Do we measure candidates’ patriotism now by whether they wear a flag lapel pin? Yes, if you follow the dumb rhetoric of Fox News talking heads and other right-wing bloviators who see something un-American in Barack Obama’s refusal to adopt the cliches of conventional political patriotism.
It’s the latest in a series of Internet-based, fact-challenged attacks on Obama’s character that make for good “controversy†and media ratings but insult the intelligence of Americans.
Instead of enabling the silliness, the media should pursue a simple question: Is there really a credible pattern of behavior suggesting that Obama and his wife don’t love their country? And if not, could we move on to something of substance?

Why can’t she simply state her policies, her plans, the ways she will begin, how she will act and react clearly. Won’t intelligent people be able to see any differences? As I’ve said dozens of times in this forum, I’m tired of Democrats nominating the better person but the lesser politician. Gore won the popular vote in 2000 but by so slim a margin, the SCOTUS got away with a judicial coup d’etat. Kerry was a dud as a campaigner.
The very fact we’re considering the question of Hillary or Barack (remember when she was the “inevitable” nominee?) speaks to the power of Obama as a candidate.
As for your “do you think Republic Party wants to work with you?” meme is getting old and speaks to mistakes we Demorats have made for years: We’ve nominated on policy instead of politics.
The election isn’t just a Republic v. Democratic party thing. A lot of people who aren’t political junkies who participate on WE Blog are not affiiated with either major party. Most of those voters are breaking for Obama and that’s an important factor in getting a Democrat elected in November.
Obama wasn’t my first choice when the primaries began. Frankly, I was so encouraged by the entire Democratic field (Gravel, not so much), I could have supported any of them for the Oval Office. Now we’re down to two. I’m going for the better candidate.

I’m not the person to respond because I still think Clinton is the best candidate who could hit the ground running with a shorter learning curve. BUT, equally important is that I will not be negative! That has been (and continues as far as I can see) the way of Republican politics. I am above that! So support your candidate – tout her positives, be proud of her experience and policies.
But whoever is the Democratic Party nominee stands head and shoulders above McCain! So be prepared to get behind that person and work hard to get her or him elected in November. Nobody cares to read any of my old posts, but if you did you would see I actually stopped voting a straight republican party ticket with the midterms.
I am a conservative who has been abandoned by the republican party. Instead of being conservative, republicans now like to spend more money than “we” have, stand by Jesus instead of the constitution (in fact change the constitution to read Jesus if possible), one-track mind and obedience to the abortion issue, and more pork (earmarks) than anytime in history.
I voted against Jim Ryun and Phil Kline for above reasons (and then some). Hoping to say good bye to Sammy Brownback for his OCS (Onward Christian Soldiers) stand too. But because I am conservative, I will vote Nancy Boyda (Ryun’s democratic replacement) for the same reasons. She loves earmarks, and brags about it.
And just who did the republicans give us for a candidate (need I say more?)?
Regardless, Hillary is old school politic’s despite anything she says. Additionally, she made a statement she would KEEP TROOPS IN IRAQ until at least 2013 – and bases in the middle east EVEN LONGER.
Not so Obama.
But I’m keeping my options open. This whole race is not about who we support: It’s about the lesser of three evils to me.

It’s what’s worked for the right wing before. They are going to try it again. Question patriotism, try to make their opponent look like an extremist so as to distract the swing voters from their own extremism.
Here is what I think:
The reality is, it is the candidate. Some candidates are extremely vulnerable to this sort of sliming (e.g., Dukakis, Kerry). Others withstand it, and the desperate attempts to demonize them further backfire because the fanaticism and self serving nature of the attacks become obvious(Clinton and the impeachment nonsense). This pattern has had a real effect on Democratic voters. They look consciously or unconsciously, for the candidate that they think can best withstand this stuff.
The idea that someone not wearing a flag pin indicates a lack of patriotism or love of country is absurd on its face when the target is actually running for president. The trick is going to be to point that out. The sliming can’t be ignored, but the most effective weapon against such sliming is to withstand it.

Neither one has the resume to be President, of course. But resume is not everything. We know how Hillary acts when given the levers of power (remember the Hillarycare fiasco? – she managed to even piss off her own party with her dictatorial management style, bless her black little statist heart. Remember the FBI files mess? Really want to give her control of the IRS?).
Obama may have the same sort of agenda, but he appears, at least, to put a much better face on it and recognizes that politics ALWAYS means compromise. One can compromise without giving up on core principles. That was Reagan’s talent; even when he compromised, as he often did, one never doubted where he stood. You may disagree with those principles, of course, and I’m sure you do. Hell, you condemn Obama for recognizing the obvious: Reagan was an enormous figure. Rightly or wrongly, we live in an economic and political reality largely put in place by Ronald Reagan; Clinton’s good economic record was built largely on Reagan’s foundation. Just say thank you.
Compromise isn’t a dirty word, JR. It’s reality.
And if the result is stalement, well, that’s probably a good thing. We often forget that this government wasn’t designed to be fast, or politically efficient; stalemate is part and parcel of the package. And remember, in most cases, the best action government can take is none at all.

Me personally, I would only burn a flag because it has became unservicable and in a private ceremony.
It is as precious to me today, as it was under every president I have lived under. It is not the presidents flag. But I understand burning it in public is a form of protected protest. I wouldn’t burn it when a new president is sworn in (sort of a patriotic day to me).

The purpose of those prolifers, at the clinics, is to change hearts and minds and get the women to talk to them, and keep their babies.

By the way, where did this “brave” flag burning happen? In public, where JR could make a real “point” or in his back yard, behind a fence?
Now, let us look at the time line here. JR only voted ONCE for a Republican, Reagan, by his own account. He says his Dad got mad at him for that. Rather odd comment, but that is what he said.
Now, The Summer of Mercy happened under George W. Bush, not Reagan. Bush 1 even filed a motion, in Judge Kelly’s Court, telling Kelly that the order of his Court was not proper. (The Supreme Court, and the 10th Circuit, later said the same thing.)

Actually, Woody Guthrie was a card carrying communist. He wrote articles for various NY City communist newspapers.
He served in the Merchent Marines during WW II. He hated the fascist Adolf Hitler – like many other communists did.

The Declaration came a number of years prior to the Constitutional Conventions… In those intervening years, there was a blood Revolutionary War… Against the Crown… the Crown that was a Theocratic State… More likely as not, regardless of what Jefferson wrote in the Declaration… Jefferson, the non-churchman… the deist… The Founders nonetheless decided there should be NO possibility of a Theocracy in these new United States… the more Perfect Union…
