I realize that music reviews probably aren’t very common on this blog – what with all the Hillary-bashin’ and Democrat-dumpin’ and liberal-lashin’ sort of miscreancy goin’ on here – but what the heck.

The Songbird is in an altruistic mood this fine morning.

To all fellow music afficionados: You MUST buy Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” for your listening edification. It is simply stunning. Like all the best bands (from the Beatles, Stones, Romeo Void, The Police, etc.) – Radiohead has its own, singular sound.

The guitars are magnificent; the keyboards shimmering; the melodies transcendent; the vocals vibrant; and the listening is lyrical.

I just wanna thank that kind young man who recommended the CD to me at Starbucks last weekend. Because I needed it. This selfless young man has probably never had an abortion and/or been raped, so he probably doesn’t puke after “debating” with a “right-to-life” proponent who blames impregnated rape victims for their abortions – and exonerates the rapists.

As Kurt Cobain once said, “it’s hard to carry on with plankton like that in our atmosphere.”

But Radiohead is bringing me back to serenity. Thank you, Mr. Starbucks. (#$%^ you, Mr. “right-to-life” reprobate……)

It took Obama to have a ten state winning streak before the networks woke up to give him top billing.
Last night, as Hillary was making another screeching campaign speech live, two major networks cut from her live speech, to a shot of Obama taking the stage in front of a capacity filled crowd screaming for him.

I suppose Hillary continued screeching to her local audience, the networks were all his.

Obama supporters cannot let down now. Time to get the T e x a s, Ohio, and Penns folks to the polls.

If there is any hope of Hillary not stealing the regular delegates, and pressuring the supers to cross over and commit to her – it is only if Obama wins by an overwhelming majority!

52 week has basically followed the DOW’s fluctuations.

But with a 10.9% profit margin, a forward P/E of only 10.67, and a target at $100 a share, things are looking up!

Energy stock is held by many investment portfolio’s, to include company 401K’s and are available for DRIP!

VT…I don’t believe the fire excuse at all. Remember the flooding last spring in Kansas that took out a refinery? The excuse for the gas jump that time was that “almost all of our gas comes from there” or some such nonsense. If that were true, then the TX fire would have no impact. If it were not true, then it was clearly another empty excuse to jack up prices.

Steven, you gave me a laugh and jogged a long forgotten memory.
Way back in the 60s my uncle/aunt (not sure whose it was, actually) had a statue of St. Peter. All done up in carved walnut, it depicted a man in flowing robes, hands folded in prayer, long hair with a halo.

Then you turn it around, and yeah, it was St. Peter, the marital aid.

  28. Vaughn Tolle
    Posted February 20, 2008 at 9:58 am | Permalink

Taz, agreed that if it was only the fire, there might have been a smaller increase, if any. The link to the AP story that was posted contains a laundry list of other factors the result of which is oil prices increasing to over $100/bbl. The AP story notes that there is not one overriding reason, but a combination of various factors which has the oil price on the rise, and contains a prediction of gas at $3.50 to $3.60 per gallon later this year. Don’t forget the “speculator’s premium” in the price of oil, estimated by some in the recent past to be as much as $30/bbl. The falling dollar, the Nigerian rebel situation, and on and on, are all factors.

Do I like it? No, I don’t. It does illustrate, however, the dangers of having a cartel in control of the supply of a highly desired resource, and, IMO, the further effects of a dwindling number of vertically integrated companies in the market; one could almost say an oligopoly.

“then the TX fire would have no impact”

It is sometimes not the actual event which causes the price for a commodity to change. It is the “perception” that something will affect availability or supply. OPEC whispers about cutting production….

In short, the markets runs on fear or confidence.

A little economics and tax lesson from Boortz.

“Over the past three years Exxon Mobile has paid an average of $27 billion a year in taxes to the Imperial Federal Government. This has amounted to about 41% of Exxon’s taxable income.

The last year for which complete numbers on who pays what taxes are available was 2004. In 2004 there were 130 million individual tax returns filed. If you take the bottom 50% of those tax returns – 65 million of them – and add up the total amount of taxes those households paid you come up with $27.4 billion. This means that one corporation, Exxon Mobile, pays as much in taxes to the federal government as do the bottom half of individual taxpayers. How’s that for paying your fair share.

There’s more. The Adjusted gross income for the bottom 50% of taxpayers comes out to about $922 billion. This means that these taxpayers are paying an effective tax rate of about 3% of their adjusted gross income. Exxon? Adjusted gross income of around $67.4 billion in 2006 … for an effective tax rate of 41%.

There’s the facts, my friends. If you’re able to absorb them you’ll see just how you’re being manipulated by the likes of Hillary Clinton and other politicians. If the American voters were truly educated they couldn’t get away with it for a minute.”

    http://boortz.com/nuze/index.html

You must be referring to the series EE bonds.

The I Bonds are presently returning a little better than that.

    Series I : 4.28% Fixed : 1.20%

As the interest earned is free of local and state taxes, depending upon your tax bracket, the return is still something to consider. Of course, you can also purchase them for college costs (but not the kids names), and be free of the federal taxes too (but phases out at 90K+).

Your point still stands however, in that over 100 million Americans are invested in equities. Some of them just don’t know it. But their 401*’s, mutual funds, and other investment vehicles will have a portion invested in energy stocks.

Heckler, the problem I have with using a “per centage of Adjusted Gross Income” analysis is that it ignores the difference between AGI and Taxable Income. Thus, the 3% of AGI figure that he uses ignores the % of Taxable Income, as defined by the Code, that is paid by these folks.

Yep, corporations pay payroll taxes, and get a deduction for the same in computing taxable income. Assuming that the income tax rate on Exxon is indeed 41% then the net Exxon is actually paying is 59 cents on the dollar.

Heckler, as Exxon increases its profits, the feds get 35% of it; that is the maximum corporate income tax rate. Yes, between 15 million and 18.3 million in taxable income, there is a 38% rate applied. Exxon’s profits are at the level, however, that the rate applied is 35%.

The 41% of “AGI” (a concept which is foreign to me in the corporate income tax area) suggests that there is also some corporate AMT being paid by Exxon.

Fort Hood soliders breaking the silence in war in Iraq
    2/17/2008 10:53 PM
    By: Chelsea Hover

    Hart Viges passes out pamphlets.
A growing number of active duty soldiers or recent Iraq war veterans are speaking up about the war in Iraq.

And with the number of soldiers speaking up about their experiences in Iraq via online forums, blogs and pamphlets, some vets feel it’s their duty to let the American public know the truth.

“The honest truth is that if the American people knew what was going on over there everyday, they would be raising their voices too. They would be saying, ‘Hey, bring those guys home,” Sgt. Selena Coppa said.

Coppa blames lawmakers in Washington for filtering the facts on the war in Iraq. She said there’s no real end in sight.

“There is a cost to this war. This war is being paid in American blood, in my soldier’s blood. And that is not okay,” Coppa said.

“We lost really good friends, really good leaders who died in Iraq. From my perspective, it didn’t make any sense, we didn’t
accomplish anything, and I talked to a lot of other soldiers who feel the same way,” Fort Hood soldier Casey Porter said.

I have several friends who are career military.

They have a lot of reasons for why they enlisted. Most of them for the educational opportunities. One friend got to medical school and is a psychiatrist dealing PTSD. It’s important, essential work, but it breaks his heart that it’s needed. As with most careerists, the Pentagon is like the home office that generally tries to do the right thing but is so bogged down in politics (office and global), procedure, and a moron for a Commander in Chief.

There’s a level of patriotism in these people that’s not the ballyhooing flag-waving type favored by most chicken-hawks. It’s, rather, a level of professionalism dedicated to doing the right thing in a business where everything’s likely to go wrong.

As the price of gas ping pongs higher, I find myself at the gas pump less and less, driving only when absolutely necessary. I guess that means I’m not helping the economy? Tell ya what. When the economy starts helping me, then I’ll be able to help the economy. It’s a vicious circle.

Y’all can call Dr. Paul a kook all day long. Funny thing is he already won. Listen to y’all talking about being fiscally conservative. Reducing the size and cost of government. Did any of the candidates bring that up (except the Dr.)? Where did this come from?

Look over on the other threads and see once rabid-pro-Bush-war-machines declaring Iraq a stupid endeavor.

Apart from Rudy and Ron Paul, no other GOP candidate talked about fiscal responsibility and reducing government. Shoot, even leftist WS is talking about it – BEFORE starting any entitlement programs.

What a wonderful thing Dr. Paul did. He was called a kook and blacked out, yet the message of freedom and liberty rings strong across both parties.

Outstanding. Hold your candidate (whomever it may be) to the fire. Demand that s/he be fiscally and foreign policy responsible. Amazing !!! Thank God for the revolution.

RD, the price of gas jumped as a result of a refinery fire in Texas and some other issues.

Thank you, Regular. I heard about and read the story yesterday, so I’m aware of the WHY on the higher price of gas. I’m just curious to see how long it takes to drop and how far it will go down, before we see another hike. It would be fascinating if not so predictable.

Unfortunately, Sol, the source of the oil isn’t all that relevant when OPEC, in essence, through its actions in deciding how much it will supply, taken together with the “speculation premium” I’ve posted earlier, affects the world price. The $$ may go to Canada or Mexico more than to Venezuela (an OPEC member as well) or to the Mid East, but it’s the same amount of $$.

From CNN Money I you know most of you are aware of this,

    http://money.cnn.com/2007/03/06/pf/retirement/401k_fees/index.htm

Roughly 47 million working individuals participated in a 401(k) plan in 2005, up from 7.5 million in 1984, according to The Profit Sharing/401k Council of America.

But because of weak disclosure rules, many workers are often poorly informed about all the potential fees they face, according to prepared remarks by experts, obtained ahead of Tuesday’s hearing.

Over 80 percent of 401(k) investors are not aware of how much they pay in fees, according to a recent report published by United States Government Accountability Office.
The right way to tap into your 401(k)

Workers have seen their account balances penalized due to excessive fees by an average of 15 percent over the past 20 years, according to one expert set to speak before members of Congress Tuesday.

“We have to ask whether all these fees are necessary, and we have to examine whether they are undermining workers’ retirement security,” said California Congressman George Miller, chairman of the House committee.

According to prepared remarks by one independent pension fiduciary who will appear at Tuesday’s hearing, 401(k) participants face as least seven different hidden fees, which cover everything from brokerage costs to trading fees that investors incur when they fiddle with their portfolio.

In some instances 401(k) participants are forced to pony up for services they may not even receive.

And those fees can add up quickly.

Take an investor who makes a $150 contribution per pay period to his or her existing $30,000 401(k) account balance. Assuming a rate of return of 8 percent over 25 years, the investors who has to pay just 1 percent in annual fees, will sacrifice $85,000 to fees by the time they retire.

Often times it’s workers at smaller companies who end up getting stung the most by hidden fees, according to Stephen Butler, president of Pension Dynamics Corporation, who is scheduled to speak before lawmakers Tuesday.

Smaller firms are not always savvy enough when it comes to picking a retirement plan, says Butler, and its workers can end up paying up to 100 times more for the exact same services that a Fortune 500 firm receives.

One solution offered by experts such as Butler include a national standard disclosure form that would outline the amount an investor would have to pay in dollars and compound earnings over 10 and 20 years based on average fees charged to participants.

That’s why I bought me a Honda Civic Hybrid! I’m a little cramped in it (tall and fat), but I more than doubled my MPG and cut my fuel cost in half.
Plus the insurance happened to be less than on my previous rustbucket. Averaging 44 MPG. Plus I got a nice tax credit ($1,500) from the state of Kansas, and at the time, a nice one from the Feds (I don’t think the Honda qualifies Fed anymore).

I still feel the pain when I go the pumps. But on the bright side, the Indian running the place doesn’t know me by name anymore (since I’m stopping less frequently), and as I listen to the pump running, I feel some compensation knowing I own a piece of the company.

Could use a little more leg room, but with the saving on fuel (I commute long distances), I can bear it.

Ok, Bush I was suckered into this same approach. We should NOT repeat his mistake.

BEFORE the tax cuts are allowed to expire, CUT the Federal budget by 10% across the board, then maintain spending increases at 1% or more below inflation after that.

George W. Bush’s Overall Job Approval to New Low

George W. Bush’s overall job approval rating has dropped to a new low in American Research Group polling as 78% of Americans say that the national economy is getting worse according to the latest survey from the American Research Group.

Among all Americans, 19% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 77% disapprove. When it comes to Bush’s handling of the economy, 14% approve and 79% disapprove.

Among Americans registered to vote, 18% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 78% disapprove. When it comes to the way Bush is handling the economy, 15% of registered voters approve of the way Bush is handling the economy and 79% disapprove.

A total of 78% of Americans say the national economy is getting worse and 47% say the national economy is in a recession. A total of 42% of Americans, however, say they believe the national economy will be better a year from now, which is the highest level for this question in the past year. This optimism does not spread to improvements in household financial situations as 17% of Americans say they expect their household financial situations to be better a year from now, which is the lowest for this question in the past year.

For anyone whose student is in high school, is bright enough to be considered for admission at Stanford, and who is worried about the cost; Stanford eliminates tuition payments for students whose family income is $100,000 or less; if the family income is under $60,000, there will be a significant amount of assistance in paying for room and board. Looks like the private schools are starting to conduct a genteel “bidding war” to attract desirable students. The article notes that about one-third the students at Stanford currently will benefit from this change.

Unless you know nothing about the subject, Amway, which I don’t believe would likely be true – as boomers retire, we will be paying out more than we bring in to these programs (as early as 2017).

According to the Government Accountability Office:
    http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d07983r.pdf

Unless changes are made, by 2040, nearly every dollar the government collects in taxes will be needed for Social Security, Medicare, and paying interest on the debt. There are several options for reining in spending on these popoular entitlement programs – each have up and down sides. We should be discussing this unpopular topic rather than acting like everything is going fine. Privatizing Social Security would be on the bottom of my list. My favored methods are: raise the age of when both programs start (we are living longer), means test – (Oprah – gets neither program, nor does Bill Gates), would hospice care be better than Medicare heroic efforts for end of life care? Plus there are other options.

Let the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010.

I would be a very popular politician: “I will raise your taxes and reduce your entitlements! But we can have an unlimited supply of hope! Most importantly future generations will not revile and hate us for our indulgences.”

Unlike our current politicians, I believe if Americans understood the dire straights we are in, and trusted that everyone would be making the needed sacrifices, they would be in favor doing what is necessary.

During the first – 8 – eight years of his elected service Obama sponsored over 820 bills.

    He introduced >>>

    233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
    112 crime fighting bills,
    97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
    21 ethics reform bills,
    15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded:

**the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 – became law,

**The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, – became law,

**The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,

**The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, – became law,

**The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.

In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to several Blog posters.

SCANDAL, ONCE AGAIN, TAINTS JOHN McCAIN?
UPDATE: 02-20-08 (5:04 PST) Matt Drudge is reporting …

“Months later, NY TIMES set to launch results of its McCain investigation of senator’s relationships with lobbyists… Developing Late…”

    UPDATE: Together again…

According to the Washington Post…McCain Says Allegations That He Did Favors for D.C. Lobbyist Are Untrue

“It is unfortunate that rumor and gossip enter into political campaigns,” said the statement from Jill Hazelbaker, the campaign’s communications director. “John McCain has a 24-year record of serving this country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the important issues facing our country.”

Hires top-notch Washington lawyer, Bill Bennett, to negotiate with the New York Times…

Bennett represented President Bill Clinton during the impeachment investigation mounted by Congress. In 1989, Bennett was special counsel to a Senate ethics committee probe of five senators, including McCain, over their ties to convicted savings-and-loan executive Charles Keating. The panel concluded that McCain used poor judgment in interceding with banking regulators on Keating’s behalf, but that no punishment was warranted.

    Original story…

According to a developing story on the Drudge Report, John McCain may be involved in another scandal involving special interests. While John McCain may be decrying the “suspicious timing” of a report which may link him to impropriety, given his past history of scandal and back-room deals, I say it is better we learn the truth NOW rather than later.

MEDIA FIREWORKS: MCCAIN PLEADS WITH NY TIMES TO SPIKE STORY

“Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!”

“McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.”

“The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation. The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.
Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks. ”

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME McCAIN has been questioned on his ethics…

    According to Wikipedia…

“The Keating Five (or Keating Five Scandal) refers to a Congressional scandal related to the collapse of most of the Savings and Loan institutions in the United States in the late 1980s.”

“In 1989, the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association of Irvine, Calif., collapsed. Lincoln’s chairman, Charles H. Keating Jr., was faulted for the thrift’s failure. Keating, however, told the House Banking Committee that the FHLBB and its former chief Edwin J. Gray were pursuing a vendetta against him. Gray testified that several U.S. senators had approached him and requested that he ease off on the Lincoln investigation. It came out that these senators had been beneficiaries of $1.3 million (collective total) in campaign contributions from Keating.”

“This allegation set off a series of investigations by the California government, the United States Department of Justice, and the Senate Ethics Committee. The ethics committee’s investigation focused on five senators: Alan Cranston (D-CA); Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ); John Glenn (D-OH); John McCain (R-AZ); and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (D-MI), who became known as the Keating Five.”

“After months of testimony revealed that all five senators acted improperly to differing degrees, the senators continually said they were following the status quo of campaign funding practices. In August 1991, the committee concluded that Cranston, DeConcini, and Riegle’s conduct constituted substantial interference with the FHLBB’s enforcement efforts and that they had done so at the behest of Charles Keating. The committee recommended censure for Cranston and criticized the other four for “questionable conduct.”

    Campaign Finance Legislative Failure…

“McCain also remained in the Senate and he made campaign finance reform a key legislative interest. Substantial campaign finance reform was not passed until the adoption of the McCain-Feingold Act.”

The impact of the poorly-crafted McCain-Feingold Act has given power to lobbyists and others who use its provisions to raise almost unlimited and untraceable amounts of money using special tax-exempt entitites known as 527s after their IRS tax code section. This has made people like far-left weirdo George Soros major players in democratic campaigns and the plan to defeat the Bush Administration.

    Kennedy-McCain SHAMnesty Act

McCain was also a key player in a secret backroom deal (apparently the type he favors) with the democrats to craft the Kennedy-McCain SHAMnesty legislation which would have subverted the sovereignty of the United States and furthered the destruction of our healthcare, education, retirement, law enforcement and social benefits infrastructure in ways that are still affecting legislation and government programs.

McCain has a whole lot more to get passed than just an old story about his (platonic) relationship with a lobbyist.

He and the GOP should be much more concerned with his connection to and support of George W Bush.

That fact will get him about 30% of the general election vote.

In the general he is going to have to run away from Bush or he will suffer the same fate as Bob Dole – the heir apparent about ten years too late.

The network had to put Schubert on two weeks suspension for his language concerning Chelsea Clinton and last night on Hardball when Chris Matthews was talking about Obama the picture showing behind him was Ben Laden. I’m sure it was just a mistake but they did have to issue an apology to Obama’s campaign.

As for Fox, Hillary Clinton no less said they were the most fair and unbiased news network out there.

“Clinton said that her staff had sent her “some independent study” “which seemed to suggest that” “in terms of the fairness of the coverage,” Fox News Channel has treated her campaign more fairly than MSNBC.

“I really am troubled by this pattern of behavior and comments that you hear” on MSNBC, said Clinton. Recently, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews came under heat for comments deemed sexist by many and liberal media watchdog group MediaMatters has increased its scrutiny of the cable network.”

A bill in the Missouri state legislature would make sure that a husband can’t threaten his wife with divorce if she refuses to commit an abortion, and prevents forcing a woman into committing an abortion by cutting off financial assistance, cutting her off from her job, or revoking a scholarship. The bill also includes a measure that requires abortion mills to allow women a chance to see an ultrasound of their
unborn child prior to the abortion. (Viewing a good ultrasound image causes most mothers in abortion mills to cancel the killing.) Abortion mills would also be required to post signs indicating the various kinds of help available for continuing a crisis pregnancy.
Missouri has a real chance of enacting such pro-life measures, while Kansas pro-life bills face a sure veto, since anything that would help mothers avoid coercion in filthy, unsafe abortion mills would threaten abortion mill profits. In fact, successful enforcement of the prevention of coerced abortions and ultrasound viewing alone in Kansas would probably shut down all the Kansas abortion mills, for lack of profit.
    - – -

Planned Parenthood’s Asheville, NC abortion mill will be closed for one month to repair damage from a fire that apparently started from paint stored near a heater.
You can bet that Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills do not get fire department inspections or any other kind of safety inspection, leaving at even more risk the mothers who enter to contract the killing of their children.

Good night and may God cause his light to shine upon you and his knowledge and wisdom to enter your vacant mind.

Geez, the first thing the old wench posts about the McCain story has to do with Jennifer Flowers… Naturally something from the Clinton era… her brain is stuck there… THEN when told it isnt a SEX story, she attacks MSNBC…. When challenged on that, she spins and spins, and calls ME a liar!!

I am sick and tired of that kind of disregard for Truth…. Granny, I feel sorry for you that you cant handle truth… apparently in any form….

What I dont GET, is why YOU and so many others on this Blog as SOOO gung ho on Sexual Inuendo!! First thing you type is about Jennifer Flowers… who ACCUSED a target… NO accusastion in this story!!

When you are told it isnt a sex story, You go off hog wild on some nonsense about the entire MSNBC network being censored… Gee, what a LIE that is!!!

THEN when I call you on it, you attack ME because I tell you you are wrong….

Granny, that takes either total stupidity or some kind of illness to get it that WRONG!!!

And you do it almost every DAY lately!! I have said before, you really need to get that problem looked at!! I am serious… You really need to get that looked at!!

I would imagine it can still be fixed… But it isnt something you want to put off!!

    PLEASE go get it fixed!!

Here’s what I read about McCain and the lobbyist.

“The published reports said McCain and Iseman each denied having a romantic relationship, and the paper offered no evidence that they had, saying only that aides worried about the appearance of McCain having close ties to a lobbyist with business before the Senate Commerce Committee on which McCain served.

The story alleges that McCain wrote letters and pushed legislation involving television station ownership that would have benefited Iseman’s clients.”
    ===============================

That would seem to be the big bad terrible thing McCain did…. However, it appears that he did nothing illegal… poor judgment, maybe… illegal, No!!

Hoever, if you go back to the Keating case, McCain seems to have a habit of bad judgment cases…

You know, you’ve really gotta wonder if Huckabee is swiftboating McCain again.

Timing, as with the Obama story, seems awfully suspicious.
