Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays, didn’t offer an official explanation last week of why he was the only member of the Kansas delegation to vote against the $168 billion economic stimulus package. But his spokeswoman confirmed that his vote reflected his recent comments on the bill, including that “we can’t sacrifice the long-term economy and ignore the reality that money we would spend on a stimulus package is being borrowed.†He also recently said: “I worry this has less to do with stimulating the economy and more to do with the November election.†Kansans shouldn’t let their gratitude for the cash they’ll soon get blind them to the fact that this is fiscal funny money.

Jerry Moran is correct of course and the people I talk with over coffee understand this. But why is Jerry Moran pointing this out now when his myopic fellow Congressmen think the people of the U.S. don’t understand this and will throw them another vote.
China thanks us, of course, for the increase in our interest payments to them for their huge proportion of the nine trillion dollar U.S. National Debt.
Jwink I do hope the people understand this, I hope a lot of people understand this. The sheer lack of any substance in the attempt to solve the problems with the economy is another sign that no one in Washington is even looking for a real solution. The claim that those in the Senate and house claiming to be Conservatives are nothing more then wolves in sheep’s clothing. On that a lot of people really do understand that. When your “paper house “ is on fire, the solution is NOT to put more paper on the house!
Yep. Even here, on this blog filled with people who hate taxes, I havent heard too many say this is a good idea.
And this is the second major vote that Moran has bucked the party on, no? Didnt he buck them on the Medicare Part D vote too?
Maybe he feels the shift in the wind.
Three more checks that can be sent to me, because they think it is a bad idea. :)
troll-boy, the only reason YOU think it is a good idea is because your lord and savior, bush, wants it. As a member of the Democratic Party (what you and others describe as the “party of socialism”), I think this is a STUPID idea as well. bush is suggesting the Congress borrow money from the Chinese to supposedly “jump start” an economy that that is heading south due to the malfeasance of bush and the party that controlled Congress (the Republics) throughout the majority of the years of National Disgrace (2001-2009).
So Regular, just how much money do you owe the loan sharks? It not free money by any stretch of the imagination. These rebate or as one Republican Senator put it “pre-bates” checks, is money that the Government has once again went to the Chinese well to draw. When people are starving is it better to eat a meal or a candy bar? These candy bars may give you a full feeling for a very short time and rebuild your energy level for an hour then you are worst off. But the meal may last you the rest of the day, when the question is starving to death today. Would it not be better to have a day to find more food then an hour?
Apophis, it does make me wonder if they have already booked their flights out of the country?
Only a fool would be around after this crashes the country even farther.
Again, the lack of humor in this blog is proportional to the level of anal retentive behavior .
Bankrupting this country is never funny.
The party of fiscal resposibility is no longer the Republics.
When I speak with young people who are very motivated and excited about this fall’s race, the debt bushco has left their generation and their children and grandchildren is always one topic of WHY they know they must be involved. Even they know this is not more than (possibly) temporary salve and can’t be even called a solution.
Thank you, Moran!
Rep. Moran listens to the common voter.
We could all use a represenative who does this.
Everyone knows that giving everyone $300 by going further in dept is not a stimulus of any LASTING value.
A “stimulus” plan only makes sense if it is paid for.
To do stimulus, you have to get money moving. For too long, money in this country only flows one way and that is toward more money.
Now if they had coupled this stimulus plan with say a capital gains tax to pay for it? Then it might make sense.
Okay, okay . . . enough already. Congress and the prez have declared this country needs a stimulus package to undo the effects of over seven years of the bush doctrine, which says, “Hey, it ain’t MY money.”
The only thing is, congress failed to see that the stimulus package is nothing but a further extension of the bush doctrine. Reminds me of the “whose on first” shtick. And someone, somewhere, is still saying, “Hey, these elected officials sure are smart.” I’ll also bet those same people attend snake charming school every sunday.
$600 per person stimulus package? Why, honey, I get twice that for ten minutes with my gentleman friends. I could turn Huckberry into a real man in half that time. Then he might be worth voting for.
Moran votes along party lines far too often for my taste, but once in awhile, he’ll pull one I am not expecting. This is one of those times. I’m quite pleased he chose not to vote for it. I truly just don’t understand why they keep putting us further in debt.
Amen, Jerry Moran, well done.
You were a brave man to go against both parties rush to seal their political power – and add a crushing 150 billion dollars to the national debt.
Even today, most economists project the stimulus package will do little for the economy (the very justification our politicians are using for passage).
Fools rush in……..
OMG!!!
MOTHER!!!!!
Heheheh. The return of the Queen! All hail Mother.
I’m playing some blues right now!
Thanks Jerry! (again)
Principled Kansas Repubicans still walk among us, at least those of us who live in District 1.
Not news, this, but to sum up: how to win and hold a Congressional seat in Kansas (in order of importance).
1) Be likeable.
2) Work like a dog.
3) Be sane.
4) Be Republican.
4a) If Republican, do not cross Grover Norquist.
Funny how all 3 can innoculate one against almost any level of nuttiness existing in the Kansas constituency, even out in W Kansas, no?
Other than the nuttiness embodied in the third rail of national GOP politics, aka Grover Norquist, of course. Or is he the first rail now?
Uh Pedant? I thought you lived in Virginia?
I do live in Virginia. But unfortunately I am so without a life that I occasionally get up on Sunday morning and pine for Kansas. :D
And I think numbers 2 and 3 are optional. Witness brownback and ol’ rubber stamp.
If you’re going to rep District 1 of Kansas, then you have to work like a dog. Senators can BE from D 1, like Roberts, but they don’t have to rely on D 1 as their sole constituency.
I wonder sometimes if part of the reason Moran can buck the RNC occasionally, kind of a McCain Lite (in a way), is because D 1 is so damn big that the insanity requisite to the necessary ambition precludes #1, likeability. For example, Neufeld.
Also, my parents live in D 1. My dad had issues with a VA hospital bill a while back, and Moran’s staff was herculean in their efforts to help. Really great. Even in the face of my cranky Dem mother, bless her heart, they were never anything less than responsive, accurate, and cheerful…even when Mom answered the phone. :D
“The business of our nation goes forward. These United States are confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions. We suffer from the longest and one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift, and crushes the struggling young and the fixed-income elderly alike. It threatens to shatter the lives of millions of our people.
Idle industries have cast workers into unemployment, human misery, and personal indignity. Those who do work are denied a fair return for their labor by a tax system which penalizes successful achievement and keeps us from maintaining full productivity.
But great as our tax burden is, it has not kept pace with public spending. For decades we have piled deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children’s future for the temporary convenience of the present. To continue this long trend is to guarantee tremendous social, cultural, political, and economic upheavals.
You and I, as individuals, can, by borrowing, live beyond our means, but for only a limited period of time. Why, then, should we think that collectively, as a nation, we’re not bound by that same limitation? We must act today in order to preserve tomorrow. And let there be no misunderstanding: We are going to begin to act, beginning today.
The economic ills we suffer have come upon us over several decades. They will not go away in days, weeks, or months, but they will go away. They will go away because we as Americans have the capacity now, as we’ve had in the past, to do whatever needs to be done to preserve this last and greatest bastion of freedom.
In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price.”
This wasn’t taken from a recent speech but from the inaugural speech of Ronald Reagan in 1981. Today I say we do have this same problem and as long as we set here divided and complain along party lines we are still part of the problem. When we start looking at the man or woman we are putting in power whether it is congress, the senate or as the prez – by their attitude on cutting government spending and addressing the deficit then we have started to look at the problem with a view to solving it.
The deficit isn’t new, gov hands outs aren’t new – politicians depend on our votes to stay in DC. Until we say enough to them, and vote the big spenders out of power it isn’t going to improve.
How come he voted yes the first time the stimulus package came out? Moran is worse than Kerry >>>>>FLIP FLOP as usual
What I’ve read on this thread is people from all sides and political views knowing full well that the stimulus package isn’t a solution or a good decision. Count up how many of us have agreed with Moran when we disagree often on other subjects. Why can WE THE PEOPLE understand and agree that spending must be cut and still refuse to UNelect the people who are doing what we disapprove?
Linda we can’t change the past but we can change the future. It is in our power to look for the candidates in both parties that we agree with most. It may mean that we vote for someone who opposes our pet issue but someone we agree with on fiscal policies.
Just my thoughts. This speech was after 4 years of Carter and we were in a horrible position. It took change. I will vote democratic if it means policy changes that will affect the deficit problem and excess spending.
“I occasionally get up on Sunday morning and pine for Kansas.”
Pedant, I am always glad to see when you check in! I also appreciate it when you include views and news from your new home state. Good to see you! Come back often.
Pendant I have a son living in Manassas. He rubs in the weather to me all of the time. I always send him a picture when we have snow and ice so he doesn’t forget his midwest roots. His kids were born in Hawaii so they always appreciate the snow pics.
It was great finally meeting you grm, how did the Grandson like the Caucus? LOL I promised Hank not to make a scene. Besides with all the noise those Huckabee supporters were making you could hardly hear the Paul supporters! Man don’t you just love the words of the “great communicator”, (I know I know guys its libel to get boring listening to two people having a love fest over President Reagan)? And what you said,

Spoken like a OKIE democrat,, ah I mean a Kansas republican! Hee!
Writer good to meet you. Grandson liked you and Hank, he enjoyed most of the caucus. Understands the issues much better now. Intends to talk with his Civics teacher tomorrow about it.
My sons are past the age to be sent to Iraq but I certainly understand your position with your son on the front line. I have a grandson that age and can only imagine how I would feel.
It was interesting. I knew from the beginning Huck was going to win. He had the loudest group.
I was inspired when I saw the long line. Someone I knew helped me go the VIP door and get in. Wish you guys had been with us and you could have gone in also.
Looking forward to a well informed electorate putting a good prez in place in 09.
Huckabee wants a Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage and one to ban abortion……………
How about a Constitutional Amendment to require pay as you go and balancing the flippin’ budget?
These folks need to grow the flip up and act like grown ups.
Four percent of the adult American population is gay. Abortions are at their lowest levels in decades and what do the Republicans focus on?
Abortion and gay marriage.
Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh…………….
WS I am reading the blog and so far you are the one who keeps bringing these up. I haven’t mentioned them once. I don’t think that any prez can control social issues. I do however think they can direct fiscal issues. Where do all of the candidates stand on tax, spending, budget cutting, and all other issues that control our deficit?
That is the question we need to address. You are as bad as Dodson if you allow this to control your vote.
It is a good time to be an American and there is much work for the adults to do in order to clean up after what the children are leaving us. We’re up to the job and the Democratic Party candidate will get ‘er done! Look at who is motivated, excited, enthusiastic and in what numbers!!
But let’s make sure we don’t rest on any laurels, or get overly confident! It is too important to stop working or take our eye off the goal of this November!
Right after the Carter presidency we had Reagan and Bush 1 come in and make an even bigger mess of our economy! The last time a balanced budget was even presented was during the Clinton presidency. bushco don’t even pretend to spend our money with an eye to responsibility! They are too busy trying to be a one-world power to pay attention to Americans.
bushco really have been the very best ambassador the Democratic Party could ever have had!
“You are as bad as Dodson if you allow this to control your vote.”
Sorry, but if a candidate is remotely concerned about PREVENTING abortion and gay marriage as PRIORITIES, then we need to look elsewhere.
“I don’t think that any prez can control social issues.”
Really? Judges, veto power, bully pulpit.
There are three ways that a president can influence social policies.
I want a president that is concerned about the future of America, not whether Fred and Barney are doin’ the horizontal bop.
WS it will always come back to states rights. Or it should. I still say social issues don’t belong in a national election whether you are for or against them. Too many fiscal issues to bring this up now. Why are you?
“Why are you?”
BECAUSE folks like Huckabee and McCain keep bringing it up……………
BECAUSE the Republican base is much more concerned about Fred and Barney getting hitched than they are about balancing the budget.
When has Huck or McCain EVER proposed a plan to address the deficit or the debt?
As for States Rights? That was the argument FOR slavery.
End of story.
WS I have yet to hear this brought by Huck or McCain. It is only brought up by those who tell us who is against something such as you. Dobson is not running for public office. Let me know if I have missed something.
