally… Given your side of the aisle… ya know…
Seems to me that was what Dr. Suzuki was reacting to as well… the Duke Cunningham types…
If that was NOT you that called for jailing war dissenters, ala Cunningham, then perhaps you were the victim of nic stealing, back around the time when Rumsfeld made his now infamous call for something similar…
IF you were a victim of nic stealing back at that time, I humbly apologize…
“Taz” –
When you posted you “…Had no clue that Huckabee could get more than even 20%, let alone over 60,” I was pretty convinced you have no idea what you’re talking about.
The Kansas Republic Party has done nothing but deny any but the twice-born from having any say in the party’s operations.
The Kansas Republic Party caucuses are revealing. In any other year, once a front-runner were decided, the sheelple GOP would gather together to prove to the world they are a unified force. But not the evangelicals. McCain’s “straight talk” told ‘em a long time ago what he really thought of ‘em. And they’ll sit at home and pray rather than vote for him in November.
Kansas Republic Party caucus participants just reinforced the rest of the nation’s prejudice against Kansas.
Kansas today just voted for American jobs to never come back, for illegal immigrants to never go home, and another hundred years of war in Iraq.
Perhaps you should look at the Huckabee Website and then add some salt to your words, so they go down easier. You printed the exactly opposite what Huckabee stands for.
Lot of folks like the fair tax plan.
Uh…MH? I already said I was wrong. I apologize for not being perfect like you are. I admitted I have no future in political forecasting and was completely wrong.
What do you expect now..shall I cut off my arm or something?
IIRC Huckabee wont get very many delegates from KS anyway!! McCain should still be the Repub. candidate…
And Krazy Kris Kobach PROMISED the Republican caucus would get more than the Dems!
GOP=20,009
Dem=29,000
And, at each of the Sedgwick County Democratic sites, an average of 170 registrations–most of them Republicans changing to Democrat.
6 sites x 170=1,020
That’s over 25 percent of the turnout for the Republican caucus in Sedgwick County.
Frankly, I didn’t think Kansas would outperform Iowa… where 17 percent of the REPUBLICANS caucused with the DEMOCRATS… but it looks like we did!
What say you, my hard-line Republican friends?
“Regular” offers –
“Lot of folks like the fair tax plan.”
Yeah. Until, y’know, they think about it.
No more mortgage deduction.
No more business deduction.
No more child credit.
That SUV you’ve had your eye on? It’s now 23% more expensive.
Now, I’ll grant you that people such as “Regular” only look at the so-called “Fair Tax” as paying a Dollar-and-a-Quarter for his Dollar Menu drive-through at McDonald’s.
But going for the Huckster’s so-called “Fair” Tax means you pay a quarter more than you’re paying today for EVERYTHING YOU PURCHASE!!!
Okay, so that might not mean all that much to “Regular.” It’ll only affect his purchase of adult diapers and packets of Ramon noodles.
Add a quarter to every dollar you spend. That’s Huckabee’s “Fair Tax.”
Think about it.
MrC,
I would say the only statistic that matters is the on that occurs in November. :)
The Europeans which Libs highly tout, already have a flat or VAT tax plan. Doesn’t appear to have caused them any problems.
Ummm From what I have read, a Flat Tax, is NOT the same thing as the Fair Tax proposed by Huckabee, Neal Boortz, et al… Lots of difference there…
M H — Does that 25% include State Sales Tax, or not?? I dont remember?? If it doesnt, then it will be like 32% for every purchase…
The state-wide totals for Democrats at the caucus was over 36,000! I’ll go get the actual numbers.
36,723 100.00%
http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P08/KS-D.phtml
And, according to Kansas.com the total Republicans was:
“The final turnout was 20,009 ballots cast, the state’s GOP said.”
IN KANSAS!! Hip, hip, hooray! The Democratic Party has some serious butt kicking to do this November!
Yeeeeah. Good luck with that “fair-tax” thing. Same taxing, different name.
“Chas.” –
No. The State and local sales taxes would be added to the Huckster’s federal “Fair” Tax.
Well, then, MH, looks to me like the Fair Tax just plain fairly Sucks!!
Well with 100% of the caucus tallied, I added up to just about 18,300.
Source FOX news and the totals they had for each candidate.
THIS means that against the number Linda has for the Dems. The Republican turnout was just about HALF.
And that on a lovely Saturday morning!
Either Obama or Senator Clinton can beat McCain or Huckabee and it won’t even be close.
I’ve said it all along. We get to pick the next President. My support is for Senator Clinton.
Wow, and given that republicans register 2:1 in Kansas, and had HALF the turnout, on a day that the weather was good, and the dem caucuses were held in blizzards and ice…
Maybe Kansas really will turn purple. Or.. dare I say it… blue?
Sounds like the democratic caucuses in Nebraska didnt go any better than in Kansas. One of the comments echoed mine about “dont they read the papers?”
Or… as I hinted before, is some of it planned?
Makes ya wonder why Hillary does so well in primaries and obama does so well at caucuses.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132×4503818
I copied and pasted and just need to hope the columns act like columns after I hit “Post Comment.” No preview, don’t ya know!
Kansas Democratic Caucus Results
Candidate Votes * %
Barack Obama 27,172 74%
Hillary Clinton 9,462 26%
John Edwards 53 0%
Dennis Kucinich 35 0%
Bill Richardson 1 0%
I work with a couple guys who are, or were, fairly active in Virginia GOP politics. One’s wife is currently a committeewoman for the Norfolk City VRP Unit Committee, or so I hear. The other guy’s a Mormon, and at least in my office the local GOP die-hard think Huckleberry is a joke. The Mormon finds him “scary;” they were all pulling for Romney big time. These guys were crushed, and I mean nearly to tears, on Thursday when he pulled the plug at CPAC. There was a planning manager visiting nearby and you’d a thought somebody stole his teddy bear or something when the resident Kraut liberal told him the Romney news. “What are we going to do now?” he asked, and there’s no other way to describe his tone than “plaintively.” Dude was bummed.
According the the husband of the wife who’s a minor majordomo among the Republics here in Hampton Roads, nobody who’s anybody will vote for Huckabee this Tuesday. Or McCain for that matter. Our primary is open, and I hear that the plan is for Republics to cross over and vote for Clinton, if they like McCain and think they could vote for him in November, or Obama if they don’t. According to these guys, no “good” Republic is actually going to vote in the Republic primary here. Huckabee is a hillbilly, and McCain is just beneath ‘em. Ron Paul ain’t even on the radar here in E. Virginia.
Yall might take that into account when you start trying to extract meaning from comparing Democrat turnout to Republic turnout. Probably some of the RINO’s there turned out for Obama.
The Kansas Dems had a 37,000 turnout.
36,723 to be exact.
Amazing Dem. turnout!! WTG KS Dems!!
My bad :)
Most definitely a good job of you guys getting voters out. I am still pleased with the turnout of DrRP supporters.
My hubby’s theory on Ron Paul’s support in votes not seeming to equal his support in money and popularity is that he might be compared to the one you didn’t bring home to Mama.
Good as any explanation! Many have been wondering why those many contributors don’t translate to votes.
Looks to me like Ron Paul can just about call it a day!!
Chas, he won’t stop running until we stop giving him money. And that won’t happen. What is going on is much bigger than Dr. Paul himself and we’ve always known that he’d have no chance at the nod. We wanted REAL issues injected into the debates. Although he was cheated out of debate time, his time was well spent. If not for Dr. Paul there would be NO talk of the Fed and IRS. All would be concentrated on talk of “lowering” taxes or rebates. Never bringing up the inherent problems and trying to cure them, only keeping them medicated and buried and ignored. Anyhoo, expect this to stay around and remain alive and well.
Think about Dr. Paul’s message. The constitution, freedom, liberty. I have never watched a campaign where all the candidates have been using these terms. Hasn’t been since RP really started making money.
The most important thing about the RP campaign is the message. For those of us that heard the message, we were so overwhelmed and so inspired, we started the fire. We get it. We have opened our eyes.
Unfortunately there are far to many who listen to the talking heads. They hear –oh he is a conservative, I can’t listen to him – or – Oh Fux news says he is a kook. I can’t listen to him.
That is the most unfortunate of all. Those that refused to hear.
The media black out. The media refuse to utter his name. Has that not crossed your minds? Dr. Paul has a message of truth and freedom. He looks to shatter the status quo. Those devouring our freedom, our dollars, our lives. That scares a lot of the big wigs. They don’t want their cradle rocked.
All you have to do is look to New Hampshire and New York’s primaries. Look at the blatant vote fraud. And not a single leading news story.
The sheeple sleep and follow their masters. When they wake, it will be far too late. Check your rights at the door, you won’t be needing them anymore.
I have apprecciated parts of Dr. Paul’s message and do completely agree that he got the shaft! But he isn’t someone I could ever vote for.
Ron Paul = Ralph Nader
Ron Paul=Ralph Nader?
Well, only as a confusing force in a close election maybe. But in any other respect I find “Ron Paul=Ralph Nader” and insult to Ralph Nader!
Ralph Nader is a tremendous consumer and environmental advocate.
Ron Paul is an advocate of a sort of government that hasn’t been practical as to this country since about 1900.
“Ralph Nader is a tremendous consumer and environmental advocate”
Then why by his actions, did he totally abandon the consumer and the environment by handing the election to Bushco?
Surely he’s not so stupid that he doesn’t know exactly what he did with his egotistical run for the Presidency.
Ralph Nader turned his reputation into crapola.
“The media black out. The media refuse to utter his name.”
I have noticed that…But quite honestly, Kucinich and Richardson never got great coverage either, and neither did Sen. Gravel.. so, Ron Paul wasnt singled out for “ignore” status
A commentator on NPR said that Ron Paul doesn’t have workers, he has evangelists.
Regarding the state’s rights/liberatarian message, been there done that got over it 30 years ago.
Ron Paul will potentially do the same thing for the Republicans.
If he runs as a third party he will destroy the Republican chances like Ralph Nader did for Gore and Ross Perot did for Bush senior.
Ralph Nader = Ross Perot = Ron Paul
Sol, your rampant paranoia doesnt help your cause at all!!
Thats right on the evangelists… his campaign has a pseudo-evangelical revival style to it!! Sort of like going to an Amway sales meeting…
Did someone forget to tell Dr. Paul’s “evangelists” they need to go to the polls and cast votes? It’s such a mystery to me how a person with so many supporters can get so few votes. Isn’t the large amount of money supposed to be from many every day little guys?
Sort of a problem there Lindda
“Thats right on the evangelists… his campaign has a pseudo-evangelical revival style to it!! Sort of like going to an Amway sales meeting…”
It should be noted that, although I am very aware of what Ron Paul stands for and do not think he is the constitutional scholar or constitutional candidate that Sol thinks he is, the evangelist comment, from myself and from the tone of the NPR commentator, was NOT meant disparingly. It’s literally the way that Ron Paul advocates express themselves. Some have said the same thing about Barack Obama advocates, but it really stands out in the Ron Paul people.
Like I said, I’ve found that trait in some die hard liberatarian types for years. Ron Paul is touching a nerve that is does run strongly through a number of Americans of all ages, although I will say that a lot of young men, I believe, go through a liberatarian phase when they are first living on their own and are feeling beholden to no one.
From Bush, Foe of Earmarks, Similar Items
By ROBERT PEAR
Published: February 10, 2008
WASHINGTON — President Bush often denounces the propensity of Congress to earmark money for pet projects. But in his new budget, Mr. Bush has requested money for thousands of similar projects.
He asked for money to build fish hatcheries, eradicate agricultural pests, conduct research, pave highways, dredge harbors and perform many other specific local tasks.
The details are buried deep in the president’s budget, just as most Congressional earmarks are buried in obscure committee reports that accompany spending bills.
Thus, for example, the president requested $330 million to deal with plant pests like the emerald ash borer, the light brown apple moth and the sirex woodwasp. He sought $800,000 for the Neosho National Fish Hatchery in Missouri and $1.5 million for a waterway named in honor of former Senator J. Bennett Johnston, a Louisiana Democrat.
At the same time, Mr. Bush requested $894,000 for an air traffic control tower in Kalamazoo, Mich.; $12 million for a parachute repair shop at the American air base in Aviano, Italy; and $6.5 million for research in Wyoming on the “fundamental properties of asphalt.”
He sought $3 million for a forest conservation project in Minnesota, $2.1 million for a neutrino detector at the South Pole and $28 million for General Electric and Siemens to do research on hydrogen-fuel turbines.
The projects, itemized in thousands of pages of budget documents submitted last week to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, show that the debate over earmarks is much more complex than the “all or nothing” choice usually presented to the public. The president and Congress both want to direct money to specific projects, but often disagree over the merits of particular items.
The White House contends that when the president requests money for a project, it has gone through a rigorous review — by the agency, the White House or both — using objective criteria.
Congressional leaders said they would focus more closely on items requested by the president this year. “The executive branch should be held accountable for its own earmark practices,” said the House Republican leader, Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said Democrats agreed that “the large number of presidential earmarks deserve the same scrutiny and restraint” as those that originated in Congress.
Mr. Bush has often derided Congressional earmarks as “special interest items” that waste taxpayer money and undermine trust in government. Congress, he said, included more than 11,700 earmarks totaling almost $17 billion in spending bills for the current fiscal year.
But some of those earmarks were similar or identical to ones included in the 2009 budget that Mr. Bush sent Congress last week. For example, Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Democratic whip, obtained an earmark of $1.5 million last year to deal with the emerald ash borer, a beetle that attacks trees, lawns and crops. Mr. Bush now wants more money to fight that insect.
A similar pattern is evident at the Bureau of Reclamation, an Interior Department agency that provides water and power in 17 states. Congress and the White House both support construction of a huge water project known as Mni Wiconi, which would deliver water from the Missouri River to rural South Dakota.
At the behest of South Dakota lawmakers, Congress earmarked $38 million for the project last year. In its budget justification for 2009, the bureau requests $779 million for more than 150 specific projects, including $26 million more for the one in South Dakota.
Similarly, the Bush administration is requesting money for a water project near the Nueces River in South Texas — the same project that benefited from a bipartisan Congressional earmark last year.
In effect, the president accepted some Congressional earmarks as worthy of continued federal support. But he rejected many more and sought no money for them in 2009.
The White House defines “earmarks” in a way that applies only to projects designated by Congress, not to those requested by the administration.
“Earmarks,” as defined by the White House, “are funds provided by Congress for projects or programs where the Congressional direction (in bill or report language) circumvents the merit-based or competitive allocation process, or specifies the location or recipient, or otherwise curtails the ability of the executive branch to properly manage funds.”………………..

Ron Paul CANNOT do what Perot or Nader did. The people who will vote for Ron Paul would never vote for any of the other’s anyway. We would stay at home in apathy like every year prior to this one. And what are the paid worker’s for the other candidates but “evangelists”? Isn’t that the idea? Or is it NPR’s way of slighting missionaries? It’s the pot calling the kettle black is what it is.
The message of freedom is as valid today as it was in 1900.
“Did someone forget to tell Dr. Paul’s “evangelists” they need to go to the polls and cast votes? It’s such a mystery to me how a person with so many supporters can get so few votes. Isn’t the large amount of money supposed to be from many every day little guys?”
That’s a very good question. I have no real answer to it. I know what Sol thinks.
However, I have always been surprised in general that the Libertarian party isn’t a stronger factor in American politics, considering the number of liberatian types I have run into through the years.
KsAg.. What I see is an overtone of aattempts at persuasive conversion to the Ron Paul doctrine of whatever he is peddling…
However, even though he getse in $$$$ he doesnt seem to be able to translate the $$$$ into voting!!
He doesn’t get “real votes” because he offers “real change” and most people say that’s what they want, but they are mortified of the unknown and so they resort to accepting lip service as “real change”.
Huckabee captured 59.6 percent of the vote to McCain’s 23.5 percent.
Rep. Ron Paul had 11.2 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney got 3.3 percent.
11.2 isn’t bad for someone who hardly gets any coverage and probably doesn’t have a chance of winning the nomination.
Hmmmm interesting… but then, why does Obama seem to do pretty good with his concepts of “Change”??

“Think about Dr. Paul’s message.”
Uh-huh…
Ron Paul incorrectly believes that volcanoes are causing global warming, and that we have to “deal with” those volcanoes.
He incorrectly believes that there are “reputable” scientists who can show that humans are not causing global warming.
Ron Paul has no strategy for the very important issue of global warming.
He has a great message! /sarcasm OFF
“The message of freedom is as valid today as it was in 1900.”
Quite frankly, I don’t think Ron Paul’s message is the one of freedom that you think it is. He would cede a lot of authority back to states, and contrary to the conventional wisdom of some liberarian thinkers, that is arguably a road to reducing the freedoms of citizens. The smaller a representative government, the more tyrannical it can become on a lot of issues, little and big.
Seriously, think about it. For many homeowners, for example, the worst, most petty tyrants come in the form of homeowner’s associations, or city hall. Of course one can come up with examples from federal level bureaucracies (especially ill considered one size fits all laws) but the worst examples of freedom denied in American history, on the things that matter, come from state and smaller level governments (e.g., Jim Crow laws, instituting religion, even, dare I say it, a patchwork of gun laws).
“Or is it NPR’s way of slighting missionaries?”
Actually, as I recall, the NPR commentator’s tone was one of admiration.
KsAgnostic says >>>>
“He would cede a lot of authority back to states, and contrary to the conventional wisdom of some liberarian thinkers, that is arguably a road to reducing the freedoms of citizens.”
And that is why I said the other day, I see Ron Paul as a very dangerous candidate!!
Gives new meaning to “border wars.” Think of all those morals some want legislated. JUST AN EXAMPLE (nothing against ANYONE from either state!): They’d move to Kansas and need to close their border to people form Oklahoma…
Or, say one state decided to allow abortions and another outlawed them. A citizen from the state they were outlawed went to the other state for an abortion. Would she be allowed to go home without fear of facing criminal charges? Would the state law only pertain to what happens inside its border? Oh so many questions when “things” are left to the states.
Maybe we could just STOP trying to legislate morals all the way around and have a better effect than Dr. Paul’s ideas would bring!
“Would she be allowed to go home without fear of facing criminal charges? Would the state law only pertain to what happens inside its border?”
I don’t think that someone can be prosecuted for conduct that is legal in the state it is peformed is even if it is not legal in his/her own state. There are many, many examples of this. There is no reason to think that abortion would be any different.
If Dr. Paul ran now on a third party ticket, sorry I would not be voting for him. As a main stream candidate he would have been effective if the people had been listening. His is not just a conservative or Republican message. It is an American message, it would be a benefit to Republicans, Democrats and every human being in the United States perhaps the world. But as it stand we are not listening, that means we will have to fall down to the end of the country before and even if then we realize what he was saying is what made this the home of the brave and the land of the free. But then all good things must end….
Ron Paul has no strategy for the very important issue of global warming.
Yeah cause the economy and forien policy takr a back seat to GW.

I don’t agree much at all with Ron Paul’s message, but it would make for an interesting campaign if his ideas got more air in the general election. If Wayne Allyn Root and the other LP candidates were really smart, they would invite Ron Paul to come home and run as their candidate (hell, he did it before). With his money, the LP could truly run a national campaign.
“Yeah cause the economy and foreign policy take a back seat to GW.”
Uhm, GW IS an economic and foreign policy issue. So, for that matter, are the other world environmental catastrophes (ocean pollution and overfishing, scarcity of fresh water, and deforestation/desertification).
Given the evidence that it is a) occuring and b) aggravated by human activity, and also given that c) most governments (including the now Bush Administation! oh yes, it’s true!), it will be an issue that will have an effect on foreign policy and economics, so any president is going to have to address it.
Ksagnostic, it would depend on one factor, are we the same people we were a hundred years ago?
I have thought about that and as I have said before I have been proven wrong. Having faith that the people have grown pass some petty discriminations moving more to reason instead of the dark ages. And granted with some of the examples I am sure you can site. It would appear to not be the case, in fact it could be argued that we have regressed to a more primitive form. The thinkers of the Neoconservatives believe that we can not handle freedom and that is the problem with our society. There for it is best that we remain ignorant and child-like. Allowing other whom are smarter to think for us, that is where the Government comes in and why we are no longer truly a free people. Needing the Government to be a Benevolent dictator for us. And there seem little interest in proving them wrong is there?
Writerdog- You write as though the Neocons think they are doing these things for our own good.
They are thugs, thieves and murderers.
They only care about power and enriching themselves. They are traitors to America.
True Kansas, but they want you to BELIEVE otherwise!!
“The message of freedom is as valid today as it was in 1900.”
Tell THAT to your average working person.

SolDevVB should do a reality check. AGW is driving… higher energy efficiency and renewables are navigating. The future “economy and forien policy” depend on both the “driver” and “navigator”.

ksagnostic,
Watch out, or SolDevVB will call you a dumb “f—tard”! That’s his best way of promoting Ron Paul.

“Maybe we could just STOP trying to legislate morals all the way around and have a better effect than Dr. Paul’s ideas would bring!”
Oh I can second that. Morally, I should have NO obligation to fund your socialist programs. There is no constitutional, ethical, or moral reason to tax the rich to help the poor.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need – is a moral position.
Unless, you are using your not-really-a-christian, christian beliefs to rob from me.
Hey “American way”?
Join your money on the island you hid it on.
If you’ve no obligation to your fellow American than they have no obligation to you.
In my newly informed opinion, the neo-conservatives have been blown out of proportion. The real problem is that they don’t trust the American people to understand what their true agendas are, so they lied for a good cause, when they really didn’t need to lie at all, they should of explained their positions, but even then they probably would of had a hard time invading Iraq. If I can sum it up, the neo-conservatives don’t want to own the world, they really want to spread Democracy and strive towards a Democratic world ran by 20 or so countries rather than hundreds. It’s really the evolution of humanity, and it does cost human lives, the hard part to swallow though is the people that profit from war, like Dick Cheney and tons of other corporations, but they in turn grow and provide more jobs. I think the number one concern should be the environment, because all the huge corporations make a negative impact in many ways, they need to start striving towards renewable resources, and zero emissions, or we might see the world increasingly go out of wack to balance the our negative effects out.
And I’d hate to say this since I was a Ron Paul supporter, but his views and positions are grounded in the past, and you can tell when he speaks he’s afraid of the current direction of progress, if he were president, we probably would see a real economic depression that rivals the Great Depression if we really went back to the Gold Standard. I greatly admire him, but he’s out of touch.

It’s mostly the dysfunctional, corporate owned media that keeps American citizens “ignorant and child-like“.
A strong democracy can only exist if citizens are accurately informed — that’s why dictators have state-controlled media.
Don’t let the anti-globalization people scare you,
you can’t stop evolution.

Chas,
To make the analogy more accurate, I should’ve said that SolDevVB’s future “economy and forien policy” were locked in the trunk of that car, with no way to get out.
Their survival depends on the ability of people worldwide to reduce AGW.
It’s very, very unlikely that SolDevVB’s hero, Ron Paul, who believes that volcanoes cause GW, will help them.
“If you’ve no obligation to your fellow American than they have no obligation to you.”
Amen to that. Let’s vote in politicians who support that view.
That would NOT include Billary Clinton.
White Elephant if only that was true it would still be wrong, Democracy is not something that can be exported! It can not be imposed or bestowed on someone else. The very franticness of Democracy makes it so. There are many countries right now called a Democracy in the world but each is so different and tailor to that country that is could not work anywhere else. The Democracy of the United States is totally different than that of Great Britain.
I totally agree with that, and so did Strauss, Strauss said that trying to control the middle east is pointless, he even pointed out that Rome over-stretched themselves in miserable failure trying to tame the middle east. Apparently his students didn’t listen to him and became overly ambitious. There are stages of development societies need to go through historically before they reach an evolved state of democracy, and what the Bush administration tried to do was go from point A, to point C, so it is likely we’ll be in Iraq a very long time while they naturally evolve through point B. Over ambitious undertakings usually fail.
The republican party needs to ditch the religious rightiousness. It is destroying the party today.
We also need to get off the globalization issue.
Diplomacy does not have to be at the end of a barrel, as long as the other guy knows we have one.
The communist domino theory has died. We don’t need to fight the muslim domino.
The republicans also need to turn back to basic’s and end the free-spending earmarks and worldwide purchase of friendship.
Until the above happens, the party will continue on the path to self-destruction.
I could care less about promoting Democracy, I want to get to the point where that word isn’t even used. We’re a Republic, not a democracy. I don’t get why we try and promote mob rule to all of these country’s. I wouldn’t want that shit and they don’t either. Correction…I thought we were a Republic, only to find out that we’re an oligarchy at best and a plutocracy at worst. I’m gonna say it’s actually both. But most definitely not a Republic that our flag is supposed to “stand for”. Gimme a break.
Reg…have you ever noticed that certain people here refuse to respond to logic..and their usual means of “discussion” is to just accuse someone of being a ‘troll’..with no proof whatsoever. It is their common way of not offering any logic or facts..just false accusations.
Of course..the two most prominent people that do that are real prizes…one has actually admitted he hates people because their opinions differ from his. And the other is a proven liar…he promised he was leaving this blog and never coming back…obvious lie.
So..consider the source and don’t feed the cretins. They are not worth the bandwidth.
